Conflict (冲突) is a part of life, especially with friends and family during our teenage years. It can make us feel uncomfortable, lonely, or even unloved. If we don’t deal with conflict well, it can hurt our relationship. However, if we work together to solve the problem in a healthy way, it can make our relationship stronger. Here are some useful ways.
When conflict comes, it’s best to talk about it openly. Or things will only get worse, especially if both sides feel angry but don’t say anything. ▲ Instead, find a good time to talk calmly with the other person. This helps start a conversation rather than an argument.
When you’re describing how you feel or saying what you’d like to happen, you want the other person to listen to you. In the same way, when the other person is talking, it’s important not to interrupt but to pay attention to the other person, or you’ll never understand his or her thoughts. You should also notice the other person’s feelings, even if you feel very differently.
Dealing with conflict isn’t about one person winning and the other losing. It’s about finding a solution that’s acceptable to both sides. If you both stick to getting your own way completely, either the conflict will continue or you’ll end up falling out. Instead, work together to find a middle ground. This way will help you solve problems positively.
31. Why do we need to solve the conflict in a healthy way?
A. To make people accept our opinions completely.
B. To avoid any disagreement with others forever.
C. To improve the relationship between others and us.
D. To show that we are better at arguing than others.
32. Which of the following can be put into the “ ▲ ” in Paragraph 2?
A. It’s better to wait until people feel upset before speaking.
B. Avoiding direct conversation often helps reduce stress.
C. Remember that conflict can never be solved by shouting.
D. Raising your voice might make people listen more carefully.
33. What does the underlined word “interrupt” mean in the passage?
A. Stop someone when they’re speaking. B. Listen carefully.
C. Agree with others all the time. D. Express different opinions.
34. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Teenagers should avoid conflicts with friends and family.
B. Conflicts will completely end relationships if not dealt with properly.
C. Finding a solution acceptable to both sides helps solve conflicts positively.
D. Listening to others is more important than expressing oneself during conflicts.
35. What is the best title for the passage?
A. How to Win Conflicts with Others
B. Why Teenagers Often Have Conflicts with Family
C. Useful Ways to Deal with Conflicts
D. Conflicts Are Always Bad for Relationships
D
Sand, whether it’s on the beach or in the desert, seems simple and the same. But in fact, there are many differences between the two types of sand. Let’s explore these differences and learn about them.
Beach sand is usually made of small pieces of shells, coral, and other sea animals and plants. Over time, waves and the running water break these larger pieces into smaller ones, which then form the sand we see on beaches. Beach sand is often smooth and rounded, giving people a pleasant feeling. It’s also rich in minerals (矿物) and nutrients (营养物) that come from the ocean and land around it.
Because of the minerals, beach sand can support many kinds of sea life. These small animals live on the beach, feeding on natural matter. They are basic to the health of beach ecosystems.
Desert sand, on the other hand, is made up of tiny pieces of rock and stone that have been broken down by wind. It’s usually dry and not smooth, with sharp parts that can be uncomfortable to touch. Desert sand is short of the minerals and nutrients found in beach sand, making the desert a much harder environment for life to live in.
Because of the hard environment, some plants and animals have special body structures for living in deserts. For example, cactuses have developed thick leaves to store water, while animals like camels have developed to store water in their bodies.
Beach sand and desert sand are different in their formation, shapes, and the environment they are in. Beach sand is rich in minerals and nutrients, supporting different kinds of marine life, while desert sand is dry and poor, with few plants and animals able to live there. Understanding these differences can help enjoy the unique beauty of each type of sand.
36. Why does beach sand often feel smooth and rounded?
A. Because it is made of large pieces of coral.
B. Because waves and water break it down over time.
C. Because it is rich in minerals and nutrients.
D. Because it is formed along the way from the desert.
37. Which question is answered in Paragraph 4?
A. How does desert sand form and feel? B. Where do animals live in the desert?
C. Why is desert sand important? D. What animals are found in the desert?
38. How does the writer develop Paragraph 5?
A. By making comparisons. B. By giving examples.
C. By listing reasons. D. By offering suggestions.
39. What’s the structure of the passage? (P1=Paragraph 1...)
A. B. C. D.
40. What is the writer’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To describe the special beauty of sand places.
B. To introduce the challenges of living in deserts.
C. To show the differences between beach sand and desert sand.
D. To talk about the formation of both beach sand and desert sand.

What to Do When a Friend Asks for Advice
“What do you think I should do?” your friend asks, sitting beside you and waiting for an answer. This is not an easy situation. If you say something your friend disagrees with or something unhelpful, you might feel that you have let her down.
It’s natural to want to give a solution when someone comes to you with a problem. It’s also easy to just say, “Everything will be OK.” 41 But we often say that just because we feel we need to say something. We are happy that our friend came to us for help, even if we don’t really think we can help. 42 The answer is yes, but we should do it in the right way.
In fact, friends often just want someone to listen. Try to find out whether they are really asking for advice, or just want to talk about what is on their mind. 43 After listening, you can ask, “Would you like me to give you some advice?”
It is also important to be honest. If you can’t think of a way to solve your friend’s problem, just say so. Your friend will not be upset. You can still listen carefully and try to put yourself in her shoes. 44 You can ask yourself “What would I do if I were in that situation?” Later you can go back to your friend with some helpful ideas.
45 It is hard to listen to your friend repeat the same thing, but you cannot help. However, your friend will be thankful if you just let her “talk it out”. Just being there for her may be all you need to do.
A. Friendship is the most important thing to us.
B. This is not really helpful to your friend.
C. So is it always a good idea to give advice?
D. You can ask another friend for his or her ideas.
E. Sometimes a problem does not go away quickly.
F. Sometimes talking alone can make people feel better.
G. Then you can go away and try to think of something helpful.
