On a sunny morning in 2001, Jim, a skilled diver and ocean lover, was diving as usual around Palm Beach in Florida when he spotted a giant tiger shark circling a few feet away. The shark, which he later named Emma, was clearly struggling in pain. Seeing Jim, Emma swam close to him seemingly quite on purpose. With great fear and curiosity, Jim checked and found a fishing hook in Emma’s mouth. Despite the obvious risks, he managed to pull the hook out, careful not to cause any further injury to the animal. Jim has since removed four other hooks from Emma’s mouth on several occasions and sometimes freed her from fishing lines or plastic bags. The two have become inseparable.
Every time Jim goes into the water in the area of Palm Beach, Emma comes around and rubs her head against him as a sign of affection(喜爱). It’s not the kind of behavior most people would expect from tiger sharks, which could easily tear a person apart. “When you suddenly come across a huge shark, it seems like it might end your life,” Jim said. “What makes Emma so special is that she’s so loving and affectionate. She’s not a mindless killer but a sentient(有感情的)animal just like cats and dogs.”
Emma will always recognize Jim every time he dives in her area even if he changes diving equipment. Over time, she has learned his hand signals—an invitation to get her head rubbed and Jim claims that she started acting like a playful dog who loves being petted.
“To have a connection that lasts the entire time you’re in the water is so moving and so influential. One of the best things that have happened to me is the discovery of the affectionate aspect of this tiger shark.” Jim said.
38.What might be the reason why Emma approached Jim initially?
A.To greet him. B.To seek assistance.
C.To ask for food. D.To make friends with him.
39.What makes Emma unique according to Jim?
A.Her enormous body. B.Her feeding ability.
C.Her high research value. D.Her pet-like character.
40.What can we learn from the text?
A.Emma can read Jim’s sign language. B.Emma has never attacked human beings.
C.Jim once saved Emma from a deadly disease. D.Jim has removed four hooks from Emma’s mouth.
41.Which can be the best title for the text?
A.A Diver and His Odd Friend B.An Exciting Diving Experience
C.Jim: A Person Devoted to Ocean Protection D.Palm Beach: An Ideal Base for Shark Watching

How to Exercise in a Healthy Way
Exercise plays an important role in our daily life. It helps us keep strong and energetic. However, lots of people exercise in the wrong ways. They may hurt their muscles (肌肉), feel sick or even face sudden health problems when doing sports. How can we avoid these accidents and exercise safely? 42
Rest well and keep safe when exercising.
A good rest keeps your body in good condition for exercise. 43 Exercising without enough rest will bring great danger to your body. Besides, when you feel uncomfortable during exercise, stop right away. Never push yourself too hard. The safety of your body always comes first.
Warm up and cool down properly.
If you start to exercise directly, your muscles will easily get hurt. You can walk or stretch (伸展) your body for a few minutes before doing sports. 44 You need to relax your body slowly.
45
Don’t exercise too much in a short time. For example, many students often do sudden and heavy exercise just before PE exams. It is not a good habit to do so. Instead, it’s a good choice to exercise for 30 minutes each time, three to five times a week. Only long-term regular exercise can make you really healthy.
In a word, exercising is important, but we should exercise in right ways. If we follow these suggestions, we can keep healthy and enjoy the fun of sports safely.
A.Don’t exercise when you are tired.
B.Keep exercising regularly (有规律地).
C.Here are some useful suggestions for you.
D.After exercising, don’t sit down or lie down at once.
E.Wear comfortable clothes when exercising.
How Technology Helps Emperor Penguins
With the development of science and technology, we have learned a lot about animals. Emperor penguins can grow up to 1.2 meters tall, and they are the 46 (large) of all the penguin kinds. In 2022, they were listed as endangered animals because the Antarctic sea ice that they live on is 47 (become) smaller and smaller. Now scientists are using high-technology to follow them and learn more about how 48 (protect) them.
One of the 49 (way) researchers are able to do this is by looking at pictures taken by satellites above the Earth. Large groups of emperor penguins can be seen from space. When scientists first started using satellites to look at the penguins, there 50 (be) only 28 groups. So far, scientists have discovered 66 groups.
Even using satellites, it is so 51 (difficult) to count how many penguins live in different groups. Scientists can improve population estimates (估计) by watching the area’s weather 52 (careful). Measuring the wind speed and temperature can help predict if the penguins gather closely together or spread apart across the ice. If scientists know what the weather was like when the pictures were taken, they can estimate how many penguins are pictured.
Scientists can also watch penguins’ movements by giving 53 (they) special electronic tags. A scanner is carried by 54 robot, and it can read information on the tags. The robot also uses AI to recognize the penguins. It moves very slowly so that it doesn’t make the birds stressed.
Daniel, one of the penguin researchers, hopes the technology 55 (lead) us to a “golden age of research”. Thanks to technology, we are seeing more things that no one has ever seen before.

C
【答案】38.B 39.D 40.A 41.A
38.第一段第2句指出:“The shark, which he later named Emma, was clearly struggling in pain. Seeing Jim, Emma swam close to him seemingly quite on purpose.”,结合后文Jim帮Emma取出鱼钩的情节,可知Emma最初靠近Jim是为了寻求帮助。
39.第二段第4句和第5句指出:“What makes Emma so special is that she’s so loving and affectionate. She’s not a mindless killer but a sentient animal just like cats and dogs.”,Jim将Emma 比作猫狗这类有宠物特质的动物,说明Emma的独特之处在于她类似宠物的性格。
40.第三段第2句“Over time, she has learned his hand signals-an invitation to get her head rubbed...”,明确说明艾玛能理解吉姆的手语,选项A“Emma can read Jim’s sign language”与原文表述一致; 选项B“Emma has never attacked human beings”,原文未提及Emma是否攻击人类,无依据;选项C“Jim once saved Emma from a deadly disease”:原文Jim救助的是“fishing hooks”造成的外伤,并非“deadly disease”;第一段第3句“Jim has since removed four other hooks from Emma’s mouth”,说明之前已移除一个,总共五个鱼钩,选项D“Jim has removed four hooks from Emma’s mouth”表述错误。
【答案】42.C 43.A 44.D 45.B
42.第一段末尾提出“How can we avoid these accidents and exercise safely?” C“Here are some useful suggestions for you.”
43.在“Rest well and keep safe when exercising.”部分,前句“A good rest keeps your body in good condition for exercise.”讲良好的休息能让身体处于良好状态,后句“Exercising without enough rest will bring great danger to your body.” A“Don’t exercise when you are tired.”
44.在“Warm up and cool down properly.”部分,前句讲热身(运动前活动身体),后句说“You need to relax your body slowly.”。 D“After exercising, don’t sit down or lie down at once.”
