Unit 4 Helping out Starting out 1. Basic Information Textbook: Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, Grade 8 Volume 2 Teaching Topic: Unit 4 Helping out (Starting out) Class Type: Lead-in Lesson & Oral Communication Lesson Teaching Duration: 45 minutes Teaching Objects: Grade 8 students Teaching Aids: Multimedia PPT, textbook, blackboard, pictures about helping behaviors 2. Teaching Analysis 2.1 Textbook Analysis This lesson is the opening part of Unit 4, which focuses on the theme of kindness and helping others. There are two core learning tasks in this section. The first part requires students to look at pictures and answer two questions, aiming to activate students’ daily life experience and encourage them to share stories about helping others. The second part presents three famous quotes from Lei Feng, Martin Luther King and Aesop. Students need to understand the quotes’ meanings and express their personal opinions. This lesson serves as a warm-up for the whole unit. It helps students accumulate relevant vocabulary and sentences, cultivate good virtues of helping others, and lay a solid linguistic and emotional foundation for subsequent learning. 2.2 Students Analysis For Grade 8 students, they have mastered basic English pronunciation and simple sentence structures. They are able to make simple conversations and describe daily events. Besides, they are familiar with Lei Feng and have a positive attitude towards helping others. However, they still have some weaknesses. Firstly, their oral expression is limited and they often use single and simple sentences. Secondly, it is difficult for them to fully understand the implied meaning of English quotes. Thirdly, some shy students are unwilling to speak in public. Therefore, various interactive and group activities are designed to lower their speaking pressure and improve their participation. 3. Teaching Objectives 3.1 Language Competence · Master key new words and phrases: limited, limit, kindness, waste, serve, agree with · Grasp core functional sentences: Do you know any stories about helping others? Can you share one with the class? Which quotes do you most agree with? Why? · Be able to briefly tell a helping story and state personal ideas about the given quotes in simple and correct English. 3.2 Thinking Quality · Analyze and understand the deep meaning of different quotes independently. · Think logically about the value of kindness and helping others, and form simple critical thinking. 3.3 Cultural Awareness · Learn and appreciate famous quotes from Chinese and foreign celebrities. · Realize that kindness is a universal virtue without national boundaries and respect diverse cultures. 3.4 Learning Ability · Take an active part in group discussion and class presentation bravely. · Develop the habit of collecting and appreciating beautiful English quotes. 4. Key Points and Difficult Points 4.1 Key Points 1. Complete picture observation tasks and share personal or famous helping stories. 2. Teaching Procedures (45 minutes) Step 1 Warming-up & Lead-in (5 mins) 6.1 Greeting The teacher greets students politely to shorten the distance with students. T: Good morning, everyone! How is your mood today? Have you ever helped others in your daily life? Ss: Yes, I have. 6.2 Lead-in The teacher shows several pictures about helping others, such as helping the elderly, volunteering and helping classmates. Then lead students into the unit topic — Helping out. Step 2 Look at the pictures and answer questions (15 mins) 6.1 Task Presentation The teacher presents two original textbook questions on the screen: ① Do you know any stories about helping others? ② Can you share one with the class? 6.2 Picture Observation Students observe the pictures carefully and describe what people are doing. The teacher guides students to use phrases like help others, give a hand. 6.3 Group Discussion Students discuss in groups of four for 5 minutes. The teacher offers simple sentence templates to reduce speaking difficulty: I know a story about... One day,... He/She helped... It is very warm. 6.4 Class Sharing Several students are invited to share their stories in front of the class. The teacher gives positive comments and corrects simple grammar mistakes. 6.5 Brief Summary T: Every small kindness matters. Helping others makes ourselves and the world warmer. Step 3 Read the quotes and answer questions (18 mins) 6.1 Show the quotes The teacher shows three famous quotes and leads students to read aloud twice to correct pronunciation. ① Man's life is limited. But there is no limit to service to the people. — Lei Feng ② We must learn that there is nothing greater than to do something for others. — Martin Luther King ③ A kindness is never wasted. — Aesop 6.2 Vocabulary Explanation The teacher explains key words and difficult phrases to help students understand the quotes. 6.3 Translation & Appreciation Teacher and students translate the quotes together and analyze the deep meaning of each sentence. 6.4 Finish the textbook questions Present the two fixed questions: ① What do the quotes mean? ② Which quotes do you most agree with? Why? 6.5 Language Support Offer answer templates for students: I agree with the quote by... Because kindness can bring warmth to people. 6.6 Opinion Sharing Volunteer students share their opinions. The teacher makes a conclusion that all quotes teach people to be kind and helpful. Step 4 Summary & Homework (5 mins) 6.4 Class Summary Firstly, conclude the key words and sentences learned today. Secondly, emphasize the importance of helping others. 6.5 Homework 1. Recite the three famous quotes. 2. Write a short passage (about 5 sentences) to describe an experience of helping others. 3. Sort out and memorize the key new words. Step 5 Class Evaluation (2 mins) The teacher evaluates students’ performance in discussion and presentation. Praise active students and encourage shy students to speak bravely next time. 7. Teaching Reflection 7.1 Teaching Advantages The teaching procedures are clear and closely based on textbook contents. Rich picture and group activities stimulate students’ interest in oral English. The combination of story sharing and quote appreciation integrates moral education into English class, which achieves the teaching goals well. 7.2 Existing Problems Some low-level students have difficulty in sentence organization. A small number of students are too shy to take part in class sharing. Besides, the quote understanding takes too much time. 7.3 Improvement Measures Simplify the learning tasks for low-level students and provide more sentence templates. Design one-on-one questioning to encourage shy students. Reasonably control the time of quote explanation to ensure high teaching efficiency. 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
