One of the best parts of autumn is its beautiful colours. Normally green leaves turn into red, orange, yellow and finally brown. This is called “leaf phenology”, and many people look forward to it every year. However, because of climate change, autumn is changing.
According to a study published earlier this year, the season length is growing, meaning that it is taking longer for leaves to change their colours. And this is not the only way that climate change is damaging the season.
“Trees are holding onto their leaves longer,” explained Dr. Howard Diamond, a senior climate scientist. “In my own neighbourhood, I can remember that the leaves would drop a lot sooner 20 years ago than they do now. This is a personal observation (观察), but research actually supports this phenomenon we’re witnessing.”
Climate change isn’t just causing the leaves to change later. We can also expect later frosts (霜冻) according to Dr. Michael E. Mann, a professor of the University of Pennsylvania. Mann said, “That means mosquitoes (蚊子) and pests remain active for a longer time in autumn, posing a greater health risk to human beings.”
If there is any good news at all, though, we may be able to stave off this development. Mann pointed out that if humans reduce their carbon dioxide emissions, they can still prevent the worst effects of climate change from affecting them during the autumn months. “A new study recently provides further evidence that surface warming will likely stop after carbon emissions reach zero,” Mann stated in his recent comment for Live Science.
1. Which of the following is one of the effects of climate change in autumn?
A. The season length is becoming shorter. B. Leaves are changing their colours earlier.
C. Leaves are staying on the trees for a longer time. D. There are more frosts in autumn.

A. Mosquitoes will disappear completely if there are earlier frosts.

D. The longer mosquitoes and pests are active, the more dangerous they are for people.

“As China’s cultural influence grows in Turkey, Go is following the same path (道路).” Kurter said.

That morning, the doctor arrived later than before. He was surprised to see Colin sitting on the sofa, reading a book and talking to Mary.
“So, you were ill last night, Colin,” the doctor said. “I’m better now,” Colin answered. “I’m going out in my wheelchair (轮椅) if it is fine.”
The doctor left without saying anything else. That night Colin slept well. He dreamt about the garden again, and Dickon and its animals.
Early the next morning, Mary ran into his room, “Dickon is here with his animals!” she cried.
Just then Martha opened the door. “Dickon and his animals are here, sir,” she said, Colin looked very excited.
Dickon came in. The new-born lamb (羔羊) was in his arms and the little red fox walked next to him. A bird sat on his left shoulder and a squirrel sat on the other. Another squirrel was looking out of his coat pocket. Colin stared as Dickon gave him the new-born lamb.
“What does it want?” cried Colin. “It wants its mother,” said Dickon, smiling. He took a baby’s bottle from his pocket and the lamb drank some milk, then it fell asleep. Colin and Mary asked Dickon questions about flowers’ names. He knew exactly which ones were already growing in the secret garden. “I’m going to see them,” cried Colin. “I can’t believe it!”
The next day, Dickon pushed Colin’s wheelchair slowly and carefully. Mary walked next to it. They went across the lawn. Then Dickon stopped pushing the chair.

Blind boxes have become very popular toys in China. The idea is simple: the buyers will not know which toy it is until they open the boxes, so it’s a bit like gambling (赌博). You may feel happy if you get the things you want, but more often, you can’t get what you like. People spend lots of money on their luck.
Pop Mart is a famous company (公司). But it began as a small shop in Beijing’s Zhongguancun area. At first, it sold different kinds of products. Later, the company found that toys were the most popular and best-selling products. They thought selling toys might be the best way.
The idea for blind boxes was from Gashapon (扭蛋机) in Japan, which sells blind toys. Each toy inside Pop Mart’s blind boxes costs only about 2 dollars, but they sell for around 8 dollars each. This brings the company a lot of money. Pop Mart had around 6.3 billion yuan in revenue (收入) in the year of 2023, 1.7 billion yuan more than that in 2022.
Nowadays, young people really like this kind of toy. Some buyers have collected over 1,000 dolls. In their eyes, the dolls are symbols of their personalities, or they just want to share something cute.
__▲__ Some toys are hard to get, so people sell them at higher prices in the second-hand markets. Some countries make rules to manage the selling of blind boxes, and they work out well. These rules help to stop over-marketing and protect buyers, especially kids, from buying things without thinking and being cheated.
To keep growing, Pop Mart needs to keep making something new and sell more toys. Labubu was a big success. The founder wishes that Pop Mart can be a world-famous company like Disney one day.
1. Why are blind boxes so popular in China?
A. Because they are very cheap toys for everyone.
B. Because they are the best-selling products in all shops.
C. Because people always get the toys they want from the boxes.
D. Because buyers enjoy the feeling of not knowing what’s inside.
2. Which of the following can show the revenue of Pop Mart in 2022 and 2023?
A. B.
C. D.
3. Which sentence should go in the __▲__ in Paragraph 5?
A. In fact, blind boxes are toys with no special things.
B. However, the blind boxes are as hard to stop as gambling.
C. Moreover, many young people think blind boxes are easy to collect.
D. Therefore, Pop Mart plans to create more new characters in the future.
4. What can we infer (推断) from the passage?
A. People can’t buy blind boxes outside Beijing.
B. Pop Mart will surely become as famous as Disney in the future.
C. Young people will stop buying blind boxes because of the price.
D. Pop Mart needs to create more new things for its development.

Andrew Holleman, a 12-year-old boy, loved playing in the open land near his home, as it’s a perfect place to get close to nature. He often saw red foxes running in the woods, wood turtles moving slowly by the water, and even rare flowers blooming quietly in the grassland. Andrew enjoyed every peaceful moment there and deeply understood the close connection between all living things.
Suddenly, a new plan broke everything! — Many houses would be built in the open land. The plan meant cutting down a large number of trees, removing all plants, and covering the land with hard ground.
Andrew felt sad and worried. He was afraid that destroying the land would make local animals lose their only home, some animals might even die without food and cover. So Andrew clearly wrote down all his research on the area and how the plan would harm the local ecosystem. Then he wrote to local officials, contacted reporters, and encouraged his neighbors to join him in opposing (反对) the plan.
Andrew was only 12, but he showed great abilities beyond his years. Every afternoon after school, he visited every house to ask people who were against the plan to sign their names. In just one month, he got support from many people.
In the end, the open land remained a safe home to local living things. Andrew felt proud to make a big difference to protecting the environment.

2. What can we infer from Mann’s words in Paragraph 4?
A. Mosquitoes will disappear completely if there are earlier frosts.
B. Later frosts in autumn are good for people’s health.
C. People should take measures to kill mosquitoes and pests in autumn.
D. The longer mosquitoes and pests are active, the more dangerous they are for people.
3. What does underlined phrase “stave off” probably mean in Paragraph 5?
A. Make something happen faster. B. Stop something from happening.
C. Change something completely. D. Let something develop naturally.
4. What is the writer’s purpose in writing this passage?
A. To tell readers about the beautiful colours of autumn.
B. To introduce the research of Dr. Howard Diamond and Dr. Michael E. Mann.
C. To show how climate change is affecting autumn.

5. Which of the following is the best structure of the passage?

The doctor left without saying anything else. That night Colin slept well. He dreamt about the garden again, and Dickon and its animals.
