“Come here! What a good boy! ” I was shocked to hear my mom say this cheerfully during my hospital visit. She’d been seriously ill for a long time, always looking sad and worn out, and I hadn’t heard her sound so genuinely happy in ages. Rounding the corner, I found the sweet reason: a lovely golden retriever(金毛寻回犬) named Banjo, a professional therapy dog, sitting gently beside her.
25
Banjo was with his owner Anna, a regular hospital volunteer who kindly shared her story with me. Anna loved animals deeply since childhood and always kept one or two dogs at home. Playing with them helped her relax after tiring days, and she soon realized many people had no chance to have a pet’s company. She wondered if her dogs could help others in need, and that thought started her meaningful volunteer journey.
26
Now Anna and Banjo visit hospitals and nursing homes regularly, bringing precious joy to sick, lonely or disabled people. Banjo has been a therapy dog for nearly three years. Stress often slows patients’ recovery, and a therapy dog eases stress just by being around. At the hospital, my mom petted Banjo gently, fed him snacks and played fetch with him, forgetting her pain and illness for a sweet while.
27
Such warm moments are truly priceless for my mom. She still looks forward to my visits every time, but now she also eagerly waits for Anna and Banjo to come by. Their visit touched me deeply, and I made up my mind that if I get a dog of my own in the future, I’ll be a volunteer like Anna, spreading warmth and joy with my pet to more people in need.

Have you ever noticed a cat quickly running away from a bathtub? Most cats really don’t enjoy being wet. This common behavior has some interesting scientific reasons behind it.
Evolution may be the first reason. The ancestors(祖先) of our pet cats came from dry, desert-like areas in Africa and the Middle East. Water wasn’t a regular part of their lives, so they never developed a natural comfort with swimming or bathing like some other animals. These wild cats did not need to go into lakes or rivers, which explains why many pet cats today still act surprised or scared around large amounts of water.
38
Another major reason is connected to a cat’s amazing sense of smell. Cats need their own special smell to understand the world and feel safe. They spend hours cleaning themselves to keep their own familiar smell on their fur. Water, especially tap water which can contain chemicals like chlorine(氯), washes this important smell away. To a cat, this is like losing its personal identity card. At the same time, the strong, unfamiliar smells in the water can confuse their sensitive noses, making the experience even more stressful.
39
Furthermore, a cat’s normal body temperature is higher than a human’s. This means that water feels much colder to their skin than it does to us. Getting wet can make them lose body heat quickly, leading to an uncomfortable and stressful chill.
Lastly, many cats dislike the feeling of water on their skin and paws. It can feel strange and uncontrollable to them. Sudden noise of moving water may also frighten them, as their natural feeling is to escape from things they cannot control.
40
So, when a cat seems unhappy about water, it’s not just being difficult. Their dislike is a mix of their ancient history, their need for their own smell, their physical sensitivity, and their natural feelings. Understanding this can help us care for them better.
41

Imagine an AI-powered robotic dog that shakes its tail and happily follows your words, or a smart study helper shaped like a wise bird that helps you solve math problems step by step. These are not just toys from stories—they are real AI “smart friends” appearing in our lives.
According to data from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, China’s AI toy market was expected to be worth 29 billion yuan in 2025. International brands from other countries are also set to develop AI products for kids.
51
Why do children like these toys so much? Experts say they use technology to build emotional(情感的) connections. They remember your name, answer your questions and tell stories you enjoy. More importantly, they can help with learning. In the past, only rich children could have private teachers or special lessons. Now, AI toys can offer similar help to many kids. They can teach English, explain science, and create fun games based on what a child likes to learn.
52
But these smart toys also bring problems. Sometimes, they may give bad advice. For example, in a test, one AI bear told a child where to find knives and how to light a match. Also, if children spend too much time with AI friends, they might find it hard to play with real people. AI friends never say “no”, never argue, and never show their own feelings. This may make it difficult for children to understand real feelings or solve problems with friends later.
53
So, what should we do? Stricter rules are needed for AI companies to make safer toys for children. Parents also play an important role. AI toys can be good helpers, but they cannot take the place of family time, playing outside, or real friendships. Childhood should be a time to explore the real world, learn from mistakes, and grow with love and care.
AI toys are exciting new tools, but we must use them wisely. Balancing fun with safety, and technology with real human connection, will help every child grow up happily and healthily.

Everyone wants to live a long and healthy life. To discover how, scientists have studied special places called “Blue Zones”—places where people live much longer than average. The term started when researchers marked these areas with blue circles on a map.
So, what makes Blue Zones special? After studying them closely, experts like Dan Buettner found nine common habits, called the “Power 9”. 36
64
First, food and diet play a key role. People in Blue Zones mainly eat plant-based foods like vegetables, fruits, beans, and whole grains. 37 For example, in Okinawa, Japan, one of the Blue Zone, people stop eating when they are 80% full, a practice called Hara Hachi Bu, which helps avoid overeating and reduce the pressure on the body.
Second, natural movement is another important habit. People there don’t usually exercise at a gym. 38 They walk to places, garden, or do household chores. This steady, gentle movement keeps their bodies healthy without stress, as it fits naturally into their daily life instead of feeling like a chore.
65
Third, a strong sense of purpose and community helps people live longer. Most have a clear reason to wake up every morning. 39 Families often live together with several generations, providing love and support for both the young and the old. They also have strong social circles and close friends, which reduce loneliness and improve mental health.
40 We can eat more plants, move naturally daily, and spend time with family and friends. By learning from these long-living cultures, we can also live healthier and happier lives.
66
A. They value family life.
B. They also practice mindful eating.
C. They stay active through daily tasks.
D. These habits help people keep healthy in all ways.
E. People in Blue Zones never worry about their health.
F. The good news is that you don’t need to live in a Blue Zone to learn their secrets.

In daily life, many students often buy things they don’t really need, such as cute school things with cartoon pictures, useless toys or popular sweets that look special but taste just so-so. This impulsive consumption(冲动消费) wastes money that our parents work hard to earn and valuable resources like paper and plastic. Rational consumption(理性消费) means buying what we truly need with a clear mind and avoiding unnecessary things. For example, when we need a new pen for study, we choose a practical one instead of a costly special one with nice designs. It’s an important ability for us junior high school students to develop, as it helps us use money wisely and form a good sense of responsibility.
87
First, we should make a detailed shopping list before going shopping. For instance, when going to the school supplies store, write down what we really need—a notebook for notes, a ruler for math and an eraser—and never buy items not on the list, like a nice sticker(贴纸) book. Second, we need to compare prices and focus on quality. When buying schoolbags, we can find similar ones in different stores at different prices. A reasonably priced and good-quality one saves money and lasts longer. Third, we should resist the temptation(诱惑) of advertisements. Some ads on TV or social media overstate(夸大) product advantages, making us buy things we don’t need.
88
Practicing rational consumption helps us save money for important things like useful books or after-school courses, and teaches us to value our parents’ hard work. It helps us form good habits and gets us well ready for our future. All in all, rational consumption is a useful skill every junior high school student should master.
