15.What does the speaker mainly want to tell us?
A.We should learn more foreign languages.
B.Different countries have different customs.
C.We can’t ask “Have you had meals?” any more.
【答案】11.B 12.C 13.A 14.C 15.B
【原文】 “Where are you going?” The Chinese often ask this question when two friends meet in the street. But if you ask Americans the same question, they will be surprised, because they think that going to some place is their own business. In their eyes, only a policeman will ask such a question in the street. Americans will feel the same if you ask them, “Have you had your meal?” In fact, to us Chinese, such questions do not mean anything but greeting. In America, when two friends meet in the street, they will say “Hello” or “How are you?” They never ask “Where are you going?” or “Have you had your meal?” If two friends meet at meal times and one asks the other, “Have you had your meal?” that means he wants to invite his friend to have a meal with him. It’s quite different from what it means in China. The examples above tell us that people in different countries have different customs. Now that we are learning foreign languages, we must pay great attention to those customs.

I am really enjoying my trip to the UK! Staying with Aunt Mary has been great fun. Yesterday, I learnt a lot about manners here.
It was Aunt Mary’s birthday yesterday so we went to a very famous restaurant in London. Aunt Mary told me to wear smart clothes and shoes, because the restaurant had a “dress code”. That means you can only eat there if you are wearing smart clothes! The restaurant is one of the most popular in London, so we had to queue for about ten minutes. British people do not mind standing in queues.
The menu was in French, not English! However, the waiter was very polite and friendly. He told me what the dishes were and helped me choose something. There were three different types of knives and forks to eat with. You must start with the knife and fork from the outside first. After the main course we also enjoyed some dessert which is a kind of sweet food eaten at the end of a meal, such as pudding, ice-cream, pancake and so on. When we finished, we put the knife and fork next to each other in the middle of the plate.
The food was very delicious. After the meal, Uncle John paid for the meal and left the waiter a “tip”. This is some extra money for good service.
It was such a treat to visit such an expensive restaurant. I am very lucky! Manners here can be very different from those at home. However, I know that not every restaurant in the UK is like that. You may see people eating with hands in some fast food restaurants.
1.Why did Uncle John leave the waiter a “tip”?
A.Because he was rich. B.Because the waiter was so poor.
C.Because giving a tip is a custom in the UK. D.Because the waiter offered good service.
2.Which of the following shows the right order of using the table settings (餐具) in the British restaurant?
A.Dessert Spoon—Teaspoon—Soup Spoon
B.Salad Fork—Dinner Knife—Dessert Spoon
C.Dessert Fork—Salad Knife—Soup Spoon
D.Salad Fork—Dessert Fork—Dinner Fork
3.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.The waiter helped the writer order the dishes.

阅读下面短文,完成短文后的问题。
If your birthday is coming, what kind of gifts would you expect? Or what will you buy for your friends’ birthdays? Mostly the giving of gifts and the culture are connected closely. Coming from the US, I have found gift-giving to be quite different in China compared to my home country. One example is the timing of when to open a gift. In the US, the person who gives the gift (let’s call them the “gifter”) will often want to see the person who gets the gift (let’s call them the “giftee”) immediately open the present. They want to see their reaction (反应) of excitement and joy. In China, however, it’s more polite to open the gifts after they come back home later.
Another aspect (方面) I’ve found different is the openness and directness of giving money. Although people in the US might give money to their children, it is usually doing very secretly with the money put in a card and not discussed out loud. In China, the practice is much more open in a flashy red envelope. Finally, the monetary value (金钱观) of the gift can play a big role in China in ways that are different from the US. An expensive gift in the US is usually greeted with great excitement. But in China, it can make the giftee feel awkward (尴尬的) due to a sense of having to return the favor (恩惠) in the future to the gifter.

A.Because he was rich. B.Because the waiter was so poor.
C.Because giving a tip is a custom in the UK. D.Because the waiter offered good service.

So, the next time you give a gift to somebody, remember that culture and meaning are part of every action we take.
11.When do Chinese people usually open the gifts?
12.What are the differences in gift-giving between China and the US?
13.Is it a burden (负担) if you receive expensive gifts on your birthday? Why or why not? (at least 2 reasons)

A
I am really enjoying my trip to the UK!

The fist-and-palm salute (掌拳礼) has a history of more than 3,000 years. It started during the Western Zhou Dynasty as a way to greet people.
