Ghaffar Pourazar developed a strong interest in Beijing Opera and learned the necessary skills to perform it. Later, he became popular with his lively performance of the Monkey King.
In 1993, he happened to watch Beijing Opera performed in London by professionals from Jingju Theatre Company of Beijing. Ghaffar was captivated by the beautiful voices, colorful clothes, excellent stories and so on. So after a year, he arrived in China alone and began to learn Beijing Opera.
At the age of 32, he had to learn with teenage students every day, starting from the most basic training of the legs and waist (腰). At that time, he was mostly troubled by the dialogue (对话) in Beijing Opera. To him, it was the biggest problem. But he never gave up, and he tried his best to practise. Four years later, he began to learn to perform the Monkey King. He usually arrived at the practice room an hour earlier than the other performers and he also bought books and CDs to understand the character better. Finally, he won a top international prize for performing the Monkey King.
To help more people enjoy Beijing Opera, Ghaffar often teaches the traditional art in schools across many countries. He once led actors to perform 66 times in one and a half months in the US and took a 48-member team to perform in Malaysia. In the past 10 years, he has performed in more than 400 shows, sharing this traditional art and his lifelong hobby with people around the world.

It may sound hard to believe that animals can predict earthquakes, but many facts seem to support this idea.
The earliest report of unusual animal actions before a big earthquake was from Greece in 373 BC. Rats and weasels (黄鼠狼) left their homes and went to safe places several days before a strong earthquake.
On February 4, 1975, Chinese officers told people in Haicheng, Liaoning to leave their houses and stay outdoors. They thought a disaster was coming, partly because of animals’ strange actions. For example, many toads (蟾蜍) appeared in the streets and sleeping snakes came out of the ground. Hours later, a big and strong earthquake hit the city.
Another example happened in December 2004 in a national park in Sri Lanka. The animals felt something wrong that day. Birds flew away for no reason, and elephants ran to higher ground. Minutes later, a huge earthquake happened under the sea.
However, scientists say that although animals act strangely before earthquakes, this does not mean they can predict disasters. It could just be a natural answer because all animals have the ability to stay away from danger.
So how do they do it? Animals have very good senses. They can find small environmental changes we do not notice. Some have strong hearing or smell; others can notice changes in atmospheric pressure (大气压). For example, fish can feel changes in water pressure, so they may jump out of water or swim in strange ways before an earthquake.
Although scientists do not agree on animals’ special ability, it is good to pay more attention to the animals around you.

A Fire Evacuation Drill
Last Friday afternoon, our school held a fire evacuation drill. All teachers and students took part in it.
When the fire alarm rang, we left the classroom quickly and quietly. We covered our mouths and noses with wet towels, walked down the stairs in order and didn’t push each other. Later, a teacher showed us how to use fire extinguishers properly. We all listened carefully and even tried using them under the teacher’s guidance.
I think this drill is very useful. It teaches us what to do in a fire and helps us stay calm and safe in an emergency. It’s an important lesson for everyone.
