Every week, a group of students from Cherry Creek High School come to help old people with anything technology-related (科技相关的) at an old people’s home. The volunteers are from a group called Generation Technology. It was set up by students a few years ago.
When the holidays come, the volunteers help the old keep in touch with their family. “A lot of people don’t live close to their family, and it’s a really important thing. So being able to set up video communication and bring people closer during the holidays is meaningful,” said Sunker, the leader of the group.
The students also give the old advice for preventing scams (预防诈骗). People often get calls that they don’t know and the students can give them some useful advice. It’s something that old people like Sandy Washington are thankful for. “I think a lot of old people here have difficulty using modern technology,” Sandy Washington said.
The students are helping with video communication or teaching them about new apps on their phones. That’s also helping form strong relationships between the young and the old. With dangerous temperatures, many people went to the store to pick up extra food and blankets. But for many seniors, that’s simply impossible. Programs like Meals on Wheels deliver food and make sure everyone has what they need to stay warm.
As temperatures hit a record low today, the task of Meals on Wheels volunteers is even more important as they pack up hot meals.
“It needs to be done, so like I said, I’ve been doing it for four years. Winter, summer, I haven’t stopped,” said Kishore Chukkla, a volunteer with Meals on Wheels.
Richard Henry, 70, is one of those seniors who needs a meal delivery. For him, it means a lot. “Of course. As a veteran (退伍老兵) and as someone who’s up in age, it’s always good to know that there are people out there who really care and who really think about you. Because when you get old, people are likely to forget about you,” Henry said.
On days when the temperature gets dangerously low, Meals on Wheels volunteers must brave the cold to check on those who need help.
“It’s hard for people that are homebound to get out on a nice day, let alone a day like this, so it is surely important for us to make sure that they have the food that they need, that someone is checking on them, to make sure that they have heat and that it’s turned on,” said Austin.
“When you have a volunteer, good people take the time to volunteer to do this. I don’t know what most people think about it, but I appreciate it,” Henry said.
Meals on Wheels still needs more help. They’re looking for volunteers, so if you want to lend a hand, please visit volunteer.vnatexas.org to learn more.

How can I become a better person? This question has been in my head for long. As students, we spend most of our time studying. I know learning at school, of course, makes us better persons, but I always dream of doing more.
Last year, I got to know a group of autistic (患自闭症的) children. We called them “the Snails (蜗牛)”. It was hard to communicate with them at first, because they wouldn’t like to. After a two-week training, I became more skilled. I got closer to them day by day. To my surprise, I found that every one of “the Snails” had his or her own talent. And their colorful pictures on the wall attracted my special attention, though it was difficult to tell what they were trying to express.
Moved by their pictures, I decided to hold a charity (慈善) sale. We walked on the busy street, selling their creative pictures. We sold 60 pictures that day. People thought their pictures were full of imagination.
Back to the question about how to become a better person, I think I am lucky enough to get my own answer.

For Sandy Washington, seeing the students every week is something she looks forward to. “We really welcome these kids,” she said. “I feel they’re family, just like my own kids or grandkids. It’s very nice,” she said.

26.第二段提到“A lot of people don’t live close to their family... So being able to set up video communication and bring people closer during the holidays is meaningful”,说明很多老人住得离家人远,所以学生帮老人和家人保持联系(视频通话)很有意义。
27.第三段指出“The students also give the old advice for preventing scams... the students can give them some useful advice”,说明学生通过给老人提供有用的建议来帮助他们预防诈骗。
28.根据第三段 It’s something that old people like Sandy Washington are thankful for.以及最后一段Sandy Washington说“I feel they’re family, just like my own kids or grandkids”,可知她认为志愿者是“有帮助的(Helpful)”。

It was a cold winter evening. I was walking home from school when I saw an old lady standing at the bus stop. She was carrying a heavy bag and looked very cold. I thought she might need help, so I went over to her.
“Excuse me, are you waiting for the bus?” I asked. The old lady nodded. “I have been waiting for almost half an hour, but the bus hasn’t come yet,” she said. Her voice was shaking because of the cold.
① _________ “Don’t worry. I live nearby. My parents are not at home, but you can come to my house and wait for the bus. It’s warm inside,” I said. The old lady looked surprised, but she agreed happily.
When we got to my house, I made her a cup of hot tea. She told me that she was going to visit her sick daughter in the hospital. She wanted to bring her some homemade soup. We talked while waiting for the bus. ② _________ She told me stories about when she was young. She said that when she was a girl, she also used to help people in need.
About twenty minutes later, the bus came. ③ _________ She thanked me again and again for my help. When she got on the bus, she turned around and gave me a big smile. That smile warmed my heart more than any tea could.
