It is a great danger for humans to explore space. So what does space junk refer to? Space junk refers to unwanted man-made objects left in space. Broken satellites stay in orbit. Astronauts also drop small things . and more space objects create new junk. How does space junk form? Broken satellites Old space objects It moves at high speed. Even small pieces can break spacecrafts and satellites and cause more junk. Why is space junk dangerous? Countries need to work together to solve the problem. How do we deal with space junk? catch space junk burn space junk While-listening 02 10 Why is space junk a problem? Think Space junk 1 You are going to listen to a lecture. Look at the picture below. What do you think the lecture will be about? Discuss in pairs 2 Listen to the lecture and check if your guesses were correct. Then write down the main idea of the lecture. What space junk is and why it is a big problem for us. 3 Listen again and choose the correct answers. Note that there can be more than one answer to a question. (1)Which of the following can be space junk? a astronauts’ gloves b broken satellites c parts of rockets (2)Why can tiny pieces of space junk destroy spacecrafts and satellites? a Because spacecrafts and satellites travel very fast. b Because most pieces of space junk are man-made objects. c Because the amount of space junk is growing fast. (3)What problems can space junk cause? a It may fall back to the Earth and hurt people. b It may make space missions dangerous. c It may hit satellites and spacecrafts in orbit. post-listening 03 14 There are tens of thousands of man-made objects in orbit around the Earth. Many of them are useful things, like space stations and weather satellites. However, people have left lots of unwanted objects in space too, such as parts of old rockets. These objects are known as space junk. Since the 1950s, people have sent over 10,000 satellites into space. Many of these satellites have stopped working, but they are still in orbit because it is too expensive to bring them back to the Earth. Astronauts have also dropped things during their spacewalks, such as cameras, gloves and tool bags. These objects continue to orbit the Earth as space junk. Space junk is a big problem, and it is getting worse. Every year, we send more and more things into orbit, and this means more and more space junk in orbit too. Most pieces of space junk are very small, but they can still be very dangerous. Objects in orbit, such as satellites and spacecrafts, are travelling very, very fast. This means a small piece of space junk can destroy a spacecraft or satellite. When this happens, the spacecraft or satellite is broken up into hundreds of pieces, and there will be even more space junk in orbit. Scientists are very worried about space junk because it can make space missions very dangerous. If there is too much space junk in orbit, it will become impossible to travel into space. Countries around the world need to work together to solve this difficult problem. 04 17 ... ... Your ideas 4.What can we do to solve the problem of space junk? Discuss in pairs. 1.We can make better space tools to stop making new space junk. 2.Countries should work together to deal with space junk. 3.We can design new satellites that can return to the earth safely. 4.Scientists can invent special machines to collect space junk. 5.We should send fewer useless things into space. Speaking 19 How can we explore space? Think Discussing possibilities of living on Mars 1 Two students are talking about going to Mars. Read the dialogue and learn how to express possibility and impossibility. Pay attention to the expressions in blue. S1: I'm going to visit Mars. S2: That's impossible! You must be joking. S1: No, I'm not joking. It'll be possible to travel to Mars in the near future! S2: Says who? S1: The scientists. They say that we've made great progress in Mars exploration. So it's very likely that we'll be able to fly there by the 2050s. S2: I still think it's unlikely. 2 Do you think people will be able to live on Mars in the future? Discuss in pairs. Use the facts below to help you. What scientists know about Mars ·There's very little oxygen. The air is mostly CO₂ (about 95%). ·It's very cold (average surface temperature:-63℃). ·The air is thin, so the radiation(辐射)levels are high. ·There is ice on Mars's north pole. In the future, water may allow people to survive there. ·Of all the planets, the environment on Mars is most similar to the Earth's. ·There are different seasons on Mars, just like on Earth. When we talk about things we are not sure about, we can use the expressions below: Expressing possibility • It’s possible to... • It’s (very) likely that... • It’s quite probable that... • There is a good chance that... Expressing impossibility • It’s impossible to... • It's unlikely that... • I seriously doubt that... • That's impossible! 1.It is important to keep a healthy ___________/ˈdeɪli ruːˈtiːn/. 2. _________/speɪs dʒʌŋk/ brings great risks to our research. 3. Don’t be afraid to ____________/meɪk mɪˈsteɪks/ when you learn new knowledge. 4. Many __________________ /ˌmæn ˈmeɪd ˈɑːbdʒekts/ help people live a better life. 5. A strong hit can easily _______ /dɪˈstrɔɪ/ expensive machines. destroy daily routine Space junk make mistakes man-made objects (It’s possible to...) It’s possible to clean up space junk in the future. 2. (It’s (very) likely that...) It’s very likely that more space junk will be produced. 3. (It’s quite probable that...) It’s quite probable that people will cut down space junk. 4. (There is a good chance that...) There is a good chance that humans will solve the problem together. 5. (It’s impossible to...) It’s impossible to clear all space junk at once. 6. (It's unlikely that...) It's unlikely that space junk will disappear in a short time. 7. (That's impossible!) I seriously doubt that we can solve the space junk problem quickly. With the development of modern technology, human beings have e______ space for many years. However, a serious problem called space junk is becoming worse and worse. Now space junk has become a big threat to space travel. If we do not take action, it may be i_________ for humans to explore space one day. To solve this problem, scientists are trying to invent new t______ to collect space rubbish. Also, countries around the world should work together. We should design better space products to produce less waste. Protecting space is also our d______.
