What do young people like to do in their free time? If you think they are all playing video games or watching short videos on their phones, you might be wrong. In 2026, many young people are turning to something quite different— “grandma hobbies.”
“Grandma hobbies” is a fun name for traditional activities like needlepoint (刺绣) and gardening. These are things that people’s grandmothers used to enjoy. But now, Gen Z (people born after 1997) are falling in love with them.
Emma MacTaggart, 26, from the US, is a good example. She used to work long hours in banking. After work, she would just look through her phone for hours—a habit called “getting lost in her phone.” To change this, she and her roommates decided to try needlepoint. Soon, they became “fully engrossed.” Emma said it was so relaxing that they spent almost all their free time making needlepoint works instead of looking at a screen.
These old hobbies help young people reduce stress and feel relaxed. When they finish a gift or a dish, they feel proud and successful. Social media helps them become more popular. Young people share their works online and make friends. Some even turn their hobbies into businesses. Take Anna Weare as an example, a 31-year-old blacksmith (铁匠)—people now wait a year for her handmade products.
So next time you see a young person blacksmithing, don’t be surprised. It’s the newest cool thing to do!
4. What are “grandma hobbies” according to the passage?
A. Modern mobile phone apps. B. Old-fashioned video games. C. Traditional enjoyable activities.
5. Why did Emma MacTaggart start needlepoint?
A. To make more money. B. To change her lifestyle. C. To pass the time with friends.
6. What does the underlined word “engrossed” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. crazy B. bored C. tired
7. What does the writer mainly want to tell us?
A. “Grandma hobbies” help young people relax and find pleasure.
B. All young people turn their hobbies into successful businesses.
C. Needlepoint is the most popular free-time activity for Gen Z.

①You probably know that thinking is good for the brain. It helps you do things like making plans and controlling your feelings. It can help you do better in different areas like school, sports and work.
②Do you sometimes talk to yourself when you think? It can be really awkward (尴尬的) if someone sees you talking to yourself. But don’t feel bad about it! Talking to yourself is good for you in many ways.
③When encouraging words come out of your mouth, it adds to self-confidence. A 2009 study invited 72 tennis players to take part in some matches. Researchers put the players into two groups: one group that said nothing while playing, and the other that talked to themselves while playing. They found that the self-talkers showed more confidence and played better than those in the silent group.
④Talking to yourself, especially in the third person (第三人称), can also help you deal with bad feelings. “Referring to (指代) yourself in the third person leads you to think about yourself more similar to how you think about others,” said Jason Moser, a professor from Michigan State University, the US. This can help you see things in a different way, especially when you’re feeling sad or angry.
⑤Self-talk also helps improve memory. Researchers tested four different ways to remember things: reading silently, reading aloud, listening to someone else read and listening to a recording of oneself reading. Those who read out loud could think of the information the best, researchers said in their study published (发布) in the magazine Memory.
8. For the brain, which of the following does thinking not help with?
A. Talking to yourself. B. Planning a trip. C. Controlling feelings.
9. According to paragraph 3, what can self-talk help to do?
A. Find out who the best players are. B. Develop a player’s skills. C. Improve one’s confidence.
10. Which way of self-talk can help people deal with bad feelings?
A. Is there anything we can do for her?
B. I have tried my best. Just do what I can.
C. What can Annie do to make the situation better?
11. Which of the following shows how the passage goes?
A. B. C.
D
Yingge dance, a mix of drama, dance and martial arts (武术), is a Chinese national intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) and is very popular in Chaoshan, Guangdong Province. Over a century ago, some Chinese people brought the dance to Thailand, and it has become an important local cultural symbol, deeply rooted in Thai society ever since.
From February 28 to March 1, 2026, the second Phanat Nikhom Yingge Dance Festival was held in Chonburi, Thailand. Seven teams took part in it, including one from Puning, Guangdong and three local Thai teams. The local government hopes the festival can help with cultural exchanges between China and Thailand. What’s more, Yingge dance has even been added to local school courses to pass on this cultural art.
Chinese and Thai performers danced together in the streets of the city. The Chinese Nigou Yingge Team, with about 40 members, came to Thailand for the first time. The team’s coach said it was a valuable chance for Chinese and Thai performers to learn from each other.
A team member with 15 years of experience in Yingge dance was deeply moved by the Thai performers’ strong interest and love for this art form. They talked a lot about face painting and performing skills, even without a common language.
The lively performance drew many local people and tourists. A 17-year-old Thai performer said he was happy to see so many people coming to watch. A local person said Yingge dance has become one of the most famous traditional arts in her hometown. A Chinese visitor from Shantou felt warm and familiar when watching the dance, as it reminded him of his hometown’s culture.
Chonburi’s governor said the province would make Yingge dance a special cultural symbol of Phanat Nikhom, and use it to develop the local economy (经济) and tourism.
12. When was Yingge dance brought to Thailand?
A. Over a century ago. B. On March 1. C. On February 28.
13. What do we know about the second Phanat Nikhom Yingge Festival?
A. It was started by a Chinese Yingge team.
B. It lasted for about six days in Thailand.
C. It had seven teams from different countries.
14. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Members of the Thai team. B. Feelings and skills shared. C. History of Yingge dance.
15. What does the underlined sentence “felt warm and familiar” really mean?
A. The visitor missed his hometown culture.
B. The visitor felt hot in the weather.
C. The visitor knew Thai people very well.

The day starts early for Tang Shengli, a bird protection volunteer in Lanshan, Yongzhou, Hunan Province. At about 5 a.m., the old man is in uniform and ready to start his day’s work protecting and recording migratory birds (候鸟).
Located on the northern side of the Nanling Mountains, Lanshan is an important passageway for migratory birds. From September to December every year, more than 240 kinds of migratory birds fly from Siberia to Australia via (经由) Hunan. In the past 11years, Tang has recorded more than 120 kinds of such birds with his camera. “The flight calls of the migratory birds at night attract me so much that I cannot sleep. I only want to record their lives.” Tang says.
When Tang joined the Hunan Bird Protection Organization (组织) in 2013, he knew he faced a hard task. A number of migratory birds were lost each year because people killed them for trade. Many villagers didn’t think bird hunting was illegal (违法的), and some made a living from it. At that time, during the day, Tang handed out brochures (手册) to villagers in Lanshan to raise public attention of bird protection, while at night, he went deep into the forests to stop illegal hunting.
In 2020, people in Yongzhou set up a new program to stop killing the birds. So far, 43 migratory bird protection stations have been built across Hunan, covering almost all key points on the passageway.
