There are many tiny wonders that human eyes can’t see. Thanks to photomicrographers (微观摄影师), we can see the amazing small worlds.
Zhang Yefei is one of the photomicrographers. In the past three years, the 42-year-old engineer from Jiangsu has shot (拍摄) the eggs of hundreds of butterfly and moth (蛾) species in his free time. His photo of moth eggs won him a top 20 award (奖) at the 2022 Nikon Small World Competition in October.
Looking for moth eggs is very difficult, because they are often really small. Zhang usually takes a magnifying glass during his trips to the wild. He uses it to look for the leaves with eggs on them.
To take photos of eggs, Zhang uses a microscope and some special tools. But a photo can only clearly show a small part of the egg. It usually takes 500 to 1,000 photos for Zhang to fully present an egg. Then, he uses computer technology to put all the clear parts in the right place. It often takes him about six hours to finish one photo, with the longest one taking 21 hours. “I'm not a full-time photomicrographer, so I don’t have enough time to shoot and make photos,” Zhang said.
Although it has many difficulties, taking photos also brings Zhang surprises. While he uses LED lights to help take the photos, the temperature can help the incubation (孵化) of the eggs. So he was able to see how a larva (幼虫) turns into a butterfly. “I’ll try and find out more interesting things about the small world and bring them to light,” Zhang said.
7. What will a photomicrographer probably take pictures of?
A. Stars. B. Moth eggs. C. Elephants.
8. Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A. Zhang Yefei won 20 awards at the 2022 Nikon Small World Competition.
B. It is easy for Zhang Yefei to look for moth eggs.
C. Zhang usually spends a lot of time making a photo.
9. Why does Zhang take a magnifying glass during his trips to the wild?
A. Because he likes collecting magnifying glasses.
B. Because moth eggs are very small and he needs it to look for leaves with eggs.
C. Because he wants to observe big animals better.
10. When Zhang saw how a larva turned into a butterfly, he felt ________.
A. surprised and happy
B. angry and sad
C. tired but excited
11. The passage is probably from________.
A. a magazine
B. a storybook

Jane Goodall, the English zoologist and world’s famous expert on chimpanzees (黑猩猩) visited China between November 11th and December 4th, 2024. She came to celebrate the 30th anniversary (周年纪念日) of her Roots & Shoots program inChina.
When Goodall was a child, she loved to read and spend time in nature. Her mother always encouraged her to ask questions and learn more. Goodall dreamed of seeing animals in their natural homes.
In 1957, when Goodall was 23, she traveled to Kenya, Africa. There, she met the famous scientist Louis Leakey. He was looking for someone to study chimpanzees to learn more about human history. Once he got to know Goodall, he knew she was the right person for the job.
Goodall went to Tanzania in July 1960 and began working at the Gombe Stream Chimpanzee Reserve. She quickly realized it was not easy to study chimpanzees. To get close to them, she spent months gaining their trust. She discovered (发现) that chimpanzees are smart animals and their lives are very similar to ours. She gave each of them a human name instead of using numbers. In October 1960, Goodall made an amazing discovery. She saw two chimpanzees using tools (工具) to get food. Before this, people thought only humans used tools. This discovery showed that chimpanzees are intelligent (有智力的) and social animals.
Throughout her life, Goodall has worked hard to protect both animals and the environment. She started the Jane Goodall Institute in 1977. In 1991, she set up Roots & Shoots program, which came to China in 1994, to encourage young people to take action to help the Earth. “If we all do our part to help, the world will be a better place,” she said.

Most of us know some simple geographical facts, like the highest mountain or the deepest ocean in the world. But for some surprising facts about our planet, you’ll have to read on!
____12____
When we think of deserts, we usually picture sand and camels (骆驼). However, in the science world, a desert is a place that gets less than 250 mm of water each year. Although Antarctica is mostly covered in ice, it gets only about 150 mm of water every year. So it’s in fact a desert!
Russia has 11 time zones(时区).
Russia is the largest country in the world. ____13____ It has an island (岛) called Big Diomede, which is very close to Little Diomede, an island in the US. Although the two islands are only about 4 km from each other, they’re in different time zones. So there is a 21-hour time difference between them!
The Dead Sea is getting smaller.
The Dead Sea is the lowest (最低的) place on land, and it’s very important in the world. ____14____It used to cover about 1,000 km², but now it covers only about 600 km².
Australia is wider than the moon.
Australia is about 4,000 km wide, while the moon is only 3,400 km across. ____15____
The earth may be over 4.5 billion years old, but it can still surprise us. It just goes to show what an amazing planet we live on!
A. And it covers many areas.
B. These facts are both amazing and funny.
C. This makes Australia wider than the moon itself.
D. Antarctica (南极洲) is the world’s biggest desert.
E. But it is getting smaller because of human activities.
D 13. A 14. E 15. C
下文提到“Although Antarctica is mostly covered in ice…So it’s in fact a desert!”,D选项“Antarctica (南极洲) is the world’s biggest desert.”
由小标题“Russia has 11 time zones”和前一句“Russia is the largest country in the world.”
上文提到“The Dead Sea is the lowest place on land…”,下文说“It used to cover about 1,000 km², but now it covers only about 600 km².”,E选项“But it is getting smaller because of human activities.”
由前文“Australia is about 4,000 km wide, while the moon is only 3,400 km across.”

根据前文“How happy you must be!” 若用nothing则与前文 “very rich, lived in a fine palace” 的描述矛盾。

根据前文“a sharp sword held up by a single horsehair”的情节,可知达摩克利斯意识到了死亡的危险,应选用danger。
根据后文“His face became pale. His hands shook.”

Octopuses are really special. They have eight arms, three hearts and no bones. They are smart too—they can change colors and shapes to hide from danger, and even make ink to protect themselves. But now they are facing big problems. Ocean pollution makes their home unsafe, and sometimes they are short of food.
