The Beauty of Jiuzhaigou
Jiuzhaigou, located in Sichuan Province, is one of the most beautiful natural scenic spots in China. It was listed as a World Natural Heritage Site in 1992, and it is famous for its colourful lakes, waterfalls and snow-capped mountains.
The name “Jiuzhaigou” means “the valley of nine Tibetan villages”. There are nine traditional Tibetan villages in the valley, and the local people live in harmony with nature. The most amazing part of Jiuzhaigou is its lakes. The water of the lakes is in different colours—blue, green, turquoise and even red. The colours change with the light and the season, which makes the lakes look like precious gemstones. The reason for the colourful water is the special minerals and algae in the lake bed, which reflect the sunlight in different ways.
Jiuzhaigou has more than 100 lakes and dozens of waterfalls. The Nuorilang Waterfall is the most famous one. It is 27 meters high and 270 meters wide, and it is the widest calcified waterfall in China. When the water falls down from the cliff, it makes a loud sound, and the spray flies everywhere. Standing in front of the waterfall, you will feel the power of nature.
In addition to lakes and waterfalls, Jiuzhaigou also has beautiful forests and snow-capped mountains. The forest is home to many rare animals and plants, such as giant pandas, golden monkeys and Chinese dove trees. The snow-capped mountains stand in the distance, and they make the whole valley look more magnificent.
Jiuzhaigou is a place of natural beauty. It is a gift from nature to humans. However, it was once damaged by an earthquake in 2017. After years of repair and protection, most of the scenic spots have been reopened to the public. We should cherish this beautiful place and protect it well, so that it can always keep its beauty.
26. When was Jiuzhaigou listed as a World Natural Heritage Site?
A. In 1990. B. In 1992. C. In 2017. D. In 2020.
27. What does the name “Jiuzhaigou” mean?
A. The valley of nine lakes. B. The valley of nine waterfalls.
C. The valley of nine Tibetan villages. D. The valley of nine mountains.
28. Why is the water of Jiuzhaigou’s lakes colourful?
A. Because the water is mixed with different dyes.
B. Because of the special minerals and algae in the lake bed.
C. Because the light of the sun is different every day.
D. Because the local people paint the lake bed in different colours.
29. Which is the most famous waterfall in Jiuzhaigou?
A. The Golden Whip Stream. B. The Reed Flute Cave Waterfall.

Today, food delivery (外卖) is an important part of our daily lives. But did you know it started a long time ago?
Expert Hou Yinguo says dining services like today’s food delivery began during the Han Dynasty. But the term “food delivery” was first used in the Song Dynasty.
At first, food delivery was a special service for important people. But later, it became popular among everyone.
In the Song Dynasty, China’s food takeout business reached a golden age. There was a lot of food in Bianjing (today’s Kaifeng in Henan). People often bought ready-made meals from local shops instead of cooking.
Without phones, ordering was harder than today. They had to visit a restaurant in person or send someone to make the order, then tell the restaurant when and where they needed the food, and the restaurant would bring it to them. The delivery person was called xianhan.
People wanted their delivered food to be warm and tasty. They didn’t have our modern technology (技术), but they were very clever! In the Song Dynasty, they had a special dish called wenpan. It was like two plates put together with space in the middle. They would pour hot water into that space between the plates to keep the food on top warm.
31. According to the passage, when was the term “food delivery” first used?
A. During the Song Dynasty. B. During the Han Dynasty.
C. During the Tang Dynasty. D. In modern times.
32. How did people in the Song Dynasty make a food delivery order without phones?
A. By sending a letter to the restaurant.
B. By sending a xianhan to the restaurant.
C. By shouting from their house to the restaurant.
D. By visiting the restaurant in person.
33. What is the main purpose of the sixth paragraph?
A. To explain why food delivery was only for important people.
B. To compare ancient and modern food delivery technology.
C. To describe the clever method people used to keep food warm during delivery.
D. To introduce the different kinds of food available in the Song Dynasty.
34. Which picture correctly shows wenpan from the Song Dynasty?
A. B. C. D.
35. What is the best title for this passage?
A. A Brief History of Food Delivery.
B. The Golden Age of Chinese Cooking.
C. The Life of Delivery Workers in History.
D. How Technology Changed Food Delivery.
