5 to leave empty-handed, we made a final attempt on the last day. However, contradictory directions from passers-by only deepened our 6 . As dusk fell, shopkeepers were packing up, streets quieting, and hope fading. Wet from another shower and with a torn map, we felt even more 7 .
Then, a blind turn led us to a narrow street where a store drew our attention. My sister stopped to 8 the map, and I glanced at the signs — “That’s it” I 9 .
The owner looked up, smiled, and 10 us in. Inside, floor-to-ceiling bookshelves lined the walls. As I ran my fingers along the bookshelves, a hardcover caught my eye. Just as I 11 for it, another hand brushed against the cover. “You like it too?” a woman smiled. As the bookstore’s regular, she instantly 12 with me and I told her our 13 search. The owner, overhearing our story, stepped over and 14 us with two copies of the book, each signed by the author. “For those truly appreciating it,” he said. Detours didn’t ruin our trip; instead, they led us to the priceless 15 — the places and the people we are meant to meet.

I 5 wrote down those two words in my notebook.
Tinker time, I think, is what we do when writing, or what we should do. I finish a short story. I leave it until the next day and 6 it again to edit and do some 7 . That’s the main part over with.
The following day I take another look at the 8 . I check all my punctuation and spellings. I read each sentence 9 , and out loud. Reading aloud makes such a difference. It’s easier to spot 10 that way.
A few days later I 11 the story and I guess this is when I spend some tinker time on it. It seems fully done but, if I tinker a little more, could I 12 it? This is when I might decide a word could be 13 . For instance, is fear the word I want or would terror be more powerful? 14 , there is nearly always a little something that can be improved on, just like those final tiny touches in the 15 .
I shall leave this now and come back in a few days to spend some tinker time on it.

Passage 1
(2025·广东省深圳市福田区红岭中学·二模)
When I first set foot on Mexican soil, I spoke Spanish well. So when I asked a local ice-cream seller for an ice-cream, and he said “ahorita,” which directly translates to “right now”, I took him at his word, believing that its arrival was 1 .
I sat near his shop and waited. Half an hour passed and still no ice-cream arrived, so I asked again about it, “ahorita,” he told me again. His face was a mix of 2 and maybe even embarrassment.
I was 3 . Waiting longer wasn’t pleasant, but I felt it was impolite to walk away, especially if the ice-cream was now being 4 just for me. But finally, after waiting too long, I made a (an) 5 for nearest bus to take me home. As I left, I 6 at my wrist and shrugged to the ice-cream seller. 7 I couldn’t wait any longer and it really wasn’t my fault. His face was, once again, one of the total confusion.
This experience 8 from my memory until years later when I came back to live in Mexico. I discovered that understanding “ahorita” took not a fluency in the language, but rather a(n) 9 in the culture. When someone from Mexico says “ahorita,” it should almost never be taken 10 ; its meaning changes greatly with 11 . As a linguist told me, “Ahorita could mean tomorrow, in an hour, within five years or never.” It is even used as a polite way of saying “no, thanks” when 12 an offer.
Difficulty in explaining what I have come to call “Ahorita Time” is a 13 of different cultural understandings of time. Since I moved to Mexico, my attitude towards time has changed dramatically. I don’t worry so much about being late; I am generally still on time for 14 , but when I’m not, I don’t feel 15 . Ironically, it would seem that “Ahorita Time,” has actually allowed me to live far more in the “right now” than I ever did before.

I knew exercise is good for health — who doesn’t? But 1 were easier. Running bored me, biking sounded risky, and the gym seemed too much to handle. Each offered me a reason to 2 it, so I did.
When I worked in Kenya, I came to realize that people there don’t “ 3 ” the way I had thought. Instead, they move — with a clear 4 in mind. They move to reach a destination. They move to hunt and to tend crops. There is no such thing as a 5 , but they are working out 24-7. Maybe I could take 6 from these people and add meaning to my exercising. So, I launched my 7 program: “chicken-cising,” with 15 baby chicks and a book on 8 backyard chickens.
It turned out that caring for the flightless birds was quite 9 — a full-body workout involving bending, squatting (深蹲), weightlifting and running around. One weekend, my e-watch 10 as many as 145 squats and 10,506 steps!

On a solo trip to Mexico City several years ago, I found a perfect souvenir at a local market: a clay statue of a woman with long, flowing hair. Back home, I couldn’t wait to 1 the piece on my shelf. I carefully unwrapped her, only to discover a(n) 2 surprise. During the long 3 , her beautiful hair had completely broken off, leaving her head in two pieces. I was extremely sad.

That philosophy 6 me deeply. I realized I didn’t need to hide the damage; I needed to 7 the repair. Driven by this new passion, I decided to take my broken statue to Jingdezhen. There, I mended broken bowls under the 8 of a local master.
