①It’s always easier to say “Yes” because most of us want to please other people. Somebody asks you to go for a party but you have tests the next day, or to help them although you are busy at the moment, or to join the activities you have no interest at all! Even though your heart is crying NO, you find the word “Yes” come out of your mouth. However, it usually results in anger — not only for the person who asked you, but also for yourself for not being strong enough.
②Lisa Messenger, the Collective Hub CEO, said in her first few years of business, many people asked her to talk over a coffee. Actually, she usually ended up having 20 coffee meetings a week and that stopped her from doing business because she didn’t have time to do her own work.
③Messenger finally learned to refuse like “No, I’m sorry, but I don’t have time.”. She believes if you say “Yes”, you will regret later. Or your heart will be filled with guilt, fear or anger because you feel bad for agreeing to do something you never want to. So you need to be brave enough to say “No” when you’re asked at first.
④Janine Garner, CEO of The LBD Group, believed we need to get very clear about our goals. Unless we work towards our goals, nobody else will care about our time. Garner said, “We may end up saying ‘Yes’ because we feel sorry for somebody who needs us. But we end up having that awful feeling in our heart. You can only achieve the best of you by stopping doing the things that take up your time and don’t add anything towards your goals. Take a good look at the time spent on others, which you really should spend on yourself.”
19. How does the writer begin the text?
A. By telling a story. B. By giving examples.
C. By making a survey. D. By asking questions.
20. What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Having 20 coffee meetings a week.
B. Being asked to buy coffee 20 times.
C. Talking with others without coffee.
D. Drinking 20 cups of coffee a week.
21. Which opinion would Janine Garner probably agree with?
A. Offering help is the key to make friends.
B. Helping others may make you successful.
C. You’d better say “No” bravely if necessary.
D. People who need us will care about our time.
22. What’s the structure of the passage?
A. B. C. D.

Every year, wildfires destroy tens of thousands of square kilometers of forest land. People lose their homes. Some are hurt or even killed. Smokejumpers help to stop this.
Smokejumpers are special firefighters. Some fires are in hard-to-reach places, such as in the middle of a mountain forest. These firefighters jump from planes or are lowered into those areas by helicopters (直升机).
When they arrive, smokejumpers first check the land and decide how to fight the fire. Their main job is to stop the fire from spreading until other firefighters arrive. Smokejumpers use shovels (铲子) or axes (斧头) to clear the land of burnable things. like dry grass and dead trees. They carry water with them too, but not a lot.
Although most smokejumpers are men, more women are joining now. The most important factors (因素) are height and weight. Smokejumpers in the U. S., for example, must be between 54 and 91 kilograms. This way, they don’t get blown away by the strong winds or get hurt when-they-land. Smokejumpers also need to know how to survive in the wild. In Russia, many smokejumpers know how to find food in the forest and can even make simple furniture from trees.
The work is dangerous, and the hours are long. But for these firefighters, smokejumping isn’t just a job. They love being able to jump out of planes, fight fires and live in the forest. Alexi Tishin is a 28-year-old Russian smokejumper. He says, “This is the best job for tough guys (硬汉).”
23. When a smokejumper reaches a fire site, what is the first thing he or she does?
A. Look for water. B. Clear the land.
C. Study the land. D. Fight the fire.
24. If you want to be a smokejumper, you must be ________.
A. a young man B. a university student
C. a Russian D. within a certain weight range (范围)

A. For the money. B. For the excitement.
C. For the country. D. For the medals.

A. Flying into Fire B. Dangerous Jobs
C. Forest Fire D. Challenging Yourself

My father, who was always drunk and angry, beat me more and more every day. He always locked the door when he went away and kept the key in this pocket. One day I found an old saw (锯子) that he hid in the roof. When I was alone in the house. I started to make a hole on the floor under the big table.
The next day my father said, "Huck, go to the river and catch some fish for breakfast. Quickly! And don't try anything. Remember, I'm watching you!"
While I was fishing by the river, I saw an empty boat nearby.
"A boat!" I thought happily, “This is my chance to escape. I'll hide the boat near some trees and use it tonight!"
When my father went to town that afternoon, I got my saw and started to work on the hole. It was late afternoon when I finished making the hole.
"I did a good job," I thought, looking at the hole. “Now I'll get my father's gun.”
I looked outside the window and there was nobody there. I quickly escaped through the hole. Then I ran into the woods to hunt a wild pig. Luckily, I found one. I shot it and took it back to the house and let the pig's blood fall on the wooden floor of the house. Then I pulled some of my hair out and put it on my father's axe(斧子) with some of the pig's blood. I took the pig's body outside and put it in a big bag with some rocks, and threw it into the river.
"This way people will think ▲ !" I thought. "They'll come and look for my body in the river." This idea made me smile.
I waited until it was dark and got into the boat and went to Jackson's Island. I knew about Jackson's Island because Tom, Ben, Joe and I had a lot of fun adventures there.

20. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. Tickets are quite expensive.
B. All of the money will go to a children’s hospital.
C. You can telephone to book tickets at 10:00 p. m.
1. Li Hai finished ________ first in the singing competition. It’s really ________ great success.
A. 不填;a B. the;不填 C. the; the D. 不填;不填
【答案】A
2. Sandy thought ________ necessary ________ to take some dancing classes.
A. that; for her B. it; of her C. that; of her D. it; for her
that那个;it它;for her对她来说;of her她的。“think it +形容词+for sb. to do sth.”
3. —Mum, I think I’m ________ to go back to school.
—Not yet, my dear. You’d better stay at home for one or two days.
A. so well B. so good C. well enough D. good enough
so well如此健康;so good如此好;well enough足够健康;good enough足够好。形容身体状况时要用“well”;同时“形容词/副词+enough to do sth.”
4. This exercise is _________ difficult _________.
A. so; that few of us can do B. so; that many of us can do
C. too; for any one of us to do D. too; for any one of us to do it
so +adj./adv.+ that“如……以至于……”,that后跟从句,从句中do后面缺少宾语,因此A,B都是错误的答案;too + adj. +for sb. + to do sth. 因为do 与主语This exercise构成动宾关系,所以do后面不能再跟代词it,故答案为C。
1. too + adj./adv. + to + v. He is too young to go to school.
2. adj./adv.+ enough to +v. He is old enough to go to school.
3. so +adj./adv.+ that从句,意思是“如……以至于……”,that引导的是结果状语从句。
例:He is so old that he can go to school.
too...to... =not …enough to =so...that +从句(否定句)
例:He is too young to go to school. = He is not old enough to go to school. = He is so young that he can't go to school.
5. — Mum, can you give me some advice on how to behave myself at the table?
— Well, I do have some advice. ________, please keep quiet while eating.
A. In all B. Of all C. At all D. Above all
【答案】D

In Russia, many smokejumpers know how to find food in the forest and can even make simple furniture from trees.
The work is dangerous, and the hours are long. But for these firefighters, smokejumping isn’t just a job. They love being able to jump out of planes, fight fires and live in the forest. Alexi Tishin is a 28-year-old Russian smokejumper. He says, “This is the best job for tough guys (硬汉).”

She spent much effort and time checking historical records and discussing the details with experts(专家).
Besides, she also travels abroad to tell the stories of Chinese kites and the ways they are made. Since the 1990s, she has been to many other countries, including Germany, Australia, the US and New Zealand.

Through this experience, I learned how to communicate better with children and became much more patient. I realized that volunteering is not only about helping others but also about growing and improving myself.
