Whether you are writing a business email or a long research essay, the dictionary can be a
powerful tool to assist you in becoming a better writer in English
You can use the main A-Z of the dictionary to help you:
Choose your words carefully. Many words in English have similar or related meanings, but
they are used in different contexts or situations.Look carefully at the example sentences provided
in the entries for words you want to use.If you need academic vocabulary, look for the AW
symbol.
Combine words naturally and effectively. In English, certain pairs of words go together and
sound natural to native speakers (for example, heavy rain)-and others do not (strong rain).
Information on which words can be paired with one another can be found in the example sentences
in the dictionary entries.
Become more flexible.Rather than repeating the same word or phrase many times in your
work, try to find other ways to express your ideas.Look for SYN symbol to find synonyms
)and also study the synonym notes.Look for word families and try using words in the same
family that are different parts of speech(e.g.different,adjective and differ, verb).
Edit and check your work. You can use your dictionary to check any problem areas such as
spelling,parts of speech,irregular forms,grammar,phrasal verbs,and prepositions.
In the following sections you will find examples of essays and practical types of writing that
you can use as models for your own work. You will also find advice on planning, organizing and
writing each type of text.

When I was younger,I couldn't wait to escape from Ramsgate, the harbor town where I grew
up on the Isle of Thanet. It could feel small:the same faces in the same places, and where a new
cafe or gallery was often met with doubt. There was this apparent insistence that life was fine as it
was.But for a teenager eager to see more, that lack of curiosity was disheartening.
So I left.I headed north for a four-year academic journey from York to Durham. After
university, having played at newspapers,I made the move to London to do it for real. But the
reality was tough.I struggled to contribute to various dailies before periods on staff at both
magazines and newspapers. In my twenties,I threw myself into city life:sampling Mediterranean
restaurants, navigating around on the Tube, and staying out late with friends.
For a while,it was enough. Then it became too much.In and among the sharing plates,I found
myself on an unending rat race of moving faster and needing to earn more-just to keep up.Rents
in London were pressing, apartments were tiny, yet the dream of owning one felt like a cruel joke.
As I got older, trips back to Thanet opened my eyes to what I had left behind.Mainly,it was
the sea.Wide yellow sands and even the touch of salt in the air, ordinary in childhood, suddenly felt
appealing. But I also started to miss the beat of small-town life:waving to people on the street,
noticing whose garden was overgrown, finding charm even in the pubs I had once dismissed.
What's more,where I'd once hurried to leave,others are now rushing to arrive.Artists,creatives,
and technologists have been priced out of London and are pouring to Thanet, bringing new ideas
and drive. Now,when I head back home,I feel a mixture of pride and mild wonder:the place I once
thought I'd outgrown has had a facelift I wasn't expecting.
I'll keep returning to Thanet, with eager willingness. Each visit reminds me that places, like
people, can grow without losing their essence.I've come to love Thanet as more than just the home
I left;it is now the place it continues to become.
24.Why did the author want to leave Ramsgate?
A.It offered few job opportunities.
B.It lacked modern entertainment.
C.It stuck to values he disagreed with.
D.It failed to satisfy his desire to explore.
25.Which of the following best summarizes the author's life in London?
A.Rich in possibilities.
B.Filled with challenges.
C.Socially diverse.
D.Financially stressful.
26.What can we learn about the author's bond with Thanet over time?
A.It remains stable and strong.
B.It shifts from rejection to reconnection.
C.It is influenced by public opinions.
D.It is shaped by his childhood experience.
27.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Sea in Memory
B.Four Years Up North
C.A Growing Place,a Growing Me
D.The Hometown Out of Reach
C
On my first day at my current job,I came to work expecting a friendly welcome-but I was
met with silence. After a quick introduction to the business manager,I was told where to get my ID
and then left to figure the rest out on my own.I distinctly remember walking into my first
departmental meeting, eager to meet my colleagues, only for the boss to skip over introducing me
entirely. Not really the type of environment that inspires a feeling of belonging.
The initial isolation stuck with me.Instead of waiting for the workplace culture to change,I
decided to create my own sense of community.I started a lunch group, which grew into a regular
coffee hour.I invited new hires to join informal meetups, fostering connections before and after
department meetings.Over time,.this small,self-made network became my anchor(精神支柱)at
work. But what if I hadn't built that community myself?
Chances are I would have left the job.Increasingly, researchers are realizing that cultivating a
sense of belonging is critical for workforce stability.Historically, studies on supporting workforce
stability have focused on more fundamental factors like pay, hours, and workload. These are all
important qualities that cannot be ignored. But they are not sufficient.
You must have heard of Maslow's hierarchy of needs. The theory suggests lower-level needs
must be met before you can progress to higher-level needs. At the base of Maslow's hierarchy,
physiological and safety needs must be met. This is where fundamentals like pay, hours, and
workplace safety would fall.Just above that is the need for love and belonging. In a workplace, this
translates to a sense of connection and feeling like part of the team.
According to Maslow's theory,it's impossible to be the best version of ourselves without
meeting these fundamental needs. So although, yes, being paid fairly is important,to motivate
employees to operate at their highest level, you need to cultivate an environment where people feel
they truly matter.
28.What did the writer experience on the first day of his new job?
A.A hearty reception from colleagues.
B.Emotional distance between coworkers.
C.Thorough guidance at the workplace.
D.Brief training from the business manager
29.What is the writer's purpose of starting a lunch group?
A.Establishing a regular break time.
B.Building up a shared identity.
C.Conducting meetings during meals
D.Passing on the workplace culture.
30.Why does the writer introduce Maslow's theory?
A.To describe an ideal working environment.
B.To discuss anchor's role in job satisfaction.

Imagine you are preparing a class presentation when you suddenly remember you forgot to
feed the cat.You grab your phone to text your mum,but an ad jumps out:"50%off your favourite
brand!"One tap leads to another;ten minutes later you have looked through reviews, filled a cart
and almost missed your own slide. This phenomenon is called "popcorn(爆米花)brain”.
The term was introduced in 2011 by researcher David Levy from the University of Washington.
It describes a mental state where attention wanders, and thoughts jump quickly from one topic to
another-just like popcorn popping rapidly in a hot pan.
People with popcorn brain find it hard to concentrate or maintain a clear line of thinking.
University of California Researcher Gloria Mark tracked 2,000 American office workers and
students in her two-decade study on attention with silent screen recorders and heart-rate belts. In
2004 people stayed on one task for 2.5 minutes on average;by 2020 the figure had fallen to 47
seconds.Heart-rate data showed that every extra switch raised a stress hormone (by about
7%.
Studies show that digital technology especially social media, worsens this condition.Data
Reportal's 2024 report pooled screen-time records from 1.3 million users in 40 countries and found
further proof. For instance, people in America aged 16-24 averaged 7 hours 3 minutes online per
day, equaling roughly 17 years of adult life.Such constant digital exposure trains the brain to prefer
short bursts of information. As a result, focusing on one task becomes harder.Information overload
also affects memory,decision-making,and emotional control.
The cure,tested in follow-up trials,is brief:set clear tech boundaries.Recommended strategies
include limiting daily screen time, turning off non-essential notification, and creating tech-free
periods or spaces.Building a structured daily routine is also advised:individuals can begin by
measuring their current focus duration, then set realistic goals and stick to a fixed schedule for
important tasks. This consistent practice strengthens habits and prepares your mind and body to
focus on the task for a longer period without getting popcorn brain.
32.How does the author present the issue in paragraph 1?
A.By defining a concept.
B.By providing statistics
C.By giving an example.
D.By introducing a presentation
33.What can be inferred from the data in Gloria Mark's study?
A.Attention on a task dropped half in decades.
B.Frequent switching may increase mental stress.
C.People's average screen time decreased steadily.
D.Shortened screen time may lead to higher heart risk.
34.What does the underlined word"pooled"in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Evaluated.
B.Created
C.Published.
D.Collected.
35.How can we prevent getting"popcorn brain"according to the passage?
A.Setting aside no-device areas.
B.Changing daily schedules flexibly
C.Reducing the use of media platforms.
D.Checking essential notification regularly.

What if you could meet most of your daily needs-shopping,work,education,healthcare-
within a 15-minute walk or bike ride from your home? This is the exciting vision of the"15-minute
city",an urban planning concept that gained global attention years ago. However, putting it into
practice has sparked unexpected and fierce opposition.
The concept was popularized by Mayor Anne Hidalgo of Paris and based on the research of
French scholar Carlos Moreno. It suggests a move from city planning centered mainly on cars to
one focused on "chronic-urbanism".The goal is to return urban space to people, with more parks
and streets for walking.Advocates argue that this model addresses multiple crises all at the same
time:climate change,social isolation,and public health.
Despite its apparent benefits, opponents have misrepresented the idea online, framing it as a
secret government plan to control people's free movement. While these claims are baseless, they
have gained support, influencing public opinion and making it harder for cities like Oxford and
Melbourne to carry out the concept.
The real issue, however, goes deeper than misinformation. It points to a fundamental problem
in urban innovation:the difficulty of imagining a life less dependent on the private car.For decades,
the car has symbolized personal freedom and status.Any policy that seems to reduce car use, even
if it aims to enhance overall quality of life, can make people feel emotionally upset. This reflects
what transport experts call"car dependency",a cultural and deep-rooted habit that is hard to break.
The situation mirrors past urban conflicts. For instance, many people opposed creating
walking-only streets in city centers decades ago,but now, such areas are mostly loved and valued.
The experts of a recent study on sustainable transition conclude that the battle for the 15-minute
city is not just about planning;it's about messaging.Success depends not only on smart design but
also on effectively conveying its vision of a more sustainable and human urban future.
36.What can we learn about"chronic-urbanism"in paragraph 2?
A.It focuses on car development.
B.It aims to expand road networks.
C.It gives more space to people.
D.It was created by Carlos Moreno.
37.What do the opponents think of the 15-minute city?
A.Freedom-limiting.B.Money-wasting.C.Traffic-slowing.D.Tech-demanding.
38.What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A.The definition of car dependency.
B.The significance of private cars.
C.The public's reactions to a new policy.
D.The challenge of a less car-centered life
39.What does the experts'conclusion imply in the last paragraph?
A.Public opinions are too hard to change.
B.Sustainable transition is the top priority.
C.Communication matters as much as design.
D.Planning should send an innovative message.

How to express hurt feelings
Expressing hurt feelings can be challenging, especially for teenagers.40 Luckily, there
are some simple techniques on how to effectively express your hurt feelings.
41 Before you approach someone to tell them that they've hurt your feelings, identify
exactly why you feel hurt. It's important to give a specific reason for your hurt feelings so that you
can express this to the person who hurt you.If you're unsure about why you feel hurt, review what
happened in your mind or write about it.
Take a few deep breaths and try to relax. If you're feeling overwhelmed by your emotions, take
a few deep breaths in and out before speaking with the persons.42 You may also find it
hard to communicate what you're feeling if you are overcome with emotions. If taking deep breaths
doesn't seem to help, try taking a brisk walk or doing push-ups.This will help to release endorphins
(内啡肽)and clear your head.
Use "I"statements to communicate what you're feeling.43 Instead,express your
feelings by using "I"rather than "you".Explain the issue in an objective way. This will be less
likely to put the person on the defensive. For example, you might say,"I felt hurt that I didn't get a
call to tell me you couldn't make it yesterday."
Listen carefully to the other person's response. After you've expressed your hurt feelings, give
the other person a chance to respond.Listen to what they have to say with your full attention. They
might not have realized they hurt you,or they may have a different view on the situation.44
A.Give a specific example when you talk.
B.Think about what you're feeling and why.
C.Avoid blaming the person for how you feel.
D.You can express your feelings in a more reasonable way.
E.Having an open dialogue can lead to a better understanding and resolution.
F.However,it's important to communicate to maintain your emotional well-being.
G.Talking to them when you're feeling angry, stressed,or tearful can make matters worse.

Whether you are writing a business email or a long research essay, the dictionary can be a powerful tool to assist you in becoming a better writer in English.
You can use the main A — Z of the dictionary to help you:
• Choose your words carefully. Many words in English have similar or related meanings, but they are used in different contexts or situations. Look carefully at the example sentences provided in the entries for words you want to use. If you need academic vocabulary, look for the AW symbol.
• Combine words naturally and effectively. In English, certain pairs of words go together and sound natural to native speakers (for example, heavy rain) — and others do not (strong rain). Information on which words can be paired with one another can be found in the example sentences in the dictionary entries.
• Become more flexible. Rather than repeating the same word or phrase many times in your work, try to find other ways to express your ideas. Look for SYN symbol to find synonyms (同义词) and also study the synonym notes. Look for word families and try using words in the same family that are different parts of speech (e.g. different, adjective and differ, verb).
• Edit and check your work. You can use your dictionary to check any problem areas such as spelling, parts of speech, irregular forms, grammar, phrasal verbs, and prepositions.
In the following sections you will find examples of essays and practical types of writing that you can use as models for your own work. You will also find advice on planning, organizing and writing each type of text.

When I was younger, I couldn’t wait to escape from Ramsgate, the harbor town where I grew up on the Isle of Thanet. It could feel small: the same faces in the same places, and where a new café or gallery was often met with doubt. There was this apparent insistence that life was fine as it was. But for a teenager eager to see more, that lack of curiosity was disheartening.
So I left. I headed north for a four-year academic journey from York to Durham. After university, having played at newspapers, I made the move to London to do it for real. But the reality was tough. I struggled to contribute to various dailies before periods on staff at both magazines and newspapers. In my twenties, I threw myself into city life: sampling Mediterranean restaurants, navigating around on the Tube, and staying out late with friends.
For a while, it was enough. Then it became too much. In and among the sharing plates, I found myself on an unending rat race of moving faster and needing to earn more —just to keep up. Rents in London were pressing, apartments were tiny, yet the dream of owning one felt like a cruel joke.
As I got older, trips back to Thanet opened my eyes to what I had left behind. Mainly, it was the sea. Wide yellow sands and even the touch of salt in the air, ordinary in childhood, suddenly felt appealing. But I also started to miss the beat of small-town life: waving to people on the street, noticing whose garden was overgrown, finding charm even in the pubs I had once dismissed. What’s more, where I’d once hurried to leave, others are now rushing to arrive. Artists, creatives, and technologists have been priced out of London and are pouring to Thanet, bringing new ideas and drive. Now, when I head back home, I feel a mixture ofpride and mild wonder: the place I once thought I’d outgrown has had a facelift I wasn’t expecting.
I’ll keep returning to Thanet, with eager willingness. Each visit reminds me that places, like people, can grow without losing their essence. I’ve come to love Thanet as more than just the home I left; it is now the place it continues to become.
24. Why did the author want to leave Ramsgate?
A. It offered few job opportunities. B. It lacked modern entertainment.
C. It stuck to values he disagreed with. D. It failed to satisfy his desire to explore.
25. Which of the following best summarizes the author’s life in London?
A. Rich in possibilities. B. Filled with challenges.
C. Socially diverse. D. Financially stressful.
26. What can we learn about the author’s bond with Thanet over time?
A. It remains stable and strong. B. It shifts from rejection to reconnection.
C. It is influenced by public opinions. D. It is shaped by his childhood experience.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Sea in Memory B. Four Years Up North
C. A Growing Place, a Growing Me D. The Hometown Out ofReach

On my first day at my current job, I came to work expecting a friendly welcome — but I was met with silence. After a quick introduction to the business manager, I was told where to get my ID and then left to figure the rest out on my own. I distinctly remember walking into my first departmental meeting, eager to meet my colleagues, only for the boss to skip over introducing me entirely. Not really the type of environment that inspires a feeling of belonging.
The initial isolation stuck with me. Instead of waiting for the workplace culture to change, I decided to create my own sense of community. I started a lunch group, which grew into a regular coffee hour. I invited new hires to join informal meetups, fostering connections before and after department meetings. Over time, this small, self-made network became my anchor (精神支柱) at work. But what if I hadn’t built that community myself?
Chances are I would have left the job. Increasingly, researchers are realizing that cultivating a sense of belonging is critical for workforce stability. Historically, studies on supporting workforce stability have focused on more fundamental factors like pay, hours, and workload. These are all important qualities that cannot be ignored. But they are not sufficient.
You must have heard of Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. The theory suggests lower-level needs must be met before you can progress to higher-level needs. At the base of Maslow’s hierarchy, physiological and safety needs must be met. This is where fundamentals like pay, hours, and workplace safety would fall. Just above that is the need for love and belonging. In a workplace, this translates to a sense of connection and feeling like part of the team.
According to Maslow’s theory, it’s impossible to be the best version of ourselves without meeting these fundamental needs. So although, yes, being paid fairly is important, to motivate employees to operate at their highest level, you need to cultivate an environment where people feel they truly matter.
28. What did the writer experience on the first day of his new job?
A. A hearty reception from colleagues. B. Emotional distance between coworkers.
C. Thorough guidance at the workplace. D. Brief training from the business manager.
29. What is the writer’s purpose of starting a lunch group?
A. Establishing a regular break time. B. Building up a shared identity.
C. Conducting meetings during meals. D. Passing on the workplace culture.
30. Why does the writer introduce Maslow’s theory?
A. To describe an ideal working environment.
B. To discuss anchor’s role in job satisfaction.
C. To explain factors to keeping the workforce.
D. To suggest an effective management method.
31. What does the last paragraph imply for a workplace?
A. Basic demands are equal to emotional needs.
B. Fair payment is the core of staff motivation.
C. Basic needs make the best versions of staff.
D. A culture of belonging develops staff’s potential.

Imagine you are preparing a class presentation when you suddenly remember you forgot to feed the cat. You grab your phone to text your mum, but an ad jumps out: “50 % off your favourite brand!” One tap leads to another; ten minutes later you have looked through reviews, filled a cart and almost missed your own slide. This phenomenon is called “popcorn (爆米花) brain” .
The term was introduced in 2011 by researcher David Levy from the University of Washington. It describes a mental state where attention wanders, and thoughts jump quickly from one topic to another —just like popcorn popping rapidly in a hot pan.
People with popcorn brain find it hard to concentrate or maintain a clear line of thinking. University of California Researcher Gloria Mark tracked 2,000 American office workers and students in her two-decade study on attention with silent screen recorders and heart-rate belts. In 2004 people stayed on one task for 2.5 minutes on average; by 2020 the figure had fallen to 47 seconds. Heart-rate data showed that every extra switch raised a stress hormone (荷尔蒙) by about 7 %.
Studies show that digital technology especially social media, worsens this condition. Data Reportal’s 2024 report pooled screen-time records from 1.3 million users in 40 countries and found further proof. For instance, people in America aged 16–24 averaged 7 hours 3 minutes online per day, equaling roughly 17 years of adult life. Such constant digital exposure trains the brain to prefer short bursts of information. As a result, focusing on one task becomes harder. Information overload also affects memory, decision-making, and emotional control.
The cure, tested in follow-up trials, is brief: set clear tech boundaries. Recommended strategies include limiting daily screen time, turning off non-essential notification, and creating tech-free periods or spaces. Building a structured daily routine is also advised: individuals can begin by measuring their current focus duration, then set realistic goals and stick to a fixed schedule for important tasks. This consistent practice strengthens habits and prepares your mind and body to focus on the task for a longer period without getting popcorn brain.
32. How does the author present the issue in paragraph 1?
A. By defining a concept. B. By providing statistics.
C. By giving an example. D. By introducing a presentation
33. What can be inferred from the data in Gloria Mark’s study?
A. Attention on a task dropped half in decades.
B. Frequent switching may increase mental stress.
C. People’s average screen time decreased steadily.
D. Shortened screen time may lead to higher heart risk.
34. What does the underlined word “pooled” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Evaluated. B. Created C. Published. D. Collected.
35. How can we prevent getting “popcorn brain” according to the passage?
A. Setting aside no-device areas. B. Changing daily schedules flexibly.
C. Reducing the use of media platforms. D. Checking essential notification regularly.

What if you could meet most of your daily needs — shopping, work, education, healthcare — within a 15-minute walk or bike ride from your home? This is the exciting vision of the “ 15-minute city”, an urban planning concept that gained global attention years ago. However, putting it into practice has sparked unexpected and fierce opposition.
The concept was popularized by Mayor Anne Hidalgo of Paris and based on the research of French scholar Carlos Moreno. It suggests a move from city planning centered mainly on cars to one focused on “chronic-urbanism” . The goal is to return urban space to people, with more parks and streets for walking. Advocates argue that this model addresses multiple crises all at the same time: climate change, social isolation, and public health.
Despite its apparent benefits, opponents have misrepresented the idea online, framing it as a secret government plan to control people’s free movement. While these claims are baseless, they have gained support, influencing public opinion and making it harder for cities like Oxford and Melbourne to carry out the concept.
The real issue, however, goes deeper than misinformation. It points to a fundamental problem in urban innovation: the difficulty of imagining a life less dependent on the private car. For decades, the car has symbolized personal freedom and status. Any policy that seems to reduce car use, even if it aims to enhance overall quality of life, can make people feel emotionally upset. This reflects what transport experts call “car dependency”, a cultural and deep-rooted habit that is hard to break. The situation mirrors past urban conflicts. For instance, many people opposed creating walking-only streets in city centers decades ago, but now, such areas are mostly loved and valued.
The experts of a recent study on sustainable transition conclude that the battle for the 15-minute city is not just about planning; it’s about messaging. Success depends not only on smart design but also on effectively conveying its vision of a more sustainable and human urban future.
36. What can we learn about “chronic-urbanism” in paragraph 2?
A. It focuses on car development. B. It aims to expand road networks.
C. It gives more space to people. D. It was created by Carlos Moreno.
37. What do the opponents think of the 15-minute city?
A. Freedom-limiting. B. Money-wasting. C.Traffic-slowing. D. Tech-demanding.
38. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. The definition of car dependency. B. The significance of private cars.
C. The public’s reactions to a new policy. D. The challenge of a less car-centered life. 39. What does the experts ’ conclusion imply in the last paragraph?
A. Public opinions are too hard to change.
B. Sustainable transition is the top priority.
C. Communication matters as much as design.
D. Planning should send an innovative message.

How to express hurt feelings
Expressing hurt feelings can be challenging, especially for teenagers. 40 Luckily, there are some simple techniques on how to effectively express your hurt feelings.
41 Before you approach someone to tell them that they’ve hurt your feelings, identify exactly why you feel hurt. It’s important to give a specific reason for your hurt feelings so that you can express this to the person who hurt you. If you’re unsure about why you feel hurt, review what happened in your mind or write about it.
Take a few deep breaths and try to relax. If you’re feeling overwhelmed by your emotions, take a few deep breaths in and out before speaking with the persons. 42 You may also find it hard to communicate what you’re feeling if you are overcome with emotions. If taking deep breaths doesn’t seem to help, try taking a brisk walk or doing push-ups. This will help to release endorphins (内啡肽) and clear your head.
Use “I” statements to communicate what you’re feeling. 43 Instead, express your feelings by using “I” rather than “you” . Explain the issue in an objective way. This will be less likely to put the person on the defensive. For example, you might say, “I felt hurt that I didn’t get a call to tell me you couldn’t make it yesterday.”
Listen carefully to the other person’s response. After you’ve expressed your hurt feelings, give the other person a chance to respond. Listen to what they have to say with your full attention. They might not have realized they hurt you, or they may have a different view on the situation. 44
A. Give a specific example when you talk.
B. Think about what you’re feeling and why.
C. Avoid blaming the person for how you feel.
D. You can express your feelings in a more reasonable way.
E. Having an open dialogue can lead to a better understanding and resolution.
F. However, it’s important to communicate to maintain your emotional well-being.
G. Talking to them when you’re feeling angry, stressed, or tearful can make matters worse.
