In both Africa and Asia elephants are being threatened by changes in their natural habitats. People are moving into the elephants’ habitats and endangering their survival. In the country of Sri Lanka, there is one place where elephants are not only protected but also respected. It is called Elephant Transit Home (ETH).
Set up in 1995, the ETH aims to protect and care for baby elephants that are found injured or living without their mothers in the wild. Every year about 30 baby elephants in Sri Lanka need help. Many are brought to the ETH. There they are given food, shelter, and medical care. Most importantly, they are given the chance to be with other elephants and become part of a herd.
A day at the ETH begins early in the morning when the baby elephants are given their first feeding of milk. During the day, each baby will drink an average of 13 gallons of milk. Older elephants are fed mostly coconut leaves and other native plants. There are no boundaries in the area for the baby elephants as they have the freedom to walk wherever they want. The cost of caring for the baby elephants is high. The ETH spends about $125,000 each year on powdered milk for the baby elephants.
At the ETH, workers try to reduce human connections with the elephants. They also try to increase bonds (联系) between the elephants. It usually takes three years for a baby elephant to be set free into its natural habitat. The elephants are sent back to the wild together with other orphans with whom they have bonded. This program helps them return to the wild as members of a herd that will communicate with each other and take care of each other.
The ETH is considered as one of the best animal protection sites in the world. Not only are the elephants cared for, but they are treated with respect. Most importantly, they go back to live in the wild, where they belong.

China is recognized as a world leader in the development of artificial intelligence and facial recognition systems. A Chinese company says it has created a new facial recognition system that can identify people even if they are wearing masks (口罩). Engineers at the Beijing-based company say their system is the first to be created to effectively identify people wearing face masks.
The company told a news agency that a team of 20 people built the system in about a month. The system is based on existing technologies developed over the past 10 years. The process involved adding a collection of about 6 million unmasked faces and a much smaller collection of masked faces, the company said.
The company is now selling two main kinds of products that use the new technology. One performs “single channel” recognition, which is designed to be used at the entrances to buildings. The other product is a “multi-channel” recognition system that uses groups of surveillance (监视) cameras. It can identify individuals in a crowd of up to 30 people within a second.
“When people are wearing a mask that covers the mouth and the nose, the recognition rate can reach about 95%, which can ensure that most people can be identified,” said Huang, vice president of the company. He added that the system’s success rate for people not wearing a mask is about 99.5%.
However, the new system struggles to identify people wearing both a mask and sunglasses. “In this situation, all of the key facial information is lost. In such cases recognition is graunchy,” Huang said.
People respond (响应) differently to the new technology. While some citizens have been against using such tools, the majority have accepted the technology as an effective way to reduce crime and catch criminals.
8. What did the company do to build the system?
A. It used the latest technology. B. It gathered many face images.
C. It employed hundreds of people. D. It added a collection of masks.
9. What can we know about the new system?
A. Its success rate is affected by cameras.
B. Its performance varies with the location.
C. It does better in identifying unmasked faces.
D. It can recognize groups of people in seconds.
10. What does the underlined word “graunchy” mean?
A. Tough. B. Specific. C. Normal. D. Different.
11. What is most people’s attitude towards the new system?
A. Supportive. B. Objective. C. Uncaring. D. Doubtful.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. A 11. A

【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第五段“However, the new system struggles to identify people wearing both a mask and sunglasses. “In this situation, all of the key facial information is lost.(然而,新系统难以识别同时佩戴口罩和太阳镜的人。在这种情况下,所有关键的面部信息都会丢失。)”可知,在关键信息丢失的情况下识别很困难。“graunchy”意思是“困难的”,与“Tough”意思相近。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“While some citizens have been against using such tools, the majority have accepted the technology as an effective way to reduce crime and catch criminals.(虽然有些市民反对使用这类工具,但大多数市民已经认可这种技术,认为它是减少犯罪和抓捕罪犯的有效手段。)”可知,大多数人对新系统的态度是支持的。

A couple in their 60s has travelled 12,000 miles across 16 countries from Britain to China — riding their bikes the entire way. Grandparents Peter and Chris Lloyd stepped on the long journey after deciding to “do something a bit different”. They traversed (横越) cities, deserts, mountains and everything between Europe, the Middle East and East Asia. The married couple of 37 years enjoyed themselves with delicious local food and spent most nights inside a tiny tent.
Peter, 66, said the moment they finally had a look at the famous Great Wall after a year and a half of cycling 30 miles a day was “really exciting”. At the end of their journey, the special pair didn’t fly home but instead chose to book a cabin inside a 400m-long container ship. The final part was a three-week voyage from Singapore across the Indian Ocean and into the Mediterranean Sea before arriving at Southampton.
“You never know what the day is going to bring. All you know is that you are going to get on your bike and cycle. Every day is an adventure and every day is new. Overall, the experience is absolutely unbelievable,” Peter said.
Peter and Chris initially (最初) set out to cycle from Britain in January 2017 but were forced home. They had cycled all the way to Hungary when Peter slipped on tiles and broke his leg. After seven months of recovery, the couple set out again in Britain. They finally arrived in China in November 2018.
Both Peter and Chris agreed that the best part of the entire trip was coming across the kindness of strangers along the way, many of whom invited the couple for food and drink. Chris, 64, said, “It was a wonderful experience, particularly wonderful because of the amazing people we met along the way.”

It was a sunny day. James Dotson was laboring in his garden when a loud, painful cry came from the woods behind his home. Realizing something wrong must have happened, he rushed towards the woods quickly. Soon he found an injured baby deer lying in a pit (深坑), one of his skinny legs bleeding. So weak was the little deer that it didn’t have the strength to move when Dotson approached. He squatted (蹲下) and stretched out his hands to the deer with great care and pulled it up.
As he carried the little deer towards their home, his daughter Maggie rushed outside and greeted her father with great excitement.
“Wow, a deer! What happened to him, Daddy?” asked Maggie.
“Well, the poor deer’ left leg is hurt badly.” Mr. Dotson said gently while walking into the sitting room.
Maggie followed her father to take a better look. “Poor little deer. Can we keep him, Daddy? And I will call him Paxton.”
“That’s a fine name for a deer, Maggie. We’ll do everything we can to help him,” smiled Mr. Dotson. “But we can’t keep him. He’s a wild animal.”
After Mr. Dotson carefully placed the little deer on the floor, he asked Maggie to go to the kitchen and get his medical bag. The little deer was in luck. He was being attended to by James Dotson, the local Veterinarian.
In a flash, Maggie rushed outside carrying his medical bag and a small carrot she had grabbed from the refrigerator. Maggie handed her father the bag and then placed the carrot by Paxton’s mouth, but the poor creature wasn’t interested. It was so unsettled, hardly able to eat anything and had such an air of sadness on its face. Maggie was worried and sad. However, her father convinced her that Paxton would be ok.

Paragraph 2:
Now it was time to send Paxton to where it belonged—nature.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Paxton was taken good care of in their home. Mr. Dotson attended to Paxton’s injured leg. Maggie never left home without feeding him first thing every morning. With time and effort, not only did the deer get his strength back, but he began to eat carrots right out of Maggie’s hand. Everything went on well until Mr. Dotson said it was time to set Paxton free. Maggie shook her head and refused. Patting her gently on the head Mr. Dotson said, “Paxton needs to be with his parents, just like you. You love Paxton and wish him happy, right?” Maggie seemingly understood and nodded her head.
Now it was time to send Paxton to where it belonged—nature. Paxton walked into the woods with Mr. Dotson and Maggie, running and jumping. Maggie kissed Paxton, “It’s time for you to reunite with your parents. I will miss you, Paxton.” Away ran Paxton quickly. Maggie couldn’t help crying. Suddenly, she found Paxton stopped in his tracks and looked back at her as if trying to convey deep, unspoken gratitude. After a few seconds, he disappeared into the woods. Bathed in the golden sunlight, and hugged tightly by her father, Maggie finally understood the true meaning of love.

A. Supportive. B. Objective. C. Uncaring. D. Doubtful.
D

After seven months of recovery, the couple set out again in Britain. They finally arrived in China in November 2018.
Both Peter and Chris agreed that the best part of the entire trip was coming across the kindness of strangers along the way, many of whom invited the couple for food and drink. Chris, 64, said, “It was a wonderful experience, particularly wonderful because of the amazing people we met along the way.”
12. What’s the couple’s purpose of taking the long journey?
