For centuries, the Yangtze River has been home to many fish species. But too much fishing had pushed some native fish to the edge of disappearing. To save the river, China started a ten-year fishing ban (禁令) on the Yangtze in 2021. Now, new data shows the ban is working effectively.
Law enforcement along the river has been strengthened. In 2025, criminal cases related to illegal fishing dropped by nearly 40 percent from the year before. Other illegal fishing cases fell by 65 percent from 2021 levels, showing that tougher measures are working. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, the river's ecosystem health improved between 2021 and 2025, compared with the period before the ban. This positive change means the long-term decline of fish resources has been successfully stopped.
The latest monitoring shows that from 2021 to 2025, a total of 351 native fish species were found in the Yangtze area. That is an increase of 43 species from the years just before the ban. In 2025 alone, the number of fish in the main stream was about twice as high as before the ban, which is a remarkable achievement.
The recovery is also good for local people. To support the ban, more than 230,000 fishermen have stopped fishing. The government has helped 141,000 of them find new jobs and provided pension(养老金) insurance for about 220,000. Those facing financial problems have also received temporary help to get through the transition.
Looking ahead, the government has a new action plan with 60 measures to further protect the river. These include restoring wetlands, protecting endangered species like the Yangtze finless porpoise and the Chinese sturgeon, and improving breeding technologies. Recently, about 550,000 young Chinese sturgeons were released into the Yangtze to help rebuild their population.
The fishing ban has given the Yangtze a much-needed break. With continued protection and public support, the river's future looks brighter than it has in decades.
12. What happened to the Yangtze River after the fishing ban was introduced?
A. The number of native fish species continued to drop.
B. The ecosystem health showed clear signs of recovery.
C. The government reduced law enforcement along the river.
D. Most fishermen refused to cooperate with the government.
13. How does the author show the effectiveness of the fishing ban in Paragraphs 2 and 3?
A. By listing figures. B. By giving examples.
C. By giving definitions. D. By explaining causes.
14. What can be learned about the government's new action plan for the Yangtze River?
A. It has successfully released all endangered species back into the wild.
B. It cares more about helping former fishermen than protecting fish species.
C. It focuses mainly on improving breeding technologies for endangered fish.
D. It combines habitat restoration with species protection and breeding efforts.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the passage?

Dear Tom,
With the World Reading Day coming, I am writing to share some related information with you. In a gesture to trigger students’ passion for reading and enrich our school life, our school held a series of wonderful reading-related activities last week.
To begin with, we had a book fair on the playground where different classes set up their booths, displaying a wide range of books. We could wander around, flip through the pages, and even exchange books with each other. What’s more, several well-known local authors were invited to give lectures, who talked about their writing experiences and the significance of reading in their lives.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Jim sat on the sofa. Mother’s Day was coming up, and he didn’t have a present. “How can I buy a present without any money?” he thought.
Jim picked up the newspaper that was lying on the sofa. He noticed a large advertisement on the front page. The local department store was sponsoring (赞助) a contest. “Tell us why your mom is special and win a shopping spree (疯狂购物) for her,” said the ad.
“This is perfect!” thought Jim. He ran to his room with the newspaper. Taking a pencil and a piece of paper from his desk, he started to write.
“My mom is the best mother in the world. She always makes a delicious lunch for me to take to school, and she never forgets my dessert. She reads as many books to me before bed as I want. She always remembers to check under the bed for monsters. And she gives the best hug, but never in front of my friends, who would laugh at me for hugging my mom.”
Jim liked what he had written. He copied it neatly and got an envelope and a stamp from his dad. He ran to the mailbox with his entry (参赛作品), “Mom will love having a shopping spree,” he thought.
Jim checked the mailbox every day for his prize. Days passed by, and then weeks. Soon it was the day before Mother’s day. Jim still hadn’t heard anything about the contest.
“What am I going to do now?” he wondered. He didn’t win a shopping spree for mum, and he still didn’t have any money. He had to think of something. Jim closed his eyes and scratched his hair and thought so hard that his head began to hurt.
Suddenly a perfect idea occurred to him.

【答案】
Suddenly a perfect idea occurred to him. “Why not write a letter to mum and show how much I love her?” He searched in his drawers and fortunately found a piece of beautiful paper. Sitting down straight on his chair, he began to write the letter in his best handwriting as a Mother’s Day present. “Dear Mom, I’m writing this to tell you that you are the best mother in the world...” With a sincere heart, Jim finished the letter and sealed it in an envelope, his lips curving into a smile.
The next morning, Jim handed his letter to his mom. Finishing reading the letter, his mom gathered him into her arms, her eyes wet due to happiness. “Thank you, my dear!” She cried out with great satisfaction, hugging Jim more tightly. Leaning against his mom’s shoulder, Jim slowly explained why he chose to write a letter as a gift. After hearing the reason, his mom gently ran her fingers through his hair, saying, “To me, your letter is better than a thousand shopping sprees.” Indeed, love should be made known to loved ones.

These funny couplets have encouraged many people to continue the Spring Festival tradition of hanging couplets and sticking gate-god pictures. Calligraphy, woodcut pictures and traditional paintings also gain in popularity among people born from 1995 to 2010.
Another rebounding (复苏的) tradition is wearing hanfu, a traditional garment of the Han people, often worn during festivals.
