What can you do with $20? Buy a few snacks or maybe a movie ticket and popcorn? In Mrs. Johnson’s classroom, $20 buys something far more powerful—a lesson in kindness that lasts a lifetime.
Mrs. Johnson, a high school English teacher, was heartbroken when her sister Emma died in a car accident. A police officer returned Emma’s bag, which had $100 inside. “Emma was always helping others, ” Mrs. Johnson said, “so I knew the money must be used for good. ”
14
One day, while her class was reading a book about a world without kindness, Mrs. Johnson had an idea. She added some of her own money to Emma’s and gave each student $20. Their task was simple: do an act of kindness in Emma’s name.
This started the “$20 Challenge”. The students loved it. They used the money to buy food for families having a hard time, give a safe place to animals in need of care, and cheer up people who served in the army. One student bought doughnuts(甜甜圈) and handed them out on a street corner with her uncle. The experience touched her so much that she continued doing it every year.
15
After the first term, the community began donating(捐赠), allowing the challenge to continue. By last fall, over 350 acts of kindness had been done in Emma’s memory.
The project helped many people and also changed the students. They learned that even a small act can make someone’s day better and that being kind doesn’t need to cost much. Mrs. Johnson taught them a valuable lesson: kindness doesn’t have to be huge; it just needs to be shared.

Have you ever thought that sand dunes(沙丘) could move? It might sound like something from a science fiction movie, but this is actually happening in real life! Dunes are like giant piles of sand that form in deserts where there is plenty of sand but little water. Their shapes and positions change over time depending on how the wind blows.
26
However, an interesting new study from Nanjing University shows that the dunes in western China’s deserts are now moving more slowly than before. How did the researchers find this out? They used satellite(卫星) pictures taken from the sky between 1986 and 2021. By comparing these photos, the team discovered that the movement speed of the dunes has slowed down by about 30 percent over the years. In the areas with the fastest decline(下降), their speed has dropped from around 9 meters to only 4. 5 meters per year.
27
Why is this happening? The main reason is that the wind in these areas has become weaker. When the wind is not as strong, it cannot carry as much sand, so the dunes move more slowly. This finding supports a worldwide idea called “global wind stilling”, which means that wind near the ground is slowing down in many parts of the world.
28
This change has both good and bad effects. On the one hand, slower winds carry less sand and dust into the air, so dust storms(沙尘暴) happen less often. With fewer storms, plants in dry areas have a better chance to grow back, which is good for the environment. On the other hand, weaker winds also mean that wind power does not work as well, so it may become harder to produce clean energy from wind. Besides, lighter winds might make it more difficult for air pollution to go away quickly.

Today, major sports events are not just about amazing athletes and exciting competitions. They are also becoming powerful examples of keeping our planet healthy. Thanks to new greener ideas, these events are causing less harm to the environment in smart ways.
39
A key area of improvement is energy use. Many new stadiums(体育场) are built with clean energy in mind. For example, they put up large solar panels(太阳能板) on their roofs and walls. These panels catch sunlight and turn it into electricity to power the lights and scoreboards. Inside, smart systems automatically adjust heating, cooling, and lighting so that no energy is wasted when a room is empty.
40
Another big change is in the things we use. To cut down on trash, many events are saying “no” to single-use plastics. Fans might bring their own water bottles or buy drinks in cups that can be used again. Some events even use uniforms and equipment made from recycled materials, like plastic bottles turned into sportswear.
Digital tools also help a lot. Instead of printing thousands of paper tickets and programs, events use mobile apps and e-tickets. Giant LED screens show information, replacing paper posters. This saves countless trees.
41
Food service is getting greener too. Stadiums now try to buy food from local farms. This means the food doesn’t travel as far, reducing pollution from trucks. Leftover food is often given away to communities in need instead of being thrown out.
Fans play a huge part in this change. People are encouraged to take the bus, subway, or bike to the game. Many stadiums offer safe bike paths and parking to make cycling easy. Some even give small rewards to fans who show a public transport ticket.
42
In conclusion, through these eco-friendly improvements, sports events are showing the world that fun and responsibility can go together. Every small step, like using a reusable bottle or taking the bus, adds up to a big difference for our future.

Is it common for you to look at your phone for hours with your head down and shoulders forward? Most of us do this. But if you keep having bad posture(姿势), it will get worse. How you sit or stand affects not only your back, but also your body and mind.
53
Good posture means keeping the natural shape of your neck and back. Your back should be straight but not too hard. 16 Balance your weight on both feet, and keep your muscles relaxed.
Looking at phones or computers for a long time can cause “tech neck”. Your head moves forward and the top part of your back rounds. 17 Bad posture also makes it harder to breathe well. It can increase stress, and even cause headaches or trouble thinking clearly.
54
18 Studies show that people with good posture are often happier, more confident and less worried than people who slouch(低头垂肩). Other research found they can pay attention better during tests. If your posture isn’t good, you can improve it easily! A comfortable chair or pillow can help keep your back’s natural shape. 19 Moreover, doing a few easy back exercises every day can make your muscles stronger and help you stand straighter.
55
When you take a break, try these moves:
Shoulder Press: Press your shoulders back, hold, and relax.
Wall Angels: 20
Bridge: Lie down, bend your knees, and lift your hips up.
Superman: Lie on your stomach and lift your arms and legs a little.
Good posture needs practice. But it helps you feel better and stay healthier every day.
56
A. This can bring neck and shoulder pain.
B. Move your arms up and down slowly against a wall.
C. Make sure your computer screen is at eye level.
D. Try to keep your ears, shoulders and hips in one line.

One morning, Mary finds an old key. When it unlocks a half-hidden door, she discovers the secret garden inside! Unfortunately, nobody has taken care of the plants, and therefore, much of it is in a bad state.
75
Later, Mary tells her secret to a new friend, Dickon. The young boy knows a lot about gardening, and they work together to make the garden beautiful again. One night, Mary hears someone crying again and discovers Colin, her cousin. He is unhappy and weak because he has lived alone in a hidden room since his mother’s death. He has not walked for years because he thinks he has an illness. Mary and Dickon tell him stories about the garden and take him secretly to see it.
76
Over time, Colin grows stronger. The fresh air and beautiful garden are good for him, and he proves that he is not ill when he gets to his feet for the first time in years! The three friends spend time together in the garden and grow happier day by day.
