Thinking :What do you think of nature? 大自然既是善良的慈母,同时也是冷酷的屠夫。 On 26 December 2004, Tilly Smith, a 10-year-old English schoolgirl, and her family were on holiday in Phuket, Thailand. Everyone was enjoying the beautiful weather that morning. Some people were swimming in the sea, and some were relaxing on the beach. But while Tilly was walking along the beach with her family, she noticed something strange. Thick white froth was forming on top of the waves. Next, she saw that the waves were coming in instead of going out. Just then, she remembered something important. Two weeks before, her geography teacher had explained that earthquakes under the sea could create dangerous waves called tsunamis! 在度假 在海滩 沿着海滩散步 注意到一些奇怪的事 厚厚的白色泡沫 在浪尖形成 涌上岸而不是退去 解释……(后接宾语从句) 海底地震 “I know what’s going to happen! There’s going to be a big wave,” Tilly cried. Unfortunately, her family didn’t believe her and wanted to continue their walk. However, Tilly refused to take a single step further. Finally, her mother decided to continue the walk alone, and the rest of her family returned to the hotel. Back at the hotel, Tilly’s father told a security guard about the tsunami. The security guard was shocked. He knew about the huge earthquake in nearby Indonesia. It meant that a tsunami was possible! He jumped into action right away and rushed to get people off the beach. Everyone began to panic. People were screaming and running as fast as they could when they saw a huge wall of water coming from the sea. 想要继续散步 refuse to do sth 拒绝做某事 再向前走一步 decide to do sth 决定做某事 回到酒店 tell sb about sth 告诉某人... 附近印尼的大地震 立即采取行动 急忙把人们从海滩疏散 开始恐慌 尖叫着尽可能快地跑 一堵巨大的水墙(比喻海啸) 从大海涌来 Tilly was right! Her mother was one of the last people on the beach, but thankfully, her family made it to safety just as the water hit the hotel. The 2004 tsunami caused over 200,000 deaths, but no one on the beach died that day. This true story shows how a single lesson could mean the difference between life and death. When an earthquake happens under the ocean, it creates a tsunami. That's because the earthquake transfers(转移) large amounts of energy to water above it. The word comes from the Japanese words tsu(harbor) and nami(wave). Normal ocean waves have an average wavelength of about 100 metres and an average height of about 2 metres, while a tsunami can have a wavelength of 193 kilometres or more. A tsunami travels at the speed of about 800 kilometres per hour in the deep ocean. And it's almost impossible to notice a tsunami because it might be at a height of as little as 0.9 metres. As a tsunami comes to a coastline, things begin changing greatly. When it reaches shallow(浅的) waters, the wave speed drops below about 80 kilometres per hour. The wavelength also gets shorter, but the height of the wave grows greatly. It creates a huge wall of water along coastlines, which brings great damage to coastal areas. Now, many areas have developed a tsunami warning system to give people along the coastline as much advance(预先的) warning as possible. And in Japan many coastal communities build tsunami walls and floodgates to make preparations for a tsunami. 拓展阅读 1. When does a tsunami come into being? 2.
