Chinese calligraphy is a special and important part of Chinese traditional culture. It is the art of writing Chinese characters in a beautiful and meaningful way. With a history of thousands of years, it has been passing from one generation to another and is deeply loved by people at home and abroad.
In ancient times, calligraphy was not only a way to record information and express ideas but also a kind of elegant art. People used bamboo, paper, brushes and ink as basic tools to write wonderful works. To become a good calligrapher, one has to practice for many years. He must control the brush well, pay attention to every line and show his true feelings through beautiful and lively lines.
There are several main styles of calligraphy. Some are smooth and beautiful, while others are free and powerful. Each style shows its special charm. Great calligraphers are highly respected like famous artists. Today, many schools offer calligraphy classes to help students learn it. Students learn to write carefully, practice patiently and understand the beauty and culture behind Chinese characters.
However, with the wide use of computers and smartphones, fewer and fewer people write by hand in daily life. Some people are worried that this traditional art will be lost little by little. Luckily, more and more young people realize its great value. They take different courses and practice it in their free time. Leaf carving is an ancient form of folk art in China. Artists use natural fallen leaves to create wonderful works. This art is special because artists follow the leaves’ natural shapes and vein lines (纹路) to work.
I first watched leaf carving in the studio of Chen Lining, a famous artist in Jiaozuo, Henan. He sat quietly with a brush and a small knife, focusing all his attention on a big leaf. The common fallen leaf seemed to get a new life in his hands.
Chen Lining told us that making a leaf carving has simple steps: choosing leaves, carving, polishing and pressing. First, pick suitable leaves. The best leaves have clear veins, a wide surface and even small holes. These natural marks are perfect for carving. After choosing leaves, wash them carefully and put them in water to keep them soft. Dry leaves break easily, so this step is very important.
The hardest part is carving. Artists watch the natural vein lines closely and use a small knife to cut out beautiful patterns little by little. This work needs a steady hand and a long-term focus. One small mistake can break the whole leaf and ruin the work. When carving is finished, workers polish the leaf and press it flat. Finally, a common fallen leaf turns into a wonderful art piece. With careful hands and good skills, they make lovely and amazing patterns on thin leaves.
Leaf carving tells us that small and common fallen leaves can become special and beautiful artworks. It is a perfect way to mix nature and art together. We just need creative ideas and love for nature.
6.Which question does the first paragraph answer?
A.Who invented leaf carving? B.What is leaf carving?
C.When did leaf carving first appear? D.How do artists make leaf carving?
7.How do artists carve a leaf?
A.They color the leaf with brushes first.
B.They follow vein lines and cut patterns with a knife.
C.They press the leaves flat before they cut the fallen leaves.
D.They choose dry leaves with large holes to make carving easier.
8.What can we infer from the passage?
A.It is easy to pick leaves for carving.
B.The leaf won’t break while carving.
C.A lot of practice is needed for leaf carving.
D.Artists can finish a leaf carving in just a few minutes.
9.What does the writer want to tell us by introducing the leaf carving?
A.To study different kinds of leaves. B.To encourage people to do leaf carving.
C.To show the difficulty of leaf carving. D.To have a creative mind and love nature.
6.第一段写道“Leaf carving is an ancient form of folk art in China. Artists use natural fallen leaves to create wonderful works.”
7.原文第四段明确指出“Artists watch the natural vein lines closely and use a small knife to cut out beautiful patterns little by little.”
8.原文第四段提到“This work needs a steady hand and a long time focus. One small mistake can break the whole leaf and ruin the work.” The best leaves have clear veins...”
9.文章最后一段写道“We just need creative ideas and love for nature.”
C
Inner painting, a traditional Chinese art, is recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage Artists create works on the inner surface of the glass bottle with special brushes, which need to be thin enough to enter the tiny bottles.
These miniature masterpieces (微型杰作) often carry deep cultural meanings. The designs on the painting stand for people’s wishes for good luck and a happy life. The most popular ones are landscapes, followed by flowers and birds.
Creating an inner painting requires great skills. Artists must work through the bottle’s narrow neck and carefully paint inside in a reverse order. They start with foreground details before adding backgrounds, opposite to the usual way of painting. In this way, the final artwork looks proper and correct when it is seen from the outside. Inner painting also needs high accuracy and patience. Any mistake means a complete restart. “It’s just like trying to draw a straight line when the ground is shaking,” an inner painting artist says. Most artists need years of training before creating great and fine pieces. They usually spend 2-3 years just practicing drawing basic lines.
Though inner painting has its cultural value and unique beauty, it still faces difficulties such as low interest among young people, limited market needs and fewer learners. Luckily, artists are trying to make it closer to our life. It is now used on everyday objects, like tea sets. A new type of brush has been invented to improve drawing speed. Young artists even make use of social media to spread their painting skills. Li Mei, for example, showed inner painting skills on social media and successfully attracted over 500,000 followers. “We hope it can be respected as a heritage but still alive in daily life,” Li explains. They also expect inner painting courses to be offered at school for young people to take in the near future.
10.What kind of brush is used for inner painting?
A.Brushes made of glass. B.Thick and short brushes.
C.Extremely thin brushes. D.Brushes with sharp ends.
11.Which of the following themes might be the most popular design for inner painting?
A.Living creatures. B.Natural scenery.
C.Famous people. D.Historical events.
12.The underlined word “reverse” in Paragraph 3 probably means _________.
13.What can we infer from the sentence “It’s just like trying to draw a straight line when the ground is shaking”?
A.Other tools and special materials are needed for inner painting.
B.Artists need to work together as a team to finish the perfect artwork.
C.Inner painting is such a difficult task that it needs skills and patience.
D.It is very dangerous for the artists to take up inner painting.
14.How many ways have the artists tried to save inner painting in the last paragraph?
A.One. B.Two. C.Three. D.Four.
15.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To explain technical steps of creating the inner painting.
B.To show the value and challenges of a traditional art.
C.To compare different Chinese intangible cultural heritages.
D.To call on us to save the traditional Chinese art together.
【答案】10.C 11.B 12.D 13.C 14.C 15.B
10.根据题干关键词“brush”可定位至首段尾句“Artists create works…with special brushes, which need to be thin enough to enter the tiny bottles.”,“which”引导限制性定语从句修饰“brush”,刷子要足够细才能伸进小瓶子。
11.定位到第二段“The most popular ones are landscapes, followed by flowers and birds.”
12.根据下文“They start with foreground details before adding backgrounds, opposite to the usual way of painting.”
13.“It’s just like trying to draw a straight line when the ground is shaking”
14.定位到“Luckily, artists are trying to make it closer to our life.”第一个方式“ It is now used on everyday objects, like tea sets”;第二个方式“A new type of brush has been invented to improve drawing speed.”;第三个方式“Young artists even make use of social media to spread their painting skills.”;接下来是第三个方式的举例说明,所以一共提到了三种方式。

Shehuo (社火), meaning “Community Fire”, is a folk activity showing people’s happiness and good wishes. Farmers usually perform it outdoors during the Spring Festival and Lantern Festival, mainly in northern China such as Shanxi, Shaanxi and other places. It includes many kinds of performance such as dragon dance, stilt walking, land boating dance, yangge dance, weifeng drum dance, and so on. There are also wonderful evening activities like iron flower beating and firework shows.
Stilt Walking (踩高跷)
Performers usually dress up as ancient people. They tie two wooden stilts to their feet, which makes them taller than others. They walk on stilts carefully in the streets. However, it is not easy to put on a good show. Performers need to have some skills and a good sense of balance when performing, or they will fall easily and get hurt.
Land Boating DanceA land boat is usually made of bamboo and cloth. During the show, people dress up as boatmen and passengers. They carry the “boat” and move on land to make it look like a real boat travelling on water. They dance to music and create a happy and festive atmosphere. This art form is very popular among people.
Iron Flower BeatingIt is also called “Iron Pouring Art”. People use this art to celebrate harvests, weddings and the Spring Festival. Performers must work together to get ready for the show. First, they melt iron in a crucible (炉缸) with fire until it becomes hot liquid (液体). Before the performance, they wear thick cowhide clothes and straw hats to keep safe from the heat and sparks. Then they use long willow scoops to take the hot molten iron. At last, they pour the iron onto walls or throw it into the sky. It makes beautiful sparks as high as 10 meters. Some artists even make amazing “fire trees” and “iron waterfalls”.
The Performance Process
These colorful activities win people’s hearts deeply. When people are asked about their favorite shehuo activities, they share their thoughts with excitement.
Li Lei, a local citizen, says, “I like stilt walking best. I think the performers look cool and amazing when walking on tall stilts. It is not easy to keep balance, so it shows their great courage and skills.”
Zhang Hua, a volunteer, says, “I enjoy Iron Flower Beating the most. I am deeply attracted by the bright sparks, beautiful fire trees and fantastic iron waterfalls in the dark sky. It is the most wonderful and unforgettable part of shehuo.”

Shehuo is more than just a show. It represents the unity and celebration spirit of local communities, passing down cultural values from generation to generation. And it also carries people’s wishes for a better life and a bright future.
