When I was eight, I got a book about stars from my dad as a birthday present. That was the beginning of my lifetime interest.
I used to go outside with my mum on clear nights and look at the sky. It looked like black silk with a million diamonds(钻石) on it. In different seasons, we saw different groups of stars. In winter, the Belt of Orion appeared in the night sky, its three stars perfectly lined up and shining brightly. In summer, we saw Vega shine brightly as it got dark. Sometimes we saw stars shooting across the sky. How beautiful they were! Every time I looked up, I was amazed, as if the sky were speaking to me in its own way.
Studying the stars was great fun for me, and I was greatly curious(好奇的) about the night sky. Once I learnt a little, I soon wanted to find out more and more. I asked all kinds of questions, and my parents were always very patient with me. If they didn't know the answers, they would encourage me to find them in the library. So I read a lot about the topic, and my understanding increased as I grew older.
Now, studying the stars is my career. I host a TV programme called The Sky at Night. I use my knowledge to take people on a journey across the Milky Way, and I teach people about the different stars in a lively way. My TV programme has lasted more than 50 years, and I am really proud of that!
Actually, you can also turn your interest into your career. Anybody can achieve their dreams. You just have to enjoy what you do!

C.To show challenges of studying stars.
D.To encourage readers to follow their interests.

As the 2024 fall term began, a primary school in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, had a big surprise for its students. When arriving back at school, students found their usual desks and chairs replaced by multi-functional desk-chair combos(多功能课桌椅组合) that can be turned into makeshift(临时替代的) beds by pulling a few levers. During the summer vacation, such combos were installed in all 16 classes of the school's two grades.
The school's vice-headmaster explained, “Many parents told us that they hoped their kids could lie down for naps(小睡) at noon.” So, the school made a rest schedule. From 12:10 p.m. to 12:55 p.m., all students have the chance to enjoy a relaxing nap. “When students get enough rest, they can focus better during afternoon classes and activities,” the vice-headmaster added.
This didn't happen by accident. The local education authority has noticed students need naps, and the officers there are trying their best to solve the problem. Many schools around the area are adding these desk-chair pairs, so students can lie down for naps at noon.
Actually, as early as 2021, schools were encouraged to help children take good naps. Before this, students had to sleep with their heads on desks. Medical experts warn that the long-term risks of napping face down may not only cause back problems, but also increase eye pressure. But these lying-down desk-chairs can ensure the children's health.
Besides, teachers believe that every school should find the best way to help students nap.“Sleep plays an important role in students' physical and mental health. So schools and families need to work together to look after the well-being of students,” said one teacher.

( )10.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Family Roles in Education B.New Ways of Supporting Learning
C.Importance of Sleep for Students D.Comfortable Naps Provided bySchools
( )11.What is the text?

According to the latest survey, China is facing an aging population. In recent years, China's birth rate(出生率) has been at a low level. In 2024, the birth rate hit a new low—only 9,540,000 babies were born in the whole year.By 2040, China's population will be 1.35 billion, and about 30% of the people will be over 60 years old. The aging problem is getting worse and worse.
To deal with the big problem, ▲ . For example, the Chinese government has developed some policies to make sure the old people have enough money to live on. China is also building care centres right inside a community. And they offer basic medical care, like checking elder people's health.
All around China, many people are also doing their part to help the old people. Li Dongmei, a headteacher of a children's school, has run the school for 15 years. But last year, she opened a new centre for elderly people in Jinan.“Now more old people take my art classes than children did in the past,” she said. What's more, a store in Hebei also started selling more things for older people. “Young people come to buy gifts for their parents here,” a worker explained. Even toy companies are designing special products for older customers, such as puzzles to improve their memory.
Businesses are making changes to help solve the aging problem as well—from new services to special products for the old. These changes not only create jobs for young people but also help society better understand the elderly. Most importantly, people of all ages can live happily together in stronger communities.

①As we all know, people work together. Each person does his or her part to make the world better. A society needs many different kinds of workers in order to work well. Similar to humans, animals also need to work together to live better. In fact, nature gives most animals a social talent that serves a number of purposes.
②Many lions work together in groups. The females(雌性动物) need to search for food. Lions work in teams to catch other animals. They watch the animal in a circle and stop it from running away. Wolves also work in teams. They have a strong social order. They follow a leader and follow rules for the good of the group.
③The members of bee communities have special jobs. A queen bee, worker bees and other bees live in a beehive(蜂巢).The worker bees serve the queen, so the queen can lay eggs. If the queen doesn't lay enough eggs, the busy beehive would soon be empty. In bee communities, worker bees take on the job of protecting the beehive.
④Cows and birds often eat together to help one another. The birds eat the insects on the back of cows. And in return, the birds make a lot of warning noises. They will fly away if they find danger. Crocodiles(鳄鱼) and birds called plovers (千鸟) help each other in the same way. Crocodiles have very sharp teeth. After they eat, the tiny and harmful animals usually remain on their teeth. The plover will pick the animals out of a crocodile's teeth. This provides food for itself and helps clean the crocodile's teeth.

Halfway through the park, the motorcycle was out of gas and stopped working, leaving a woman and her daughter, 20 miles from home, hopeless.
Along came a motorcyclist. He slowed, got off his motorcycle and asked what the problem was. He had long hair and didn't look kind. When I told him about our trouble, he offered to help. I rode his motorcycle with my daughter and he pushed my motorcycle. Through hard work, we finally reached a small town next to the park.
On those days, most gas stations were closed on Sunday. They included the station in the town. My new friend jumped on his motorcycle to search for an open gas station. My nine-year-old son Leo was a picky eater who only liked chicken and yogurt. Encouraged by the movie Yes Day, before our Colorado ski trip last December, we agreed: we'd say yes to everything during the trip, including new food and experiences.
We started at the airport restaurant. I tried noodles while Leo had some vegetable salad. We didn't go back for more, but both agreed our choices were “not bad”.
The next day, after arriving at the hotel, I took Leo to meet his snowboarding coach. While he was having his lesson, I skied alone. On the first day, I tried easy green runs(滑道). The next day, remembering how Leo faced his fear of heights to ride the chairlift, I challenged myself to a harder blue run. I went slowly down but felt proud for trying.
Later, I wanted to try the outdoor hot spa pool. It was-6℃, and Leo hated being cold and wet, but I reminded him of our promise. “The hot water felt surprisingly comfortable, and the cold air made me feel alive though getting out was a great pain. It became a fun, fresh experience,” Leo said.
The trip taught us that small “yes” can bring us something unexpected. Since the trip, we've tried saying yes more at home. Leo now tries food like sushi while I've picked up old hobbies like painting. When we don't want to change, we joke, “Remember Colorado?” and then start to take action.
Pushing past our comfort zones(地带) has helped us live fuller lives, even if it sometimes means ending up cold and wet.

Greening the Desert
Minqin County, located in the city of Wuwei in Gansu Province, is between China's third and fourth largest deserts—the Badain Jaran and the Tengger. Local people plant suosuo trees, a plant that can survive in the desert, to prevent further desertification(沙漠化).
A number of local people have worked hard to turn the place into an oasis(绿洲). 27-year-old Zhong Lin is one of them. Growing up in Minqin, Zhong experienced sandstorms throughout his childhood. He once wanted to run away from his home town and build his future in southern China.
However, he changed his mind when he saw the villagers' hard life and the terrible environment there. He said, “Suddenly I understood—running away isn't the solution. Making a difference is the key.” After graduating from university in 2020, Zhong returned to his home town.“If suosuo trees can take root in sandstorms, why can't young people?” he wrote in his diary.
Since then, Zhong has tried planting suosuo trees in the desert. He planted 500 trees in 2021, but most of them died. So he studied, learnt from experienced villagers, and then planted more. After three years' efforts, the trees he planted are now growing well in the desert, turning the land green and lively.
To draw attention to his home town's environment, Zhong shared videos about tree planting online and started a “Please Plant a Tree in Minqin” activity. Encouraged by Zhong's tree-planting story, more and more volunteers from all over the country have come to Minqin to plant trees. Their common goal is to turn the desert into an oasis.

Dear Joseph,
Today you are ten years old. Everyone says it, but where has the time gone?
Life was quite hard after you were born, but I loved you with all of my heart. What I want to tell you now is how proud I am of the young man you have become.
You have overcome so many challenges and my heart is filled with pride each time—whether that be the continuing development of your speech and language, the way you progressed with your swimming, or your achievements in dance.
I asked a number of people who love you to think of a word they connect with you and I was surprised at their answers. Confident, kind, funny, lovely—to name but a few. I want you to remember these in years to come and if you ever have doubts about who you are.
You see, there is another word, autistic(患孤独症的), that people often use to describe you. If there is a time in the future when your understanding of the world around you has grown, I will explain to you what that actually means.
The way your brain works means that you see the world very differently from other people. You can't often say what you feel when you become upset. The things in disorder always trouble you.
You like having people around you, but friendship doesn't come easily. I know you have many people who enjoy your company, but you haven't quite yet worked out how to share those feelings.
At some point in the future, you will move to another school away from the people you have grown up with, but one that can hopefully prepare you more for your adult life.
At last, I want to say, the most fitting word to describe you, out of all that were provided, was this—“perfect”—you are and always will be.
Love,
Mummy

As middle school students, you must have heard about the book Tiangong Kaiwu. But how much do you know about its writer, Song Yingxing?
Song Yingxing was a famous ancient Chinese scientist during the late Ming Dynasty. He and his brother Song Yingsheng went to school together. Both of them were very smart. Song Yingxing won third place while his brother won sixth place in the Provincial Imperial Examination(乡试). Later, Song Yingxing and his brother took the National Imperial Examination, but they both failed.
In all, Song Yingxing sat for the National Imperial Examination(会试) six times. Unluckily, he never achieved success. The Ming Dynasty ended in 1644, but Song Yingxing and his brother refused to serve the Qing Dynasty. Song Yingxing lived a poor life until he died. In his final years, he wrote many articles against the new government.
Several years later, some Qing officials found these articles. They were so angry that they destroyed all of Song Yingxing's works. Luckily, the book Tiangong Kaiwu had already spread to many other countries, though it wouldn't find its way back to China until the end of the Qing Dynasty.

I was not surprised to hear that someone made fun of my look at my friend's birthday party. I laughed along, silently agreeing that I was not so good-looking. It was so embarrassing.
Over the next months, I became increasingly self-critical(自我批评的), at first only of my looks and then of almost everything else. As I kept focusing on my looks, I became unable to put myself into my schoolwork.
When a family friend got plastic surgery(整形手术), I told my parents that I wanted to do it, too. A nose job seemed like the answer to everything. To my surprise, my parents agreed and even thought of the surgery as a way to treat my snoring(打鼾).
Finally, the day arrived. I went to the hospital with my mother. In her mind, the surgery was small—she saw it as something quick and easy. But to me, it was more like a life-changing event.
Though I felt fine for the first few hours after I returned home, finally a burning pain was in my head. When I finally got the bandage removed, I cried the whole way home. I felt worse. Over the weeks, I began to feel foolish. I couldn't believe that I'd gone through all this just because some classmates had laughed at me.
It wasn't until I actually had the surgery that I realised that having a prettier nose wouldn't make me feel any better about myself. Now I realise that my self-worth is in many more valuable things: my sense of humour and the power of my mind. You might think all you need is a nose job to be beautiful, but what I want to tell you is that you don't need others to think you're beautiful to be worth something.

A.To stay in style. B.To make parents pleased.
C.To fit in with her friends. D.To solve her snoring problem.

A.Worried but hopeful. B.Fine and confident.
C.Surprised but doubtful. D.Upset and regretful.
( )11.What is the writer trying to tell us through her story?
A.Appearance plays a role in shaping our self-worth.
B.One should know their strengths and weaknesses.
C.Self-worth comes from inside rather than appearance.
D.Others' opinions about one's appearance are important.

Xiaohongshu, a popular Chinese app, is attracting users worldwide with its special “tingquan” activity. Users post photos holding a “tingquan” sign and ask others for advice. Many young people, including foreigners, are joining in this activity.
Z.J.Rubin, an American student, is a Xiaohongshu lover. He posted a photo, in which he looked tired and upset. And later, he got much nice advice from Chinese users, like “Be more confident!” and “Sleep more!” Another user, Zaria from Atlanta, said that she got useful ideas about her hairstyle on Xiaohongshu, while on other apps, people sometimes just left rude comments.
In fact, the difference comes from culture. In China, people believe constructive advice shows true care. They always try to offer help in a polite and honest way, like “This colour doesn't suit you. Try blue instead.” But in the West, people often give either empty likes(点赞) or hurtful comments, without offering real help.
Xiaohongshu creates a friendly space and is full of honest and kind users. Just as the social media expert Candise Lin said, “Young people today want real help, not just likes.” Xiaohongshu's success proves that being honest and caring can bring people closer. It's not about hiding the truth but sharing it in a way that helps others improve. This is why more and more people are using Xiaohongshu for real connections.

Deep under the Pacific Ocean lie coral reefs coloured by some algae(海藻) that live with corals. Corals usually provide nitrogen(氮) to algae, and in return they get carbon(碳), which gives them energy.
In the early 1980s, a huge heat wave turned more than 90 percent of these corals pale and lifeless. And it was believed that about 50 percent of reefs with beautiful corals might disappear by 2030. Heat waves warmed up the same Pacific waters in the late 1990s and again in 2015—2016, but scientists noticed that these heat waves didn't influence the reefs as badly as the first. Maybe corals have found a way to adapt.
Swimming to cooler waters is not a good choice for corals, for it makes them easily hurt by the changing climate. But corals are able to adapt. Some turn to those algae that can deal well with heat. Others can use rows of tiny hairs on their bodies to “fan” away too much harmful oxygen(O2) let out by stressed-out algae. Certain baby corals change their own metabolisms(新陈代谢) in order to fight the warming waters. But all the adaptation can protect themselves only to some degree.
After studying and understanding the adaptation, scientists are trying to find ways to help corals fight. If researchers can make corals accept algae that can deal with heat pressure or if they energise genes(基因) that can deal with heat pressure, it will raise the corals' chance of living through future ocean heat waves.
“When I go down to the sea and see a beautiful healthy reef with these colourful corals, I feel this pleasure of being in this underwater world,” a famous biologist says.“It will be really sad to see it dead. But that does drive you to want to use your skills and your love to help fight.”
( )8.What can we know from Paragraph 1?
A. Corals make algae more colourful.
B.Algae provide room for corals to live in.
C.Corals and algae depend on each other.
D.Algae produce nitrogen to influence corals.
( )9.What difficulty do corals face?
A.They cannot completely adapt to heat waves.
B.They cannot change their own metabolisms.
C.They have no ability to swim to cooler waters.
D.They have no ability to drive away harmful oxygen.
( )10.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.It's necessary to live with corals.
B.The ocean has become unhealthy.
C.We should try our best to save corals.
D.Making a study of the ocean is a must.
( )11.Which would be the best title for the text?
A.Corals Die Out B.Corals Fight Back
C.Corals Break Down D.Corals Come into Being

Wild Vegetables in Spring
As spring brings warmer weather, many Chinese families head to parks or fields to pick wild vegetables. Let's meet three common wild vegetables you might find in spring!
Shepherd's Purse(荠菜)
This plant has small white flowers. It grows early in spring and tastes fresh with a little spice. People in China use it to make dumplings, soups, or salads. It has lots of vitamin A and C, which are good for your eyes.
Purslane(马齿苋)
Purslane has thick, red stems and round leaves. You can find it in wet, sunny areas. Purslane is known for its sour and strong taste. People often cook it with garlic or add it to noodles. Did you know? It has more omega-3 fatty acids than any other leafy vegetable, making it great for heart health.
Dandelion(蒲公英)
The yellow flowers turn into soft white parts in late spring. The leaves look like those of the plantain(车前草), but they taste bitter(苦的). If you put them in hot water, they become less bitter. Many people drink dandelion tea because it helps their stomachs work better.
Picking wild vegetables is not just a way to enjoy nature's gifts; it's also a tradition that connects people with the seasons. Remember to always check which plants are safe to eat. Next time you're out in spring, keep an eye out for these green treasures!

Nowadays, teenagers spend a lot of time on social media. A recent survey shows that they spend about three hours a day on social platforms. Social media can be both good and bad for them.
On the good side, social media helps teenagers keep in touch with friends and family. They can share photos, videos, and messages easily. It also allows them to make new friends from different places. For example, a student in China can talk to a student in the United States. Social media is also a great place for teenagers to share their hobbies and interests. They can join groups where they can talk about things like music, sports, or books.
However, there are some problems with social media. Some teenagers feel stressed because they always want to post pictures showing beautiful holidays, fun parties and fashionable clothes. They see other people's posts and think their own lives are not good enough. This can make them feel sad or worried. Also, spending too much time on social media can affect their schoolwork and sleep.
Experts say parents and schools should help teenagers use social media in a good way. They suggest limiting the time teenagers spend on social media. For example, parents or schools can set a rule that teenagers can only use social media for one hour each day. Experts also suggest teaching teenagers how to be safe online. This includes not sharing personal information and being careful about who they talk to.

Last weekend I went camping after a long time of tiring work. The trip let me enjoy the clear lake and beautiful views in the woods. I felt the difference at once. I relaxed. I came home feeling rested and a little more cheerful. Going camping became a way to reduce the worry in my life.
I not only got a nice weekend, but I was also experiencing the benefits(益处) of nature to my mental(心理的) health—something that researchers and healthcare providers have long noticed. Research has found that as little as five minutes in nature can be helpful for people to reduce worry and feel happier. This means that we can get relaxed and feel better from stepping outside right away.
If we are unable to put our whole body and mind into nature—for example, by taking a weekend camping trip—we can still find chances in our area. We can take a five-minute break in a small park near our house or take a moment to sit under a large tree. We'll find them useful to refresh our mind. Our better feelings in later life can demonstrate the active influence of nature.
Besides simply spending more time outdoors, consider how we can enjoy nature even if we have no time to get close to nature. Listen to recorded bird songs or rainstorms instead of music, bring green plants or put pictures of natural beauty into our home. Although bringing nature indoors is quite different from a real outdoor experience, we can still feel nature and experience improved feelings.
Being in nature doesn't ask anything of us. Slow down, go outside, and notice what's around us. Listen, touch and smell, and we will really notice a benefit in our mental health.
( )8.Why does the writer mention the research in Paragraph 2?
A.To discuss the method of the health research.
B.To explain the influence of being outdoors.
C.To introduce the trip at the weekend.
D.To discuss the risks of outdoor activities.
( )9.What does the underlined word “demonstrate” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Improve. B.Give. C.Show. D.Control.
( )10.What can help people feel better according to the writer?
A.Putting plants at home. B.Listening to rock music.
C.Taking pictures of houses. D.Painting walls at home.
( )11.What is the writer's main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To describe personal worry about nature.
B.To share a story about nature with readers.
C.To encourage readers to get close to nature.
D.To explain the importance of protecting nature.

Make Your Own Noodles
What You'll Need
●1/2 cup of flour: All-purpose or bread flour, but bread flour makes chewier(更有嚼劲的) noodles.
●4 tablespoons of water
●1/4 teaspoon of salt
●Mixing bowl, rolling pin, pizza cutter or scissors
Adult helper for cutting and boiling
★Mix
Mix flour, water and salt in a bowl. Start with 2 tablespoons of water. Add a little water or flour when necessary. The well-mixed dough(面团) should not stick to your hands too much.
★Knead(揉,捏)
Spread a little flour on your table and knead the dough. Hit, fold, and pull it until it's smooth. Smooth dough leads to chewier noodles.
★Rest
Cover the dough and let it sit for about 30 minutes. This lets the dough develop.
★Roll
Spread some flour on the table. Cut your dough ball into 4 pieces.
Take one piece at a time, and roll it out with a rolling pin, as thin as you can.
★Cut
When it's pretty thin, cut your noodles narrow, thick, or whatever shape you like!
Some people fold the dough before cutting, so it's easier to make straight lines. When ready, unfold the noodles or they'll stick!
★Cook
You can cook your noodles right away or dry them for an hour for a bit chewier noodles. Cook fresh noodles in a pot of boiling water for just a few minutes. Fresh noodles cook much faster than dry ones. How long will depend on how thick your noodles are—thicker noodles take longer.
Eat up!

What makes an art form last for over 600 years? Kunqu Opera, one of China's oldest and most beautiful traditional operas, has done just that. However, like many traditional Chinese art forms, Kunqu Opera once faced challenges. Modern culture, like pop music and movies, took the centre stage, and fewer young people were interested in Kunqu Opera.
But things are changing now. With schools teaching traditional art and performers using social media, a new generation has started discovering the beauty of Kunqu Opera through online videos and live shows.
Fang Qian is one of these young fans. “Kunqu Opera is like a seed that grows as I learn more about it,” she says. “The more I study it, the more I discover about other parts of Chinese culture, like literature(文学), calligraphy, music, and painting. This helps me understand my cultural roots gradually.”
Fu Jin, a professor at the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts(中国戏曲学院), explains why Kunqu Opera is so special. “Among all Chinese operas, Kunqu Opera is one of the most beautiful and well-known,” he says. “It shows many parts of traditional Chinese culture, such as ways of thinking, social values, and lifestyles.” What cheers Professor Fu is that more young people are now falling in love with Kunqu Opera. They find it beautiful and amazing.

Lucy was a talented middle school student who loved to spend her time painting quietly. But she didn't have the confidence to show her work.
One day, her art teacher, Ms Thompson, said there was a coming art show where students could show their artworks. Lucy was excited but afraid at the same time. She was afraid that others will give their opinions about her creation.
Ms Thompson noticed Lucy's worry and decided to help her deal with her fear. She came up with a special idea and told it to Lucy. Lucy liked this idea and started working on her painting.
The day of the art show arrived. When the students saw Lucy's painting, they just saw a piece of blank(空白的) paper. This made them surprised, and they asked Lucy about her painting. Lucy brushed some water on it and the beautiful painting appeared. There was a beautiful sun over the sea. They could also see some white clouds and a small ship.

It's normal to see ten beautiful women taking part in a beauty pageant(选美比赛). Some smile naturally and some play to the camera. Their beauty forever freezes(定格) at this moment. Like many other pageants around the world, these women are young, thin and match many standards of traditional “beauty”.
But none of these women are real—everything about them, even the expressions on their faces, is created by AI. This is the world's first ever AI beauty pageant. Each woman has a famous AI company behind them, such as OpenAI and Stable Diffusion.
Each of the competitors has an unusual face and personality, which makes them different from others. One red-haired, green-eyed avatar(用户头像) named Seren Ay posts photos on the Internet as she travels around the world, appearing on Miami beaches and streets of Tokyo, and she has received many “likes” from millions of fans. But unlike real humans, these avatars never look old. They don't need to be paid and can be directly owned by a company for the purpose of making money.
The pageant organisers say the competitors will be judged by more than just beauty. They will also get points for their creators' use of AI tools, and also their social media influence. They even have to answer questions like “If you could have one dream to make the world a better place, what would it be?”
Fawcett, one of the organisers, says they are looking for someone powerful and positive(积极乐观的). They are not just judging beauty, but also the technology behind each avatar... And most importantly, the backstory behind them. “This shows the directions of future AI technology,” Fawcett adds.

We know that AI is not a real human. However, it seems many of us can't help treating it like one. In a survey of 2,000 people in the USA, 48 percent believed we should have good manners when talking to AI, said The New York Post.
Scientists at the Imperial College London in the UK have made a similar discovery recently. They found that humans tend(往往会) to treat AI as human beings showing sympathy(同情) towards them and even protecting them, Science Daily reported.
In their experiment, the scientists invited 244 volunteers to play an online ball game with an AI bot. A make-believe volunteer also took part, and sometimes left out the AI on purpose by passing the ball only to human players. As the scientists watched the game, they discovered that most of the time the volunteers tried to fix the unfairness(不公平) towards the bot by giving it the ball more often.
The finding is in line with the ideas of Media Equation Theory, the scientists said in their papers. Developed in the 1990s by scientists at Stanford University in the USA, the theory suggests we often reply to media and technology like we do to real people and places, rather than just seeing them as tools.
An example is Replika, an AI chatbot created in 2017. It has about 2 million users worldwide. “Your Replika will always be your side no matter what you are up to,” reads its official website. But the AI's support turned dangerous when it encouraged Jaswant Singh Chail, a young man in the UK, to carry out his plan to kill the Queen. Chail tried to do so in December 2021, but he was stopped in time. However, he was still put in prison.
Companies should avoid making AI too human-like in their design, advised the scientists at Imperial College London. This can help people tell the difference between virtual(虚拟的) and real communication.
( )4.What can we learn about Media Equation Theory?
A.Humans always treat AI as tools.
B.Humans often reply to AI as to real people.
C.Humans should make AI less human-like.
D.Humans tried to fix unfairness in the game.
( )5.What does the author want to tell us by mentioning “Replika” in the text?
A.AI has educational advantages. B.AI can influence humans in some ways.
C.AI is designed for some purposes. D.AI can't be used in social communication.
( )6.What can be inferred from the text?
A.AI always has bad influence on humans.
B.Nearly half people in the USA treat AI politely.
C.Treating AI more carefully is a must for humans.
D.Companies won't make AI as friends any more.
( )7.The following sentence can best be put at the end of .
While this could make humans and AI work better as a team, it also has risks, especially when AI bots are designed to act like “friends” to people.

Lightning(闪电) strikes kill millions of trees each year—but it turns out that some large tropical(热带的) trees can not only stay alive after they're hit by a strike, but also benefit from its effects, according to a recent study.
Some trees are getting repeatedly hit by lightning over their lifetime. But why can they survive(活下来)? Researchers don't know for sure. However, they think that trees will be heated less if they're more conductive. That means the energy from lightning is just moving to their neighbours, instead of staying in them. The lightning's strong power kills the parasitic vines(寄生藤蔓) on the trees. It also kills some other trees nearby, reducing competition.
Dipteryx oleifera, a tree in Panama's forests, has probably experienced 10 lightning strikes so far. It stays safe and sound, while most of the neighbouring trees were killed. If you are in the forest, you'll recognise it by its huge size and height. “We believe the trees in Panama's forests have five strikes on average. But, you know, some of them obviously have a ton of strikes,” Evan Gora, a forest ecologist said.
How long do these trees live in the forests? People can't do tree ring dating in tropical forests because the trees don't make continuous growth rings. Researchers guess many of the trees would be hundreds, or maybe even more than 1,000 years old.
What can we learn from the study? The hardest things can turn into good things, can they?
( )8.Why can some large tropical trees survive lightning strikes?
A.Because they're not often hit by lightning.
B.Because the neighbouring trees protect them.
C.Because the lightning energy moves away from them.
D.Because their special bark protects them.
( )9.What may happen after the large trees are hit by lightning?
A.They win better living conditions.
B.They have more neighbours around.
C.They can stand more kinds of danger.
D.They gain extra nutrients(营养物) from lightning.
( )10.What does the tree Dipteryx oleifera look like?
A.Old and weak. B.Huge and tall.
C.Clean and thin. D.Dark and rough.
( )11.Why can't people tell the exact age of the large trees hit by lightning?
A.Because the weather there is terrible.
B.Because people don't have proper tools.
C.Because continuous growth rings can't be found.
D.Because their roots(根) are damaged(损坏) by lightning.

You can think like a scientist
How can you find answers to your questions about the world around you? You can think like a scientist. Say you have seen crickets(蟋蟀) in the yard.
Observe(观察). It seems like crickets chirp(唧唧叫) very fast on some nights. But on other nights, it's like they are taking it easy. Their chirping is slow and relaxed. You start to notice this difference.
Ask a question. You wonder, does the speed of cricket chirping change with temperature? Maybe the heat or cold outside has something to do with how fast or slow they chirp.
Form an idea. You remember that on hot summer nights, the crickets seem to be more active. So, you think crickets chirp faster when it's warmer.
Have a try. You will need a timer, and a tool which is used to show temperature. You will count how many times a cricket chirps in 2 minutes. You will do this when the air temperature is warmer and when the air temperature is cooler.
Find out the result. After doing this several times, you look at your notes. You find that you counted more chirps in warmer air temperatures. This result supports your idea. Crickets chirp faster when it is warmer.
Thinking like a scientist includes sharing what you learn. You can tell others about what you did in words or drawings. Tell others to try it themselves. You can expect them to get the same results.
( )1.What should you do first when studying crickets?
A.Give the result. B.Watch carefully. C.Show your idea. D.Raise a question.
( )2.What tools can help test the idea about cricket chirping and temperature?
A. B. C. D.
( )3.Why is it important to share what you learn?
A.Because it can change the result of your test.
B.Because it makes your idea more interesting.
C.Because it helps you to remember what you did well.
D.Because it encourages others to try and check the results.

①Climate change is happening. It is having a strong effect(影响) on areas of the world.
②Other than causing terrible storms in some places or periods of no rain for months at a time in other places, climate change has influenced the temperature of the sea near land. When the temperature of the sea changes, this influences sea animals. People who make their living in some way from the sea will have a hard time as the sea animals begin to die off. On top of this, higher temperatures are causing ice mountains to melt, which is causing sea levels around the world to rise.
③Rising sea levels are a big problem. As areas of land beside the sea go under the water, the animals that used to live in these areas are forced to find new homes. Freshwater lakes located(位于) near the seas also become filled with salt water. In addition to these lakes, certain lands that are normally wet but still above sea level become flooded. These lands are necessary for the environment because they can help take out some kinds of poisons(毒物) from water. They can also slow down or stop flooding of dry land above them. Because of the rising sea levels, some places that did not experience floods before, like farms far from the sea, now get flooded.
④Rising sea levels also have a big effect on how people live. For example, when the sea level rises and the salt water moves higher up on the land, it can go into the ground and get into areas where people get the fresh water they drink. Water from the sea is bad for cars, trucks, and boats. Bridges and roads can also be hurt by water from the sea. The walls people build to keep water out of cities and towns are in trouble, too.
( )8.How does the rising temperature influence sea animals?
A.It makes them disappear.
B.It makes them change their colours.
C.It makes them change their shapes.
D.It makes them find their new homes.
( )9.What can help keep the water clean according to the text?
A.Salt. B.Wet lands. C.Sea animals. D.Farms far from the sea.
( )10.What does the underlined word “it” refer to in Paragraph 4?
A.The rain. B.The sea level. C.The salt water. D.The fresh water.

*How about a rhino(犀牛)? There are five different kinds.
There are lots of other kinds of animals, too—some live in the water, some live in forests or deserts and others spend most of their lives in the air!
Of course, you can't take the animal home with you. The animals are happy at the zoo, and the zookeepers look after them very well. But you can get a magazine with lots of photos and news every month, and emails from the zoo with news about your animal. The best thing is that you can go to the zoo to visit your animal as often as you want—for free!

Tea has long been a popular drink in China. Chinese people love different kinds of tea. Among them, black tea and white tea from Fujian, green tea from Zhejiang and Anhui, and dark tea from Yunnan are some of the favourites.
In the Song Dynasty, tea culture reached new heights. The beauty of the Song tea came alive through dian cha. Powdered(制成粉状的) tea was whisked(搅打) with water into soft “clouds”. White tea was often used to make the “clouds” as white as the moonlight. Tea artists used clean water to draw pictures on them with a teaspoon. The way of serving dian cha became a living art. It later influenced Japanese tea culture. Today, more young people are learning and passing it on.
Yunnan's dark tea, especially Pu'er, got famous because of the Ancient Tea Horse Road. And it won popularity around the world. In 1976, Frenchman Fred Kempler found a new kind of Pu'er from Yunnan in a shop. In the same year, he visited Yunnan, bought nearly two tons, and began to sell “Yunnan Tuocha” in Europe. Since 1986, Yunnan's Pu'er tuocha has got many prizes at food expos(博览会) in France, America and other countries. Today you can see an old Australian lady holding a cup of tea of sun-dried Pu'er, though she still enjoys her English-style black tea with milk and sugar. Tea is a bridge of friendship among nations and peoples.
Tea is enjoyed timelessly from ancient to modern times. Each cup of dian cha, white as the moonlight, turned tea into art, and art into eternity(永恒). Tea is also loved globally from the east to the west. Each cup of Pu'er, with the smell of sunshine, turns tea into friendship, and friendship into a shared future.

Every year, lots of animals around the world go on migrating(迁徙) journeys. Some need to find food; others are looking for somewhere to produce and raise their young. Migrations can be long and difficult for animals, but new research on birds has found that farmland along the way can help their progress.
In spring, hundreds of thousands of birds living near Lake Poyang, in China, fly north to Siberia, Russia. On the way, they find places to stop and eat to keep their energy levels up for the long journey. Some birds, such as geese, eat young grass that starts to grow at the beginning of the season. This food can last for only a few weeks. And rising temperatures caused by climate change can sometimes make the grass grow earlier than usual. This means that some birds are arriving too late to eat the grass. As more land is used for farming, the natural wetlands where birds like to search for food are disappearing, too.
A team of researchers have recently chosen to follow 246 birds, including geese and tundra swans, that are flying from Lake Poyang to Siberia. They find that the birds have changed their diets to adapt (适应)to the environments they pass through. As well as eating grass from the wetlands along the way, the birds are also eating seeds(种子) dropped by farmers.
The researchers believe that seeds will become a more important part of migrating birds' diets as more natural wetlands disappear. They suggest that if farmers use different ways of harvesting, such as using machines that leave behind more seeds in fields, it could help to feed migrating birds. However, they also say wetlands must be protected, so the birds can enjoy different food during their long journeys.

A.Raising their babies. B.Enjoying the journey.
C.Sending food to others. D.Taking care of the old.
( )9.What problem might the birds meet when flying from Lake Poyang to Siberia?
A.There is no grass growing along the way.
B.There is a sudden drop in temperature on the way.
C.Fewer natural wetlands are left for them to find food.

( )10.How do the birds adapt to the environments they pass through?
A.By changing their diets.
B.By changing the way they fly.
C.By making their homes in wetlands.
D.By making friends with farmers.

If you are a bike rider, you may remember your first long ride. On a bike, you could travel much faster and farther than you ever could on foot. What freedom! The first humans to ride horses probably felt the same way.
Ten thousand years ago, wild horses lived across the grasslands of Europe, Asia, and the Americas. At first, humans hunted them for meat. But around 6,000 years ago, people in Central Asia discovered something important: Horses could dig through snow to find grass during cold winters, and they could also eat tough plants that other animals couldn't. This meant horses were easy to raise. So people began to keep horses for food. For the first time, humans and horses lived together.
Later, people learnt that horses lived in groups and they followed their lead horses. By copying their actions and acting like their leaders, humans slowly won their trust. Over time, horses grew calm around humans, allowing people to milk and ride them. But early rides were difficult—imagine trying to stay on a horse without a saddle(马鞍)! The animal would jump and throw riders off from time to time. To solve this problem, people invented tools, like saddles and reins, to control horses.
People then used horses for farming, trading, and exploring new lands, which made them more popular as working animals. Because of their speed and strength, horses also became powerful partners of soldiers in wars. More interestingly, horses even influenced fashion—people invented trousers to make riding more comfortable!
Today, horses have been important friends to humans on farms and in cities, even after trains replaced them as the fastest transportation in the 1800s. From food to friends, horses have walked with humans through time. They're living pages of our shared story.

①Human actions are affecting the environment. We will lose more of the natural world if we don't try to change things.Though it is difficult, we can make a difference. Each small change is important, and luckily more individuals(个人) and organisations are working on conservation(保护) projects.
②Samson, an African fisherman, has become a voice for the ocean. He and the other fishermen realised they were catching fewer and fewer fish. They were overfishing.Working with the World Wide Fund for Nature(WWF), Samson learned they had to fish more carefully. He realised they shouldn't catch so many young fish because if there are too few of them, there won't be enough adult fish to reproduce. He believes protecting the ocean is everybody's job.He says,“Take your responsibilities and never think that you are alone.”
③In Florida, the Sea Turtle Conservancy(STC)noticed there were always plenty of single-use plastic items, like bottles and drinking straws(吸管), on the beaches. These items can hurt the ocean wildlife terribly. Straws are especially dangerous for turtles because they can get stuck in turtles' noses and hurt them badly. So, the STC started the project “Where are the straws?”, asking local restaurants to stop giving customers straws with their drinks. Now, restaurants will only give straws if customers ask for them, and they only give out paper straws.
④Those are just two examples of the many conservation efforts around the world today. They both show us that change is possible and that it can start with small actions. We are part of the problem. It's time to be part of the solution.

“The Five-Starred Red Flag flies high...”Whenever we hear the song, we will sing along. The song is called Ode to the Motherland(《歌唱祖国》).It was written by Wang Xin.
On 1st October 1949, Wang Xin attended the Founding Ceremony(开国大典) of the People's Republic of China. He was deeply moved and decided to write a song at once for New China with his love and pride. He had many ideas but none was good enough to him.
One day in September 1950, on the way to Beijing Railway Station, Wang Xin walked past Tian'anmen Square. The moment he saw the Five-Starred Red Flag flying in the wind, a few words for the song came into his mind.On the train back to Tianjin, when he saw the fields and mountains outside the window, the main part of the song began to take shape, “Over the mountains, across the plains(平原)...” When Wang Xin arrived home, he said with excitement, “I made it!I made it!” He completed the whole song right away. The next morning, he went to a local newspaper, hoping to get the song published. But it wasn't accepted.

I've had a long argument with a girl named Summer ever since we met in kindergarten. It all started with a small cubby(小柜子). Six-year-old Summer asked me to take my backpack out of “her” cubby.
“You don't own this cubby,” six-year-old me replied. “Why don't you just use a different cubby?”
“I've been using this cubby all week,” said Summer. “You're the one who needs to use a different cubby!”
“Well,” I said. “I don't think you're being very friendly.”
“Well,” said Summer. “Maybe that's because you're not my friend!”
In the first grade, during a ball game, we argued again. Summer said I was out of the game because the ball bounced twice, but I knew it only bounced once by the rule. She said I was a sore loser, and I said the same about her.
In the third grade, we had another disagreement when we were in the chess club. I questioned her move(走棋), and she got angry, saying the wrong move was that she agreed to play with me.
As you can see, ▲ . But something surprising changed us. We both acted as rabbits in our school's winter play. At first, we tried to pay no attention to each other. But our director Mr Jackson, knew we had problems with each other and wanted to help. So he asked us to team up and sing a song together. We were nervous but agreed.
During rehearsals, we practised over and over again in order to give a wonderful performance on stage and we started talking with each other before the big show. We knew our memories of past arguments were completely different. We ended up laughing about those silly fights. After lots of practice, our performance was a great success, and the audience couldn't stop laughing. I learn that not everyone gets along well at first, but sometimes, a conversation can turn enemies into friends.

( D )7.What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A.To introduce different kinds of stars.

D.Proper naps help students focus in afternoon classes.
( D )10.What can be the best title for the text?
A.Family Roles in Education B.New Ways of Supporting Learning
C.Importance of Sleep for Students D.Comfortable Naps Provided bySchools
( C )11.What is the text?
