Have students tell whether the sentences about the volunteer story are true or false. 2. Have students complete a blog post about an athlete’s experience at the Beijing Paralympic Winter Games. Step 2 Presentation 1. Help students understand the athletes by answering the following questions: (1) Who influenced the athlete a lot? (2) How did they influence the athlete? (3) How did the athlete feel about it? (4)Think further: What did the boy need to do to become an athlete and become a member of the Paralympics? 2. Help students understand the importance of supporting the athletes by answering the question: What do people need to do to make the huge event successful? 3. Have students get to know how to help the athletes from Liu Ming’s experience. (1) How did Liu Ming help the athlete? (2) What did the athlete think of Liu Ming? (3) What else do you think volunteers reminded the athletes with disabilities to do or not to do? (4) What does the Organising Committee remind the volunteers to do or not to do when helping the athletes? 4. Guide students to empathize with the athletes through questions as follows: (1) How did the athlete’s feelings about the Games change? (2) What do the Paralympics mean to athletes with disabilities? 5. Guide students to be inspired by the athletes through a video clip and some questions: (1) What is the most important thing for the athletes? (2) Why is taking part the most important thing for athletes? (3) What is the most important thing in our life / in learning/ in growing up? Step 3 Summary Have students summarize the relationship between the volunteers and the athletes during the Paralympics. Step 4 Extensive work Have students make a self-introduction to “China Youth Volunteers” to help the people with disabilities with the useful expressions that they have learned in this lesson. Step 5 Homework Need to do: Write a self-recommendation letter to China Youth Volunteers.
