It started when I was at Palomar College. At first, I just wanted to get my degree, so I preferred to stay alone. I thought I was 3 than everyone else, so I hardly talked to anyone in my class. At the end of my first term, almost everyone had made friends except me. I felt lonely. One day, I saw a classmate volunteering at a local charity event. It drew my attention and made me curious. I asked her 4 she did that. She told me 5 made her feel good to help others, which inspired me to do the same.
6 bigger change happened when I volunteered at the Vista Nursing Home. One old lady there who was badly ill had a good influence 7 me. Every time I came into her room, she was so happy 8 she regarded me as her daughter. Her real daughter 9 visited her, so I took her place. She let me learn that making others happy could make myself happy, too.
I think I’m much better than I used to be, and I hope I can remember these experiences.
They have taught me 10 about others.

Last year, around Labor Day, I read a “Happy Ad” in our local newspaper. There was a lady in a local nursing home, who was celebrating her 90th birthday and her family wanted everyone to know about it. It said that if you wanted to drop her a line, here was her address. So I did. I found a birthday card and dropped her a short note, wishing her a happy birthday.
A week later, someone knocked at my front door. I opened the door and found a middle-aged man standing on my doorstep. He introduced himself as the son of this woman to whom I had sent the card. He explained that he just wanted to drop by in person and thank me for sending such a nice card to his mom. Apparently (显然), like many older people, she did not receive much mail and was quite excited to receive mine. I just didn’t know what to say because I never thought he would come to visit me. I told him it was my pleasure and that I hoped his mom had enjoyed her birthday.
That year, I did not send out any Christmas cards, except to this lovely old lady in the nursing home. I just told her that I was thinking about her and hoped that she had a nice holiday. I sent her a holiday card and also a couple of notes in between. I just thought she might like to have someone write to her, to get some mail.

Hu Sha, as a doctor, was chosen as a candidate (候选人) for “China’s Good Doctors and Good Nurses” in 2025. She served with the 20th and 21st Chinese medical teams in Zimbabwe. In Zimbabwe, she helped run the China- Zimbabwe Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Center. At first, some local people were not sure about TCM.
She started medical services there for children with cerebral palsy Many of these children didn’t have good motor function or clear speech. Hu Sha offered free treatment, including acupuncture (针灸) and simple exercises. She also used simple TCM tools, such as cupping jars (火罐), as part of her treatment. In many communities in Tianjin today, a new kind of machine is appearing near the gates. It is called the “Smart Recycling Station”. This system is changing the way people deal with their old clothes and waste.
The recycling station has a high-tech screen and different doors for different items, such as old clothes, paper, and plastic bottles. When someone wants to recycle something, they can scan a QRcode with their phone or use a special card. Then, the right door will open automatically (自动地) .
Inside the station, there are sensors (传感器) and cameras. They can “see” and “weigh” the items. For example, if people put a bag of old clothes into the “Clothes” bin, the system will weigh the clothes and give “points” or money. These “points” can be used to buy daily things such as salt and tissues in a nearby shop. The system can send messages to the phones of workers in recycling companies when a bin is nearly full. In this way, workers don’t have to check every community, which saves a lot of time and energy.
“It makes recycling much more interesting,” says Wang Fang, a student from Tianjin. “In the past, my mother used to throw away old clothes or just leave them lying around. But now, she enjoys ‘selling’ them to the smart station. It helps keep our home tidy and protect the environment.”

To be a better person, we need to develop good personal qualities. These qualities help us live happily with others and become useful people in society. Here are five important qualities everyone should try to have. 1
This means telling the truth and doing the right thing. We should do what we say we will do. When we own this quality, people trust us because they know we are reliable. 2
It is the desire (愿望) to help others and show you care. It is more than just being polite. It is choosing to do something nice for someone. For example, you can share food with a friend or help an old person carry heavy things. 3
Life can be difficult. Imagine you study for a test but do not get a good grade. This quality means thinking about what went wrong carefully, asking for help if needed, and trying again and again until you succeed. 4
Sometimes, it is hard to do the right thing. This quality does not mean you are not afraid. It means you feel afraid but still choose to stand out. It takes courage to speak up for what is right or to help someone who is being treated badly. 5
This quality needs you to do the things you are supposed to do. If you are at school, you should finish homework on time. If you promise to meet a friend, you should keep your words. At home, doing chores without being reminded is also great.
By practising these qualities, we can become better people. We can also help make our families, schools, and communities better places for everyone.

Caring about what other people think about us is very common. However, we shouldn’t spend too much time paying attention to others’ opinions. So, how do we learn to ignore others’ views? 1 We should live for ourselves. This is easier said than done, but there are a couple of ways to help us.
· 2
First, we should remember that our biggest judges are ourselves. If we have a low opinion of ourselves, then we think that others feel the same way about us. A British therapist (心理治疗师) wrote that we should manage to love ourselves. For example, you can make a list of the things you’re good at and practice them every day. 3 These things can help you feel better about yourself.
·Focus on our strength and love.
4 We might want everyone to like us or to think we’re perfect. But the truth is, no matter how much we try, we can’t make everyone see us the way we want them to. People have different opinions, and that’s okay. By realizing this, we can learn to focus on our strengths and the things we love about ourselves. And they’re what truly matter.
·Be nice to others.
What’s more, however, we shouldn’t completely forget about how we act around other people. After all, nobody likes to have someone jump ahead of them in a queue (长队), for example. 5
A.Learn to love ourselves.
B.Why we care about others’ opinions.
C.The importance of being kind to others.
D.Well, the answer is about learning to value who we are.
E.So, the best thing to remember is to be nice to people around you.

Nowadays, volunteer work plays an important role in our society. However, people have different opinions about whether volunteers should get paid for their work. We did a survey about this online. Some agree, while others disagree. Here are the results.
Why do people think differently? Some of them also show their ideas.
Jane, a student
I believe volunteers should get some pay. As students, we are glad to help others, but we often have to spend money on transportation and meals. A little pay can solve our small problems and make it easier for us to keep volunteering. It also shows that our time and effort are truly valued. With suck support, more students will be willing to take part in volunteer work.
Mr. Brown, a father
Volunteers shouldn’t be paid. The true spirit of volunteering is to help others out of kindness and love, not for money. If teenagers work only for pay, they will misunderstand the meaning of giving. Volunteering should help them learn to be responsible and warm-hearted, not make them care too much about money.
Ms. Wang, a teacher
In my opinion, volunteers can receive some pay as basic support. They spend much time and energy helping people in need. It is reasonable to cover their transportation or meal costs. This shows respect for their hard work and encourages more people to join in volunteer activities.
Jessica White, a volunteer group worker
We strongly believe volunteers should get proper pay. It helps our group attract more volunteers and organize activities better. Many volunteers give up because of real-life difficulties. Proper pay makes volunteer work fair and long-lasting, so volunteers can keep helping more people in the long term.
Money should not be the purpose of volunteer work. The true meaning of volunteering is love, kindness and a willing heart to help others. Although basic support is understandable, we should not turn volunteering into a job for money. The real value is bringing warmth to others and making the world a better place.
1.What is the survey about?
2.What percentage of people think that it is necessary to pay the volunteers according to Chart?
3.Who holds a different opinion among these four people? What is it?
4.Why does Jessica support proper pay for volunteers? (One is OK.)
5.What do you think of paying volunteers for their work? Why do you think so?
1.(It/The survey is about) whether volunteers should get paid for their work. 2.90.3%(of people). 3.Mr. Brown. Volunteers shouldn’t be paid. 4.Because she thinks proper pay helps her group attract more volunteers and organize activities better. / Because she thinks proper pay makes volunteer work fair and long-lasting, so volunteers can keep helping more people in the long term. 5. It’s reasonable. Because if they get some pay, they will have a sense of satisfaction, which leads to better service results./...Because volunteers need money for transportation and meals when they work, and some student volunteers don’t have much money./... Because a little pay can solve their small problems and make it easier for them to keep volunteering./...
It’s unnecessary. Because volunteering means helping others without reward. If everyone volunteers for money, society will lose its warmth and trust./... Because volunteers may not truly understand the meaning of giving if they work for money./...Because money is not the purpose of volunteer work./...
1.文章开篇明确提到“We did a survey about this online.”其中this指代前文“whether volunteers should get paid for their work”,所以调查是关于志愿者是否应该因工作获得报酬,直接提取答案。
2.从图表“A Survey on Whether Volunteers Should Be Paid”中可以看到,共90.3%的人认为有必要给志愿者支付报酬。
3.Jane、Ms.
4.根据文中Jessica White的观点“We strongly believe volunteers should get proper pay. It helps our group attract more volunteers and organize activities better. Many volunteers give up because of real-life difficulties. Proper pay makes volunteer work fair and long-lasting, so volunteers can keep helping people in the long term.”

keep doing sth.
see sb. doing sth.

的项目”,“all Jane’s Lemonade for Love”是这个项目的名称,所以填called。
根据后面的than可知,这里要用比较级,much的比较级是more,more than表示“超过”,所以填more。

根据“The work is done”判定句子是被动语态,“by up to four workers”表示 “由多达四名工人(去完成)”,用介词by引出被动语态动作的执行者。
硬币被投进许愿池后,“用于帮助他人” 是将要发生的动作,因此用一般将来时will go,并且下一句游客说的话“this coin is not just staying there but will help needy people”也用一般将来时will help的形式体现了硬币将会帮助有需要的人。

Hello, everyone!
I am Li Hua. Today my topic is “Work as a Volunteer”. I am glad to share my volunteer story with you. Volunteering is really meaningful. It not only gives me a chance to do something helpful but also makes me understand the importance of love and responsibility.
Last month, my friends and I volunteered at a nursing home. The moment we arrived, we noticed that many elderly people suffer from loneliness. So, we actively chatted with them, maintaining eye contact and smiling warmly. Besides chatting, we taught them to do simple exercises and make some beautiful paper cuttings. We brightened their days and truly raised their spirits.

A.Be a helpful person
B.Be a responsible person
C.Be an honest person
D.Be a brave person
E.Be a hard-working person

F.You can also spend more time with people who love you and keep away from those who don’t.
G.Second, we can’t control the way other people see us, no matter how hard we try.

A group of middle school students in yellow vests gathered excitedly outside the Guiyang International Convention and Exhibition Center. They were chosen by the Guanshanhu District Media Center and would work as bilingual (双语) reporters at the 2025 China International Big Data (大数据) Industry Expo for the first time. Li Yihan and Wang Zini were among them and their English abilities were quite different. Li was good at reading and writing, but she was too shy to speak in public. Wang, however, was active and enjoyed talking with others, but she had a very small vocabulary.
To get fully ready for the big event, they took professional pre-job training and tried their best to improve their English. Li practiced speaking English every day. She read interview scripts (稿子) loudly in front of the mirror, recorded her voice and compared it with native speakers’. She also remembered some useful big data words. Wang took an active part in role-play activities and wrote down new words in a notebook to review them very often.
During the expo, they talked with international exhibitors (参展商) and reported on amazing new technologies like drone (无人机) soccer. Speaking English was not easy for the two 14-year-old students, especially when facing difficult technical terms But they quickly found a good way out. They changed the topic to daily life and cultural communication, such as introducing Guiyang’s local food. They were nervous at first, but the exhibitors’ warmth helped them relax soon.
1.Were Li Yihan’s and Wang Zini’s English abilities the same?
2.How did they deal with difficult technical terms when talking with international exhibitors?
3.What do the two students have in common during this whole experience?
4.Do you think it is necessary for middle school students to take part in such social practice activities? Why or why not? (about 30 words)
