Growing up, she spent countless hours on swim practice and competitions. Swimming wasn’t just a sport — it was her routine, her challenge, and her passion. Yet, behind her achievements was a hidden struggle. As a young athlete, Reese suffered from POTS, a condition that caused her heart rate to rise whenever she stood, often leaving her dizzy and tired. It was a threat not only to her swimming but also to her everyday life. Years of medical appointments and treatments eventually stabilized her condition, allowing her to continue competing and sparking a new curiosity about biomedical research. Initially, Reese was torn between pursuing a clinical career and a scientific one. “I’ve been the patient. I’ve been on the other side of medicine,” she said. “The goal is to improve quality of life, but there are many paths to get there.” The choice became clearer during her senior year at Tulane University in Louisiana when she spent the summer as a research fellow at Virginia Tech’s Fralin Biomedical Research Institute. Working in John Chappell’s lab, she studied blood vessel (血管) development in the brain, which helped her understand her heart condition. The experience encouraged her to focus on chronic (慢性的) conditions, hoping to help others who face similar uncertainties. Now, Reese joins Virginia Tech’s Translational Biology, Medicine, and Health Graduate Program. She values the program’s collaborative approach, where students from diverse backgrounds, including biology, neuroscience, and exercise psychology, learn from one another. “Each of us brings a different perspective, which helps tackle problems in new ways,” she said. For Reese, the pool taught discipline and perseverance, but her experiences with POTS shaped her purpose. From laps in the water to hours in the lab, she has turned personal challenges into drive to improve the lives of others. 24.What led Reese to focus on biomedical research? A.Her countless swim practices. B.Her training at Tulane University. C.Her experiences with POTS. D.Her interest in chronic diseases. 25.What does Reese value most about her current graduate program? A.Its sports-centered research focus. B.The cross-field teamwork benefits. C.Its down-to-earth research methods. D.The chance to work with professionals. 26.What’s the core of Reese’s life goal now? A.Winning sports competitions. B.Curing her own heart condition. C.Pursuing a teaching career. D.Promoting well-being of others. 27.What message does Reese’s story mainly deliver? A.Practice makes perfect. B.Turn lemons into lemonade. C.Well begun is half done. D.Together we stand, divided we fall. C It is no surprise that the English language contains such a wide variety of expressions and phrases including dogs, which have been constant partners with people for thousands of years. The observations of dog behaviors have inspired us to take their individual characteristics into our language. Did your roommates make a terrible mess of the dorm room while you were gone? You could describe this terrible state as “a dog’s breakfast”. This British phrase means a disorganized state of things or a bad mix of different things. It appeared during a time when people would feed their dogs leftovers from last night’s dinner or other food items they happened to have on hand for breakfast. The phrase creates such a powerful scene showing a complete mess if you truly picture it. Interestingly, the phrase “dressed like a dog’s dinner” is quite different — “someone who is overdressed or improperly dressed”. You would be “barking up the wrong tree” if you are following a mistaken or misguided thought or action. This term dates back to the hunt of raccoon (浣熊) with the help of dogs. From time to time, a raccoon fools the dogs, which crowd around a tree, barking loudly, not realizing the quarry has taken a different way. Many people even describe the weather by using the image of dogs. The “dog days”, dating back to ancient Rome, refers to the hottest days of the year in which we feel lazy or unable to make great efforts. It was the Romans who first noticed that the burning heat of the summer seemed to come with the appearance of Sirius, the so-called “dog star”, which was a part of the Canis Major (“big dog”) constellation (星座). But even the coldest nights have interesting idioms (习惯用语) and history with them. One Australian idiom describes the practice of sleeping alongside a dog for warmth during cold evenings — a very cold night might need more than one dog, so it is a “three-dog night”. While dog-related idioms are common in use in many people’s everyday language today, the stories and history behind the idioms may lead us onto a new exciting journey of exploration. 28.Why are there a large number of dog-related idioms in English? A.People summarized the ways dogs cooperate with humans. B.People’s constant observation of dogs inspired the idioms. C.Dogs are animals with special features favored by humans. D.Dogs’ characteristics are the main source of English idioms. 29.Which of the following may be described as “a dog’s breakfast”? A.A delicious meal. B.A messy kitchen. C.An unsatisfactory ending. D.An improperly-dressed person. 30.What does the underlined word “quarry” in paragraph 3 refer to? A.The raccoon. B.The tree. C.The hunter. D.The master. 31.What was the origin of the idiom “dog days”? A.Dogs liked to hang out in summer. B.The heat in summer got dogs barking. C.Dogs were Romans’ favourite animal partners. D.A star with “dog” in its name appeared at this time. D Most people in the Netherlands are convinced that their consumption patterns affect the environment. Many of them are looking for ways to reduce their footprint. However, the reality is more complicated, according to a research by Leiden PhD candidate Levon Amatuni, who studied car sharing and the reuse of phones. He used his background in computer science and mathematics to model and measure the benefits of such practices. His research shows users of car-sharing platforms reduce their impact by only 3 to 18 percent — much less than 51 or 37 percent claimed in previous research. This is caused by so-called “rebound effects”, which are rarely accounted for by companies or even researchers. For example, shared vehicles are replaced with new models more frequently than private cars. Additionally, the introduction of sharing schemes (方案) can encourage people to drive when they would have otherwise taken public transport. These rebound effects turn out to be highly influential. Amatuni also found users of sharing platforms don’t significantly reduce their driving. “And if they do, they often take buses and trains, which aren’t emission - free,” he says. While public transport is usually a better option, its impact is not negligible. So, this data must be included to make an accurate assessment. Similarly, Amatuni discovered that a second-hand phone only offsets (抵消) about one-third of a new phone’s production. Rebound effects are the cause. If people couldn’t sell their old devices, they would use them for longer. In other words, reuse both extends the lifetime of a device — by giving it a new owner — but also shortens it, as people tend to sell their newly bought devices sooner. Amatuni doesn’t want people to conclude taking small steps towards sustainability is pointless. “Our intentions are still what’s most important,” he says, “but meanwhile, people need to realise there’re no easy fixes.” He recommends prioritising overall consumption reduction rather than continuing current habits while trying to make them more efficient. 32.What is the focus of Amatuni’s research? A.The ways of reducing people’s footprint. B.The benefits of car sharing and phone reuse. C.The damage of public transport to the environment. D.The knowledge of computer science and mathematics. 33.Which of the following represents a phone rebound effect? A.Buying new phones often. B.Keeping old phones in use. C.Taking care of new phones. D.Selling used phones cheaply. 34.What is Amatuni’s suggestion on promoting sustainability? A.Stop eco - friendly habits. B.Increase production efficiency. C.Reduce total resource use. D.Seek easy solutions to eco-crisis. 35.What is the best title for the passage? A.Ways to Live a More Sustainable Life B.Rebound Effects Hidden in Green Practices C.New Research on Shared Cars and Used Phones D.How to Accurately Measure Environmental Impact Ever feel like there’s never enough time these days? Chased by deadlines and bombarded with (狂轰滥炸) social media content, we feel that each day is full. 36 .This widespread feeling is what experts call “time poverty.”   The idea of “time poverty” is not new. First introduced in 1977, it has attracted much attention over the decades, according to Forbes. Cassie Holmes, a US social psychologist, tracked the time data of tens of thousands of people and found that when people have less than two hours of free time each day, their life satisfaction drops. 37 . We live in a world that values productivity. People are expected to be efficient, take on different roles and deal with many tasks. This can lead to a lack of personal time, hurting the individual’s well-being. 38 A University of Chicago study found that over the past decade, people’s participation in community activities had dropped by 58 percent, and the chance of neighbors knowing each other had fallen from 75 percent in the 1980s to only 22 percent in 2022. 39 Holmes pointed out that when people have over five hours of free time a day, they may start to feel a loss of purpose and achievement. Those who have two to five hours of free time each day report the highest levels of happiness and satisfaction. Time is a resource that is equally shared among all people. The key lies not in how much time we have, but in how we use it. 40 Exercising or volunteering can help you make the most of your time and give you a sense of achievement. A.Make a strict schedule for everyday activities. B.It can also cause a crisis in social relationships. C.They may even experience anxiety and burnout. D.You should reduce workload and social arrangements. E.Try engaging in meaningful activities to enrich your life. F.More free time does not necessarily mean greater happiness. G.However, on reflection, we may still feel a sense of emptiness. At around 3 p.m. on Monday, Erin Wilson stopped at a picnic area along Highway 299. That puzzled me. Charlotte loved to sing. She sang in the shower and the car and just about everywhere else, despite her struggles with high pitch (高音). Now she could carry a tune a bit better than last year, but I didn’t think she’d improved enough yet to sing a solo. Reminding myself that all things are indeed possible in grade school, I chose not to question her confidence. I soon learned that my two other daughters in 11th grade, Monica and Corina, were also to perform in a different Christmas program on the same night. They were skilled singers and piano players. This time, they were giving a piano performance that night, an hour later than their younger sister. The three girls practiced everyday at home, filling our room with singing, piano music and laughter. Sometimes the two teenagers would give Charlotte some tips on improving her pitch, and could even accompany her singing “Silent Night” on the piano in a very short time. Knowing them well-prepared, I looked forward to the Christmas programs this year. The big day finally came, and I came to school to watch Charlotte’s performance with delight. However, things went wrong. Shortly after dropping her backstage, she found me in the hall, eyes filled with tears. Her teacher explained there had been a misunderstanding — Charlotte was not picked to sing a solo. Heartbroken, she asked to leave. Though upset, I focused on comforting her. Teenagers notice everything. When we arrived at their auditorium earlier than scheduled, Monica and Corina quickly realized something was wrong. When I explained the situation, they showed sincere sympathy. “Come with us, Charlotte. You can see backstage and meet our friends.” The invitation beat any flavor of ice-cream, and Charlotte gladly accepted and went with them. I sat with the audience and waited, until the host announced my girls’ names. Monica and Corina walked onto the stage, gesturing Charlotte to join them. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I went to the backstage and found the three girls chatting happily. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 试卷第1页,共3页 试卷第1页,共3页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 绝密★考试结束前 2026年高考第三次模拟考试 英语 (考试时间:120分钟 试卷满分:150分) 注意事项: 1. 1.Who made the cake? 根据第二段中“Years of medical appointments and treatments eventually stabilized her condition, allowing her to continue competing and sparking a new curiosity about biomedical research. (多年的医疗检查和治疗最终使她的病情得到了控制,使她能够继续参加比赛,并激发了她对生物医学研究的新兴趣。)”可知,Reese的POTS患病经历使她专注于生物医学研究。故选C项。 25.细节理解题。根据第四段中“She values the program’s collaborative approach, where students from diverse backgrounds, including biology, neuroscience, and exercise psychology, learn from one another. (她非常赞赏该项目的协作模式,因为在这个模式中,来自不同背景的学生,包括生物学、神经科学和运动心理学专业的学生,能够相互学习。)”可知,她最看重的是跨领域团队合作的好处。故选B项。 26.细节理解题。根据最后一段“For Reese, the pool taught discipline and perseverance, but her experiences with POTS shaped her purpose. From laps in the water to hours in the lab, she has turned personal challenges into drive to improve the lives of others. (对于Reese来说,游泳池教会了她自律和坚韧的品质,但她与POTS的斗争经历则塑造了她的目标。从在水中的游动到在实验室里的长时间工作,她将个人的挑战转化为推动改善他人生活的动力。)”可知,她当前人生目标的核心是促进他人的福祉。故选D项。 27.推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是最后一段中的“From laps in the water to hours in the lab, she has turned personal challenges into drive to improve the lives of others. A. 根据第一段“The observations of dog behaviors have inspired us to take their individual characteristics into our language. (对狗行为的观察启发我们将它们的个性特征融入我们的语言中。)”可知,人们对狗的不断观察启发了这些与狗相关的习语。故选B项。 29.细节理解题。根据第二段“Did your roommates make a terrible mess of the dorm room while you were gone? You could describe this terrible state as “a dog’s breakfast”. This British phrase means a disorganized state of things or a bad mix of different things. (你不在的时候,你的室友把宿舍弄得一团糟吗?你可以把这种糟糕的状态描述为“狗的早餐”。这个英国短语意思是事情杂乱无章,或者不同事物的糟糕混合。)”可知,“a dog’s breakfast”指的是杂乱无章的状态,选项B“一个杂乱的厨房”符合这一描述。故选B项。 30.词句猜测题。根据第三段“You would be “barking up the wrong tree” if you are following a mistaken or misguided thought or action. This term dates back to the hunt of raccoon (浣熊) with the help of dogs. From time to time, a raccoon fools the dogs, which crowd around a tree, barking loudly, not realizing the quarry has taken a different way. (如果你遵循错误或误导性的想法或行动,那你就是“找错对象了”。这个术语可以追溯到在狗的帮助下猎浣熊。时不时地,浣熊会愚弄狗,狗会围着一棵树大声吠叫,却没有意识到 已经走了另一条路。)”可知,此处在描述猎浣熊的场景,狗围着树叫,却没意识到猎物走了另一条路,这里的“quarry”指的就是被猎捕的“浣熊”。故选A项。 31. 根据第四段“The “dog days”, dating back to ancient Rome, refers to the hottest days of the year in which we feel lazy or unable to make great efforts. It was the Romans who first noticed that the burning heat of the summer seemed to come with the appearance of Sirius, the so-called “dog star”, which was a part of the Canis Major (“big dog”) constellation (星座). (“三伏天”可以追溯到古罗马,指的是一年中最热的日子,在这些日子里我们会感到懒惰或无法付出很大的努力。是罗马人首先注意到,夏天的酷热似乎随着天狼星的出现而到来,天狼星被称为“狗星”,是大犬座(“大狗”)星座的一部分。)”可知,“三伏天”这个习语的起源是一颗名字中有“狗”的星星在这个时候出现。故选D项。 D Most people in the Netherlands are convinced that their consumption patterns affect the environment. A.Ways to Live a More Sustainable Life B.Rebound Effects Hidden in Green Practices C.New Research on Shared Cars and Used Phones D.How to Accurately Measure Environmental Impact 【答案】32.B 33.A 34.C 35.B 【导语】这是一篇说明文。 根据第一段“However, the reality is more complicated, according to a research by Leiden PhD candidate Levon Amatuni, who studied car sharing and the reuse of phones. He used his background in computer science and mathematics to model and measure the benefits of such practices.(然而,实际情况要复杂得多,据莱顿大学博士生莱翁·阿马图尼的研究显示,其研究内容涉及汽车共享以及手机的再利用。他利用自己在计算机科学和数学方面的专业背景,对这些做法带来的益处进行建模与评估。)”可知,阿马图尼的研究重点是汽车共享和手机重复使用所带来的好处。故选B。 33.细节理解题。根据第四段“Similarly, Amatuni discovered that a second-hand phone only offsets (抵消) about one-third of a new phone’s production. Rebound effects are the cause. If people couldn’t sell their old devices, they would use them for longer.(同样地,阿马图尼发现,二手手机仅能抵消新手机生产所造成影响的大约三分之一。这种反弹效应就是原因所在。如果人们无法卖掉旧设备,他们就会更长时间地使用这些设备)”以及第五段“In other words, reuse both extends the lifetime of a device — by giving it a new owner — but also shortens it, as people tend to sell their newly bought devices sooner.(换句话说,重复使用不仅延长了设备的使用寿命(因为设备有了新的主人),而且还缩短了其使用寿命,因为人们往往会更快地将刚购买的新设备出售掉)”可知,经常购买新手机体现了手机的反弹效应。故选A。 34. 根据最后一段“He recommends prioritising overall consumption reduction rather than continuing current habits while trying to make them more efficient.(他建议应将减少总体消费作为首要任务,而非继续维持现有的消费习惯,同时还要努力使其更加高效)”可知,阿马图尼建议减少资源总体使用量促进可持续发展。故选C。 35. 根据第二段“His research shows users of car-sharing platforms reduce their impact by only 3 to 18 percent — much less than 51 or 37 percent claimed in previous research. This is caused by so-called “rebound effects”, which are rarely accounted for by companies or even researchers.(他的研究显示,使用共享汽车平台的用户仅将他们对环境的影响降低了3%到18%——远低于此前研究中所声称的51%或37%。 Ever feel like there’s never enough time these days? 36.上文“Chased by deadlines and bombarded with social media content, we feel that each day is full.(被截止日期追赶,被社交媒体内容轰炸,我们觉得每一天都很充实)”说明人们看似忙碌充实,下文“This widespread feeling is what experts call “time poverty.”(这种普遍存在的感受就是专家们所说的“时间贫困”)”提到“时间贫困”。 37.上文“Cassie Holmes, a US social psychologist, tracked the time data of tens of thousands of people and found that when people have less than two hours of free time each day, their life satisfaction drops.(美国社会心理学家卡西·霍姆斯追踪了数万人的时间数据,发现当人们每天的空闲时间少于两小时时,他们的生活满意度会下降)”说明空闲时间过少的负面影响。 C选项中的they指代上文中“have less than two hours of free time each day”的人们,even进一步递进前文的“life satisfaction drops”。故选C。 38.上文“This can lead to a lack of personal time, hurting the individual’s well-being.(这可能会导致个人时间的缺乏,损害个人的幸福感)”说明时间贫困对个人的影响。 39.下文“Holmes pointed out that when people have over five hours of free time a day, they may start to feel a loss of purpose and achievement. Those who have two to five hours of free time each day report the highest levels of happiness and satisfaction.(霍姆斯指出,当人们每天有超过5小时的空闲时间时,他们可能会开始感到失去目标和成就感。那些每天有两到五小时空闲时间的人报告的幸福感和满意度最高)”说明空闲时间过多也有弊端。空处是本段主旨句,概括本段核心内容。所以F项“更多的空闲时间并不一定意味着更大的幸福。”符合语境。F选项点明本段核心观点,后文内容围绕其展开,解释空闲时间过多的负面影响,故选F。 40.上文“The key lies not in how much time we have, but in how we use it.(关键不在于我们有多少时间,而在于我们如何利用它)”说明合理利用时间的重要性。 所以E项“尝试参与有意义的活动来丰富你的生活”符合语境,E选项中的“engaging in meaningful activities”是对“how we use it”的具体说明,后文“Exercising or volunteering”也呼应了“meaningful activities”。 At around 3 p.m. on Monday, Erin Wilson stopped at a picnic area along Highway 299. She began walking her two-year-old sheepdog, Eva, along a path when a mountain lion 41 and attacked Wilson, who screamed — catching the 42 of her 2-year-old Belgian Malinois, Eva, who had been wandering ahead, immediately returned to 43 her owner. However, a small but effective change I want to share is to integrate a 10-minute daily walk into our campus routine. This change requires no extra equipment: we can walk around the campus after lunch, or take a casual stroll on the playground between classes. This simple habit brings multiple practical benefits. Not only does it help with food digestion but also prevents us from feeling sluggish, helping us stay focused in class. Beyond these immediate benefits, it’s a gentle start to a more active lifestyle. Stick to this simple routine, and you will gradually embrace a healthier body and a sharper mind, making every day more energetic and productive. 要求考生以“A Small Change for a Healthier You”为题,向校英文报“Healthy Living”专栏投稿,提出一个健康小改变,并说明具体做法与好处。 词汇积累 多种多样的:multiple→a variety of   好处:benefits → advantages 专注的:focused → concentrated 精力充沛的:energetic → vigorous 2. As high school students, we tend to believe that big changes are needed for better health. We high school students often hold the belief that big changes are needed for better health. 1】Not only does it help with food digestion but also prevents us from feeling sluggish, helping us stay focused in class.(运用了not only...but also... 2】Stick to this simple routine, and you will gradually embrace a healthier body and a sharper mind, making every day more energetic and productive.(运用了“祈使句+and+陈述句”的结构,同时运用了现在分词作状语) 第二节(满分25分) 67. Two days before her school’s Christmas program, my nine-year-old daughter Charlotte proudly announced, “I’m singing solo (独唱) ‘Silent Night’ “. 注意: (1)续写词数应为150个左右; (2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Monica and Corina walked onto the stage, gesturing Charlotte to join them. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ I went to the backstage and found the three girls chatting happily. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】       Monica and Corina walked onto the stage, gesturing Charlotte to join them. Charlotte stood there in shock, her eyes still wet with tears, too shy to move forward. The two sisters waved at her warmly and nodded encouragingly, and the audience also clapped gently to urge her on. Finally, she took a deep breath and stepped onto the stage nervously. As the soft piano tune flowed out, Monica nodded at her, and Charlotte opened her mouth to sing Silent Night. Her voice was small at first, then became steady with her sisters’ gentle accompaniment and harmonious backup singing. When the last note faded, the auditorium erupted into thunderous and lasting applause.       I went to the backstage and found the three girls chatting happily. Charlotte was talking animatedly, her face glowing with joy and pride, no trace of sadness left. Monica and Corina were listening with smiles, occasionally pinching her cheek and praising her for singing wonderfully. I walked over and hugged the three tightly, my heart filled with warmth and moved. Charlotte looked up at me, her eyes bright, and said softly, “Mom, I sang my solo, and it was amazing!” That Christmas night, the warm sisterly love turned a regret into the most precious and unforgettable memory in our hearts. 词汇激活 行为类 ①前进:move forward/step forward ②拥抱:hug/embrace ③使感动:move/touch 情绪类 ①害羞的:shy/timid/reserved ②快乐:joy/happiness/delight 【点睛】[高分句型1].
