Ricky lived in a house which had everything you could ever want. Though he didn’t help much around the house, Ricky was pleased when his parents bought home the latest model of robot. As soon as it arrived, it went off cooking, cleaning, and gathering up old clothes from Ricky’s bedroom floor, which Ricky didn’t like having to walk on. On that first day, when Ricky went to sleep, he left his bedroom in a truly bad state(状态). When he woke up the next morning, everything was perfectly clean and tidy.
In fact, it was actually “too” clean; now Ricky couldn’t find his favorite T-shirt and his favorite toy. However much he searched, the two items did not reappear, and the same was starting to happen with other things. Ricky cast a suspicious (怀疑的) eye on the robot. He began following it around the house. Finally he caught it red-handed, picking up one of Ricky’s toys to hide it.
He went off, running to his parents, to tell them that the robot was broken and badly programmed. Ricky asked them to have it changed. But his parents told him absolutely not. They needed the robot very much.
One day, the robot heard the boy’s complaints. The robot returned with one of the boy’s toys and some clothes for him. “Here, sir. I did not know it was bothering you,” said the robot, “The objects were left on the floor. I therefore figured that you did not like them. I am programmed to collect all that is not wanted, and at night I send it to places where other humans can use it.”
Ricky started feeling ashamed. He had spent all his life treating things as if they were useless. Yet it was true that many other people would be delighted to treat those things with all the care in the world. Since then, Ricky had put real care into how he treated his things. And often, he would buy things, and take them along with his good friend, the robot, to help out those other people who needed them.

A voice assistant is a piece of intelligent software that responds to voice commands (指令) and can run on any device, including smartphones and computers. Examples include the popular Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri. According to EMAR-KETER’s forecast, by the end of 2024, there will be over 100 million voice assistant users in the US. However, advances in smart home, connected car, and smart TV technologies could show that the use of voice assistants will become more widely integrated (综合的).
Some companies have begun combining AI-powered (人工智能驱动的) voice assistants with their call centers. Banks have quickly adopted these tools. Some banks even use voice-activated commands to perform tasks. Also, businesses can use developer-centric platforms to help expand their operations by making use of AI in many applications (应用), including voice robots.
In August 2023, Voiceflow, a company that focuses on building and introducing conversational AI tools, raised $15 million in funding. The company has customers from famous brands like Amazon, JPMorgan Chase, and The Home Depot, and is just one example of how much money using AI voice features can bring.
The future of voice assistants lies in their increasing combination with AI and machine learning technologies, enabling them to understand and deal with natural language more accurately. The new Alexa’s conversational skills are expected to become more advanced, enabling customers to use the integrated AI for shopping, writing emails and ordering food.
Apple’s upcoming Apple Intelligence will enable Siri to do more like a personal assistant, such as taking spoken and written instructions and using data from the users’ contacts, calendars, maps and preferences to create personalized results.
However, some customers are careful of voice assistants, especially when it comes to sensitive data. It’s strongly advised that companies that are developing the technologies, make their privacy (隐私) policies open and actively build those standards into the technology.
46. What will the popularity of voice assistants lead to?
A. Their competition with smart home applications.
B. Their combination with advanced technologies.
C. Their promoting social communication among people.
D. Their getting rid of the dependence on hardware.
47. Why does the author mention Voiceflow?
A. To describe the company’s customer base.
B. To show the economic value of voice assistants.
C. To introduce the AI tools developed by voice assistants.
D. To stress the company’s source of income.
48. What will future voice assistants be like according to the text?
A. Offering accurate and personalized help.
B. Replacing human assistants gradually.
C. Working easily without Al’s support.
D. Focusing mostly on conversational purposes.
49. What is the main concern about voice assistants?
A. Concerns over high costs of developing voice tools.

Andrew, a little boy, took all his primary school teachers to a nice goodbye dinner before moving on to middle school. He even paid the bill himself. “They loved it,” Andrew’s mom said. “One of his teachers, his math teacher, said, ‘I’ve been teaching for dozens of years and that has never happened.’ All of the teachers were touched by what Andrew had done for them. I was so surprised that a simple gesture such as this would mean so much to people.”
Back in July, on his birthday, Andrew decided to treat his elementary school teachers to dinner and told the decision to his parents. His parents — his mom, a lawyer, and his dad, a teacher in a high school, said, “We are proud of your idea. Your teachers deserve it. We can do you some favor, like helping you contact the restaurant.”
Andrew then began saving his money for the dinner. He spared time to offer services to the neighbors, such as taking care of their babies, helping them pick up newspapers, and doing gardening. What’s more, he sold his old toys on the Internet. All in all, he raised $300.
On October 15, 2024, Andrew hosted a dinner for his teachers at a local restaurant. Andrew’s mom said, “We invited Andrew’s elementary school teachers, including those who didn’t teach anymore. Andrew brought them flowers.”
One of Andrew’s teachers said they were moved by Andrew’s words. She described the scene, “At the beginning of the dinner, Andrew said, ‘The dinner is on me.’ He said our hard work inspired his action. He was obliged to us for teaching him throughout the school years. We replied, ‘Don’t mention it. That’s our job.’ Andrew’s kind behavior proves that teaching is indeed a meaningful job.”

Man and Nature
Nature is closely bonded with humans and serves as the source of our life and resources. We cannot survive or develop without a healthy natural environment, so living in harmony with nature is of great importance.
However, human activities have badly damaged the environment. Waste gas from factories and cars causes air pollution. Besides, overuse of resources and improper rubbish disposal worsen ecological problems.
To change the situation, effective measures are needed. We should choose low-carbon lifestyles, save water and electricity, and recycle waste materials. Moreover, it’s vital to raise public awareness of environmental protection. Only by protecting nature can we gain a sustainable future.
