D Skilled fliers
Our wings are very strong. Each wing can move on its own or together as a pair. Like helicopters (直升机), we can hover (盘旋). To do so, we put our wings downwards to create whirlwind that goes across our wings. We can hover in the air for up to one minute in the same place.

The coconut is different from most other fruits because every part of it is useful. People have been using coconuts in many different ways. Here are some of them.
One exciting use of the coconut is as a kind of energy. Scientists are working on using coconuts for energy because they are cheap and clean. Coconut oil has already been made into fuel (燃料) . It can power cars, trucks, ships and many more.
Students at Baylor University find that coconut husks (外壳) can take in water very well. So mixing coconut husks with dry soil (土壤) helps the soil to hold onto more of the water. The students also find that coconut husks can take the place of plastic in some cases. If this is possible, it will help people use less plastic.
The husk of the coconut is a perfect package. It protects the coconut from harm. That’s why some countries allow people to send the coconut without any packaging. Each year, tourists post about 3,000 of these “coconut postcards”.
Coconuts grow naturally in over 80 countries of the world. They require only sun and proper rain. No special care is needed. Every year, more than 61 million tons of coconuts are produced. It is not surprising, then, that people want to find so many uses for the coconut.

A British woman used an ancient Chinese invention to help her son deal with a modern problem.
Dr. Rashmi Mantri grew up in India. She was taught how to use an abacus (算盘) to solve math problems when she was a little girl. After noticing her son Dhruv had great difficulty with math, she started employing the same ancient Chinese tool to help him after school.
In just six days, Dhruv started to show great interest in the abacus. He enjoyed learning on it because it was like a game. He said, “The abacus has wooden beads that slide (滑动) on rods. By moving the beads up and down, I can easily add or subtract (减去) numbers.” He started to learn fast and would go on to become an excellent student in math. Surprised by the progress teachers asked Dhruv to perform with the abacus at a school meeting, where some parents even came to ask for advice on using it to help their kids.
Known as the Fifth Invention of Ancient China, the Chinese abacus helped people solve all kinds of math problems in ancient China and is still used today. Some primary schools in China have opened abacus classes. People find that using an abacus can also improve thinking and practical abilities. In 2013, the Chinese abacus was officially listed as an intangible cultural heritage of human beings (人类非物质文化遗产).
“The abacus becomes a playing tool for younger children. It feels like a game. I think the success comes because children can touch and feel an abacus and picture it in their mind.” said Dr. Mantri.

Anxiety (焦虑) means feeling nervous, worried or fearful. When you think of starting a new project or going into a group situation with people you don’t know, do you feel butterflies in your stomach? Do you come up with lots of reasons to avoid something new like joining a club or a volunteer organization? If these happen, it shows that you are probably anxious. In fact, the more you avoid challenges, the stronger your anxiety will be, which makes you less confident, but you can control anxiety by taking action. Here are some suggestions. 1. Don’t wait for your anxiety to go down
Your anxiety wont go down on its own. However, when you take action towards your goals (目标) instead of considering what anxiety you have, you will build self-confidence little by little and your anxiety will be weaker. 2. Set personal suitable goals
Set goals that fit you, not others. We all have different qualities. Not everyone can be lawyers, have hundreds of friends. Whatever you want, just think what is the simplest thing you can do to get started. For example, if you want to exercise, start with “walk for 15 minutes every day” instead of “run 5 kilometers daily”. Small success will encourage you to try harder tasks later. 3. Just start, though you are not sure
You don’t need to have all the answers before starting. Trust that things will get better if you just take the first step. The more you take action, the more you trust the process. When I write a blog (博客), I don’t always know what to say at first. But when I start typing honestly, ideas come naturally, and anxiety will reduce slowly.”

A teenager with autism swims toward victory
Chen Xingrong won five medals, including a gold, at the 11th National Games for Persons with Disabilities and the 8th National Special Olympics Games.
Born in Hainan Province, Chen Xingrong could not say a word until he was 2 years old. When Chen Xingrong was found autistic (自闭的), his parents were worried. In 2012, his father learned that swimming could help people with autism, so he spent months learning how to swim by watching videos and reading books. When Chen Xingrong was 5 years old, he began to teach him how to swim. At the very beginning, he spent three months teaching his son, but all his efforts failed. To his surprise, after another three months, he discovered that his son had developed the ability to control his breath under water, which greatly increased his confidence, and swimming soon became a key activity of the family. His father planned all his exercises for him at first, but then it was all up to him. He decided how many exercises he wanted to do, and his parents respected his choices. It was a process of self-management. With his father’s help as well as his good self-management and perseverance, he succeeded in winning many medals in the swimming competitions.
As well as swimming, learning basic life skills is also an important part of life for a teenager with autism. His father hopes that his son can live well on his own when he and his wife grow old. To help the public to know more about autistic people so as to reduce misunderstanding, he once organized about 500 people to watch an autism-themed film.
Thanks to his father’s endless efforts, Chen Xingrong has learned to buy food in the market in their neighborhood. He also does voluntary jobs at supermarkets and fast-food restaurants, such as arranging shelves and cleaning dining tables. “He is good at skillfully arranging things. He is part of the community, and I hope he will live a wonderful life in the future,” his father says proudly.

“go through the darkest moments”意思是“度过最艰难的时刻”。put up(忍耐/搭建)、look for(寻找)不符合搭配。

Dear Mr. Yang,
I’m excited to hear that our school will hold the activity “Telling Chinese Stories in English”. I really want to take part in it.
It’s my great honor to introduce myself. I’m a boy from Class One, Grade Nine. My name is Li Hua and I’m 15 years old. I’m an outgoing boy. I have many hobbies, especially reading. I have read a lot of classics on Chinese history, so I’m familiar with Chinese history and culture.
I want to take part in the activity because it is very meaningful. I can build up my culture confidence through the activity. Besides, I will feel proud that the world will know more about China with my efforts.
Through this activity, I hope I can be more confident in myself. Meanwhile, I can improve my spoken English.
I expect that you can give me this chance to show myself and I’m looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
