It was a cold winter evening in December, the kind where frost painted the windows and the fireplace was too weak to keep the room warm. Dad’s face changed—first surprise, then hope, and finally relief. He hugged Lily tightly. “Thank you,” he whispered, “for not giving up on me.”
Years later, whenever dad feels unsure about sending his work, he remembers Lily’s words, 5 him to try. Now, I’ve started writing too—short stories in notebooks, poems on paper. When I doubt myself, dad places a hand on my shoulder and says, “Just send it. What matters is having the 6 to try.”

Today I stood on the beam, trying to do a cartwheel. I looked down at my coach, Rita, who prepared to catch me if I failed. I took a breath but my knees were shaking. “Well, I can’t do it! Someday I’ll do the beam. But not today.” I 2 down and went away.
At the following class, Rita took out a roll of 3 . She used it to make two lines the width of the balance beam on the mat. “Maisie, I want you to practice your balance-beam routine within the lines of the tape.” Well, that’s easy enough. All I had to do was to stay inside the lines. I finished it 4 . “Great! You never went outside the lines,” Rita said. “Do you want to have a try on the balance beam?” I gave her a weak smile and shook my head.
“Can you teach me how to swim?” Rita said suddenly. I was confused, and then she told me that she couldn’t swim because she was afraid of water. Therefore, I 5 .
“Watch.” I jumped into the pool and began to swim. Rita was obviously afraid and hesitated to jump. I 6 her and finally Rita took a deep breath and jumped into the water. She succeeded! My coach was brave enough to jump into the water, and I couldn’t help thinking of myself. So I told Rita, “Maybe my ‘someday’ should be today.”
I got up on the balance beam, closing my eyes and imagining I was on the mat. Then I started the cartwheel. I 7 it! Seeing that, Rita was excited to jump up and down, clapping and shouting, “You were so 8 !”
“I wasn’t,” I shook my head. “I was super scared up there.”
“That makes you great! You were afraid and did it anyway.”
I smiled. “I guess you’re right. My someday finally comes.”

Ten years ago, I was a non-athletic kindergarten teacher. One day, my thirteen-year-old son, Ryan, rushed into the house and shouted, “Mom, you should join our charity — 1 race.” As he told me the details (细节), I laughed out loud. “What makes you think I could finish a twenty-mile bike race?” I asked. Ryan looked me straight in the eyes, “I know you can do it.” I almost laughed again, but he was 2 . I promised to think about it.
The next day in my class, the kids were learning to sing a song. “Let’s do it faster. I know you can do it!” I said. There it was again: “I know you can do it.” I asked the kids what that meant. “When I don’t know if I can do something, I just need someone to 3 I can do it,” Diego answered. I agreed that it makes all the difference. So I decided to take part in the race.
After I had trained for several weeks, the race day finally came. We started on a hill. As we began winding (蜿蜒前行) down, I 4 speed and nearly lost control, but managed to stay upright. Finally, I was down on flat land, and I was completely worn out. Now, every mile became a challenge. My legs felt like heavy stones, but my son’s words, “I know you can do it” kept 5 in my head.
Mile after mile, I rode on and passed several riders until only Ryan was ahead. A sense of 6 washed over me. When Ryan stopped for water, I caught up with him. We basically stayed together for the rest of the miles. I wished we could both cross the finish line side by side. But the truth is, I suddenly became very competitive and sped ahead, leaving Ryan behind. I 7 !

It was a cold winter evening in December, the kind where frost painted the windows and the fireplace was too weak to keep the room warm. I was twelve at the time, and my father, a quiet man who loved writing, had worked on his book for months. His study was messy, filled with coffee cups and paper—proof of his hard work. That evening, the mailman brought a thick envelope. My younger sister Lily, always eager to check the mail, grabbed it and 1 it to dad with excitement.
Dad looked at the sender’s name—a famous publishing company—and sighed. Without saying anything, he dropped the envelope onto a shelf near his desk.
“Dad, won’t you open it?” Lily asked, sounding confused.
“It’s probably just another 2 ,” he replied quietly, staring at his computer screen. His voice was calm, but I saw his hands shake slightly.
The room fell into a heavy 3 , except for the sound of typing. Lily, however, didn’t give up. She pulled a chair to the shelf, climbed up, and grabbed the envelope. With her small hands, she 4 it open. “Look! It’s from the publisher!” she shouted, holding the letter high.
Dad stopped typing. Slowly, he took the letter and read, “We are happy to tell you that your book has been chosen for publication…” His voice broke as he held the paper tightly.
Lily laughed and jumped around. “I knew they’d like it!” Her eyes shone with pride, as if she’d uncovered a hidden treasure.
Last month, I received my first refusal letter. For a moment, my heart 7 . But Lily ran into my room, grabbed the letter, and said, “Next time, they’ll say yes! Want to bet a cookie? ” Her smile made me laugh.

When I moved to America in the 7th grade, I did not speak any English. I had no choice but to keep working hard. Although I made 1 when I reached the 9th grade, people still found it difficult to understand me because of my accent.
One day, at a party, I was invited to play a guessing game. When it was my turn, I tried to 2 the object that I had in mind. Suddenly someone said with a laugh, “What did she say?” I felt 3 . Out of kindness, a girl gently advised me to repeat it, but I got stuck on the word “purple”. I couldn’t 4 it. This time, everyone laughed while I was trying hard to get the word out of me.
This experience had its own influence on me. When opportunities were opened up for the summer program I had been waiting for, I 5 to attend the class. Luckily, I got tons of encouragement from people around me. So I decided to have a try.
At the interview, the other students in my group spoke professionally and very naturally, but I didn’t speak that much. I knew that I could hardly be understood because of my accent. Besides, when I was 6 , it would be even more difficult for me to pronounce words clearly. After the interview, I stayed, said sorry and explained to the teachers. I didn’t want them to think I wasn’t interested or I was being unfriendly. But they appreciated that I 7 myself. “It’s OK. You don’t have to say sorry. Your accent does not make you less than others,” said one of the teachers.
Surprisingly, I was accepted into the program. Imagine how I felt!
Up to now, I still feel lucky that I took that step. It is a 8 that I have changed. I did not let my accent stop me. I’m sure I will continue to feel anxious about speaking English with strangers. But that’s OK. It will not stop me from trying to be better.

Many people say that durian (榴莲) is delicious, but you have probably never seen a durian-scented (榴莲味的) candle. That’s because the fruit smells. And that is why some people 1 it.
But Vincent Gomes from the University of Sydney doesn’t think so. Gomes is not a food lover, but he’s now very interested in durian. The researcher said the fruit could one day completely change our 2 .
In Gomes’ eyes, durian is more than just a fruit. He and his colleagues have 2 something amazing about it. They found that durian is a natural super-capacitor (超级电容器).
Super-capacitors, just like batteries, are used to store 3 . However, they hold a few advantages over the batteries we use today. They can store a much larger amount of electricity. They can be recharged much more quickly. And most 4 , they have a much longer life. The lithium-ion (锂离子) batteries in our smartphones depend on chemicals to produce electricity. When the chemicals are used up, the batteries become harmful waste. This has caused serious pollution problems. Scientists have been trying to develop better batteries for years.
Although super-capacitors have many advantages, they are not yet widely used. The traditional methods used to make them are 5 while durian is quite cheap. It has given scientists hope.
Gomes and his colleagues have found a way to turn durian cores (果核) into super-capacitors. But they still have many technical problems to 6 .
Perhaps by the end of this decade, durian batteries will have hit the market. Let’s just hope they won’t smell too bad—we’ll need to use them in many 7 , from our cars to our phones!
