A new kind of hostel. B. The development of hostels. C. The reasons for the popularity of hostels. 18. By whom were hostels mostly used years ago? A. Hikers. B. Business travelers. C. Older tourists. 19. How did the economic crisis influence hostels? A. It brought down the price. B. It increased the business. C. It promoted better services. 20. What does the speaker say about modern hostels? A. Their services are various. B. Most of them are in the countryside. C. They provide free bikes for the customers. B 18. A 19. B 20. W: Hostels all over Europe have changed greatly in the past years. Years ago hostels were mostly used by hikers and walkers in the countryside, but today hostels attract people who don’t want to stay at a hotel, such as holidaymakers, business travelers and even older tourists. Most travelers spend nights at hostels because of the low price. Group rooms with 4 beds and a shared bath for the whole floor can be as low as 15 dollars a night. A single room with a private bath can cost up to 50 dollars. It may sound strange, but the economic crisis that started in 2008 has meant more business for hostels. Many travelers cannot afford expensive hotels any more. More and more travelers want to stay at a hostel because of the atmosphere. It is easier to meet people, make friends and do things together. Hostels today can offer Internet cafés, live music and kitchens in which you can prepare your own meals. They also help guests rent bikes, organize city tours or arrange cheap theater tickets. A KNOXVILLE HOTEL DEALS & OFFERS By now, pretty much everyone is in need of a vacation, and when it comes to hotel deals, Knoxville has plenty to offer. Now in his early 90s, Foster still remains true to many of the principles that guided him at the start of a career that began more than half a century ago. When he started as an architect, he believed that simply giving people a nice view to look at would make them happier. Now, he says that’s a scientific fact — and he’s still providing those views today. Many of his most famous buildings are huge and glassy. It’s a style we’ re now used to, but Foster was designing these light- filled creations at a time when Western cities were still dominated by thick blocks of concrete (混凝土). It is not because Foster has any problem with concrete — he used lots of it in Apple Park, the technology giant’s California headquarters. But that huge ring is also typical of Foster in that it brings the outside in, with vast windows and shared spaces looking out onto greenery. Perhaps his most famous building — the London building known as the “Gherkin” because of its similarity in shape to the fruit — has views that are slightly less green. But it itself can be seen from far and wide. Completed in 2004, it has become one of London’s most recognizable buildings. Although some feel the Gherkin is out of place, it is in keeping with Foster’s previous creations: the City Hall beside the Thames in London, his glassy reconstruction of the German Reichstag, and his1980s design for the HSBC building in Hong Kong. Despite some health problems later in life, Foster continues to work.“ There is never enough time to do everything I would like,” he said in 2011. Since then, he has designed Apple Park, museums, an airport, and developed the concept for the Lusail Stadium in Qatar. If the only constant is change, Foster has been a force of it in the world of architecture — and he’s not done yet. 24. What is Foster’s initial principle for architectural design? A. Buildings should be highly cost-effective. B. Design styles should keep pace with the times. C. Architecture should be based on scientific theory. D. Nice views should come first in creating buildings. 25. What is a feature of Foster’s most creations? A. fancy lighting decoration. B. Vast glass-equipped looks. C. Long architectural patterns. D. massive concrete structural forms. 26. What is the author’s purpose in referring to the Gherkin in paragraph 3? A. To display Foster’s design principles. B. To contrast it with Foster’s usual style. C. To show Foster’s global fame. D. To explain Foster’s family motto. 27. What can be learned about Foster’s career? A. He prefers historical styles to modern trends. B. His career life contradicts the principles he sticks to. C. His early beliefs are challenged by new architectural concepts. D. His consistency contributes to his lifelong creative work. D 25. B 26. A 27. 根据第一段“When he started as an architect, he believed that simply giving people a nice view to look at would make them happier.(当他刚开始从事建筑师工作时,他坚信只要能为人们提供一个美丽的景观供他们欣赏,就能让他们更加开心)”可知,福斯特在建筑设计方面的首要原则是在建造建筑物时,应首先考虑美观效果。 根据第三段“Perhaps his most famous building — the London building known as the “Gherkin” because of its similarity in shape to the fruit — has views that are slightly less green.(或许他设计的最著名的建筑——那座位于伦敦、因外形酷似水果而被称为“小黄瓜”的建筑——其窗外的景色略显不那么葱郁了)”以及“Although some feel the Gherkin is out of place, it is in keeping with Foster’s previous creations: the City Hall beside the Thames in London, his glassy reconstruction of the German Reichstag, and his1980s design for the HSBC building in Hong Kong.(尽管有人认为“鹅蛋形建筑”显得格格不入,但它的设计风格与福斯特之前的作品相契合:伦敦泰晤士河畔的市政厅、他为德国国会大厦所做的玻璃结构复原设计,以及他于20世纪80年代为香港汇丰银行大楼所做的设计)”可知,提及小黄瓜大厦这一细节,作者的目的是展示福斯特的设计原则。故选A。 根据第一段““The only constant is change.” British architect Norman Foster says this is his family’s motto (座右铭). Now in his early 90s, Foster still remains true to many of the principles that guided him at the start of a career that began more than half a century ago.(“唯一不变的就是变化。”英国建筑师诺曼·福斯特如是说,这是他家族的座右铭。如今,福斯特已年近九旬,但他仍坚守着多年前职业生涯伊始时所秉持的诸多原则。而他的职业生涯始于半个多世纪以前)”以及全文围绕他“坚持初始设计原则”展开,即使90多岁仍持续创作,且作品风格一致,可知,福斯特持之以恒精神促成了他一生的创作工作。故选D。 C Companies are used to celebrating addition. Profits, customers and share prices should go up rather than fall. Larger numbers are a measure of career success: managers get promoted by taking on more reports, running higher budgets and earning bigger salaries. Companies are not always against subtraction (减法) . Though not a welcome one, reducing costs is a necessary part of management, which is often undervalued. The best bosses are those who take things away as well as add them on. That means clearing time for employees to get work done. Meetings are almost always called by bosses, but only some of them are useful. Shopify, an e-commerce company, began the year by subtracting 12,000 meetings from their schedules, and reported a rise in productivity as a result. Subtraction is not just about removing day-to-day distractions (干扰) . It’s also about taking decisions to kill off projects and products that are going nowhere, and to focus efforts on the most important parts. Peter Drucker, a management theorist, was a supporter of “planned subtraction” , so that resources that are tied up in minor activities are freed for more profitable use. Bosses should, he advised, always ask the same question of every detail of the company: “If we did not do this, would it be any different?” In The Case for Good Jobs, a new book, Zeynep Ton of MIT Sloan School of Management argues that doing less can often make sense. Costco, a famous American supermarket that believes in the “smart loss of sales”, has purposely limited product choices. That means it can focus its buying power more effectively, forecast demand more accurately and use its employees’ time more productively. “Less” may not sound like a great result for customers, but at some point choice is deeply tiring. When you have spent more time trying to decide what to watch on a streaming service than it takes to go to the cinema and watch the same film twice, few choices seem pretty attractive. 28. Why does the author mention the company Shopify in paragraph 2? A. To present a fact. B. To draw a conclusion. C. To support an opinion. D. To make a comparison. 29. Which statement does Peter Drucker most likely agree with? A. Companies should quit unpromising tasks. B. Bosses should give up profits for resources. C. Bosses shouldn’t remove everyday distractions. D. Companies should focus on some unfinished work. 30. Which of the following measures is regarded as effective “doing less” commercially? A. Stores give customers more time to shop. B. Cinemas run only one particular film a day. C. Streaming websites upload more new movies. D. Supermarkets offer a limited variety of goods. 31. What is the best title of the text? A. The best companies celebrate addition. B. The best bosses know how to subtract work. C. Companies use numbers to measure success. D. Smart bosses go against the idea of subtraction. C 29. A 30. D 31. 根据第二段“Meetings are almost always called by bosses, but only some of them are useful. Shopify, an e-commerce company, began the year by subtracting 12,000 meetings from their schedules, and reported a rise in productivity as a result.(会议几乎总是由老板召集,但只有一部分有用。电子商务公司 Shopify 年初从日程中减去了 12,000 场会议,结果效率有所提高)”可知,作者先提出“部分会议无意义,减少干扰可提升效率”的观点,再以 Shopify的案例说明“减法”的有效性。引用该案例是为了支持前文观点。故选C项。 【29题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“Peter Drucker, a management theorist, was a supporter of ‘planned subtraction’, so that resources that are tied up in minor activities are freed for more profitable use.(管理理论家彼得・德鲁克支持‘有计划的减法’,以便将束缚在次要活动中的资源释放出来,用于更有利润的用途)”及“Bosses should, he advised, always ask the same question of every detail of the company: ‘If we did not do this, would it be any different?’(他建议,老板应该总是对公司的每个细节问同一个问题:‘如果我们不做这件事,会有什么不同吗?’)” 故选A项。 根据最后一段“Costco, a famous American supermarket that believes in the ‘smart loss of sales’, has purposely limited product choices. That means it can focus its buying power more effectively, forecast demand more accurately and use its employees’ time more productively.(美国著名超市Costco信奉‘明智的销售损失’,有意限制了产品选择。这意味着它能更有效地集中购买力,更准确地预测需求,并更高效地利用员工时间)”可知,通过减少商品种类提升运营效率是“doing less”的典型案例。故选D项。 【31题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文可知,文章第二段明确提出“The best bosses are those who take things away as well as add them on.(最优秀的老板既懂得做加法,也懂得做减法)”,随后通过Shopify、德鲁克理论及Costco的案例,论证“减法管理”对提升效率的重要性。 The best bosses know how to subtract work.(最好的老板知道如何减少工作量)与引文中的核心观点直接呼应,可作为最佳标题。故选B项。 D Rotten seaweed is starting to pile up on beaches across the Caribbean. The uncontrolled blooms of sticky brown algae (藻类) called sargassum have become an annual disaster for the coastal areas. Removing seaweed and sending it to the landfill is costly and takes up declining space in landfills. Luckily, a company in Grenada, a small island nation in the Caribbean, has a better idea. The company that would like to use Grenadian sargassum is SarGas, a start-up founded in 2023 to harvest the sargassum before it hits the beaches and turn it into a renewable source of fuel. The company has set up a small machine called Digester that uses bacteria to swallow sargassum and release methane (甲烷), the main component of natural gas. Instead of letting the methane escape and warm the planet, as it would if the sargassum rotted on the shore or in a landfill, SarGas collects the gas and uses it to fuel the oven at a local bakery. Now the start-up is applying for a permit to build a bigger Digester that would power a biogas-fueled generator (发电机) to make electricity for Grenadians. Generating electricity this way would be cheaper and cleaner, said SarGas CEO Benjamin Nestorovic. Almost all Grenadian electricity is made from generators running on imported diesel (柴油), which causes pollution and forces Grenadians to pay some of the highest electricity rates on Earth. That’s starting to change as Grenada installs solar panels, but biogas complements solar, because the sargassum-based fuel can generate electricity at night. The first planned SarGas generator would use 5,000 to 8,000 tons of sargassum per year. It could generate 160 kilo-watts of power, which is about half a percent of Grenada’s peak demand. By saving diesel and preventing methane emissions at the landfill, it would avoid the equivalent (等量) of about 2,000 cars’ worth of greenhouse emissions. 32. How does the machine Digester work? A. By trapping algae on beaches. B. By recycling rubbish in landfills. C. By using a renewable source of fuel. D. By breaking seaweed down for energy. 33. What does the underlined word “complements” in Paragraph 4 mean? A. Interacts with. B. keeps up with. C. Competes with. D. Pairs well with. 34. What effect will the SarGas generator have on Grenada? A. It will remove the pressure of local landfills. B. It will address a national environmental issue. C. The nation will depend on imported fossil fuels. D. The nation will offer new economic opportunities. 35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text? A. From Seaweed to Power B. From Rubbish to Digester C. Calling for Cleanup in Beaches D. Turning Sargassum into Charity 【答案】32. D 33. D 34. B 35. 根据第二段“The company has set up a small machine called Digester that uses bacteria to swallow sargassum and release methane (甲烷), the main component of natural gas.(该公司设置了一台名为Digester的小型机器,它利用细菌分解马尾藻并释放出甲烷,甲烷是天然气的主要成分)”可知,Digester机器通过分解海藻来获取能源。 根据第四段“That’s starting to change as Grenada installs solar panels, but biogas complements solar, because the sargassum - based fuel can generate electricity at night.(随着格林纳达安装太阳能电池板,这种情况开始改变,但沼气complements太阳能,因为以马尾藻为基础的燃料可以在夜间发电)”可知,太阳能白天发电,而沼气夜间发电,二者相互配合,“complements”意思接近“Pairs well with(与……很好地配合)”。故选D项。 【34题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段“Rotten seaweed is starting to pile up on beaches across the Caribbean. The uncontrolled blooms of sticky brown algae (藻类) called sargassum have become an annual disaster for the coastal areas. (腐烂的海藻开始在加勒比海各地的海滩上堆积。这种名为马尾藻的粘稠棕色藻类不受控制地大量繁殖,已成为沿海地区每年都会面临的灾难)”以及最后一段“By saving diesel and preventing methane emissions at the landfill, it would avoid the equivalent (等量) of about 2,000 cars’worth of greenhouse emissions. (通过节省柴油和防止垃圾填埋场的甲烷排放,它将避免相当于约2000辆汽车的温室气体排放)”可知,SarGas发电机将解决格林纳达的一个全国性环境问题,故选B项。 【35题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第二段“The company that would like to use Grenadian sargassum is SarGas, a start-up founded in 2023 to harvest the sargassum before it hits the beaches and turn it into a renewable source of fuel. The company has set up a small machine called Digester that uses bacteria to swallow sargassum and release methane (甲烷), the main component of natural gas.(希望利用格林纳达马尾藻的公司是SarGas,这是一家2023年成立的初创企业。其目的是在马尾藻冲到海滩之前进行采集,并将其转化为可再生燃料。该公司搭建了一台名为 “Digester(消化器)” 的小型设备,它利用细菌分解马尾藻,释放出甲烷——天然气的主要成分)”可知,文章主要讲述SarGas公司将海滩上堆积成灾的马尾藻转化为能源。故选A项。 My husband and I just spent a week in Paris.____36____So the first thing we did was rent a fantastically expensive sixth-floor apartment the size of a cupboard. It was so tiny that we had to leave our suitcases in the hallway. The place wasn’t entirely authentic, though. Unlike a normal Parisian apartment, the plumbing (水管) worked. ____37____Our building even had a tiny lift with a female voice that said, “Ouverture des portes,” in perfect French. That is the only French phrase I mastered, and it’s a shame I don’t have much use for it. Parisians are different from you and me. They never look lazy or untidy. As someone noted in this paper a couple of weeks ago, they eat great food and never gain weight. ____38____ French strawberries do not taste like cardboard. Instead, they explode in your mouth like little flavor bombs. ____39____ On our first morning in Paris, I went around the corner to the food market to pick up some groceries. It is not just about telling the truth, but also about staying true to our values even when facing pressure. Last month, I accidentally broke my deskmate’s treasured pen. Though tempted to hide the truth, I chose to confess my mistake immediately. Instead of blaming me, she was deeply moved by my sincerity, and our bond grew even stronger. This experience makes me realize that honesty is the light that never fades. Only when we are sincere to others can we earn their true trust and keep our hearts at peace. It is this virtue that will guide me through every step of my high school life. 2 Among all virtues, perseverance is the one that lights my way. It means sticking to our goals even when faced with setbacks, rather than giving up. Last semester, I struggled with my math grades and nearly lost heart. Instead of quitting, I made a daily study plan, asked teachers for help, and kept practicing every day. After months of hard work, my efforts paid off and I finally made great progress in the final exam. This experience teaches me that perseverance is the key to growth. However tough things get, only by keeping going can we turn difficulties into stepping stones. This virtue will always encourage me to keep moving forward bravely. 3 Of all virtues, gratitude is the warm light that guides my way. It means being grateful for people who care for us and repaying their kindness with actions. Last winter, I fell ill and was absent from school for an entire week. Aware of my anxiety about falling behind in studies, my deskmate carefully took comprehensive class notes and spared her spare time to clarify difficult knowledge points for me. Greatly touched by her selfless favor, I offer to assist her with English, the subject she struggles with, as a way to repay her generosity. This experience reveals that gratitude means much more than casual thanks. It is a precious bond linking hearts and spreading warmth. Only by passing on kindness gratefully can we gain true friendship. This virtue will always light my way to a kinder life. 词汇积累: 真诚的:true→sincere/genuine 面对:facing→be faced with/be confronted by 宝贵的:treasured→cherished/precious 选择:choose/select 2. Of all the virtues, honesty is the one that lights my way. I thought I’d given myself enough time to get to the airport, however, as often was the case, I was running late and had to pack my bag with little time left. Confused about what to carry, I stuffed all the clothes in my little bag, taking no notice of the weight. Thirty minutes before the flight, I was waiting at my terminal (航站楼) in the airport and couldn’t stop smiling. I was too excited to go on a much-needed trip. A little while later, I heard an announcement “Passengers flying to Taupo on Flight NZ5091 are requested to weigh your cabin luggage and collect your tag”. I stood in the line waiting for my turn, clueless about how much my bag would weigh, deep inside hoping not over the weight limit. When it was my turn, I placed my bag on the weighing scale and whoaaaa!! It was 9.4 kgs. I asked the flight attendant if I could buy $20 extra luggage allowance (行李费) as shown on the app but I was too late for it. Instead, I was asked to pay an additional fee of $65. I either had to pay or leave something away to bring it down to 7 kgs. I asked the attendant whether they would give my stuff back to me if I returned 3 days later and surprisingly I was told I wouldn’t get it back. To me, a bad luggage experience had the power to completely sour a trip. With no other alternatives, I decided to give up some of my stuff. Unsettled, annoyed, disappointed! As I started removing the items, I saw a lady approaching me. It looked like she had heard the whole thing. She sat down next to me. “Are you OK? I should be able to help you.” She said. I looked up, surprised, and saw her pointing at her bag. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ While I was worried whether I could get my stuff back, the plane landed. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 I looked up, surprised, and saw her pointing at her bag. She said he didn’t take many things and could help me share some of my belongings. I couldn’t believe the help from a stranger. But, I thought to myself “this is the best way.” I am grateful to her for her kindness and transferred my overweight items to her bag. I managed to get on the plane without paying any extra fees. When we got on the plane, our seats were far apart and we didn’t communicate much, so I knew very little about this stranger. While I was worried whether I could get my stuff back, the plane landed. There were a lot of people getting out of the plane. I was waiting for my turn and waiting for the strange woman to pass me by and return my stuff. In fact, I had been prepared for the worst. All sorts of disturbing thoughts ran through my mind. Just then, the strange woman tapped me on the shoulder. And voluntarily returned my things. I thanked the strange woman from the bottom of my heart. It also gave me a new faith in humanity. 词汇激活 行为类 ①交流:communicate /interact ②帮助:help/assist ③成功做某事:manage to do sth/succeed in doing sth ④感谢:thank/appreciate 情绪类 ①令人不安的:disconcerting/disturbing ②感激的:grateful/appreciative 【点睛】【高分句型1】When we got on the plane, our seats were far apart and we didn’t communicate much, so I knew very little about this stranger. C Companies are used to celebrating addition. D Rotten seaweed is starting to pile up on beaches across the Caribbean. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $mr. Williams, how can I help you? IT never . used to trouble me, but now, after only a couple of glasses, I start to feel really terrible. Could you give me some advice? Good evening, sir. Here is the menu. Would you like to order now? Yes, but i'm in a rush. Can I be served out of here in half an hour? Did you go shopping today? Where's the beer you promised to bring me? I plan to, but the car was out of order, so I did them sowing instead. Would IT be all right if I left for a minute? I have to make a phone call. I'd rather you didn't. The thing is, this is a very important . part of the lesson. I see. Okay. hello, this is roy, widely speaking. And it's about the seminar in january. Oh yes, I know the one you mean. Well. we're finding IT difficult to get a venue for the and I wonder if you would be happy if we changed IT to the twenty sixth or twenty seven instead. Excuse me, would you be able to tell me where the Emily Parker hall is? I'm looking for the building where they're holding the course information conference. sure. You can follow me. What do you want to study? Well. if I get high enough grades on my school exams, i'm hoping to be accepted into the medical school. But if I don't make IT into medicine, i'll probably do medical science. What about you? Oh. I am interested in history and biochemistry, but i'm not . sure yet. I wonder what he looks like. Oh, I can't wait to see him. His email said he'd be wearing a White hat. Oh. there is. Hey, is a bell logan. Why on earth are you hiding here? White hat? Come on. Don't tell me. You're the guy. IT can be true. Yes, on the you . set me up. Let me explain. I didn't mean to hurt you. How dare you hang on . one second. Hear me out just this once as a bell. Why did you lie to me in the email? So what do you want to watch on T. V tonight? What's on? Well, there is a reality show at seven on channel five. I don't like reality shows. They usually show people doing crazy things like eating life. Fisher, swimming in a poor full of snakes, are not . into that weird stuff. What's worse, they are too long. Personally, i'd rather watch movies with a little bit more action. Do you want to watch avatar? No, i've seen in a million times. I'd like to see something different. Okay, how about this on channel two at nine, there's a home improvement show about fixing anything around the house. We do have a few things that you could repair . on the bathroom, fixing things. He's certainly not competitive or stressed, but he like cycling and things like that. Anyway, I thought he sounded as if he'd fit in. And does he want to move in straight away? The room needs sorting out. Well, he's paid is red for his present place up to the authority of the september. But he said that if possible, he'd like to move in a bit before then he said the twenty eight of september, oh, i've told him we would take the room back when we had our baby in. He said, that's no problem. That's great. Hostels all over europe have changed greatly in the past years. Years ago, hostels were mostly used by hikers and Walkers in the countryside. But today, hostels attract people who don't want to stay at a hotel, such as holiday makers, business travellers and even to older tourists. Most travel spent nights at hostels because of the low Price group. Rooms with four beds and a shared bath for the whole floor can be as low as fifteen dollars a night. A single room with a private bath can cost up to fifty dollars. IT may sound strange, but the economic crisis that started in two thousand eight has meant more business for hostels. Many travellers cannot afford expensive hotels anymore. More and more travellers want to stay at a hostel because of the atmosphere. IT is easier to meet people, make friends and do things together. Hostels today can offer internet cafes, live music and kitchen in which you can prepare your own meals. They also help guess threat bike, organized city tours or arrange cheap theater tickets.
