I have heard of many wars which have started for the funniest reasons, but can you imagine two countries fighting because of boiled eggs?
Lilliputians thought Blefuscu was preparing a new attack very soon and they had more ships than we had here on Lilliput. I was worried, too. I was also sorry for the emperor and his people because they always treated me well. So I decided to go to the emperor and offer him my services.
“To thank you for your kindness, Emperor, I am ready to put my life in danger to protect Lilliput and all the Lilliputians. I will fight the Blefuscans for you!”
The emperor thanked me for my offer and understood that with my “great” help, Lilliput had a good chance of winning the war. So we immediately began to prepare a plan of action.
The island of Blefuscu is blocked off from Lilliput by a narrow channel of water. I planned to swim across and catch the Blefuscan fleet before they attacked Lilliput. I knew that the Blefuscans did not know anything about me. So I had the great advantage of surprise. When they saw me coming across the water for the first time, you can imagine their fear.
I swam across the channel with some ropes. When the enemy saw the Man Mountain they all screamed and jumped off their ships into the sea. And so as planned, I caught the Blefuscan fleet of ships. I tied their ships to my ropes and pulled the ships back to Lilliput.
I arrived back on Lilliput pulling the enemy’s ships behind me. My plan was a success! I immediately became a national hero and the emperor gave me the highest honour in the country: I became a “nardac” (which in the Lilliputian language means a very important person).

One rainy afternoon, Susan, Lucy and Edmund decided to play hide-and-seek (捉迷藏). Lucy hid into the room with the old wardrobe (衣橱). She didn’t plan to hide in it—last time she said there was a magic world called Narnia (纳尼亚), everyone laughed at her. But she couldn’t help wondering: Was Narnia just a dream?
Just as she reached the wardrobe, she heard footsteps in the hall. She quickly jumped inside and closed the door. It was Edmund. He saw Lucy go into the wardrobe. He opened the door, walked in, and closed it behind him. Inside were coats, darkness, and... no Lucy.
Edmund tried to open the door, but his hands felt only coats. “This isn’t funny,” he said, his voice sounding strange, like outdoors. And why was it so cold? Then he saw a weak light.
“Finally!” he thought the door had opened. But instead of the floor, he walked onto the crunchy (嘎吱作响的) snow. The ground was frozen, and the sky was pale blue. Edmund shook with cold.
“Lucy! I’m sorry I didn’t believe you. Narnia is real!” No answer. Just as he decided to go back, a sledge (雪橇) showed up and stopped in front of him. On the sledge sat a tall lady in white fur, with a golden crown and a long golden stick. Her face was white—not only pale, but white like snow or paper, except for her very red mouth. It was a beautiful face, but proud and stern (严厉的).
“And what, may I ask, are you?” said the Lady, looking hard at Edmund.
“I’m-I’m-my name’s Edmund,” said Edmund very nervously. He did not like the way she looked at him.

“I’m sorry, your Majesty. I didn’t know,” said Edmund.
“Not know the Queen of Narnia?” cried she. “Ha! You shall know us better from this time. But I repeat—what are you?”

In small villages, people often say hello to their neighbors in stores, on the streets, or outside their homes. But in cities, many people don’t greet their neighbors, even when they are standing in line at a supermarket. A recent study shows that greeting neighbors, especially up to six people a day, is really good for you.
The study has found that greeting others can make you happier. The magic number is six. When you greet up to six people, your happiness score goes up. After that, the score shows no further rise. The study was carried out last year and got replies from more than 4, 000 people. It tested people’s social happiness, physical happiness, community happiness and more. People who greeted six neighbors had a much higher happiness score than those who didn’t greet anyone.
You might think that saying hello is only about social happiness, but that’s not true. Regular (经常的) greetings also improve your physical and community happiness. ▲ If you feel your community is safe, it’s more possible for you to talk to people. Walking around your neighborhood can make you feel better physically.
Dan Witters, the leader of the study, said, “we don’t mean that you should know the person well. Just stop and talk to them. The more people you greet, the more chances you have to start a conversation.”
Remember, saying hello regularly is a good way to improve your own happiness.
31.How does the writer lead into the topic?
A.By telling a story. B.By explaining the reason.
C.By asking a question. D.By introducing different actions.

C.Different neighbors can greet you in different ways. D.The reason is they have nothing to do with each other.
34.What can we learn from Dan Witters’ words?
A.The more people you know, the happier you are.
B.Saying hello may help people start a conversation.
C.Nothing improves happiness more than conversations.
D.Knowing people is more important than greeting them.
35.What is the main idea of the passage?

In exchange for their help, they may get free or cheap accommodation (住宿), meals or classes.
Volunteer travel is not a new way to explore the world. It first became popular in the 1960s. 38 However, as time goes by, more and more volunteer trips are taking place in the volunteers’ home countries.

39 It’s also a great way to explore new cultures, meet new people and open our minds to the world around us. By working with local people on community projects, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the places you visit and learn some valuable life skills.
In a word, you can learn a lot from a volunteer vacation, and give back to society at the same time.

七、任务型阅读
阅读下面的短文,用英语回答问题,并将答案写在答题卡标有题号的横线上。
When I was in college, I took English literature (文学) classes. Every month, we read and discussed a classic novel. The books had different themes, but we always asked the same question: What did the writer want people to get from the story?
For the first few months, I kept wondering: If a writer wants to express a message, why not do it directly? Why did Ernest Hemingway, for example, write about an old man fighting a big fish? Didn’t he just want to tell people to keep going when things get hard?
The more I read, the more I understood why. Great writers don’t tell; they show. Nobody likes a lecture (讲座). Just think about how you feel when your parents tell you not to waste money on blind boxes. But everybody enjoys a good story. While discussing a story, we uncover its deeper meanings. A good story makes a book a classic.
After all these years of editing (编辑) work, I’ve become a better writer. In many of my articles, I chose to “show” rather than “tell.” For example, I didn’t directly tell you to exercise more. Instead, I shared an experience that pushed me to change some habits.
Classic novels have taught me many other lessons. I’ve picked up lots of useful words. I’ve also learned to write with my readers in mind. You can also read to write better. Walk into a great “castle” (城堡) and find out what makes it great. Over time, you’ll be ready to build a great “castle” of your own.
55.What question did the writer ask after finishing every classic novel?
56.What has the writer learned by reading classic novels? (Give at least 2 points.)

58.例文
Dear teachers and classmates,
The Yangtze River, our mother river, is facing serious challenges. Plastic pollution is everywhere on the river surface, and overfishing has broken the balance of its ecosystem. It’s time for us to take action to protect it.
First, let’s start with personal actions. We should reduce the use of plastic products, such as bringing reusable bags when shopping and refusing disposable tableware. Every small step can cut down plastic waste entering the river.
Second, we can organize campus activities. Planting trees along both sides of the Yangtze River can prevent soil erosion and provide a better living environment for aquatic organisms. We can also hold river-cleaning activities on weekends to collect rubbish by the river.
Third, we can use technology to help. With AI intelligent monitoring systems, we can track the situation of plastic pollution and illegal fishing in real time. This can help relevant departments take timely measures to stop harmful behaviors.
Remember: every little thing we do brings us closer to a green future. Come and join us today!
