As we all know, whales are the biggest animal living in oceans. However, how long whales can live in fresh water has become a matter of some discussion because of several visits of whales to fresh water (淡水). The interest in this matter first became hottest in 1985 when Humphrey, the name of a humpback whale (座头鲸), succeeded living in the fresh water of the Sacramento River for several weeks before finally returning to the Pacific Ocean. The matter happened again in May of 2007, when a mother whale and her baby whale entered the Sacramento River.
Some experts say that it is uncommon to see whales in fresh water for more than a few weeks because most whales are built for saltwater environments. Scientists are not quite sure how long whales can live in fresh water because they can’t get the food they usually have in the sea. Besides, small cuts, for example, are easily cured (治愈) in salt water. Fresh water environments do not have the materials (材料) which are good for cuts.
Fresh water environments are also not natural for a whale’s swimming and other activities. Most whales swim in water that is at least 20 feet (6.1m) deep. Fresh water rivers may be only a few feet deeper than the girth (围度) of a whale’s body. This makes it more possible for them to be beached.
Many whales are migratory (迁徙的) animals by habit. Because they are not used to the route they take, whales can easily get lost. That’s probably why we have the chance to see whales in fresh water. Although it may be interesting to see whales in fresh water, whale lovers actually worry about the matter.
8. Why does the writer mention (提及) Humphrey in Paragraph 1?
A. To ask people to keep an eye on the protection of whales.
B. To tell when people became interested in the matter.
C. To give an example of the visits of whales to fresh water.
9. What does the underlined word “route” in the Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. 路线 B. 方式 C. 饮食
10. Why can’t whales live in fresh water for a long time?
① Because whales can’t get the food they want in fresh water.
② Because fresh water can’t help whales cure their cuts.
③ Because fresh water environments are not big enough for whales.
④ Because whales are easy to get lost in fresh water.
A. ①②③ B. ②③④ C. ①③④
11. What would the writer probably write about after the last paragraph?
A. The things people can do to see whales in fresh water.
B. The study on how long whales can live in fresh water.
C. The ways to help whales return to the oceans.

第一节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面的短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
Reading is an amazing and fantastic experience that only belongs to humans. Just by looking at words on a page, we can travel across time and space in our mind. We can walk in the shoes of people who lived thousands of years ago. We can make friends with the characters in books.
But let’s be real. Reading can be hard. That’s true when we’re tired, bored or faced with difficult words and ideas. Also, reading can be much harder for some than for others. Luckily, scientists have given us some advice about how to make reading easier. By following the advice, reading can be an even better experience.
First, read in print whenever possible. There are several reasons for this. One is that our eyes will probably not skip over (跳过) printed words. However, we do this more often with on- screen words. Also, reading on a printed page helps the brain make a map of the information in our mind. That map, in turn, makes it easier for us to remember details (细节).
When we have to read on-screen, we can try making the size of the words larger. Words are easier to read when the letters are not close together.
Finally, when reading something difficult, such as a difficult scientific article, we can use a good way. On the sides of a page, write down and explain new words in our own words.
36. When is reading hard for people?

第一节 (共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,根据短文内容回答问题。

37. Why do scientists advise people to read paper books?

【答案】例文
South China Tigers, also known as Chinese Tigers, are the oldest type of tigers in the world. They used to live in the mountains and forests in southern China.
South China Tigers usually give birth once every 3 to 4 years, and their lifespan in the wild is about 10 years. They are carnivorous animals and good at swimming.
However, South China Tigers are now in danger of extinction. The main reasons for this are that humans have destroyed their habitat and hunted them continuously.
To protect South China Tigers, we need to take action. We should stop humans from hunting them and establish more natural reserves to provide a safe living environment for them. Additionally, we should raise people’s awareness of protecting these rare animals and promote conservation efforts.
Only by working together can we ensure the survival of South China Tigers and preserve the biodiversity of our planet. Let’s take responsibility and make a difference for these magnificent creatures.
