Under the tree sat an old man with a wooden pipe.
An old man sat under the tree.
Never before had the city seen such a grand celebration.
The city had never before seen such a grand celebration.
Had I known the truth earlier, I would have acted differently.
If I had known the truth earlier...
4. as/though
Tired as he was, he continued to work late into the night.
Although he was tired, he continued...
Nowhere in nature is the principle of energy conservation more beautifully demonstrated than in the process of photosynthesis, where plants convert sunlight into chemical energy.
The principle of energy conservation is nowhere more beautifully demonstrated than...
Nowhere... is the principle... demonstrated...
比较结构: more... than... (比……更……)
定语从句: where plants convert sunlight...
On the horizon stood a solitary figure, watching the sunset.
(比 A solitary figure stood on the horizon...
Not only does this technology save time, but it also reduces costs.
Never have we faced such a critical moment in history.
Part 1
The wind swept across the Irish coast as Grandfather bent to examine Caper’s front hooves (蹄). The little horse stepped back and let out a painful sound. “They are burning and swollen (肿胀的),” said Grandfather with a heavy heart. “I think he has a mild case of sickness. Horses will eat themselves sick any chance they get. And the sickness has gone straight to this one’s hooves.”
“When will he feel better?” asked Aislinn worriedly. Caper was not just their pet — he carried the load of fish to the market every week. Without him, they could not take the fish to the market. Without selling the fish, they would not get their rent paid.
Grandfather removed half of the grain from Caper’s feed. He then explained that Caper would soon be right as rain if they cut back on his diet and let him rest properly. The most important thing now, he added, was to bring the heat down and reduce the swelling. “Don’t worry about the fish, child. The sea has always been kind to us.” Grandfather smiled at Aislinn and urged her to get some sleep.
Aislinn lay in bed, but sleep would not come. She opened her window. The sliver moon had risen above the sea. Aislinn wondered how Grandfather could sell the fish he’d worked so hard to catch. She wished they had enough money for the rent. But above all, Aislinn wished Caper’s hooves would stop hurting. Damp wind filled the room as she watched the cold waves crash on the beach. Aislinn gradually remembered when she had got a swollen ankle, Grandfather had told her to keep ice on it, and the swelling had gone down.
If cold could reduce the heat and swelling in her ankle, perhaps it could ease Caper’s pain as well! There was ice in the fish crate (箱子) to keep the fish fresh, and the cold sea lay only a short walk away, with its waves rolling on and on toward the shore.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1: Aislinn pulled on her sweater and boots and hurried down the hallway.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: The next morning, Aislinn woke beside the horse.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1: Aislinn pulled on her sweater and boots and hurried down the hallway.
Paragraph 2: The next morning, Aislinn woke beside the horse.
She ran to the seashore and found some ice in the crate.
Down to the seashore rushed Aislinn, only to find that the ice in the crate had melted into water. (Aislinn
解析: 将 "Down to the seashore" 提前,配合 "rushed Aislinn",生动地描绘了她急切奔跑的动作。
Never / Seldom / Not only / Not until / Hardly...when...
She will not give up. She will try her best.
Never will she give up before the difficulties.
解析: "Never" 开头引起部分倒装,比 "She will never give up" 语气更强,更能体现人物的坚毅。
(Scarcely/Hardly...when...)
As soon as she applied the ice water, Caper let out a sigh.
Hardly had she applied the ice water to his hooves when Caper let out a long sigh of relief.
Paragraph 1:
Aislinn pulled on her sweater and boots and hurried down the hallway. Down to the cold beach rushed the determined girl, clutching the empty crate. However, Not only was the ice completely melted, but also the crate was empty. Seeing the waves rolling, an idea flashed across her mind: the seawater itself was cold enough! Into the freezing waves waded Aislinn, ignoring the biting chill, and soaked her clothes and the crate thoroughly. Back at the stable, she carefully wrapped Caper’s hooves with the wet cloth.
Paragraph 2:
The next morning, Aislinn woke beside the horse. Never had she seen Caper look so peaceful; his breathing was steady, and the terrible swelling had gone down significantly. Hardly had Aislinn touched his hooves when Caper nuzzled her gently, his eyes full of gratitude. Grandfather arrived, astonished by the miracle. "You’ve saved him, child," he whispered. Aislinn smiled, knowing that with love and wisdom, they would face the market again.
1.Down to the cold beach rushed the determined girl...

Listening to Grandma’s Childhood Stories
On a warm summer evening, the gentle wind carried the sweet scent of jasmine (茉莉花). I sat beside Grandma on the old wooden balcony, holding her warm, wrinkled hand, as the setting sun cast a golden glow over us. The old wooden swing swayed slowly. “Child, let me tell you about my childhood,” Grandma began, her voice soft with tender memories, patting my back gently.
She grew up in a small village with no fancy tools or modern entertainment. Every morning, she woke up early to help her parents tend the vegetable garden behind their house, growing tomatoes, cucumbers and green beans. Though tiring, it was rewarding to watch the young plants grow and bear fruit. Her father taught her how to tell when each vegetable was ready, and she would run back proudly with her small basket. In her free time, she played hide-and-seek with her brothers and sisters, often hiding in the hayloft (干草棚) of the farm building, where soft hay made a comfortable shelter. Once, she fell asleep there, waking only to her mother’s worried calls at dusk.
In winter, when snow covered the ground, they made sliding boards from old wooden boards and raced down the nearby hill, laughing excitedly. Her cheeks would burn red from the cold, but her heart felt warm. Her school was a small building at the village entrance, with all grades studying together under a kind teacher. She walked two miles each way, carrying her books in a cloth bag made by her mother, never missing a day. During festivals, the whole village gathered to share home-cooked dishes, music and laughter. The women exchanged cooking methods while the men played folk songs, and children danced until stars appeared. As Grandma finished, I leaned against her, feeling warm and grateful. These stories were our family’s precious legacy (传承), passing down love and courage. I thanked her softly, and Grandma kissed my forehead, saying they would guide me to a warmer world.

A Wife Risks Her Life
On a misty February morning in a small town in southern India, Ramesan Nair, a 64-year-old retired officer, was picking black peppers with his wife Padmam and relatives. He climbed a tree near the family well to reach the peppers.
Suddenly, a sharp cracking sound broke the morning silence. The branch beneath Ramesan broke. He lost his balance and fell directly into the 40-foot well below, striking his head and back against the wall on the way down.
His wife Padmam heard the crash, then the terrifying splash (落水声) . She rushed to the well and looked down into the darkness. She called his name. His faint voice echoed back — he was all right.
She found a plastic rope and lowered it for him to climb. For a few seconds, she waited for a response. Then he cried out, “I can’t. I’m too weak, and my leg is hurt.”
Padmam went into action quickly. She grabbed the thick rope attached to the well’s pulley system Tying one end to a nearby tree, she told her relative to call the fire department. After tying the other end around her waist, she climbed onto the edge of the well and lowered herself down.
The wall of the well was slippery. The rope cut into her hands, leaving her palms bloody. Halfway down, she lost her hold and fell onto a narrow platform inside the well. The fall knocked the breath out of her. Catching her breath, she looked down, hoping to catch sight of her husband — but saw only water.
With no time to think, she jumped into the water.
The waist-high water was cold. Fish, frogs and small snakes swam around her as she searched with her hands in the dark. Finally, her hand touched her husband’s shoulder. He was unconscious, his face just below the water.

My three-year-old brother Cody, and I, aged six, were in the back seat when the snowstorm started. Fat clumps (簇) of white, like a million cotton balls, landed on our car and stuck there. Unlike our usual chatty trips, the car was quiet. Cody had a high fever at Grandma’s house that afternoon. Grandma lived in a remote village with no easy medical help, so we had to rush back to the city to see a doctor. In the hour since we’d left Grandma’s house, the weather was worse.
“It’s getting harder to see anything,” Dad whispered to Mom.
Mom nodded, glancing back at Cody worriedly. “The forecast mentioned snow showers, but this looks more serious.”
I pressed my face against the cold window. A car followed us closely behind. On the passenger seat was a medical kit with a faint white cross. Doctors often use such bags for home visits, but I didn’t know the driver was a doctor then.
Suddenly, our car slid to the side. My heart pounded. Dad managed to straighten the wheel and stay on the road. “We need to drive off and wait out this storm. Cody will get worse in this condition. But I can barely see the road, let alone an exit,” Dad said.
“Dad, a sign!” I shouted. High in the sky, the sign of a restaurant blinked (闪烁): EAT HERE.
“Are you sure, Kenny?” Dad asked and slowly pulled over to check.
Then, through the thick snow, I saw the lights of that car coming up behind us. It slowed down and stopped aside ours. Its window rolled down. “Need help?” The driver leaned out and asked.
“Do you know how to get there?” Dad pointed to the sign and said urgently.

Love is the Best Magic
As a children’s book author, I have always painted wonderful fantasies with words for my seven-year-old daughter, Lily. My favorite creation was Pip, a tiny fairy living safely inside our living room walls. I whispered to her that Pip built beautiful castles out of our lost colorful buttons, slept comfortably in an empty matchbox, and used shiny candy wrappers as magic carpets. Every night before bed, Lily would lovingly leave a tiny cup of water by the baseboard. And every morning, her eyes would light up with wonder when she found it empty — a secret task I performed while she slept.
Pip’s adventures in the wall always mirrored Lily’s real life, acting as a gentle shield against her childhood fears. When a fierce thunderstorm terrified Lily, I told her Pip was bravely organizing a fairy band to play drums inside the wall, turning the scary thunder into a grand concert. I wove these evolving stories with deep love, hoping to protect her pure heart. To me, magic was just another language for love.
Recently, however, Lily’s school started a “Science of Everyday Life” month. Her teacher, Mr. Davis, began teaching the class how the real world functions. One week, Lily came home excitedly explaining how gravity keeps our feet on the ground. Another week, she learned how electricity travels safely through wires to light up our bulbs. She asked if the electricity would accidentally shock Pip. I had to quickly invent a story that Pip wore special rubber boots.
Watching her eagerly combine logical facts with my fairy tales, a quiet worry began to bother me. I knew it was only a matter of time before the science class covered the actual internal structures of houses. Magic is undeniably beautiful, but it is not real. Was I crossing the fine line between magic and lying? Every morning as I watched her board the school bus, my heart sank. I realized the beautiful bubble I had blown for her was bound to be mercilessly popped by scientific facts. I just didn’t know when the storm would arrive.

My father became my only guardian after my mother passed away. Chatting with others helped ease his deep sadness. Every morning, he would go to his beloved local donut (甜甜圈) shop, where he always started warm conversations with the people there. When we left, along with the bear claw pastry in a small box, there was always a chocolate-covered donut prepared just for me. On the ride in Dad’s truck, my little task was to hold Dad’s coffee between my knees, to stop it from spilling on the way.
As time went by and I grew up, that donut shop became a special place for us to celebrate all kinds of my achievements. Even if I didn’t win or get a ranking, Dad would still take me there. Finally, I grew into an adult and moved out of Dad’s house. On my wedding day, Dad handed me a small gift box. Inside it was a tiny chocolate-covered donut. My heart was deeply moved, melting faster than the chocolate frosting would in a hot oven.
In October 1989, Dad was told he had incurable cancer. We lived an ocean apart, so our visits were very rare. A year later, I was hurt in an attack, and had to receive three back surgeries in hospital. Dad’s cancer had developed so badly that his body could barely support him. But he ignored the doctor’s orders, and flew to the hospital to comfort me. His weak body leaned over my chest, his thin arms hugging me tightly, saying how much he wished he could take my place.
As the nurses prepared me for surgery, I saw Dad’s face cloud over with worry. They wheeled me out of the room and into the operating room. When I woke up, I was back in my hospital room, lying in bed alone. There was nobody around. As I reached for the telephone to call Dad, I saw a paper plate on the bedside table, holding a chocolate-covered donut.

1.
I decided to record Grandma’s stories to keep them forever. The next day, I brought a small recorder to Grandma’s house, explaining my wish to save her precious memories. She smiled warmly and agreed, her eyes sparkling with joy. As she told her stories again, I listened carefully and pressed the record button, capturing every soft tone of her voice. I also asked her to share more details about her childhood friends and daily life, making the stories more vivid. It felt like I was walking alongside her in that small village, experiencing her simple happiness.
On Grandma’s birthday, I gave her a notebook with the recorded stories. I printed the stories and pasted some old photos of Grandma’s childhood in the book, making it a special gift. When she opened it, tears filled her eyes. We sat together, listening to the recorded stories and talking about the good old days. Later, I shared the book with my younger cousins, letting them also know our family’s history. Grandma’s stories, once just memories, became a treasure that our whole family would cherish forever.

I am a doctor.” Then he went out and returned with his medical kit.
Immediately, the driver opened his medical kit and checked Cody. He took Cody’s temperature, checked his chest and looked at his throat with a flashlight. The whole process witnessed his professional and considerate care for my sick brother. Finally, he gave Cody some medicine and said, “The medicine will work soon. She felt foolish for leaving water for Pip every night and asked me anxiously if I had been lying to her all along. My heart ached with guilt. I knelt down gently, ready to apologize and tell her the whole truth, fearing she would be disappointed and never trust me again.
However, Lily hugged me. She wiped away her tears and smiled softly. She said she did not feel angry or upset at all. She knew Pip was not a real fairy, but the warm love and happy moments the stories brought her were real magic. She thanked me for protecting her heart and driving away all her fears over the years. At that moment, I realized true magic never lies in fairies. It is the pure love between parents and children that lasts forever.

The cancer took Dad away just a few days after he left my bedside. I later learned from the nurses that, despite his unbearable cancer pain and extreme physical weakness, he had wandered the cold, unfamiliar streets around the hospital for hours that day, just to find a shop selling the familiar chocolate-covered donut. He never breathed a word of his worsening condition to me, hiding all his agony and fear behind that sweet treat. That donut became his final silent confession of love, locking all our warmest shared memories into every crumb of the soft pastry and glossy chocolate frosting.
Years later, every time I pass by a donut shop, I always stop to buy a chocolate-covered donut. The moment the sweet chocolate melts on my tongue, I’m instantly transported back to those sunny mornings in Dad’s old truck, the warm coffee steady between my knees, and his soft smile as he handed me the specially prepared donut. It’s never just a snack to me; it’s a timeless hug from Dad, a quiet reminder that his unwavering love has never left my side. It gives me endless courage to get through every hard day, just like he did when he flew to my hospital bed against all odds.

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1: Aislinn pulled on her sweater and boots and hurried down the hallway.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: The next morning, Aislinn woke beside the horse.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1: Aislinn pulled on her sweater and boots and hurried down the hallway.
Paragraph 2: The next morning, Aislinn woke beside the horse.
She ran to the seashore and found some ice in the crate.
Down to the seashore rushed Aislinn, only to find that the ice in the crate had melted into water. (Aislinn
解析: 将 "Down to the seashore" 提前,配合 "rushed Aislinn",生动地描绘了她急切奔跑的动作。
Never / Seldom / Not only / Not until / Hardly...when...
She will not give up. She will try her best.
Never will she give up before the difficulties.
解析: "Never" 开头引起部分倒装,比 "She will never give up" 语气更强,更能体现人物的坚毅。
(Scarcely/Hardly...when...)
As soon as she applied the ice water, Caper let out a sigh.
Hardly had she applied the ice water to his hooves when Caper let out a long sigh of relief.
Paragraph 1:
Aislinn pulled on her sweater and boots and hurried down the hallway. Down to the cold beach rushed the determined girl, clutching the empty crate. However, Not only was the ice completely melted, but also the crate was empty. Seeing the waves rolling, an idea flashed across her mind: the seawater itself was cold enough! Into the freezing waves waded Aislinn, ignoring the biting chill, and soaked her clothes and the crate thoroughly. Back at the stable, she carefully wrapped Caper’s hooves with the wet cloth.
Paragraph 2:
The next morning, Aislinn woke beside the horse. Never had she seen Caper look so peaceful; his breathing was steady, and the terrible swelling had gone down significantly. Hardly had Aislinn touched his hooves when Caper nuzzled her gently, his eyes full of gratitude. Grandfather arrived, astonished by the miracle. "You’ve saved him, child," he whispered. Aislinn smiled, knowing that with love and wisdom, they would face the market again.
1.Down to the cold beach rushed the determined girl...
2.Not only was the ice completely melted...
类型: 部分倒装(Not only...but also...
3.Into the freezing waves waded Aislinn...
4.Never had she seen Caper look so peaceful...

5.Hardly had Aislinn touched his hooves when...
