When planning a trip, culture and history often top the list. Beijing in 2026 offers travelers fresh ways to explore these aspects in this most culture-rich capital.
For starters, the Beijing Central Axis has been recently added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. This nearly five-mile strip is home to imperial buildings and gardens. A new sightseeing bus now makes it easier to view the highlights, including the Temple of Heaven, the Forbidden City, and the Drum and Bell Towers. They are all stunning examples of ancient Chinese city planning.
More imperial history awaits at the Ming Tombs. A project is underway to gradually open all 13 tomb complexes to the public. The tomb of Emperor Chongzhen was among the first three to open, with more to come as soon as 2026.
In the mountains north of the city, the Great Wall has become a new star of Beijing’s nighttime economy. Sections like Mutianyu and Juyongguan now offer warm-weather after-dark tours, with the wall beautifully lit up. South of Beijing, a new hiking trail has been built at Zhoukoudian, where the bones of Peking Man were discovered.
Finally, travel around the city are getting easier. Visa-free stays have been extended, and foreigners can now use their credit cards to take the Beijing Subway. Some Chinese smartphone apps also offer English interfaces, making exploration smoother than ever.
1. What is the Beijing Central Axis best known for according to the passage?
A. Its modern shopping malls.
B. Its imperial buildings and gardens.
C. Its nighttime light shows.
D. Its hiking trails and natural scenery.
2. What new experience does the Great Wall offer in warm weather?
A. It allows tourists to stay overnight.
B. It provides guided tours to the tombs.
C. It is open for after-dark visits with lights.
D. It serves as a new hiking trail for visitors.
3. Where is this passage most likely to be taken from?
A. A personal diary.
B. A travel guidebook or website.
C. A cooking magazine.
D. A government notice.

Artist Craig Greco was watching Super Bowl nervously. But while most people focused on the football, Greco’s eyes were fixed on the kicker’s shoes. After all, they had a custom design he had created for the big game.
Painted in layers of bright gold and red, the shoes showed Greco’s skill in color composition — made even more amazing by the fact that the artist is color blind. Greco doesn’t let his color blindness limit his creativity, however. Instead, he bravely challenges himself to create one-of-a-kind artworks that bring joy to everyday objects.
Greco’s path to becoming an artist is unusual. Though interested in art as a kid, he couldn’t see colors the way others could. He had a form of color blindness where reds and greens look like shades of brown and yellow. As he grew older, he put aside his artistic dream, yet something was always missing.
It was an unfulfilling job and an inspiring e-mail that reignited his creativity. Through a work email, he learned about a 3D chalk artist whose detailed drawings pushed him to start his own art journey. With new purpose, he taught himself art basics. He studied drawings, took online classes, and asked famous artists for advice. He also learned to match colors using formulas to make sure the color was always right, even if he couldn’t see it. Within six months, he was creating his own artworks and receiving commissions.
As his skills grew, so did his confidence. A lifelong Chiefs fan, he decided to contact players on social media, asking if he could paint their game-day shoes. Kicker Harrison Butker was the first to accept his offer. Because NFL players can be fined for wearing the wrong color, Greco had to do complex color matching to make sure the shoes were exactly the right shades. His attention to detail paid off, and soon other players joined Team Greco.
Greco believes artists can bring out passion through painting. “It’s an opportunity to bring happiness and life to an otherwise boring object,” he said.
While still creating custom shoes for players, Greco continues to expand his range, painting unique artworks on everything from roller skates to table tops. His advice to young artists: “See what you like, and when you find your passion, dive into it headfirst and don’t look back.”
4. Why did Craig Greco watch the Super Bowl so closely?
A. To check the color of his shoes.
B. To see his artwork on TV.
C. To support his favorite team.
D. To learn from professional players.
5. What does the author mean by saying Greco’s path was “unusual” in paragraph 3?
A. He started his art career very late in life.
B. He succeeded despite a visual disability.
C. He never received any formal art training.
D. He only painted on unconventional objects.
6. What can we infer about Greco from the way he learned to paint?
A. He valued practice over theory.
B. He preferred working alone.
C. He found creative ways to overcome limits.
D. He relied on talent more than effort.
7. What does Greco suggest young artists do in the last paragraph?
A. Paint on a wide variety of objects.
B. Find their passion and pursue it fully.
C. Learn from successful football players.
D. Focus on bringing joy to everyday items.

I get that parents worry about screen time. But speaking as a researcher studying the effects of screen-based experiences, screens can be a great tool for reading. Digital books give children unique opportunities to learn and improve skills through literacy apps. To that end, I am one of many researchers in this field who believe that digital reading should not be considered screen time in the traditional sense.
With the large number of educational technological products that lack research and good design, the million-dollar question is: What makes a digital story good for children’s learning? Over the past 20 years, researchers have identified specific design features and reading situations that make some digital books more educational than others. First, it’s crucial that digital books offer high-quality personalized reading experiences. With books that have AI-based text generators and a more open-ended design, children become multimedia creators, co-writers and co-illustrators of their own story universe. Second, digital books can significantly enhance the parent-child reading experience. The questions embedded (嵌入的) in digital books should model and expand what the parent might ask, and through this modeling, enhance the quality of parents’ talk around the book.
But as much as I support digital reading, the commercial turn in the development of ed tech worries me, particularly in relation to profit-driven design and misuse of children’s data. Like some social media, subscription libraries turn kids’ attention into a commodity (商品) through automatic book recommendations. These books are often tied to advertising clicks and exhibit low literary quality in their stories. Furthermore, there’s often no content oversight, allowing anyone to become a publisher, which can lead to the creation of biased or data-gathering materials targeting children. Generative AI has expanded content creation possibilities but also raised concerns about quality. In this regard, digital books, like all ed tech, need strict quality checks and improved collaboration between researchers and developers.
Anyway, the digital reading format has opened an exciting new research frontier. This includes using real-time data that teachers and other professionals can use to individualize how children learn to read. AI can be a good partner in supporting adults’ choice of texts, prompts and reading activities for children, provided it is trained with diverse data and valid reading models. As researchers’ calls for evidence-based children’s ed tech are being heard by governments and funders, I hope the past two decades of e-book research can deliver the advantages of digital books to all children. Like it or not, I hope you’ll see that, at least for reading, screens can be an amazing tool to teach your child to read.
8. What is the author’s attitude towards counting digital reading as screen time?
A. Supportive. B. Neutral. C. Cautious. D. Disapproving.
9. According to the passage, digital books contribute to ______.
A. more open-ended questions B. quality parent-child interaction
C. personalized design features D. changes in kids’ reading habits
10. What are the major threats to digital reading?
A. Profit-driven design and data misuse. B. The strict checks on the content.
C. The great number of advertisements. D. Low literary quality but high prices.
11. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To highlight the risks of screen time. B. To introduce some advances in ed tech.
C. To offer another view on digital reading. D. To present the benefits of reading online.
D
From an airplane, cars crawling down the highway look like ants. But actual ants — unlike cars — somehow manage to avoid the stop-and-go traffic. Researchers are studying their cooperative strategies to learn how to program self-driving cars that don’t jam up.
The free flow of traffic becomes unstable as the density(密度)of cars increases on a highway. At15 vehicles per mile per lane, one driver applying his brake can cause a wave of congestion(拥挤). “It’ s a kind of phase transition(相变),” like water turning from a liquid to a solid form, says Katsuhiro Nishinari, a mathematical physicist.
His previous research had shown that ants can maintain their flow even at high densities. So what’s their secret? In a recent study, researchers found that the ants travel in groups of three to twenty that move at nearly constant speeds while keeping distances between one another — and they don’t speed up to pass others.
Human drivers at rush hour rarely follow such rules. “We’ re maximizing the interests of individuals, which is why, at a given point, you start to have a traffic jam,” says study co-author Nicola Pugno. But self-driving cars, if they one day become popular, would share information with nearby cars to make good use of traffic flow — perhaps, the researchers suggest, by prioritizing(优先考虑)constant speeds or by not passing others on the road.
Ants can do numerous things that self-driving can’t, Pinter Wollman points out. Ants can create a trail as wide as they like, unlike drivers stuck on highways. The insects do sometimes jam up when trapped in tunnels, but to keep things moving, “they’ ll find a way to walk on the ceiling,” she says. Plus, ants don’t crash; they can literally walk over one another.
Today’s drivers can learn at least one thing from ants, Nishinari says, “by leaving room between their car and the one ahead, drivers can absorb a wave of braking in dense traffic conditions that would otherwise be amplified(增强)into a traffic jam.”
12. What enables ants to keep smooth traffic flow even at high densities?
A. Central command system. B. Cooperative group interaction.
C. Quick speeding-up ability. D. Advanced navigation (导航) tools.
13. How could self-driving cars potentially copy ants’ traffic strategies?
A. Road expansion. B. Complete avoidance of braking.
C. Inter-vehicle data sharing networks. D. Prioritizing top speed achievement.
14. In which aspect are ants different from self-driving cars?
A. Travelling in groups of 3 to 20. B. Traffic rule observation.
C. Computer-controlled decision making. D. Flexible navigation and crash avoidance.
15. What would be the most appropriate title for the text?
A. The Psychology Behind Human Traffic Congestion.
B. Technical Barriers in Autonomous Vehicle Networks.
C. Ants vs. Humans: Evolutionary Comparisons.
D. Ants’ Amazing Traffic Rules: A Guide for Driverless Cars.

【答案】4. B 5. B 6. C 7. B

【答案】8. D 9. B 10. A 11. C

【答案】12. B 13. C 14. D 15. D

By winter’s end, I could skate slowly and with confidence. I learned that fear is a wall you can climb. The joy was in the courage to try and the process of learning, not in being perfect. I understand that on the other side of fear, there is often happiness waiting for us.
Possible version II:
The Admirable Quality in Me: Facing Fears, Finding Joy
Learning to play the guitar was my toughest challenge. My fingers hurt badly from the steel strings, and I was afraid of failing in front of my classmates.
