Near Australia’s coast, humpback whales swim with bottlenose dolphins
ahead of them. A camera on one whale recorded this scene—and it’s more
common than scientists thought.
A new study in Discover Animals looked at 199 times when 19 types of
whales and dolphins met and acted together worldwide. A quarter of these might
be “friendly” like playing. But we don’t know if the animals are aware of each
other or just having fun.
Eighty per cent of the time, dolphins swam near whales’ heads. Sometimes
they touched whales on purpose. Dolphins also went bow riding—surfed the wave
in front of whales’ heads, like they do with boats.

Some whales answered back. Humpbacks often swam toward the dolphins,
turned over to show their white stomachs, or reached out their fins toward them.
Gray whales also turned over, and southern right whales hit the water with their
fins (a way to “talk”).Once, humpbacks even lifted a dolphin on their noses—
and it wasn’t angry or fighting.
Not all animal meetings are friendly: Dolphins sometimes kill porpoises just
for fun. Also, fin whales, blue whales, and northern right whales almost never
responded to the dolphins.
Play helps animals’ brains and social bonds. Knowing they play like humans
can make people care more about protecting them.#3.7
