A Blog: My Experience in China
Posted by Robert on 15 March
I’m a student from the UK. I have been in China for one month, and I’d like to share some interesting differences in manners between the UK and China.
Saying “Thank you”
In the UK, we say “thank you” in almost every situation — when someone holds the door for us, gives us a cup of tea, or even just passes the salt. But in China, people don’t say “thank you” as often, especially between close friends and family. They believe that saying “thank you” too much can make the relationship seem cold.
Responding to compliments (称赞)
If someone compliments you in the UK, you usually say “thank you” and accept it. For example, “Your English is very good!” “Thank you!” But in China, people are more modest (谦逊的). They might say “No, no, my English is still poor” or “I still have a lot to learn.” This is not because they are not happy — it’s just a way to show modesty.
At the dinner table
In the UK, when you have dinner at someone’s home, the host usually puts the food on the table and everyone helps themselves. You should not take too much food at once. But in China, the host often serves food to the guests. They may put food directly into your bowl. It’s a way to show hospitality (好客). It is polite to accept it, even if you are full.
Now I understand the saying: “When in Rome, do as the Romans do.” Respecting local customs is the key to good manners.
