When I was a little girl, I liked drawing, freely and joyously making marks on the walls at home. In primary school, I learned to write using chalks. Letters felt like delightful but meaningless patterns, another kind of drawing.
In secondary school, art was my favourite subject. I loved it so much that I thought I was good at it. For the art O-level exam I had to present an oil painting. I found it difficult, but still hoped to pass. I failed, with a low grade. I’d been over-confident. Now I’d been declared talentless.
But other channels of creativity stayed open: I went on writing poems. Still, I went to exhibitions often. I continued my habitual drawing, which I now characterized as childish doodling (乱画). In my 30s, I made painter friends and learned new ways of looking at art. However, I couldn’t let myself have a go at actually doing it. I took oil painting as the taboo(禁忌) high form I wasn’t allowed to practice.
One night, in my early 40s, I dreamed that a big woman in red approached me, handed me a bag of paints, and told me to start painting. The dream felt so real that it shook me. It was a form of energy, giving me back something I’d lost. Finally, I bought some oil paints.
Although I have enjoyed breaking my decades-long taboo about working with oil paints, I have discovered I now prefer chalks and ink. I let my line drawings turn into cartoons I send to friends. It all feels free and easy. This time around, I can accept my limitations but keep going.
Becoming a successful painter calls for being resolute. I realised I was always afraid of wanting too much. That dream reminded me that those fears and desires could encourage me to take risks and make experiments.
24. How did the author feel about the result of the art exam?
A. Scared.
B. Worried
C. Discouraged.
D. Pleased.
25. In her 30s, the author _______.
A. looked for a painting career
B. avoided oil painting practice
C. enjoyed abstract painting
D. practice child doodles
26. Which word would best describe the author’s dream?
A. Encouraging.
B. Relaxing.
C. Annoying.
D. Boring.
27. What can we learn from this passage?
A. Actions speak louder than words.
B. Dreams always show real life truly.
C. Hard work alone ensures success.
D. Creative expression involves confidence.

Properly drinking coffee or tea might help lower the risk of stroke (中风) and dementia (痴呆), according to a study of healthy people aged 50-74. This study was published on November 16 in the open-access journal PLOS Medicine.
Strokes are serious health events that cause 10% of deaths worldwide. Dementia is a term for symptoms that show a fall in brain function and is a major health issue globally, with high economic and social costs. Post-stroke dementia is when dementia symptoms appear after a stroke.
Yuan Zhang and his colleagues from Tianjin Medical University in China studied 365,682 participants from the UK Biobank. These participants were chosen between 2006 and 2010 and were followed until 2020. At the beginning of the study, participants reported how much coffee and tea they drank. During the study, 5,079 participants developed dementia and 10,053 had at least one stroke.
The study found that people who drank 2-3 cups of coffee or 3-5 cups of tea per day, or a combination of 4-6 cups of coffee and tea, had the lowest rates of stroke or dementia. Those who drank 2-3 cups of coffee and 2-3 cups of tea daily had a 32% lower risk of stroke and a 28% lower risk of dementia compared to those who drank neither coffee nor tea. Drinking coffee alone or with tea was also linked to a lower risk of dementia after a stroke.
The UK Biobank participants were relatively healthy compared to the general population, which might limit how well these results apply to everyone. Also, not many people in the study developed dementia or had a stroke, making it hard to apply these findings to larger groups. Lastly, while coffee and tea might help protect against stroke and dementia, the study cannot prove that drinking them causes these benefits. The authors said, “Our findings suggest that properly drinking coffee and tea, separately or together, is associated with a lower risk of stroke and dementia.”
28. What is the result of the study?
A. Stroke and dementia have led to many deaths.
B. Stroke and dementia result from coffee and tea drinking.
C. Properly drinking coffee and tea may lower the risk of stroke and dementia.
D. Drinking coffee and tea can be helpful in dealing with post-stroke dementia.
29. How did Yuan Zhang and his colleagues conduct the study?
A. By turning to the government for help.
B. By choosing volunteers all over China.
C. By picking out suitable samples from the UK.
D. By collecting samples from the UK Biobank.
30. What can we learn about the study from the last paragraph?
A. The help from the UK Biobank is limited.
B. The results of the study are widely accepted.
C. Most of the samples from the UK Biobank have severe diseases.
D. Samples from the UK Biobank are effective and enough for the study.
31. From which is the text probably taken?
A. A travel brochure. B. A health magazine.
C. A biology textbook. D. A fashion website.

The rapid spread of artificial intelligence has people wondering: who’s most likely to use AI in their daily lives? Many think it’s the tech-savvy – those who understand how AI works — who are most eager to adopt it.
Surprisingly, a new research, published in the Journal of Marketing, finds the opposite. People with less knowledge about AI are actually more open to using the technology. We call this difference in adoption the “lower literacy-higher receptivity” link (低识字率—高接受度). This link exists across different groups, backgrounds and even countries. For instance, our analysis of data from market research company Ipsos across 27 countries shows that people in nations with lower average AI literacy are more receptive towards AI adoption than those in nations with higher literacy.
The reason behind this link lies in how AI now performs tasks we once thought only humans could do. When AI creates a piece of art, writes a heartfelt response or plays a musical instrument, it can feel almost amazing — like it’s crossing into human land. Of course, AI doesn’t actually have human qualities. A chatbot might create an empathetic (共情的) response, but it doesn’t feel empathy (共鸣). People with more technical knowledge about AI understand this, making the technology less mysterious. On the other hand, those with less understanding may see AI as magical. We suggest this sense of magic makes them more open to using AI tools.
The lower literacy-higher receptivity link is strongest for using AI tools in areas where people are more likely to ask for emotional support or consulting. When it comes to tasks that don’t need human-like qualities, such as analysing test results, the pattern changes. To make the most of AI, businesses, educators and policymakers need to make this balance. And ideally, this will happen with respect that inspires many people to use this new technology.
32. Who are more likely to use AI in daily lives?
A. People who are tech-savvy. B. People in developed countries.
C. People with higher average AI literacy. D. People with less knowledge about AI.
33. How does the author prove the “lower literacy-higher receptivity” link?
A. By giving examples of AI applications.
B. By doing experiments on the use of AI.
C. By analyzing data from a market research company.
D. By interviewing people with different AI knowledge levels.
34. Why might people with low literacy about AI find it “magical”?
A. They believe AI has human emotions.
B. They do not understand how AI works.
C. They have seen AI perform tasks better than humans.
D. They are more likely to use AI for emotional support.
35. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. AI in Life: Who Uses It? B. AI Use: The Hidden Magic
C. AI Tools: Tech-savvy’s Choice D. AI’s Future: A Threat or An Opportunity?

Maybe you are an average student. You probably think you will never be a top student. This is not necessary so, however. 36 . Here’s how:
Plan your time carefully.
When you plan your work, you should make a list of things that you have to do. After making this list, you should make a schedule of your time. First your time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc., then decide a good, regular time for studying. 37 . A weekly schedule may not solve all your problems, but it will force you to realize what is happening to your time.
38 .
Look around the house for a good study area. Keep this space, which may be a desk or simply a corner of your room, free of everything but study materials. No games, radios, or television! When you sit down to study, concentrate on the subject.
Make good use of your time in class.
39 . Listening carefully in class means less work later. Taking notes will help you remember what the teachers say.
Study regularly.
When you get home from school, go over your notes, review the important points that your teacher is going to discuss the next day, read that material. 40 . If you do these things regularly, the material will become more meaningful, and you will remember it longer.
Develop a good attitude about tests.
The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. It helps you remember your new knowledge. The world won’t end if you don’t pass a test, so don’t be over worried.
There are other methods that might help you with your studying. You will probably discover them after you have tried these.
A. Find a good place to study
B. This will help you understand the next class
C. Anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to
D. Don’t forget to set aside enough time for entertainment

Taking swimming class was a must in Ren’s school and there was a pre-test in the third week and a final test in the last week according to the course plan.
That pre-test day came soon. The gym teacher blew the whistle (哨子) and four students dived into the swimming pool, racing to the other side, Then the next four were up, but only three stood on the diving board. “Where is Ren?” the gym teacher asked in concern.
Ren’s face turned red, and he was unsteady. He looked at the pool and stepped back. “You cannot make me do this!” he said.
Sadie, his teammate, patted him on the back gently. “You can do it! I will help you if you need it.” Ren stared into Sadie’s eyes and he calmed down.
“You can do it. You need to pass this class.” The gym teacher said, Ren stepped on the diving board, putting his goggles (护目镜) over his eyes, and the blue cap hid his red hair. The whistle blew and Ren stood there as the other three swam away. Then one boy ran and pushed Ren into the water.
Sadie glared at the boy, “Why would you do that?” A minute passed by and Ren still wasn’t coming up. Sadie jumped in and pulled him out of the water. She gave him CPR (心肺复苏), and it took a while until water came out of his lungs. Then finally he spat out the water and sat up, feeling dizzy.
Ren looked over at Sadie, who breathed a sigh of relief. “Oh, thank goodness! Why didn’t you use your arms or legs?” Ren stared away from Sadie, looking at the bottom of the blue pool, then looking up at the gym teacher who rolled his eyes. “I can’t swim. My parents never taught me as a kid. We are afraid of water.”

I’m afraid that they won't be able to handle it on their own. So I need new ideas on designing more effective teaching methods. Mr Carter, do you have any suggestions?
M: Well, you should probably read this book, written by J. K. Simmons. He is a professor who just transferred here last semester, but he is popular among students for his creative teaching methods. There’s an extensive range of learning approaches mentioned in the book, including approaches for team research, which might be helpful to you.
W: You mean dividing the students into groups to do research? I’ve never thought of this before. How does it work?
M: Professor Simmons has already demonstrated how efficient this approach can be. Basically, it aims to increase cooperation between students and help them develop their own voice and perspective.
W: I’ll check out the book as soon as possible.

【原文】W: Hello, everybody. My name’s Ann. Thanks for turning up to listen to me talk about my career. I hope that some of you will decide to take up nursing in the future because it is a fantastic job. First of all, I’ll tell you a little bit about how I got started. I had no idea what I wanted to do until I was about 14, when I was listening to a family conversation. My cousin was talking to my dad and telling him all about how much she enjoyed her work. She was a nurse in a busy hospital. And I thought, yeah, that’s exactly what I’d like to do. When I told my teachers that’s what I decided, they were very encouraging. But they did say that although I had always got good marks in English and biology, I’d have to get a little better at math, or I wouldn’t be able to do the job. Well, I must say, it wasn’t easy being a student nurse. It involved lots of late nights staying up to do my coursework. But I’d known it would be like that. Anyway, I think I have one of the best jobs in the world. My sister is an accountant, and although she earns far more than I do, I think my job is much more rewarding.

After gym class Sadie asked Ren gently why he was afraid of water. Hesitating for a second, he shared an experience that he was once narrowly drowned in the river. “Let’s face and overcome it together.” Sadie said firmly. From then on, Sadie tried all means to help Ren. Gradually Ren overcame his fear and he swam freely in the pool. Sadie encouraged him to take part in the coming final examination. When that day came, Ren stepped on the diving board and he kept calm and attentive.
The gym teacher blew the whistle and this time Ren dived bravely. He swam to the other side with incredible speed and technique. The gym teacher walked to the other side of the gym and knelt down “Incredible, Ren!”. The gym teacher helped him out of the water, shaking his hand excitedly and cheerfully. “Congratulations, you made it!” Ren hugged his teacher tightly and waved to Sadie gratefully with tears in eyes.
