Leonard John’s cancer journey began with a problem related to his appendix (阑尾). During this time, his doctor discovered a spot on his lung. The surgeon urged John to get checked out immediately, but fear overtook him and he postponed further examination. About a month later, the surgeon followed up with him. “Did you go and get this taken care of?” the surgeon asked. John admitted he hadn’t. He made every excuse imaginable to avoid it because fear had him in its hold. Finally, the surgeon said, “I have a doctor. Give him a call.” That led John to Riverside, where he met Dr. Hamden.
The first round of treatment John went through involved chemotherapy (化疗). Throughout this experience, he relied heavily on the support system around him. “The nurse at Riverside was a great source of comfort. Every time I saw her, we connected well. She helped me stay focused and positive.”
John also realized that his fear gradually subsided as he became more involved in his treatment. “I look back and wonder why I wasn’t scared. I think it was because I trusted the people around me, especially Dr. Hamden.”
After six months of intense chemotherapy, John was declared cancer-free. He shifted to a less-intense treatment plan. “Dr. Hamden told me straight up that without treatment, I had six months to live. His honesty helped me trust him completely,” John said.
John also depended on his Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) community. With over seven years of sobriety (戒酒), he had learned important strategies for dealing with life’s challenges. “The AA group regularly organizes group activities where we share our experiences openly. When I was feeling low during chemotherapy, they would remind me of my strength in maintaining sobriety, and encouraged me to apply the same determination to fighting cancer. They kept me on track, helping me stay positive when the treatment got tough.”
Throughout his cancer journey, John appreciated the expertise and warm nature of the staff at Riverside. “The staff here is absolutely amazing. They kept me focused and helped me manage the stress. Stress can do real damage, but I didn’t experience that at Riverside,” he said.
41.Why did John delay further examination at first?
A.He was too busy to do it. B.He was scared of the result.
C.He couldn’t afford the cost. D.He didn’t believe the doctor.
42.What does the underlined word “subsided” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Increased. B.Returned. C.Disappeared. D.Changed.
43.What is John’s attitude toward Dr. Hamden?
A.Positive. B.Doubtful. C.Unconcerned. D.Sympathetic.
44.What role did the AA community play in John’s cancer journey?
A.It recommended Dr. Hamden to him. B.It funded his chemotherapy.
C.It taught him how to quit smoking. D.It provided emotional and social support.
45.What can we infer about John from his cancer journey?
A.He had never received any psychological support before his illness.

At top universities, there’s a phenomenon known as “Stanford Duck Syndrome (综合征)”. Like ducks, students appear to move gracefully. However, beneath the surface, they’re kicking desperately to keep up.
Experts from Stanford’s Health Services uncovered this troubling trend: during the day, many Stanford students are seen socializing in cafés, seemingly without any stress or the need to study. However, at night, they start studying, sometimes for the entire night, trying to maintain the image of effortless success. This comes at a high price: tiredness and anxiety are widespread. Furthermore, it leads to a common misconception: true geniuses achieve success with ease, while those working hard are less capable.
In an effort to challenge this misconception, researchers designed an experiment. Participants were asked to observe a series of colors carefully while scientists tracked their brain activity throughout the process. The experiment was divided into two parts: one with easily distinguishable colors and the other with colors that were quite similar, requiring more effort to differentiate. As the difficulty of the task increased, there was a noticeable increase in brain activity, particularly in areas linked to memory and abstract reasoning.
The study reveals that as tasks require more effort, more areas of the brain become engaged. Growth doesn’t come from talent alone but from the consistent application of effort.
Our brain functions like a muscle. Without effort, even our inborn talents will fade over time.
This pushes us to reconsider the underlying culture that might lead to this phenomenon. Instead of focusing too much on outcomes or singing high praise for inborn talents, we should emphasize the learning process and continuous improvement. By encouraging a culture that values effort, we can help students realize that intelligence is not fixed but grows through hard work. Such a shift would not only reduce the pressures associated with the “Stanford Duck Syndrome”, but also have a profound impact on personal development and the future of education.
46.What phenomenon does the “Stanford Duck Syndrome” probably describe?
A.Prioritizing effort over well-being.
B.Relieving stress through social activities.
C.Displaying graceful images to attract others.
D.Hiding hard work to appear naturally gifted.
47.How does the experiment in paragraph 3 challenge the misconception?
A.By proving focus enhances brain function.
B.By showing effort fuels the brain activity.
C.By linking color recognition to intelligence.
D.By associating careful observation with talent.
48.What is the author’s main concern about “Stanford Duck Syndrome”?
A.It values the learning process over outcomes.
B.It prevents students from recognizing their talents.
C.It causes stress and false ideas about success.
D.It makes students prioritize socializing over studying.
49.What can be inferred about the participants in the experiment?
A.Their brain activity rose as tasks grew more challenging.
B.They were students from a top university.
C.They could easily tell similar colors apart.
D.Their learning process was not valued by the researchers.
50.Which of the following might the author agree with?
A.Fortune favors those with a clear vision.
B.Keep moving forward even when no one sees it.
C.Work in silence and let success make the noise.
D.Sweat is the ink that writes a masterpiece.

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了“斯坦福鸭子综合征”现象及其影响,并强调努力的重要性。
46.细节理解题。根据第一段中“At top universities, there’s a phenomenon known as “Stanford Duck Syndrome (综合征)”. Like ducks, students appear to move gracefully. However, beneath the surface, they’re kicking desperately to keep up.(在顶尖大学里,有一种现象被称为“斯坦福鸭子综合症”。就像鸭子一样,学生们表面上看起来从容不迫。然而在表面之下,他们却在拼命蹬水以求跟上)”和第二段中“However, at night, they start studying, sometimes for the entire night, trying to maintain the image of effortless success.(然而,到了晚上,他们开始学习,有时一整夜,试图保持毫不费力的成功形象)”可知,“斯坦福鸭子综合征”描述的是学生表面看似轻松,实则暗中拼命努力以显得天资出众的现象。故选D项。
47.推理判断题。根据第三段中“In an effort to challenge this misconception, researchers designed an experiment. Participants were asked to observe a series of colors carefully while scientists tracked their brain activity throughout the process. The experiment was divided into two parts: one with easily distinguishable colors and the other with colors that were quite similar, requiring more effort to differentiate. As the difficulty of the task increased, there was a noticeable increase in brain activity, particularly in areas linked to memory and abstract reasoning.(为了挑战这一误解,研究人员设计了一项实验。参与者被要求仔细观察一系列颜色,科学家则全程追踪他们的大脑活动。实验分为两部分:一部分是容易区分的颜色,另一部分是极其相似、需要更费力辨别的颜色。随着任务难度的增加,大脑活动显著增强,尤其是在与记忆和抽象推理相关的区域)”和第四段“The study reveals that as tasks require more effort, more areas of the brain become engaged. Growth doesn’t come from talent alone but from the consistent application of effort.(研究表明,当任务需要更多努力时,大脑中更多区域会被调动起来。成长不仅来自天赋,更来自持续的努力)”可推知,实验通过展示任务越困难、大脑活动越活跃,直接证明了努力能够促进大脑运转,从而反驳了第二段中提到的“真正的天才很容易成功”的错误观念。故选B项。
48.细节理解题。根据第二段中“This comes at a high price: tiredness and anxiety are widespread. Furthermore, it leads to a common misconception: true geniuses achieve success with ease, while those working hard are less capable.(这带来了高昂的代价:疲劳和焦虑普遍存在。此外,它还导致了一种普遍的错误观念:真正的天才轻松获得成功,而努力的人则能力较差)”可知,作者对“斯坦福鸭子综合征”的主要担忧在于它给学生带来的身心压力以及对成功的错误认知。故选C项。
49.推理判断题。根据第三段中“As the difficulty of the task increased, there was a noticeable increase in brain activity(随着任务难度的增加,大脑活动明显增强)”可知,实验参与者在任务难度提高时,大脑活动也随之增强。由此可推断出,他们的脑活动随任务挑战性增加而上升。故选A项。
50.推理判断题。根据第四段中“Growth doesn’t come from talent alone but from the consistent application of effort.(成长不仅来自天赋,更来自持续的努力)”和最后一段中“By encouraging a culture that values effort, we can help students realize that intelligence is not fixed but grows through hard work.(通过倡导重视努力的文化,我们可以帮助学生认识到智力并非一成不变,而是通过努力得以增长)”可知,作者强调努力的价值和意义。D项“汗水是书写杰作的墨水”体现了努力是成就的关键,符合作者观点。故选D项。

There are hundreds of personality quizzes online that assert they can ascertain whether the right or left half of your brain is dominant. Left-brained people are supposedly logical and excel at language and math while right-brained people are more imaginative, emotionally intelligent and skilled with spatial reasoning. There’s just one problem: That’s not how brains work.
Popular science enthusiasts sort of took this idea and ran with it, and it’s become woven in popular culture now, and it’s not going away.
Despite this enduring belief, there’s no such thing as being “right-brained” or “left-brained”. Whether you’re someone who tends more towards creativity or logic has nothing to do with one hemisphere of your brain being dominant over the other. But the actual science of how the two halves of our brains work together is sometimes stranger than fiction.
The human brain is divided into two hemispheres, the left and right. In all vertebrate (脊椎的) animals, the right hemisphere controls the left side of the body and vice versa. And scientists have long known, thanks to the behaviors of patients who suffered brain injuries, that different areas of the brain do different things.
But many scientists struggled with this idea, because the very suggestion that the left and right halves of the brain operate differently disrupted the idea that nature tends toward perfect symmetry.
Work by neuroscientists (神经科学家) has revealed the importance of different hemispheres of the brain for different activities. However, their research quickly saw some misinterpretations in the general public: Some presumed creative people must be right-brained and logical people left-brained. It is proven that not only is personality unrelated to the different halves of the brain, but people aren’t really right or left-brained to begin with. The idea that we have left-dominant people and right-dominant people, and that this is related to personality, is categorically false. That’s never been supported in the neuroscience community. Neuroscientists don’t believe that and never have.
What scientists learned is that there are really important differences between the left hemisphere and the right hemisphere. It’s just that they have nothing to do with personality or whether cognitive strategy is more logical or free spirited or creative. While researchers have shown the limitations of how the hemispheres of our brains influence our lives, it’s not difficult to understand the appeal of such ideas. People are endlessly fascinated by themselves and their friends, and the subtle differences in how people think about the world are really meaningful to them. When you come up with an online quiz that tells us something about ourselves, we’re drawn to that. It’s irresistible. But you have to take it with an enormous grain of salt.
51.What do numerous personality quizzes online claim they are able to do?
A.Distinguish between the two hemispheres of one’s brain.
B.Determine whether one is left-brained or right-brained.
C.Tell if one is more of a linguist or of a mathematician.
D.Ascertain how one’s brain performs different tasks.
52.What does the author say is sometimes stranger than fiction?
A.How one hemisphere of the brain impacts creativity.
B.How the two halves of our brains work alternatively.
C.How the two hemispheres of our brains cooperate.
D.How one half of the brain dominates the other.
53.Why did many scientists have difficulty endorsing the idea that different areas of the brain do different things?
A.It contradicts the assumption that the two hemispheres of the brain are symmetrical.
B.It dismisses the view that the universe has been evolving in a consistent manner.
C.It is in conflict with the suggestion that the left and right halves of the brain work together.
D.It disrupts the idea that the right hemisphere of the brain controls the left side of the body.
54.What belief have neuroscientists long rejected according to the passage?
A.There are left-dominant people and right-dominant people with different personalities.
B.There are noticeable differences between the left and right hemispheres of the brain.
C.One’s personality is hardly related to the different halves of the brain.
D.Different areas of the brain are responsible for different activities.
55.What are we advised to do with an online quiz that tells us something about ourselves?
A.Follow its judgement. B.Scrutinize its originality.
C.Evaluate its popularity. D.Question its reliability.

51.细节理解题。根据第一段中“There are hundreds of personality quizzes online that assert they can ascertain whether the right or left half of your brain is dominant.(网上有数百种性格测试声称可以确定你的右脑还是左脑占主导地位)”可知,许多在线性格测试声称能够确定一个人是左脑还是右脑占主导地位。故选B项。
52.细节理解题。根据第三段中“But the actual science of how the two halves of our brains work together is sometimes stranger than fiction.(但是,关于我们大脑两半球如何协同工作的实际科学有时比虚构的故事还要离奇)”可知,作者认为大脑两半球如何协同工作的实际科学有时比虚构的故事还要离奇。故选C项。
53.细节理解题。根据第五段“But many scientists struggled with this idea, because the very suggestion that the left and right halves of the brain operate differently disrupted the idea that nature tends toward perfect symmetry.(但是许多科学家对这个想法感到困惑,因为大脑左右半球运作方式不同的说法,打破了自然趋向完美对称的观点)”可知,许多科学家难以认同大脑不同区域功能不同的观点,是因为这与大脑两半球对称的假设相矛盾。故选A项。
54.细节理解题。根据第六段中“The idea that we have left-dominant people and right-dominant people, and that this is related to personality, is categorically false. That’s never been supported in the neuroscience community. 55.推理判断题。根据最后一段中“When you come up with an online quiz that tells us something about ourselves, we’re drawn to that. It’s irresistible. But you have to take it with an enormous grain of salt.(当你看到一份能告诉我们一些关于自己的信息的在线测试时,我们会被吸引。这是无法抗拒的。但你必须持极大的保留态度)”可知,作者建议我们对那些告诉我们关于自己的在线测试持保留态度,即质疑其可靠性。故选D项。
第二部分:写作(共两节,满分35分)
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容完成下列各题。
My classmate, Lin Hao, was the quietest boy in our class. He was so shy that his voice was hardly ever heard. So, when our English teacher, Ms. Chen, announced an English speech contest, the last person we expected to sign up was Lin Hao.
Ms. Chen believed in the power of perseverance. “Everyone has a hidden strength,” she often said. “You just need to find the courage to show it.” Lin Hao must have taken her words to heart.
He chose a funny story about a clumsy panda for his speech. For the next two weeks, he practiced. He stayed after school, standing alone in the empty classroom, repeating his lines over and over. Sometimes, his voice would shake, and sometimes he would forget a word and go bright red. But he never stopped.
The day of the contest arrived. When it was Lin Hao’s turn, he walked onto the stage, his face pale. He began speaking, but his voice was a soft whisper. The audience leaned in, struggling to hear. My heart ached for him.
Suddenly, from the back of the room, we heard a gentle, clear voice. It was Ms. Chen. She wasn’t taking over, she was saying his lines with him, just loud enough to support him. It was like a guide rope for a climber. Hearing her, Lin Hao took a deep breath. His voice grew stronger and more confident. He remembered his funny story about the panda, and he even added a clumsy gesture with his hands.
The audience burst into laughter and then gave him a warm round of applause. It wasn’t a perfect performance, but it was full of true courage. That day, the quietest boy in our class found his voice. Ms. Chen’s simple act of support taught us all that perseverance isn’t always about doing it alone, sometimes, it’s about having the courage to accept help and let your voice be heard.
56.What was Lin Hao like at the beginning of the story? (No more than 5 words)
57.What did Lin Hao do to prepare for the contest? (No more than 10 words)
58.What does the word “strength” in Paragraph 2 most probably refer to here? (No more than 5 words)
59.How did Ms. Chen help Lin Hao during his speech? (No more than 10 words)
60.What lesson did the author learn from this experience? (No more than 25 words)
【答案】56.Very quiet and shy. 57.He practiced alone after school repeatedly. 58.A particular quality or ability. 59.By saying his lines with him clearly as support. 60.Perseverance isn’t always about doing it alone, sometimes, it’s about having the courage to accept help and let your voice be heard.

58.词句猜测题。根据画线词的下文““You just need to find the courage to show it.” Lin Hao must have taken her words to heart. (“你只需要找到勇气去展示它。”林浩一定把她的话放在心上了。)”可知,林浩深信陈老师的话,因此鼓起勇气报名参加了演讲比赛,可推知他相信自己有隐藏的特定品质或能力,希望借比赛展现出来,画线词意思应该是“特定品质或能力”。故答案为:A particular quality or ability.
59.细节理解题。根据第五段中“Suddenly, from the back of the room, we heard a gentle, clear voice. It was Ms. Chen. She wasn’t taking over, she was saying his lines with him, just loud enough to support him. (突然,从房间的后面,我们听到一个温柔、清晰的声音。是陈老师。她不是在取代他,而是在和他一起念他的台词,声音刚好可以支持他。)”可知,陈老师通过清晰地与他同步念台词来提供支持,从而帮助他。故答案为:By saying his lines with him clearly as support.
60.细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Ms. Chen’s simple act of support taught us all that perseverance isn’t always about doing it alone, sometimes, it’s about having the courage to accept help and let your voice be heard. 【答案】One possible version:
Dear Jack,
Thank you for your email! I’m glad to share with you how I use AI in my English learning journey.
I often use AI tools like DeepSeek and Doubao (豆包), which offer a variety of helpful features. For example, they can correct grammar mistakes, explain difficult vocabulary, and even help me improve my writing by offering more natural expressions. Some apps also have speaking practice functions that allow me to chat with an AI assistant, which really helps improve my spoken English.
These AI tools have made my English learning more efficient and interesting. I can get instant feedback on my writing and speaking, which saves time compared to waiting for a teacher’s reply. They also provide personalized exercises based on my level and progress.
However, I believe it’s important not to rely too much on AI. While it’s great for practice and quick help, real communication with native speakers or teachers is still necessary for deeper understanding and improvement.
What about you? Do you use any AI tools for learning Chinese?
Yours,
Li Jin
