A strong 7.9 earthquake hit central Myanmar on March 28,2025, causing major damage in the area. The earthquake was centered near Mandalay, the country’s second-largest city. The number of death has reached 2,719, with 4,521 people injured and many more still missing. The disaster unfolded in two phases: the first earthquake destroyed buildings, roads, and bridges, while aftershocks continued to cause problems.
The earthquake happened along the Sagaing Fault, where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet. Over many years, pressure built up between the plates and finally caused this earthquake. However, Myanmar’s old buildings, especially traditional ones made of wood and mud, were not strong enough to withstand the earthquake, which made the situation even worse.
Countries around the world quickly sent help. China was one of the first to respond, sending rescue teams with medical supplies, shelter materials, and special equipment to find survivors. India, Russia, and Singapore also sent aid. The United Nations helped organize the aid efforts, showing that the world is united in helping Myanmar.
However, rescuers faced many challenges. Roads and bridges were destroyed, making it hard to get aid to remote villages. There were also power cuts and communication problems. Bad weather made things worse, as rain could cause floods and spread diseases. Additionally, ongoing conflicts in northern Myanmar made it hard to get supplies to the affected areas, and hospitals in Mandalay were crowded with patients.
Despite the difficulties, there were also stories of hope. Local volunteers worked hard to rescue people trapped in the rubble. In Mandalay, a pregnant woman was rescued after being trapped for 50 hours. Farmers and students also adapted quickly, planting crops in temporary fields and attending classes in tents. The earthquake showed Myanmar’ s weaknesses, but it also showed the strength of the people and the world’s support. As aftershocks continue, Myanmar’ s people are determined to rebuild their lives and hope for a better future.
4. What do we know about the earthquake on March 28,2025?
A. It is the strongest earthquake in history.
B. It caused minor damage to the old buildings.
C. The main quake destroyed many constructions.
D. Pressure built up between the plates in aftershocks.
5. Which of the following is NOT a reason for the difficulties in rescue efforts?
A. Affected areas. B. Power failures.
C. Inaccessible roads. D. Communication problems.
6. Why does the author mention the story of a pregnant woman in the last paragraph?
A. To compare victims from different jobs. B. To show the theme of hope and recovery.
C. To explain the difficulty of rescue efforts. D. To give an example of the earthquake’s impact.
7. What’s the author’s tone in writing the article?
A. Concerned. B. Doubtful. C. Critical. D. Objective.

In a world overflowing with information, it may seem odd that people often go out of their way not to learn something. Whether it’s skipping a follow-up doctor’s appointment or refusing to read an unsettling news article, this tendency has a name: the “Ostrich (鸵鸟) Effect,” just like the bird supposedly burying its head in the sand. Researchers at the University of Chicago set out to understand when and why this occurs.
In one experiment, children aged from 5 to 10 were asked to imagine their favorite and least favorite candy. Then came the choice: Would they like to watch a video about why eating that candy was bad for their teeth? Children at the age of 5 or 6 wanted to know — good or bad, the information itself was exciting. Older children, however, hesitated. They were much less interested in hearing about the downsides of their favorite treat, though they had no problem learning why their least favorite candy was bad.
So why do children transform from fearless learners into strategic avoiders? The answer lies in emotions. Information is not neutral (中立的) — it often carries consequences for how we feel. News about our health, abilities, or beliefs can trigger disappointment, anxiety, or shame. By avoiding knowledge, people protect themselves, at least in the short term, from negative emotions.
Sparing ourselves from distress can be protective, yet when avoidance becomes habitual, the costs can outweigh the benefits. At a personal level, refusing to learn important medical information can endanger health. At a societal level, avoidance may entrench political divides or rigid beliefs. When people deliberately tune out perspectives that challenge their worldview, they lose opportunities for growth, understanding, and connection.
At its core, the Ostrich Effect reveals something deeply human. We are curious creatures, but also fragile ones. We want to know, yet we fear what knowing might mean. This push and pull shapes our decisions every day. This is why researchers stress the importance of teaching children not only to embrace curiosity, but also to develop resilience (韧性) and always grab the chance to learn, adapt, and succeed.
8. Which of the following shows the “Ostrich Effect”?
A. A student actively seeks feedback from teachers.
B. A woman turns a blind eye to her credit card bills.
C. A boy refuses to attend his cousin’s birthday party.
D. An employee buries himself in research and data analysis.
9. Why does the “Ostrich Effect” occur?
A. It blocks out distractions. B. It keeps us from feeling bad.
C. It helps us see things positively. D. It encourages independent thinking.
10. What does the underlined word “entrench” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Expose. B. Remove. C. Deepen. D. Transform.
11. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. Why Not Knowing Can Seem So Sweet
B. Why Embracing Curiosity Truly Matters
C. The Ostrich Effect: Comfort is the Best Option
D. From Candy to Curiosity: The Evolution of Resilience

Plastic has always been a double-edged sword — multi-purpose and cheap, but chemically stable. Traditional recycling methods involve multiple stages of sorting, cleaning, and melting (融化), which are energy-intensive and degrade the material’s quality. Turning plastic into fuel has been explored before, but existing techniques require high heat, complex catalysts (催化剂), and often produce impure results.
Now, a groundbreaking cooperation between scientists in the US and China has brought the world one step closer to a real solution. Using a specially designed catalytic reaction, researchers found a way to break down long plastic polymer (聚合物) chains into short hydrocarbon molecules — the building blocks of fuel — in a single step.
The team’s secret lies in a novel catalytic material that operates at medium temperatures — far lower than those used in conventional methods. Unlike traditional recycling, which melts plastic into lower-grade products, this catalyst essentially reduces plastics into usable hydrocarbon chains in just a few hours. The output can then be further processed into fuels for vehicles or even planes. According to Professor Zhang Wei, a chemical engineer from the Chinese partner university, the process transforms 95% of the plastic into usable hydrocarbons, leaving minimal remains and almost no harmful byproducts.
The implications of this breakthrough extend far beyond scientific curiosity. If widely used, the one-step plastic-to-fuel method could dramatically reduce both plastic waste and non-renewable fuel dependence.
Promising as the results are, experts stress that the cost of catalysts, the difficulty of collecting mixed plastic waste, and the issue of carbon emissions from burning fuels are key challenges to be addressed. For this reason, scientists see the innovation not as an end point, but as a temporary fix toward a cleaner future.
While questions remain, this innovation marks a hopeful turn in humanity’s long battle with plastic waste. It transforms what was once pollution into power and demonstrates that the solutions to big problems often lie in rethinking waste not as garbage-but as potential.
12. What is a key advantage of the new method of recycling plastics?
A. Low costs. B. Simple processes. C. High security. D. Adjustable reaction.
13. What does the novel catalyst help with?
A. Speeding up waste collection. B. Adjusting the operating temperature.
C. Minimizing harmful byproducts. D. Turning plastics into basic chemicals.
14. How do scientists regard the method?
A. A dead end. B. A starting point. C. A stepping stone. D. A definite answer.
15. What inspiration does the innovation bring to us?
A. New views create possibilities. B. Human effort overcomes challenges.
C. Close teamwork works wonders. D. Tough problems lead to innovations.

The Scholarship Jacket
Each year, my school awarded a green and gold scholarship jacket to the top graduate with the highest grades over eight years. As a straight-A student since my first year, I was determined to win it. Raised by my grandparents on a small farm, money was always tight — we simply could not afford fees or trips for any sports events. I knew the sports jacket was out of my reach, so the scholarship jacket was my only chance.
However, one afternoon, I accidentally overheard my teachers arguing in the classroom. Mr. Smith was angrily defending my academic record, “Martha deserves the jacket!” Yet, Mr. Bonne responded calmly, “But Joan’s father is on the) Board. We could say it was a close tie and...” The rest of his words were drowned out by the pounding in my ears. I stood frozen, feeling my dream shatter in the face of cruel injustice.
The next day, the principal called me in. Avoiding eye contact, he awkwardly explained a new “policy” to me: the Board would charge fifteen dollars for the jacket this year. “If you can’t pay,” he declared, “it will go to the next one in line.” Shocked as I was, I refused to give in without a word. Mustering all my dignity, I replied, “I’ll speak to my grandpa and let you know tomorrow.”
Grandpa was working in the bean field when I found him. Voice shaky, I blurted out the news about the fifteen-dollar fee. “I have to take the money tomorrow, otherwise it’ll be given to someone else.”
Grandpa paused, straightened his weary back, and rested his chin on the hoe (锄头) handle. He gazed at the green shoots before turning to me. “What does a scholarship jacket mean? ” he asked quietly.
“It means you’ve earned it by having the highest grades for eight years,” I answered without hesitation.
“Then if you pay for it, it’s not a scholarship jacket, is it?” Grandpa said, driving his hoe firmly into the soil. “Tell your principal I won’t pay.”
I walked back to the house and locked myself in the bathroom for a long time. I was angry with the Board for changing the rule; and I was angry with grandfather even though I knew he was right.
注意:1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。

The next day, with a heavy heart, I almost dragged myself into the principal’s office. He looked up from his desk, with a hint of curiosity in his eyes, and cut straight to the point, “So — what did your grandpa say?” Sitting upright with hands clasped tight, I stated Grandpa’s decision, “He said he wouldn’t pay for something I’ve already earned.” A sharp silence cracked between us. The principal paused, brows knitted and jaw set, as if wrestling with a difficult decision. Minutes stretched on before he finally spoke up, “The Board will reconsider the policy.” But no hope stirred in me — “reconsider” sounded more like a polite way to end the conversation. I nodded faintly and headed for the door.
At the end of the day, Mr. Smith brought me the news about the scholarship jacket. “Congratulations, kid. The Board has made an exception for you.” Mr. Smith winked and patted me on the back. “You spoke bravely for yourself — don’t lose that voice.” His words echoed like a victory bell in my chest. I sprinted to the bean field and told the good news to Grandpa between ragged breaths. Crumbling warm earth through my fingers, I saw it clearly: courage is a seed; once you plant your voice, the world shifts an inch toward justice, and that inch is enough to grow a life upon.
