Difficult Points: Analyze how the writer creates a tense and fearful atmosphere; express personal thoughts in English. 学情分析 本堂课授课对象为高一学生,他们在本单元已经有了关于自然灾害话题的认知和积累,但是基础比较薄弱,尤其在阅读能力和语言输出能力上,且对于庞贝古城所经历的火山爆发认知较少,本堂课希望学生能够在有效分析文本内容的基础上,感悟作者塑造灾难之惨烈的写作手法,并能将庞贝昔日的繁盛和如今灾难过后的萧条形成对比,深刻感悟自然面前人类的渺小,要敬畏自然。 教学准备 课件 视频 音频 教学过程 Step 1 Lead-in (3 mins) 1. Play a short video about the ruins of Pompeii. 2. Free talk: What happened to Pompeii? What natural disaster caused it? 3.Lead in the topic and title: The Last Days of Pompeii. Step 2 Pre-reading: Prediction (5 mins) 1. Title thinking: Why “last days” not “last day”? It includes before, during and after the eruption. The passage is in time order. 2. Picture prediction: What was Pompeii like before the disaster? Step 3 While-reading (22 mins) 1. Before the Eruption (Para. 1) (6 mins) Fast reading: Find words about the city life. Key words: shops, palaces, theatre, ships, etc. Conclusion: Pompeii was a busy and prosperous Roman city. 2. During the Eruption (Paras. 2–4) (10 mins) Group work: 3 groups, 3 tasks- Group 1: Strong verbs (roll, break, shoot…) → powerful scenes Group 2: Writing skills (simile, repetition, short sentences) → tense feeling Group 3: Series of actions (run, push, press…) → people’s fear Share and summarize. 3. After the Eruption (Para. 5) (6 mins) Read and answer: (1) How long was Pompeii buried? (2) What was it like when unearthed? (3)What can we learn from the ruins? Step 4 Post-reading: Summary & Sharing (8 mins) 1. Summary of the passage: time order; writing skills. 2. Discussion: What can help us survive natural disasters? 3. Key ideas: learn knowledge, respect nature, stay calm, work together. 4. Mini sharing: 2–3 students express their feelings.
