The sport I have stuck with and continue to enjoy is table tennis, which has provided me with valuable life lessons.
Table tennis is probably one of the most interesting sports around the world—a game where players are mostly on their own. No one can help them and only their own skills and mindset can help them win the game. Because it is such a fast sport in a small environment, every wrong movement results in an error. So your mind has to be very clear.
I started playing table tennis when I was 9 years old, surrounded by many players of my age. About three years later, I surpassed some of these players who were better than me at first but quit the sport. Then, at the age of 15, I made the jump to the seniors and rose to the top among players in my region. Even now, I am still one of the best players in my region, surpassing players who received more support in table tennis than I did. And this is how it works in life as well. Continuous effort, courage, and persistence (坚持) lead to success, differentiating those with great success from those who stay average.
My biggest progress was made when I jumped to the seniors. Often challenged by stronger opponents (对手), I got used to being out of my comfort zone. Such experiences improved my skills much faster. At that time, my environment, which included stronger training partners, pushed me to grow. This is also true of making progress in other areas of your life. Your surroundings, and the people around you, shape you continuously. So, choose them wisely.
56. According to Paragraph 2, a table tennis player needs to _____.
A. slow down to avoid making mistakes
B. expect support from team members
C. rely heavily on physical strength
D. keep a high level of mental focus
57. What enabled the author to surpass those who were once better than him?
A. He showed much more talent in the sport.
B. He got more support from his environment.
C. He continued to play when others gave up.
D. He started playing at a much younger age.
58. What does the author mean by saying “I got used to being out of my comfort zone” in Paragraph 4?
A. He started playing the sport in a new city.
B. He had to adapt to playing against much stronger rivals.
C. He began to feel physically uncomfortable during training.
D. He felt tired of his familiar training environment.
59. What advice does the author give for making progress in life?
A. Choose your environment and companions wisely.
B. Stick to a familiar and comfortable training routine.
C. Compete mostly with people of your own age.
D. Rely entirely on your own skills and mindset.
60. What is the best title for the text?
A. What Table Tennis Has Taught Me
B. My Journey to Becoming a Champion
C. How to Survive in Competitions
D. The Secrets to Winning a Match
C
The city of Derby in England is building a special kind of bus stop. These bus stops have roofs covered with local plants and flowers to attract pollinators (insects like bees that help plants grow). “Each roof will have a mix of wildflowers. They are perfect homes and food for many insects, including bees and butterflies,” the city explained. These “living roofs” are very important because the number of these insects has been falling quickly lately.
Pollinators are necessary for the survival of plants and our food. According to experts, about 75% of the world’s flowers and 35% of our crops need these insects to produce seeds and fruit. In fact, one out of every three bites of food we eat depends on them. However, many pollinators are dying because they are losing their homes, getting sick, or facing the problems of pollution and climate change.
These green bus stops do more than just help insects; they also bring great benefits to people living in the city. The plants help cool down the air. Usually, cities with many people and few plants are much hotter than the countryside. This is called the “urban heat island effect.” As global temperatures rise, having more plants across a city is a clever way to keep the city cool and protect us from extreme weather.
The city also focuses on being “green” in other ways. These bus stops are made of recycled materials. When they become too old, the parts can be recycled again. Even the digital screens at the stops are 50% more energy-efficient than old models. They are completely powered by renewable electricity, such as wind or solar power.
Derby is not the only place in the U.K. using this idea. This is part of a much larger project. The goal is to create at least 1,000 bee-friendly bus stops across the country to protect nature and improve city life.
61. What is special about the new bus stops in Derby?
A. Their roofs provide a safe home for some insects.
B. They grow local crops to produce food for the birds.
C. Their screens show videos about protecting nature.
D. They are mainly designed to beautify city streets.
62. Why are many pollinators dying according to the text?
A. They are affected by the urban heat island effect.
B. They fail to get enough food from the local crops.
C. They suffer from lost homes and serious pollution.
D. They struggle to compete with the flowers and plants.
63. How do the green bus stops directly help people living in the city?
A. By providing renewable energy for local families.
B. By producing extra crops and fruits for citizens.
C. By preventing people from being bitten by insects.
D. By helping to lower the temperatures of the city.
64. Why does the author mention the digital screens in Paragraph 4?
A. To prove the high value of renewable electricity.
B. To present the city’s further eco-friendly steps.
C. To compare them with traditional screen versions.
D. To encourage the public to use more solar energy.
65. What is the text mainly about?
A. Creative ways for cities to fight climate change.
B. National plans to build 1,000 new stops in Derby.
C. Primary reasons for the quick decline of insects.
D. Green bus stop projects and their major benefits.
第Ⅱ卷(共35分)
第四部分:写作(共两节,满分35分)
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
I still remember the moment when I became a shy girl and developed a profound fear of public speaking. In high school, I would choose to be absent on days when I knew I had to present projects to the class. My eyes would water when I had to speak in front of my classmates, my voice would tremble, and so would my legs.
Now, at the age of 22, a graduate of Florida State University, I am very clear on my own advantage, much of which goes to my so-called language “barrier” and struggle with “broken” English. During my years of learning English, my mom and I would sit down together to do my homework. When I was tired of studying, my mom would softly say, “Let’s study another half hour, because when you learn, I learn too.” Her words kept me going. We would sit there at the table laughing as we were spelling words aloud to each other. I began to appreciate a certain joy and achievement of studying.
Many would argue that my inability to speak English in my childhood was a weakness. In fact, it turned out to be one of my greatest strengths. I paid close attention to how people spoke and pronounced words. The fact that I am not a native English speaker has made me more empathetic (共情的) and has helped me truly understand why diversity of thought is such a strength in the workplace, and, has made me a far more effective communicator. That one-time shy, silent little girl actually went for and got a job that now requires me to regularly stand in front of 40 state officers and read proposed laws (提案) in English.
To students who may be struggling with their inability, I advise you to change your focus, embrace the opportunity in your challenge and consider how you can draw energy from your weakness to become a stronger student. Don’t accept the belief that you are disadvantaged.
66. Why did the author sometimes miss classes in high school? (No more than 10 words)
67. What does the underlined word “tremble” in Para. 1 probably mean? (1 word)
68. What did the author and her mother usually do while studying English together? (No more than 10 words)
69. How does the author view her language “barrier” now? (No more than 10 words)
70. How does the author’s story inspire you? Please explain in your own words. (No more than 20 words)
第二节:书面表达(满分25分)

A Quote That Moves Me Forward
Hello, everyone. Today, I’d like to share a quote that has become a guiding star in my life. The quote is, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step” by Lao Zi. To me, it means that no matter how difficult a goal seems, the most important thing is to take the first step and start doing it.
This quote helped me greatly last year when I joined the school English debate club. Initially, I was terrified of speaking in public and felt I could never match the senior members. I almost quit. However, remembering this quote, I decided to focus on small steps. I started by practicing speaking to a mirror for just five minutes a day, and then slowly began to share my ideas in small group discussions. Step by step, my English improved, and eventually, I became one of the best debaters in our club.
This quote is of great significance to me. It reminds me not to be frightened by huge challenges. As long as we take action, even the smallest step can lead to great success.
Thank you for listening.
