Australia decided to ban children under 16 from having social media accounts (账户). The new law started on December 10, 2025. It hopes to keep young people safe from online dangers, such as habits that are hard to break, online bullying (霸凌) and so on.
Big apps such as Instagram, TikTok and YouTube must check users’ ages. If they find someone under 16, they will ban that account. Companies that fail to follow the rule could be fined (罚款) up to 49.5 million Australian dollars.
To check a user’s age, apps may ask for a short video selfie (自拍) or an ID card. If an account is closed because the user is under 16, it can usually be opened again when the users turn 16.
Many parents are happy about the law. They think it will protect children and encourage them to play outside or do other healthy activities. However, some people who work with teenagers are worried. They say teenagers might try other apps that are less safe, or find ways to break the rules. This could put them in more danger. Some experts say it is like a “whack-a-mole’ (打地鼠) game—when you stop one app, young people just move to another one.
Many countries are watching Australia to see what happens. The key question still remains: Can such a ban really make the internet safer for the young?
26. What is the main purpose of Australia’s new law?
A. To help social media companies make more money.
B. To stop all people from using social media.
C. To protect young people from online dangers.
D. To encourage teenagers to use more apps.
27. What does the underlined word “ban” mean in Paragraph 2?
A. allow B. stop C. encourage D. support
28. Which of the following is TRUE according to Paragraph 3?
A. Only one way is used to check users’ age.
B. The closed accounts can be opened again when the user turns 16.
C. The closed accounts can never be opened again.
D. The closed accounts can be opened again at any time.
29. Why are some people worried about the new law?
A. Because it costs too much money.
B. Because teenagers might use less safe apps instead.
C. Because it encourages teenagers to play outside too much.
D. Because it is too strict for parents.
30. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Online Dangers for Teenagers in Australia
B. Australia’s New Social Media Law for the Young
C. How to Use Social Media Safely for Kids Under 16
D. People’s Different Ideas About Social Media Apps
