“I have cancer.” Mom said and held me in a tight hug. I could feel her body shaking as she tried not to cry but failed.
For all of my twenty-four years, my mom had been supportive. Strength and protection had always flowed from her to me. Now I knew it would have to flow the other way.
Mom didn’t stay down for long. After the shock of breast cancer, she armed herself with a notebook and a pen and a thousand questions for the doctors. She took notes on white blood cell counts and medications with long names as though she were studying for entrance exams into medical school. “The not-knowing is the worst.” she said.
The operation was successful. The chemo (化疗) was the harder part. I went with Mom to every chemo treatment. She hardly complained, though her hair was gone and her toenails and fingernails fell out one by one. She joked that she could save money on nail polish and put it toward the doctor bills, even though she never wore nail polish. “Cancer can take my hair, my nails, my health, my very life. But it can’t take my smile.” Mom said.
Mom learned to share her fears with me, and it formed an even deeper connection between us. Yet, I am certain there were fears she didn’t share because she was still protecting me—worries she only shared with Dad. Even in the darkest hours, she would just joke about the cancer. Mom always said, “When you look your greatest fear in the eye and laugh at it, you take away some of its power.”
Mom was one of the lucky ones. She did beat her cancer, though not without scars (伤疤) From her, I’ve learned I may not get to choose what I face, but I do get to choose how I face it.
19. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. There were other useful ways to treat cancer.
B. Knowledge of cancer would be helpful.
C. Mom had to stay stronger to beat cancer.
D. I should be the one supporting and caring for Mom.
20. Which of the following words can best describe Mom?
A. Positive and determined. B. Caring and knowledgeable.
C. Humorous and responsible. D. Helpful and successful.
21. What is the fifth paragraph mainly about?
A. The jokes Mom told me. B. The fear Mom shared with me.
C. The ways Mom faced fear. D. The connection Mom and I formed.
22. What lesson did the author learn from Mom?
A. Jokes matter in beating diseases. B. Positiveness gets one through hardship.
C. Fear does no good to one’s health. D. Sharing helps reduce suffering a lot.
【答案】19. D 20. A 21. C 22. B

【21题详解】
第5段,母亲学会和作者分享恐惧,同时仍用玩笑面对癌症,她的名言“When you look your greatest fear in the eye and laugh at it, you take away some of its power.” 点明了她直面恐惧、用乐观消解恐惧的方式,因此本段主要讲母亲面对恐惧的方法。
【22题详解】
最后一段“From her, I’ve learned I may not get to choose what I face, but I do get to choose how I face it.”,作者从母亲身上学到:虽然无法选择遭遇的困境,但可以选择用积极的态度去面对,这种乐观能帮助人度过难关。

Being a teenager can be challenging, but it can also be exciting. You’re gradually losing dependence on parents and making decisions for yourself. You are also learning to take risks and solve problems better than you could before. And changes are happening throughout your body, even in your brain.
You can’t see the changes in your brain, but they’re influencing how you develop into an adult. At this time in your life, there is a process going on inside your brain that makes it work faster and more efficiently. Imagine that the inside of your brain is like a big road map. There are lots of roads leading to different destinations (终点). When you were a child, as you learned new things, your brain created more roads leading to different destinations. By the time you become a teenager, the most important places on the map have many different roads leading to them. Now your brain’s job is to make that map more efficient. It removes the roads that you don’t need and works to make the other roads faster.
As a result, your experiences as a teenager actually influence the way that your brain develops. If you spend hours playing video games, what skills do you use? You learn to see something with your eyes and react to it with your hands, right? As you develop those skills, your brain is making sure that the roads leading to them are especially fast and efficient. So, your video game playing could be preparing you for a career such as a fighter pilot, or even a dentist.
This is a great time for you to practice new skills and discover what you’re good at and what you love doing. Go out and try different activities, and stick with them if you think they’re useful. Remember that with everything you do, you’re shaping your brain for the future.
23. As a teenager, you are becoming more ________.
A. challenging B. changeable C. excited D. independent
24. According to paragraph 2, how does the brain work in developing a teenager into an adult?
A. By working more efficiently. B. By creating more new things.
C. By finding more destinations. D. By changing its inside map.
25. According to the writer, what should teenagers do to shape the brain for the future?
A. They should learn to be more efficient.
B. They should never stop practicing skills.
C. They should keep trying meaningful activities.
D. They should play more video games when possible.
26. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. How a teenager develops skills. B. How the brain helps you develop.
C. How playing computer games helps. D. How the brain changes at different ages.
【答案】23. D 24. A 25. C 26. B

After years of heated discussion, gray wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone National Park. Fourteen wolves were caught in Canada and transported to the park. By last year, the Yellowstone wolf population had grown to more than 170 wolves.
Gray wolves once were seen here and there in the Yellowstone area and much of the continental United States, but they were gradually displaced by human development. By the 1920s, wolves had practically disappeared from the Yellowstone area. They went farther north into the deep forests of Canada, where there were fewer humans around.
The disappearance of the wolves had many unexpected results. Deer and elk populations, the main food sources (来源) for the wolf, grew rapidly. These animals ate large amounts of vegetation (植被), which made plant diversity less in the park. In the absence of wolves, coyote populations also grew quickly. The coyotes killed a large percentage of the park’s red foxes, and completely drove away the park’s beavers.
As early as 1966, biologists asked the government to consider reintroducing gray wolves to Yellowstone Park. They hoped that these gray wolves would be able to control the elk and coyote problems. Many farmers opposed the plan because they feared that wolves would kill their farm animals or pets.
The government spent nearly 30 years coming up with a plan to reintroduce the wolves. The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service carefully monitors and manages the wolf packs in Yellowstone. Today, the discussion continues over how well the gray wolf is fitting in at Yellowstone. Elk, deer, and coyote populations are down, while beavers and red foxes have made a comeback. The Yellowstone wolf project has been a valuable experiment to help biologists decide whether to reintroduce wolves to other parts of the country as well.
27. What is the text mainly about?
A. Wildlife research in the United States.
B. Plant diversity in the Yellowstone area.
C. The problem between farmers and gray wolves.

A. tested. B. separated. C. forced out. D. helped out.
29. What result did the disappearance of gray wolves bring about?
A. Harm to local ecosystem.
B. A fall in the percentage of coyotes.
C. Protection of vegetation.
D. An increase in animals’ population.
30. What is the author’s attitude towards the Yellowstone wolf project?
A. Doubtful. B. Positive. C. Unsatisfied. D. Uncaring.

One day, Ben was playing basketball in the living room after school when he accidentally threw the ball at a vase sitting on the shelf. The vase dropped to the floor and a large piece broke off. What made Ben more upset was that the vase was not a common decoration but an expensive antique, which was handed down through generations from the 18th century. It was also his mother’s favorite possession. To cover his terrible action, the terrified boy glued the pieces together hurriedly and put the vase back to its place.
As the mother cleaned the vase (花瓶) every day, she naturally noticed the cracks (裂纹) that evening. To her surprise, the repair work was actually very good. At dinner time, she asked her boy if he had broken the vase. Fearing punishment, the suddenly inspired boy said that a neighbor’s cat jumped in from the window and he couldn’t drive it away no matter how hard he tried. It raced around the living room and finally her son lied, for all the windows were closed before she left for work each morning and opened after she returned. However, in the face of her son’s nervous eyes and the doubtful looks of the other family members, Ben’s mother remained calm. She realized she shouldn’t just simply blame and punish her son for lying. She came up with another idea.
Before going to bed, the boy found a note from his mother in his room, asking him to go to the study at once. The boy thought he would now be punished but, as he had already lied, he was determined to hide the truth to the end, no matter how angry his mum became.
In the study, calmly bathed in the light, his mother’s face showed no sign of anger. On seeing her son push open the door and slowly enter, she took out a box of chocolates and gave him one.

【答案】例文①
The mother said, “This chocolate is a prize for your imagination: a window-opening cat!” Slightly surprised, Ben insisted, “Mom, it was the cat! I promise.” With a forced smile, his mom gave him another chocolate, saying, “A reward for your perfect repair work!” Staring at the chocolates, the boy hesitated yet still hid the truth. Before he could speak, his mom handed him a third chocolate, saying, “And this one is for your bravery to stick to your decision.”
Now with some chocolates in his hand, the boy’s bad attitude disappeared. Mom saw through everything. Ashamed, the boy hung his head and admitted, “Mom, I broke your favorite vase and lied because I was scared.” Relieved and pleased, the mother hugged him and whispered, “Good boy. It’s never too late to mend.” She gave him the chocolate box and said, “They are all for your honesty. Remember honesty matters more than any antique.”
例文②
The mother said, “This chocolate is a prize for your imagination: a window-opening cat!” Hearing her sincere appreciation, Ben flushed, lowered his head and muttered a thank you. Surprisingly, the mother took out another chocolate and pressed it into his hand. “This one is for the delicate repair work you did to the broken vase.” She added she was moved by how much he cherished the family vase. Ashamed, Ben ducked his head lower and admitted he stayed calm during the accident.
Now with some chocolates in his hand, the boy’s bad attitude disappeared. Sweating nervously, Ben finally looked up, admitting he alone had broken the vase and begged for punishment. “I’m sorry I lied to you, Mum. Please take back the chocolates.” Ashamed and tearful, he held out his hand to return them. Instead, his mother gave him the whole box and smiled, “Honesty deserves the best reward, my dear.”

A. Jokes matter in beating diseases. B. Positiveness gets one through hardship.
C. Fear does no good to one’s health. D. Sharing helps reduce suffering a lot.

D
D. The reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone Park.
28. What does the underlined word “displaced” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. tested. B. separated. C. forced out. D. helped out.
D. Uncaring.
