In Canada, you find dogs, cats, horses etc, in almost every family. These are their pets. People love these pets and regard them as their good friends. Before they keep them at their houses, they take them to animal hospitals to give them vaccines (疫苗) so they won’t carry disease (疾病). They have special animal stores, though they can get animal food in almost every store. Some people spend about two hundred Canadian dollars a month on animal food.
When you visit people’s homes, they would be very glad to show you their pets and they are very proud of them. You will also find almost every family has a bird feeder in their garden. All kinds of birds are welcomed to come and have a good meal. They are free to come and go and nobody is allowed to kill any animals in Canada. They have a law against killing wild animals. If you killed an animal, you would be punished (惩罚). If an animal happened to get run over by a car, people would be very sad about it.
People in Canada have many reasons to like animals. One of them might be: their family tie (关系) is not as close as ours. Zoos attract millions of visitors every year, but they remain a controversial topic. While some see them as valuable education centers, others argue that they do more harm than good to wildlife.
Critics point out that zoo animals often suffer from physical and mental problems. The living spaces are much smaller than their natural homes. Animals cannot run, hunt, or live freely like they do in the wild. Many of them were taken away from their families. This causes them mental pain. In some parks, dolphins and whales must do tricks for visitors. These animals often die much earlier than those living in the ocean.
However, supporters believe zoos do important work. First, zoos teach the public about animals and why we need to protect nature. Many children first see wild animals in zoos and learn to love them. Second, zoos save animals that were hurt or kept illegally as pets. Third, zoo scientists study animal diseases and find ways to keep them healthy.
The most important job of zoos today is saving endangered animals. Some rare animals have difficulty finding mates in the wild. Zoos help them breed safely. When there are enough animals, some may return to their natural homes. This helps keep their populations.
But there are still problems. Not all zoos treat animals well. Some sell extra animals to circuses or hunting farms. These places are dangerous for the animals.
In conclusion, whether zoos benefit animals largely depends on their management quality. Well-run zoos help animals and people. Poor zoos only cause suffering. We should support good zoos and improve the bad ones.

Koalas are often called koala bears, but they are not bears. They have small eyes, a large nose and round ears. And they have no tails. They can run as fast as a rabbit. They are also good at climbing trees.
Koalas live in eucalyptus trees (桉树) and feed on the tree leaves. They usually sleep about 20 hours a day. The word “koala” comes from an Australian word. It means “no drink”. Koalas don’t drink much. They get water from what they eat.
Much like kangaroos, koalas have pouches (育儿袋) for carrying their young. A koala mother usually gives birth to one joey (幼兽) at a time. The joey is only 2 cm long. It has no hair, no ears, and is blind. As soon as it’s born, it finds its way to its mother’s pouch, and stays there for about 6 months. That’s about how long it takes for the joey to see, grow ears and hair, and walk on its own. By 8 to 9 months the joey becomes too large to get into the pouch, and spends all its time on its mother’s back. At about 12 months, it leaves its mother to build its own home. A koala usually can live for 16 years.
Now koalas are in great danger. Their numbers are dropping every year. To save koalas, a group called Bangalow Koalas was set up in 2019. For years, it has planted over 336,000 trees. The group hopes to plant 500,000 trees by 2027. “I can’t imagine a world with no koalas at all. We’re going to do everything we can to make sure that doesn’t happen,” said Ms. Sparrow, a worker from the group.

Whether (是否) you’ve noticed it or not, fewer and fewer bees are around us now. More than half of the world’s 25,000 bee species (品种) have disappeared (消失) since 1990.
There are many reasons for that, including too much use of pesticides (杀虫剂), loss of plants and human activities that damage (破坏) their living places. But the main reason is the climate (气候) change, which is changing the bees’ environments in a faster way than they are able to get used to.
A map of where bees live across the world was just made by scientists from China and the US. To help people know about bees and protect them better, they tried to find out different species of bees in different areas. According to the map, there are more species of bees in the north half than in the south half of the earth, and more in dry warm areas than in wet forest areas.
In fact, bees are important contributors to humans and the whole world. When bees are flying from one place to another, they are helping many plants to pollinate (授粉). In other words, without bees, fresh fruit and vegetables would be fewer and fewer around the world. Therefore, we humans should make our efforts to protect bees.
As for what to do to help, plant some plants to attract bees to your garden. If you see bees around you, take some photos and post them on the Internet so scientists can help find out where bees live and how bees move. We can think of more ideas to save bees around the world.
1.Which is NOT a reason for the decline in bee species?
A.Wide use of pesticides. B.Worse living places.
C.The fast climate change. D.Less fresh fruit and fewer vegetables.
2.Which does the bee map tell us?

3.What does the underlined word “contributors” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Visitors. B.Helpers. C.Learners. D.Strangers.
4.What is the main purpose of this text?
A.To explain how bees pollinate plants. B.To make more people protect bees.
C.To describe different bee species. D.To discuss the danger of losing bees.
This April in northern England, a strange sight caught people’s eyes: a “huge bird” was walking through the fields! The “bird” looked like something in a fantasy movie. In fact, it was Matt Trevelyan, a 46-year-old bird lover wearing a handmade Eurasian curlew (白腰杓鹬) costume (服装)!
In the UK, the number of curlews is becoming smaller and smaller at a worrying speed. Farming and building projects are gradually destroying their homes in wetlands. Besides, foxes, crows and even rats often eat their eggs and young birds as food, which makes the situation worse.
Matt works in a protected natural area. He spent three days creating the curlew costume with bamboo, cloth, and plastic. Then, he wore it and walked 53 miles along the Nidderdale Way. This unusual walk wasn’t for fun. It carried a meaningful purpose—calling attention to the Eurasian curlew.
Matt’s idea came from a writer named Mary Colwell. In 2016, Mary walked about 500 miles across the British Isles to learn more about curlews and make people care more about them. In the following years, she created World Curlew Day. In April, 2018, Mary wrote a book called Curlew Moon to share her journey. After raising some money, Mary formed Curlew Action, an organization saving the birds from dying out.
Matt wanted to do something similar. His walk was his own way of supporting the birds’ protection. Even one person can make a difference in protecting animals. Maybe we can all do something to help, too!
1.According to the text, what may make Eurasian curlews in the UK fewer?
A.They don’t have enough food. B.They have fewer places to live.
C.They lay fewer eggs than before. D.They are hunted by human hunters.
2.Why did Matt dress up as a curlew?
A.To make people laugh. B.To study the bird’s habits.
C.To call for curlew protection. D.To try a new form of costume.
3.What is the right order of the following events?
①Mary built an organization. ②Curlew Moon came out.
③Mary had a 500-mile walk. ④Mary created World Curlew Day.
A.②①③④ B.③④①② C.②①④③ D.③④②①
4.Which words can best describe Matt Trevelyan?
A.Honest and brave. B.Wise and strict.
C.Kind and creative. D.Friendly and polite.
5.What does the writer mainly want to tell us?
A.Little efforts matter to animal protection.
B.Mary cares a lot about animal protection.
C.Animal costumes are needed in animal protection.
D.Unusual actions are better for animal protection.

Do you know magpies? Magpies are as important a part of Beijing as the Palace Museum and Beijing Duck. But how much do you know about this type of bird?
In the Chinese culture, magpies are called xique, which means “the bird of happiness”. People believe that seeing magpies can bring them good luck. The birds even have a special job in the Chinese story of the Qixi Festival. It’s said that magpies would build the bridge (桥) in the sky for Niulang and Zhinu so that they could get together once a year. As a result, magpies stand for (代表) true love too.
Magpies have black and white feathers with light blue tails. With their special “zhazhazha” sounds from early morning till night, it is not difficult for birdwatchers(观鸟者) to notice them. You can always see them chatting (聊天) on the roof (屋顶) or in the branches.
Magpies have some very interesting living habits. They always live around humans. In winter, many magpies turn to a more plant-rich diet(饮食). Their diet includes about 60% vegetables. Sometimes they may look for food on the ground but not eat it right now. Instead, they will save the food for the future.
Even more surprisingly, they stay around the dead birds and make sad sounds. It is just like they are holding a funeral (葬礼). All these unbelievable things lead some people to believe that magpies may be the cleverest of all birds.
Well, Beijing’s noisiest bird is also one of its smartest ones. Maybe these little birds can really bring a little luck too.
1.What does the magpie’s Chinese name mean according to the article?
2.What do magpies look like?
3.What do magpies mainly live on in winter?
4.What do magpies do for their dead friends?

Many people like the idea of having a bird as a pet. Birds are colorful, they can sing, and they look very cute. But before you buy one, think carefully! Birds are different from other pets. They have special needs.
First, birds need friends. Unlike dogs or cats, birds can’t be alone (独自的) for too long. They are social (社交型的) animals and need to be with other birds or people. If they stay alone all day without anyone to talk to, they wouldn’t feel fun.
At first, you will enjoy watching it fly around or listening to it sing. But after some time, you may not like it. Birds need a lot of care and if you are too busy with schoolwork or other things, you might not have enough time for them.
Finally, birds can live for many years. Some kinds of birds live for 20 years or more. This means keeping a bird takes you many years. You need to make sure you can take care of it for a long time, not just for a few months.

1.Which of the following is TRUE?

A.What koalas love doing. B.How long koalas sleep a day.
C.Koalas’ eating and living habits. D.The meaning and history of koalas.
3.How long does it take a new-born koala to see the world?
A.16 years. B.12 months. C.8 to 9 months. D.Half a year.

A.Bees like living in wet places. B.Bees are protected better than before.
C.Where different bee species live. D.The south half of the earth has more bees.

【答案】1.B 2.C 3.D 4.C 5.A

While birds can be great pets, they need more care than many people think. Before buying a bird, ask yourself if you have enough time and energy to care for it. Remember, a pet is a friend for life, so think twice before you buy one!
