From space, our Earth looks blue. This is because about 71% of it is covered by oceans. That’s why we call it the “Blue Planet”.
Every year on June 8th, many people around the world wear blue. It is World Oceans Day. On this day, we learn about what the oceans are, why they are in danger, and how to protect them.
There are four main oceans on Earth. The Pacific Ocean is the largest one. It is even bigger than all the land on Earth. The Arctic Ocean is the smallest one. It is covered in ice most of the year. But now, its ice is melting quickly because the Earth is getting warmer and warmer. Scientists worry that we won’t have the ice someday.
Oceans are very important for all life. They are home to many living things, from big whales to small plants. Oceans give us rain and drinking water. They also provide us with food and energy. Most importantly, ocean plants make over half of the oxygen we breathe.
However, oceans are now in danger. One big problem is plastic pollution. Every year, lots of plastic goes into the oceans. It hurts sea animals and can even come into our bodies when we eat seafood.
The good news is that we can all help. For example, people who live near the sea can take part in the Beach Clean-up Day. If you live far from the sea, you can use less plastic, recycle more like bottles, and share your ideas online. Every day, we can do something right to help our oceans. We all can make a difference!

Recently, you can see an amazing scene in the Jinhu Wetland Forest Park, where thousands of egrets (鹭鸟) gather and play among the trees. Each year, beginning in March, this water forest in Eastern China becomes a safe place for migratory (迁徙的) birds.
According to 2025 spring monitoring data (监测数据), more than 10,000 egrets make homes in the park’s trees—an increase of about 15% compared to the same time in 2023. White egrets make up around 70% of the number.
The unusual wetland ecosystem (生态系统) was formed in the 1960s. Today, this environment has become one of Jiangsu’s famous bird watching places, attracting nature lovers and photographers. Wetlands are important for humans, too. Their calm waters are good for valuable fish. About one billion people around the world depend on (依赖) wetlands to support their lives through activities such as fishing, rice farming, hunting or tourism.
However, wetlands are in danger. In the last 100 years, the UK has lost about 90% of its wetlands because of pollution (污染) and climate change. In some other places, people also want to change wetlands to make more space for farms and buildings.

What is recycling?
Most of the aluminum (铝) cans in the United States are made with recycled aluminum. This is one way to recycle resources.
Recycling means taking materials from products you have finished using and making brand new products with them. So if you drink juice or soda from a can, recycle that can, instead of throwing it in the trash. That can, will stay in the Recycling Loop and out of the landfill.
What are recyclable materials?
Aluminum and steel cans, cardboard, glass, newspapers and plastic bottles are all recyclable. These items can be made into new products including cans that hold food and drinks, the steel used to build skyscrapers and school buses and even playground equipment!
It’s up to you to protect the environment!
Keeping our planet clean and safe is everyone’s duty. If you make a habit of reducing, reusing and recycling, you can make the world a better place. So, go for it!

In 1962, the Chinese government decided to change this. A group of foresters came to Saihanba. Life was very hard there. The temperature could drop to -40°C in winter. There was no house to live in and little food to eat. However, these foresters did not give up. They planted trees year after year. Many trees died in the beginning, but they kept trying.
▲ First, they found the right kind of trees that could survive in the cold and dry soil. Second, they developed new planting methods. After nearly 60 years of hard work, the miracle happened. Today, Saihanba is once again a huge forest. It is now known as the “Green Pearl” of North China.
The change brings many benefits. The forest stops sandstorms from reaching Beijing. It also provides clean water and fresh air for millions of people. Many rare animals and birds have returned to their home.
However, protecting the forest is still a long job. The foresters say, “Planting trees is easy, but keeping them alive is hard.” They continue to watch over the forest every day. Do you know anything about the balance of nature? Here is an example.
Not many years ago, some farmers were worried because hawks (鹰) took many of their chickens, so the farmers killed many hawks. They didn’t need to worry about their chickens. But then they had new worries. Mice ate the farmers’ food. How did this happen? Hawks ate not only chickens but also mice. They ate more mice than chickens. But the farmers did not know this. When they killed many hawks, they changed the balance of nature.
Changing the balance is bad for nature. Sometimes when people move into a new place, they often cut down many plants. Some of these plants are food for animals. If the animals cannot find food to eat, they will die.
Here is another example. In a place of the US, the giraffes ate a kind of rose, and the lions there ate the giraffes. But people killed many lions to protect the giraffes. Soon many giraffes ate up all the roses. Then the giraffes began to eat leaves of young trees. These trees were important to people. So people thought of many ways to protect trees.
Trees also provide us with delicious fruit and wonderful drinks. For example, we can make tea from the leaves of the tea tree.
Trees do so much for us. We can’t imagine a world without them. However, humans are not treating trees in a kind way. We are cutting down forests all around the world. Grain for Green did several things. It stopped people from cutting down trees and letting animals eat too much grass. It also gave farmers money to plant trees and grass. By 2016, about 30,000 square kilometers of land were turned into forests and grasslands. And the amount of plant life grew by 25%. As a result, animals and birds started to come back. “When the environment got better, many birds returned,” said Yan Rufeng, an expert on the environment.
Not all local people wanted to make the changes, ________. The land is now the lively home for plants and animals.
