①To-wit-to-woo, to-wit-to-woo! What’s that strange sound coming from the forest in the moonlight? It’s an owl (猫头鹰), of course! The owl is different from all other birds in so many ways.
②All day long, seated comfortably in the tree, the owl is sleeping or at least it’s trying to snooze, because it’s sometimes hard to close the eyes with all the sounds made by the little birds and animals in the forest! The owl hunts (打猎) only at night. When evening comes, the animals all get to a safe place. The owl opens its big, round eyes. Any little animal around had better watch out!
③The owl mostly eats small animals like mice, but it wouldn’t say no to another bird if it gets the chance! The owl uses its fantastic hearing to find its food, and then it turns its head from side to side, using its sharp (锋利的) eyes to follow the animal. Finally, it flies down to get the animal. Owls have special, soft feathers (羽毛), so they can fly without making any sound. Owls s are such good hunters that they can even catch a fly in the air!
④The owl is always quiet, except when you get too close to its home. The owl is a great mother, who protects her babies by opening her feathers angrily. An owl will even hurt people if she thinks her babies are in danger!
⑤An owl has no teeth, so it eats the whole animal. All the parts of the animal that the owl can’t digest (消化) will end up as small pieces. If you find these small pieces, you will know you are near an owl’s home.

54. Why are owls good hunters?
A. Because they can fly very fast.

When talking about Chongqing, we always think of hot pot. It is not only a great dish, but also a symbol of the city. Today, let me tell you something about it.
The soup in Chongqing hot pot is spicy (辣的).
We cook everything in a huge pot with chili (辣) and it helps us keep warm in winter. Today, there are many different kinds of hot pot, but the spicy soup stays the same.
What’s more, you have a lot of food choices but there is no “right order (顺序)”. That means you can enjoy what you like at any time. Meat, vegetables... If you like something, just put it into the spicy soup.
Hot pot shapes the culture of Chongqing. Next time when you visit Chongqing, please have a try.

Do you know Chaoshan hot pot from Guangdong? That’s my favorite, and I enjoy it all year round with my family.
Chaoshan hot pot is different from Chongqing hot pot. One of the differences is that the soup is not spicy at all. In fact, you can even drink the soup when having Chaoshan hot pot.
Also, please be careful about the order you cook and eat. Remember: Meat always goes before vegetables. We cook meat first because it makes the soup really tasty. After we finish the meat, we put vegetables and noodles into the soup. It’s a perfect end (结束) to the meal.
So, what’s your favorite dish? Please show me photos and tell me where to find it. Thanks!

When the new term begins, Zhao Qian is not happy to go back to school. It is not because she doesn’t like school. It is because of her hair.
There is a hair rule in Zhao’s school. For boys, they should have a crew cut (平头). For girls, their hair should not hang past their ears. Students can’t change their hair colour. Zhao and the other girls in the class don’t like this rule at all.
Zhao’s story is not the only one. However, most schools have a more friendly rule. Xu Xing is a teacher at Beijing 101 School. In his school, boys can’t have hair on their temples (太阳穴), and girls can’t have hair past their shoulders (肩膀).
Why do schools make rules about students’ haircut? “Your hair should go with your job,” says Xu. “Cool hair is for grown-ups. School is a different place.” When students care too much about their hair, they may not focus on their studies.
Do teenagers have to show themselves through(通过) their hair? In my eyes, the answer is no. They should think about more important things. Being kind and helpful makes them really beautiful.
