My wife and I homeschool our 11-year-old son, and I spend lots of time playing and doing things with him. I used to think of this as special time. Recently, however, I have noticed that during many of those hours, I have only part of my attention on him and am often distracted by things that need doing. This past year, I talked with him about setting aside a time when I would just follow his lead in play, when he would get to decide what happened and how it happened. Like the date, we arranged to do it once a week for an hour, after his guitar lesson.
During the first few special times, he wouldn’t be able to think of what he wanted to do with me or how he wanted to use my full attention. I would get antsy and would have to stop myself from making suggestions. He would often say, “Well what would you like to do?” or “Let’s go do this, you’ll like this.” I started to notice what a struggle it was for him to just want something for himself. He was always considering me first.
Often biting my tongue and sometimes failing, I tried to wait until he could figure out something that he really wanted to do. During some of the first special times, he decided to go shopping and just look at the things he wanted. Recently he has chosen to use my attention to perfect skills — we go out and throw a baseball for an hour. Often I have to stop myself from teaching or from asking him to keep trying when he is ready to move on quickly to something else.
As the year continues, I watch my son become more confident and experiment more with how he can use me, now that he knows he has me for a fixed time. If my attention wanders, he’ll remind me that it is his special time.

A. Learning to Be a Wise Parent

Have you ever obeyed the suggestions of a digital writing assistant to replace a word or restructure a sentence? Before the appearance of digital tools, you’d probably have turned to a dictionary for the same assistance.
Dictionaries enable us to write not with fail-safe convenience but with originality and a point of view. While AI assistants produce phrases and statements so writers don’t have to think them up, dictionaries provide us with the knowledge to use language ourselves in expressive and potentially infinite (无穷的) ways. They place choice and authority literally in human hands, forcing us to discover how we want to explain ourselves and our ideas to the world.
The abundance of digital writing assistants gives greater urgency to debates about what a dictionary should be. In 1946, George Orwell described good writing as “picking out words for the sake of their meaning,” a practice that dictionaries facilitate while digital writing programs discourage. Writers consulting a dictionary make a choice, while writers guided by an app have their choices made for them. The digital-native approach delivers hands-off, derivative (衍生的) communication. The other requires leafing through pages without knowing exactly where you’ll end up. Without dictionaries to provide us with a guide to English’s potential, writing that way is nearly impossible.
Our ability to express ourselves is critical — it helps us define who we are. Dictionaries aid us in achieving this: They categorize our unique ways of thinking through language. I’m a Canadian; my feeling of pride in my native land is enhanced by small verbal Canadianisms like eaves trough or serviette, which are well-documented in dictionaries but rarely used by AI chatbots, for the most part.
As digital writing extends deeper into our lives and minds, we need dictionaries more than ever. Abandoning dictionaries and embracing mechanized writing would weaken our capacity for collective identity quite as much as the ability to express ourselves.
33. What might be a distinct feature of dictionaries according to the author?
A. They promise fail-safe phrases.
B. They promote creative writing.
C. They possess academic authority.
D. They provide ready-made expressions.
34. What does the author imply about writers who rely on digital writing assistants?
A. They write with greater efficiency and accuracy.
B. They produce more original and expressive texts.
C. They lose the opportunity to make meaningful choices.
D. They are more likely to follow George Orwell’s advice.
35. Why does the author mention “eaves trough” and “serviette” in paragraph 4?
A. To show how AI aids us in expressing.
B. To indicate the weakness of dictionaries.
C. To illustrate how language use affects identity.
D. To celebrate the diversity of Canadian English.
36. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Why Keep Your Dictionary?
B. How to Deal with Digital Writing?
C. Who Uses Writing Assistants?
D. What to Expect from Dictionaries?
D
The question of how art might make us more empathic (有同理心的) citizens is a growing interest for art institutions, artists, and cultural policy makers.
Despite high interest, there is surprisingly little data on whether visiting an exhibition or viewing an artwork really does anything, especially regarding its effect on how we think and behave. What kind of effects we might find and how long effects might last are entirely unknown.
To answer these questions, a research team assessed (评估) visitors’ experiences for the exhibition, Show Me Your Wound, organized by Johanna Schwanberg and Klaus Speidel at Dom Museum Wien. The exhibition used a combination of modern and historical art to focus on the topic of vulnerability (脆弱性). Through the exhibition, Johanna Schwanberg and Klaus Speidel aimed to encourage visitors to reflect on a key issue of humankind and to bring about positive change.
Researchers first stopped people walking out of the museum and asked if they would like to participate in exchange for a free ticket. Visitors accepting the ticket were asked to report on their thoughts and feelings regarding their empathic concern for others — both immediately before and after the visit. The results showed that, indeed, the exhibition increased empathy in visitors.
The research team also used an experience sampling method (ESM) technique with the same exhibition, in which a second group of 41 people used an app on their mobile phones to report their thoughts and actions each day. When comparing the period before the visit to the period after, the two-week results showed that participants reported trying to consider others’ feelings and reflecting more about themselves for the following week. Most of these changes lasted for the rest of the week.
“These results provide evidence that even a brief visit to an art exhibition can make a detectable change. Even when the impact has a shorter duration, it still is positive,” noted Matthew Pelowski from University of Vienna. “If we think about all of the thousands of people who might visit an exhibition, if everyone thinks a little bit more of others, that can lead to a powerful effect.”
37. What did the researchers do first?
A. They followed visitors for two weeks. B. They interviewed exhibition visitors.
C. They gave all passers-by free tickets. D. They used apps to measure visitors’ empathy.
38. Why did the researchers ask participants to use an app?
A. To encourage kindness. B. To send timely guidance.
C. To limit their screen time. D. To track their responses.
39. Which of the following may be Pelowski’s expectation?
A. Further investigation will be carried out. B. Art museums do more to appeal to visitors.
C. Joint efforts should be made in the future. D. More and more people visit art exhibitions.
40. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Vulnerability may bring about positive change.
B. Viewing an artwork affects people’s daily behavior.
C. Visiting art exhibitions can make us more empathic.
D. Empathy is a necessary element for art appreciation.

W: How do people find posts they like?
M: They follow users or search for topics. Q-Post suggests posts, too.
W: Do people talk to each other there?
M: Yes, but only in the comments. Some users discuss news, while others just share funny messages.
W: Do posts stay there forever?
M: No. Some platforms keep posts for a year and even forever, but Q-Post removes them in 30 days.
W: Sounds interesting.

Today I’d like to introduce you to one of the most remarkable composers of our time: Tan Dun.
Tan Dun is a true pioneer in blending Eastern and Western musical traditions. Tan started out as a musician for the Peking Opera. However, he fell in love with Western classical music and began writing classical Western operas that show a strong touch of Chinese music. Like his operas, the scores for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Hero use Chinese musical instruments and styles in a Western classical music score. The music follows all the rules of most film scores — its purpose is to tell you how to feel about the action in the film and to help tell the story. However, perhaps because of his classical music background, his scores can stand alone as works of art without needing a film to support them.
His most famous achievement came in 2001 when he won the Academy Award for Best Original Score, becoming the first Chinese composer to win an Oscar.
Tan Dun is also known for his “organic music” — he makes music with water, paper, and stones. He turns water basins into musical instruments, creating sounds that have never been heard before.
In short, what I admire most about Tan Dun is his belief that music can come from anywhere and that East and West can speak the same musical language. As he once told the Global Times, “Music is an ambassador to the world and the best language that can be shared by different kinds of people from different cultural backgrounds. We are excited to share music and the specific voice of today, the voice of nature, the voice of peace and the voice of friendship.”

B
29. What does the author think is a key feature of “special time”?
A. Enough time.
B. Constant guidance.
C. Undivided attention.
D. Practical arrangement.
30. What does the underlined word “antsy” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. impatient. B. ashamed. C. thrilled. D. confused.
31. What did the author’s son tend to do during the first few special times?
A. Carry out enjoyable activities.
B. Follow the author’s suggestions.
C. Figure out what he wanted to do.
D. Consider the author’s preferences.
32. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Learning to Be a Wise Parent
B. The Magic of Companionship
C. More Than Just Being Together
D. A Special Time of Homeschooling
C 30. A 31. D 32. C

根据第一段“This past year, I talked with him about setting aside a time when I would just follow his lead in play, when he would get to decide what happened and how it happened. Like the date, we arranged to do it once a week for an hour, after his guitar lesson.(去年,我和他谈过留出一段时间,在这段时间里,我会在游戏中听从他的指挥,他会决定发生什么以及如何发生。就像约会一样,我们安排每周一次,在他的吉他课之后,时长一个小时)”以及第二段“During the first few special times, he wouldn’t be able to think of what he wanted to do with me or how he wanted to use my full attention.(在最初的几次特殊时间里,他想不出他想和我一起做什么,也不知道如何让我全神贯注)”可知,作者认为“特殊时间”的关键特征是全神贯注的陪伴。
根据第二段“During the first few special times, he wouldn’t be able to think of what he wanted to do with me or how he wanted to use my full attention. I would get antsy and would have to stop myself from making suggestions.(在最初的几次特殊时间里,他想不出他想和我一起做什么,也不知道如何让我全神贯注。我会变得antsy,不得不阻止自己提出建议)”可知,儿子想不出做什么,作者会变得没有耐心,想要提出建议,所以antsy意思是“没有耐心的”,即impatient。
【31题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“He was always considering me first.(他总是先考虑我)”可知,在最初的几次特殊时间里,作者的儿子倾向于考虑作者的喜好。
【32题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“This past year, I talked with him about setting aside a time when I would just follow his lead in play, when he would get to decide what happened and how it happened. Like the date, we arranged to do it once a week for an hour, after his guitar lesson.(去年,我和他谈过留出一段时间,在这段时间里,我会在游戏中听从他的指挥,他会决定发生什么以及如何发生。就像约会一样,我们安排每周一次,在他的吉他课之后,时长一个小时)”以及最后一段“As the year continues, I watch my son become more confident and experiment more with how he can use me, now that he knows he has me for a fixed time. If my attention wanders, he’ll remind me that it is his special time.(随着这一年的继续,我看着儿子变得更加自信,更多地尝试如何利用我,现在他知道他有一个固定的时间可以和我在一起。如果我的注意力不集中,他会提醒我这是他的特殊时间)”可知,文章讲述普通陪伴不等于有效陪伴,作者舍弃分心式相处,用专属全心时光陪伴孩子,让陪伴超越简单共处,带来孩子的成长蜕变。所以文章标题可以是“More Than Just Being Together(不仅仅是在一起)”。
C
B 34. C 35. C 36. A

根据第二段中“While AI assistants produce phrases and statements so writers don’t have to think them up, dictionaries provide us with the knowledge to use language ourselves in expressive and potentially infinite (无穷的) ways.(虽然人工智能助手会生成短语和语句,这样作家就不必去想,但字典为我们提供了知识,让我们能够以富有表现力和无限的方式自己使用语言。)”
根据第三段中“Writers consulting a dictionary make a choice, while writers guided by an app have their choices made for them.(查阅字典的作家会做出选择,而由应用程序指导的作家的选择是由程序为他们做出的。)”
根据第四段“Our ability to express ourselves is critical — it helps us define who we are. Dictionaries aid us in achieving this: They categorize our unique ways of thinking through language. I’m a Canadian; my feeling of pride in my native land is enhanced by small verbal Canadianisms like eaves trough or serviette, which are well-documented in dictionaries but rarely used by AI chatbots, for the most part.(我们的自我表达能力至关重要 —— 它帮我们界定自我身份。
通读全文,尤其是根据最后一段“As digital writing extends deeper into our lives and minds, we need dictionaries more than ever. Abandoning dictionaries and embracing mechanized writing would weaken our capacity for collective identity quite as much as the ability to express ourselves.(随着数字写作更深入地渗透到我们的生活和思想中,我们比以往任何时候都更需要字典。放弃字典,接受机械化写作,会削弱我们的集体身份认同能力,就像削弱我们表达自己的能力一样。)”可知,文章主要讨论了在数字写作助手盛行的当下,词典对写作和表达自我及集体身份的重要性。“Why Keep Your Dictionary?(为什么要保留你的字典?)”适合作为文章标题。

B 38. D 39. D 40. C

上文“Has your mother or friend told you that you’re an ungrateful person? Do you feel unable to appreciate the world or people around you? Are you obsessed (着迷) with things you don’t have instead of being thankful for what you do have?(你是否被指出不懂感恩?是否无法欣赏身边的人与世界?是否执念于未拥有的事物而不知珍惜当下?)”连续抛出相关问题,空处承接上文问题,且后文“If so”指代空格内容,空处和前文为顺接关系,说明读者可能存在上述情况,所以C项“你可能发现自己身处这些境况之中”符合语境。
【42题详解】
上文“So, how can you make giving thanks part of your daily routine?(那么你如何让感恩成为日常习惯?)”
上文“Stopping playing the victim is the first step you’re supposed to take.(停止扮演受害者是你需要迈出的第一步)”点明段落核心,下文“If you want to be grateful, stop complaining to the world, your teachers, your friends and your family about not putting themselves in your shoes, and focus on how much they’ve helped and cared about you.(如果你想心存感激,就不要再向世界、你的老师、你的朋友和你的家人抱怨没有设身处地地为自己着想,而要关注他们对你的帮助和关心)”介绍不要抱怨他人、要懂得感恩。
上文“Whether you’re helping clean up a local park, working in a soup kitchen, or teaching children or adults in your community to learn to read, your viewpoints on life will change positively.(无论打扫公园、救济服务还是教学帮扶,你的人生观都会产生积极改变)”介绍志愿活动的意义。
下文“You shouldn’t always be good only to your close friends or family members. You can help a neighbor look for a lost dog. You can also help an old lady carry her groceries.(你不必只善待亲友,还可以帮助邻里、陌生人)”介绍日常行善的小事。

Hi everyone! Today I want to share one of my favorite Chinese traditional festivals with you — the Lantern Festival! It falls on the 15th day of the first lunar month, right after the Spring Festival. The Lantern Festival has a history of over 2,000 years. According to legend, it was originally a ceremony to worship the sky god, and over time it evolved into a celebration of family reunion and new beginnings.
On this special day, people enjoy a variety of customs. Families hang colorful lanterns and solve riddles written on them, which is both fun and educational. Children run around with glowing lanterns in the streets, filling the night with warmth and laughter. The most delicious part of the festival is eating tangyuan — sweet glutinous rice balls — which symbolize family togetherness and happiness.
To me, the Lantern Festival is more than just a celebration. It reminds me of the importance of family bonds and the beauty of our cultural heritage. I believe that by keeping these traditions alive, we pass on the wisdom and values of our ancestors to future generations.

$Today, i'd like to introduce you to one of the most remarkable composers of our time. Time done. Tandem is a true pioneer in blending eastern and western musical traditions and started out as a musician for the peaking Opera. However, he fell in love with western classical music and began writing classical western Operas that show a strong touch of chinese music industries. Like his Operas, the scores for crouching tiger, hidden dragon and hero use chinese musical instruments and styles in a western classical music school. The music follows all the rules of most film scores. Its purpose is to tell you how to tell you about the action in the film and to help tell the story. However, perhaps because of his classical music background, his schools can stand alone as works of art without needing a film to support them. His most famous achievement came in two thousand, one when he won the academy award for best original school, becoming the first chinese composer to win an Oscar. Tendon is also known for his organic music. He makes music with water, paper and stones. He turns water bases into musical instruments, creating sounds that have never been heard before. In short, what I admire most about tandem is his belief that music can come from anywhere, and the east and west can speak the same musical language. As he once told the global times, music is an ambassador to the world and the best language that can be shared by different kinds of people from different cultural backgrounds. We are excited to share music and the specific voice of today, the voice of nature, the voice of peace and the voice of friendship.
