The Undercover Economist A favourite of the 10Eighty team is Tim Harford’s The Undercover Economist — if you’ve ever wondered why the gap between the rich and the poor is so great, then this book is for you. Relatable and engaging, Harford highlights the relevance of economics to everyday life, from buying a coffee to sitting in a traffic jam. He exposes how coffee shops, supermarkets and airlines convince us to part with our money, shedding light on how to apply economic principles to everyday life. Slow Productivity 10Eighty’s researcher also recommends Slow Productivity by Cal Newport for the summer reading list. In the modern workplace workers feel pushed to the edge by continual meetings, overflowing inboxes, non-stop busywork and office rules that laugh at autonomy and agency. Newport offers alternative strategies for knowledge workers to do the best work of their lives by taking a slower approach to work that matters. Tom Sawyer Few books are better at sparking eagerness to act than Mark Twain’s Tom Sawyer. Forced to paint a fence white rather than play with his friends, naughty Tom finds a way to make it seem so appealing that the local kids want to do it — and end up paying Tom for the privilege. Business-school professors call it “psychic rewards”. What is your favorite from this summer reading list? Why not share your ideas with us below? 1. What does Cal Newport suggest knowledge workers do? A. Slow down to tackle key tasks. B. Stay off the endless busywork. C. Innovate antiquated office rules. D. Accomplish workload confidently. 2. According to the passage, why is Tom Sawyer recommended for summer reading? A. It specifies the “psychic rewards”. B. It stimulates motivation effectively. C. It shares an exciting kids’ adventure tale. D. It illustrates how to deal with naughty kids. 3. How does Tim Harford make economics accessible in The Undercover Economist? A. By analyzing economic theories in depth. B. By explaining the cause of the wealth gap. C. By connecting economic concepts to daily life. D. By revealing how businesses fuel consumption. B Troubled by scoliosis (脊柱侧弯) since the age of four — a condition that causes the spine (脊柱) to curve abnormally and affects roughly 100, 000 children in America each year — Anne had to wear a rigid plastic brace (支架) 19 to 22 hours a day to prevent the curve from exacerbating as she grew. Most of her classmates were kind. Still, Anne often felt set apart. In quiet moments, a sense of loneliness would wash over her — she was tired of feeling different from everyone else. That year, the Easter Bunny brought her a basket with a special doll. The doll, Chelsea, is Barbie’s sister, and she, too, wore a back brace for scoliosis. “She’s just like me!” Anne cried to her mother, Nicole, who smiled as the little girl examined every detail, right down to the doll’s curved spine. Anne played with Chelsea every day, bringing the doll everywhere. She felt a sisterhood with another girl like her. Weeks later, Anne voiced a heartfelt wish: “Mom, I wish all girls with scoliosis could have this doll so they don’t ever feel alone either.” Nicole saw renewed determination in her daughter’s eyes and helped turn the idea into a family mission. Anne’s twin brother and her dad all jumped in to help. They launched their efforts by starting a lemonade stand during a neighborhood sale, and then created a GoFundMe page on the Internet. After a local news station featured their story, the doll’s maker stepped in to support the cause, supplying all the dolls they needed. What began as a goal to donate50 dolls quickly grew beyond expectation. Now 11 years old, Anne and her family have donated more than 870 Chelsea dolls to hospitals nationwide, bringing smiles to countless children. “Even if you feel alone, you’re not.” she shared. “Everybody has something. It’s what you do with it that matters — so choose to help others to be strong in their journey.” 4. What does the underlined word “exacerbating” in Paragraph 1 mean? A. progressing B. improving C. examining D. curing 5. Why did Anne love the Chelsea doll so much? A. It was rare and delicate. B. It mirrored her situation. C. It looked like her lovely sister. D. It was a gift given by her sister. 6. How did Anne’s family first raise money? A. By running a drink stand. B. By applying for a webpage. C. By selling lemonade online. D. By organizing a neighborhood sale. 7. What message did Anne want to convey through the dolls? A. Charity begins at home. B. Fortune favors the brave. C. Be the light you want to see. D. Stay positive when facing difficulty. C The room looks like your typical office: white walls, low ceilings, gray carpet worn thin from years of foot traffic. But for this vacant (空着的) office outside Dupont Circle in Washington, D.C., real estate developers see potential. Cities across the U.S. are struggling with two problems: too much empty office space and not enough housing. Nationally, office vacancy rates reached roughly 20% in 2024, after years of employees working from home. At the same time, the national housing shortage is in the millions. Cities like D.C., are now betting that by turning empty offices into homes, one crisis can help solve the other. A project in D.C., which broke ground last month, is the largest such conversion (转化) in the city to date. The overall structure of the buildings will remain the same, but with major additions: a lighter-colored exterior will replace the gray concrete from the 1960s, and old inefficient windows will be replaced by larger ones that let in more light per unit. Plans include luxuries such as a pool and a dog park, with projected rent around $4,000 per month. Yet 60 units will be set aside as affordable housing. “We would love to do more,” says Matt Pestronk, the president of a development company, “but unfortunately, almost all capital seeks a return. This was as much as we could afford to do.” “The scale of the shortage far outpaces what conversions can provide.” says Tracy Loh, a fellow at the Brookings Institution who studies adaptive reuse of old buildings. But she argues that these projects still matter, “It does kill two birds with one stone, in terms of providing some housing supply.” And it tends to create housing in central, transit-accessible areas that are in high demand. The decline of manufacturing (制造业) in the late 20th century offers a glimpse of what comes next. When shifts happen in the economy and society, the built environment must change to match contemporary demand. Just as empty factory floors became trendy apartments, today’s empty office spaces are turning into stylish kitchens and bedrooms. 8. What are cities like DC trying to do? A. Repurpose empty offices. B. Tear down unused buildings. C. Build housing in suburbs. D. Encourage working from home. 9. What can be inferred about the project in paragraph 3? A. It requires structural changes. B. It targets low-income families. C. It is funded by the government. D. It balances profit and social needs. 10. What does Tracy Loh think of the conversion? A. Realistic. B. Far-reaching. C. Demanding. D. Short-sighted. 11. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Cities Are Caught in Crisis B. Housing Demand Is Crying for More C. Offices Are Becoming Homes D. Manufacturing Is Gaining a Second Life D Saying they can no longer ignore the rising prices of health care, some of the most influential medical groups in the nation are recommending that doctors weigh the costs, not just the effectiveness of treatments, as they make decisions about patient care. The shift, little noticed outside the medical establishment but already controversial inside it, suggests that doctors are starting to redefine their roles, from being concerned exclusively about individual patients to exerting influence on how healthcare dollars are spent. In practical terms, the new guidelines being developed could result in doctors choosing one drug over another for cost reasons or even deciding that a particular treatment — at the end of life, for example — is too expensive. In the extreme, some critics have said that making treatment decisions based on cost is a form of rationing (配给制) . Some doctors see a potential conflict in trying to be both providers of patient care and financial overseers. “There should be forces in society who should be concerned about the budget, but they shouldn’t be functioning simultaneously as doctors.” said Dr. Martin Samuels at a Boston hospital. He said doctors risked losing the trust of patients if they told patients, “I’m not going to do what I think is best for you because I think it’s bad for the healthcare budget in Massachusetts.” Doctors can face some grim trade-offs. Studies have shown, for example, that two drugs are about equally effective in treating macular degeneration, an eye disease. But one costs 50 dollars and the other close to 2, 000 dollars. Medicare could save hundreds of millions of dollars a year if everyone used the cheaper drug, Avastin, instead of the costlier one, Lucentis. But the Food and Drug Administration has not approved Avastin for use in the eye. And using it rather than the alternative, Lucentis, might carry an additional, although slight, safety risk. Should doctors consider Medicare’s budget in deciding what to use? Still, some analysts say that there’s a role for doctors to play in cost analysis because not many others are doing so. “In some ways,” said Dr. Daniel Sulmasy, “it represents a failure of wider society to take up the issue.” 12. What do some most influential medical groups recommend doctors do? A. Reflect on the responsibilities they are supposed to take. B. Readjust their practice in view of the cuts in health care. C. Take costs into account when making treatment decisions. D. Pay more attention to the effectiveness of their treatments. 13. What may the new guidelines being developed lead to? A. The redefining of doctors’ roles. B. Overuse of less effective medicines. C. The prolonging of patients’ suffering. D. Conflicts between doctors and patients. 14. What risk do doctors see in their dual role as patient care providers and financial overseers? A. They may lose the respect of patients. B. They may have to use less effective drugs. C. They may be forced to divide their attention. D. They may be involved in a conflict of interest. 15. What do some experts say about doctors’ involvement in medical cost analysis? A. It may add to doctors’ already heavy workloads. B. It will help to save money for society as a whole. C. It results from society’s failure to tackle the problem. D. It raises doctors’ awareness of their social responsibilities. 第二节 阅读补全 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Something that is interactive involves input or actions on the part of the user. Until he was 13 years old, he never wanted to leave his hometown. But last year, Sandro’s father’s investment went bad, wiping out the family and sending his parents to prison. As a teenager under 16 years old, Sandro was forced to go to Newcastle in the northeast of England to stay with his uncle Lawrence. Sandro had a lot of difficulties in the new environment. He didn’t like the food in England. Nobody could forecast the weather in Newcastle. He had to start learning the second foreign language in his new school. Pocket money was not enough as usual. Almost every subject was a challenge for him. Most importantly, he had no friends. It seemed nobody knew him and he knew nobody in the school. On an early summer evening, when Sandro was going home alone from school as usual, a man called him from behind. Sandro turned around and saw Eddie, his PE teacher, standing in front of him. “You know, the school will have a swimming competition next month. There will be all kinds of races. Will you participate?” Eddie asked. Sandro took a look at Eddie with doubt and answered, “You sure? Me? No. I won’t. I can swim, but I’m slower than a snail.” Eddie smiled and then said, “Yes. Indeed. You are, in breaststroke(蛙泳), in backstroke, and in butterfly, but not in freestyle. So join the freestyle race! 200-meter freestyle is the game suitable for you.” Sandro was speechless at that moment. He had never known someone in the school was observing him and caring for him. “I don’t think I can win anything,” Sandro was still a little puzzled. “But you may get more recognition and consequently you can make some friends. That is more important than prizes,” Eddie responded immediately. Having hesitated for a while, Sandro agreed to have a try. 注意: 1. 续写词数应为150 左右; 2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。 Every afternoon for the next month, Sandro trained really hard. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Sandro dived into the pool confidently like other competitors. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 2025-2026学年度第二学期 高二级英语科期中考试卷 本试卷分选择题和非选择题两部分,共10页,满分为150分。 ____________________________________________________________________________________________? Finally, the day of competition arrived. With the sound of the starting gun piercing through the air, the race began as expected. Sandro dived into the pool confidently like other competitors. He swam as freely as a fish. 150 meters covered, he was left behind by 2 competitors. In the last 50 meters, Sandro swam magnificently, with his arms pushing forward fast, his legs hitting the water hard. Finally, the championship was still out of his reach. When the result was announced that Sandro won third place, however, other players congratulated him, the audience in the stadium bursting into thunderous applause. As teacher Eddie said, he won the recognition and respect from others with his effort. 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
