Trees are useful to man in three important ways: they give him wood and other useful things, they give him cool places, and they help to stop drought and flood.
Unluckily, in many parts of the world, man has not found that the third of these points is the most important. Man wants to make money from trees, so he has cut them down in large numbers, only to find that without them he has lost the best friends he had. And also, he is usually too careless to plant and look after new trees. So the forests slowly disappear.
This does not only mean that man will have fewer trees. The results are even worse: for where there are trees, their roots break up soil-make the rain in-and also bind the soil, thus stopping it from being washed away easily; but where there are no trees, the rain falls on hard ground and flows away, causing floods and carrying away the rich top-soil. When all the top-soil is gone, nothing is left but useless desert.

Alan ate his breakfast and then ran into his room to get his shoes. The problem was that he could only find one of them. He looked under his bed, but all he could see were dirty pants. He moved some of his toys out of the way, but still couldn’t find his shoe. After he had checked everywhere in his room, he ran into the kitchen. “Mom, I can’t find my shoe. Will you wait while I look for it?” he asked.
His mom thought about how many times she’d told Alan to clean his room up. She said something to Alan’s grandma in a low voice. Then, she said to Alan,“You will have to stay home. Your dad and I will take your brother Alex to the Lego Land. Grandma will stay at home with you.”
“No! Please wait for me. I want to go to the Lego Land,” Alan cried. “I’m sorry, Alan. I’ve told you a dozen times to clean your room and you did not do it. You can’t find your shoe now. It’s your own fault for not cleaning your room. You will stay home.”
Alan ran into his bedroom, crying. His mom came to the door and said, “Alan, clean that room of yours before I get home. I’ve told Grandma not to give you any sweets until you make your room clean and tidy.” She went out with Alex and the brothers’ dad. After a minute, they drove away.

Florence Nightingale was born into a wealthy British family on May 12, 1820. She was named Florence after the place of her birth,Florence in Italy.(18) Working as a nurse, she saved the lives of many soldiers during the Crimean War. She was devoted to her profession and worked hard day and night. Florence Nightingale changed the way that hospitals cared for their patients. Before, hospitals were overcrowded and dirty places. Florence Nightingale changed all of this by making hospitals cleaner places. She also trained more nurses to help care for patients. She made sure patients were well looked after and had good food to eat, which saved many lives.(19) Florence met Queen Victoria, who awarded her the Royal Red Cross medal.(20) Every year on May 12,her birthday, nurses celebrate International Nurses Day. Florence opened a school of nursing and wrote a book called Notes on Nursing. King Edward VII gave Florence a special award called the Order of Merit in 1907.(20) She was the first woman to receive this award and she changed the way that women were seen in the workplace. Dear Li Hua,
I'm sorry to hear that you're feeling so stressed, but I'm glad you reached out for help. Here are some suggestions that might help you relax and improve your studies.
First, you should do more sport. It helps you reduce stress and makes your body stronger, which is good for learning. Second, spend time with friends. Go shopping or hang out with them. It's a great way to take your mind off pressure. As for your study, I suggest you make a study plan. Making a study plan helps you use time well. With a clear plan, you can learn better and reduce stress. On the other hand, I think you should go over lessons before doing homework. This will make your homework easier and save time. At last, you had better talk to your parents. Share your feelings with them. They can give you support and useful advice.
I hope these suggestions can be helpful to you. Good luck!

打扫房间:clean up the room/ clean the house
微笑:smile/beam with a smile
情绪类
玩得开心:have fun/ have a good time
骄傲地:proudly/with pride
【点睛】【高分句型1】
“If you keep your room clean, we may go to the Lego Land again next month,” his mom said.(运用了if引导让步状语从句。)
【高分句型2】
It took him two hours to clean up his room.(运用了it作形式主语,to do作真正的主语。)
