I met some foreign students from France. During the activity, we did many interesting things. We made French pastries together and I showed them how to write Chinese calligraphy. We talked a lot about our daily lives and different cultures. From this experience, I learned a lot about French culture and improved my communication skills. I realized that although we come from different countries, we share similar interests and dreams. I feel very excited to have this chance. I hope to have more cross-cultural experiences in the future. 1.________ amazing it is to experience different cultures around the world! Last Saturday, we went to visit Grandma Li, a 78-year-old lady. Our teacher told us to 11 her living habits first, just as the old saying goes, “When you are with the old, do as the old do.” When we got to her home, we knocked at the door 12 and waited for her to open it. It’s 13 to keep quiet in an old people’s home, because most of them don’t like loud noise. We brought some fresh fruit and flowers for her. We hoped to give her a big surprise and make her feel warm. First, we helped clean her house. One of my classmates swept the floor, and I helped 14 the window. Another classmate watered the flowers in the living room. It’s important to make every corner clean and bright. After cleaning, we sat down to talk with her. Grandma Li told us many interesting stories about her childhood. It’s a favourite 15 of conversation with old people, and we all listened carefully. In our country, we often 16 hands with the old when we meet them for the first time. But we should be gentle, not too strong. When Grandma Li gave us some candies, we didn’t put them into our bag 17 . She hoped we could eat them all at once, so we sat down and enjoyed the candies happily. We also learned that it’s not good to give an old person a gift of 4 of anything, because it’s a(n) 18 number in Chinese culture. We should pay attention to the small details when we get along with old people. At noon, we made a simple lunch for Grandma Li. We made sure the food was soft and not too salty, 19 it was good for her health. We cooked tomato and egg soup, steamed fish and some vegetables. Grandma Li said the food was delicious, and we were all very happy. After lunch, we sang some old songs for her. She was very happy and sang with us. One of my classmates is good at drawing, so he drew a 20 of her. She loved it very much and put it on the wall at once. Before we left, Grandma Li held our hands and thanked us a lot. We decided to come here every weekend to 22 her company, so she won’t feel lonely. We also learned a lot from this activity. We know that being polite and patient is the key to getting along with others. Every time we come here, we can learn 23 new. It’s a great experience for us to grow up. We hope more people can join us to bring more warmth to 24 old people in our community. Early chopsticks were used mainly for cooking until 400 AD when people began eating with chopsticks. We don’t know exactly when chopsticks were invented. Research shows that they didn’t come into wide use until about 300 BC. Chinese thinker Confucius (孔子) was an important person in the history of chopsticks, because he thought peace would not appear if people used knives at the table. The “no-knives-on-the-table” rule brought a big change in Chinese cooking. Food had to be cut into small pieces. This practice produced the unique style of Chinese cooking that has made Chinese food popular around the world. However, many Westerners find it difficult to use chopsticks. Eric, a foreign teacher, had the experience of learning to use chopsticks. “I need to hold them properly to be able to put the food carefully into my mouth.” Eric’s Chinese friends taught him patiently, but it still took him months to learn this skill. “ But it’s worth learning. I have learnt a lot from this experience,” Eric said. Cultures can often be understood through food. For Chinese, food doesn’t just provide energy. It also brings happiness. Chopsticks also mean a lot. As a good example of Chinese culture, they show the Chinese wisdom. 26.Why did the ancient Chinese invent chopsticks? A.Because they were hungry. B.Because they didn’t like food. C.Because they liked eating with hands. D.Because they wanted to keep their hands clean. 27.Who thought peace would not appear if people used knives during a meal? D.Cutting food into small pieces. 29.How do many Westerners feel about using chopsticks? A.It brings them happiness. B.It is difficult to use chopsticks. C.Using chopsticks is a kind of skill. D.It is important to learn how to use chopsticks. 30.Where is this passage most likely from? A.A science report. B.A history textbook. C.A culture magazine. D.A restaurant interview. B Emojis (表情符号) are a fun way to express ourselves while sending messages. But did you know that the same emoji can mean very different things in different cultures? This can cause misunderstandings or even trouble if you’re not careful enough. Let’s take a closer look at some emojis and their surprising cultural meanings. Let’s start with the thumbs-up (竖大拇指) emoji. In many Western countries, people use it widely to show agreement or to praise a job well done. However, in some parts of the Middle East, West Africa and South America, people see it as rude, similar to giving someone the middle finger (手指). The OK hand sign also has many kinds of cultural meanings. In the US and Europe, it simply means “everything is fine” or “perfect”. However, people in Brazil and Türkiye think it is an impolite gesture (手势). Even more interestingly, in France, it stands for “zero” or “nothing”. Clearly, this emoji’s meaning truly changes a lot across different cultures! The folded hands emoji also carries different meanings. In Western cultures, many people take it as a high-five—a gesture of celebration. But in most Asian cultures, it is a way to express thanks or greet others. The crossed fingers emoji can also get you into trouble. In the UK, the US and Canada, crossing fingers is a common way to wish someone good luck. However, in Vietnam, you’d better think twice before using the gesture, as it has an unexpected negative meaning there. Understanding these cultural differences can help avoid misunderstandings when communicating across cultures. 31.In which part of the world do people think the thumbs-up is rude? A.Asia. B.The Middle East. C.North America. D.Australia. 32.Which of the following has the most meanings according to the article? A. B. C. D. 33.What can we learn about the folded hands emoji? A.Western people use it to show anger. B.Many Asian people use it to say hi. C.It has the same meaning in all cultures. D.It is impolite in most European countries. 34.What should people avoid doing when meeting someone from Vietnam? A.Using folded hands to say thanks. B.Giving the thumbs-up to praise them. C.Crossing fingers for good luck. D.Making the OK sign for perfection. 35.What is the main purpose of this article? A.To encourage people to use emojis widely. B.To suggest some new ways to use emojis. C.To introduce the development of emojis. D.To explain emojis’ different cultural meanings. C Hello, I am Betty. My cousin Bob had just come back from his exchange year in Russia, and he couldn’t wait to tell his stories. “Living there truly kept my eyes and mind open,” he explained. “And the cultural differences? They hit me at once!” My cousin Bob shared one clear example. A Russian friend invited him to a popular restaurant in Moscow for a special occasion. Bob thought it would be a big dinner with lots of food. But when he got there, he saw the main thing was drinking—there were only a few small plates of simple food. Bob said he was used to this for guests then, but in China this way of eating is uncommon and was quite confusing to him at first. But the biggest shock came later. During freezing winters, Bob saw his Russian friends swimming in icy lakes—even young kids did it happily! It was a regular winter activity for them. They invited him to join this uncommon tradition. Though he felt embarrassed to refuse, he said no. “It looked like a professional winter sport!” he laughed. “Still,” Bob added, “this whole experience taught me so much. Seeing how others live—and what brings them joy in ways I never imagined—is the most valuable lesson.” 36.What was Bob’s main feeling about his exchange experience in Russia? A.The weather was cold there. B.He met many new people. C.His eyes and mind were truly opened. D.Russian food was delicious and cheap. 37.Where did Bob’s cultural surprise about dining habits happen? A.At a family party. B.At his Chinese home. C.At a street food market. D.In a Moscow restaurant. 38.What does the underlined word “this” refer to? A.A big dinner with lots of food. B.A special party. C.Feeling confused about customs. D.Light food with focusing on drinking. 39.How did Bob feel about joining the swimming? A.Happy and excited. B.Too afraid to do it. C.Lucky to watch first. D.Angry about the cold. 40.What does the story mainly tell us? A.Winter swimming is dangerous. B.Russians love professional sports. C.Learning about different things is valuable. D.Chinese dinners are better than Russian ones. lady/hate/turn to/usual/comfortable/attend/cultural What do you wear when you take a trip? A.Eric. B.Chinese. C.Confucius. D.Western people. 28.What led to a big change in Chinese cooking? A.Using chopsticks. B.The “no-knives-on-the-table” rule. C.Using knives during a meal. 26.第一段“Long time ago, people from other cultures used their hands to eat food, while the ancient Chinese invented chopsticks to keep their hands clean”,直接说明古人发明筷子是为了保持双手干净。 27.第二段“Chinese thinker Confucius(孔子) was an important person in the history of chopsticks, because he thought peace would not appear if people used knives at the table”,明确指出是孔子认为餐桌上用刀不利于和平。 28.第三段“The ‘no-knives-on-the-table’ rule brought a big change in Chinese cooking”,直接说明“餐桌上不放刀”的规则带来了中国烹饪的重大变化。 29.第四段“However, many Westerners find it difficult to use chopsticks”,直接表明很多西方人觉得使用筷子很困难。 30. 31.根据第二段“However, in some parts of the Middle East, West Africa and South America, people see it as rude, similar to giving someone the middle finger (手指).” 33.根据第四段“But in most Asian cultures, it is a way to express thanks or greet others.” 34.根据倒数第二段“However, in Vietnam, you’d better think twice before using the gesture, as it has an unexpected negative meaning there.” C Hello, I am Betty. 36.第一段中的“Living there truly kept my eyes and mind open.” 37.第二段提到“A Russian friend invited him to a popular restaurant in Moscow for a special occasion”,后文紧接着描述了用餐习惯带来的文化冲击,可知这次用餐文化冲击发生在莫斯科的餐厅。 38.根据划线词this的前文“But when he got there, he saw the main thing was drinking—there were only a few small plates of simple food”可知,this指代的就是俄罗斯这种“侧重喝酒、只有少量简单食物”的待客用餐方式。 39.由第二段中的“Though he felt embarrassed to refuse, he said no. ‘It looked like a professional winter sport!’” 40.文章结尾Bob的总结道“this whole experience taught me so much. We felt very happy and proud. This activity taught us that we should   21 more time caring for the old around us. A small kindness can make a big difference in their lives. Seeing how others live—and what brings them joy in ways I never imagined—is the most valuable lesson.” 根据材料内容选择最佳答案。 36.What was Bob’s main feeling about his exchange experience in Russia?
