Grandma called me in from the yard. “Would you please go to the store for me, Emma? I’m ready to make cakes, but there aren’t enough eggs. Take 20 dollars from my wallet.” I found Grandma’s wallet and put the money in my pocket.
I arrived at the store soon. “Mr. Jenkins,” I said, “Grandma needs some eggs.” Mr. Jenkins set the eggs on the counter. He smiled at me. “And what else do you need?” I knew what he meant. I was always allowed to pick a piece of candy when I came to the store with Grandma. “How much change do I have from 20 dollars?” I asked. “Seven dollars.” Mr. Jenkins replied. I thought about that quickly. I was sure Grandma wouldn’t care if I spent two dollars. The longer I looked at the candy display, the more certain I became that I needed two dollars’ worth as a reward for coming to the store alone. And I did so.
“Thank you, Emma,” Grandma said when I laid the eggs on the table. “Did you put the change back in my wallet?” “Yes, Grandma.” I replied, hurrying out to the yard. “I hadn’t really lied to Grandma,” I argued with myself. “I did put back all the change I had.”
But I had spent two dollars without Grandma’s permission. The second piece of candy in my pocket didn’t sound like a good idea any more. I knew I had lied to Grandma, and I was unhappy about it. Grandma is so kind that I couldn’t bear to keep anything from her.
When Grandma took the hot cakes from the oven, I told her about the candy. She nodded when I finished my story. “I know just how you feel,” she said. “I’m glad you told me about the dollars. You are an honest kid and of course I’ll forgive you.” Suddenly I felt relaxed as though a big stone was gone from my stomach.

34. What can we infer from the passage?

Many animals move from one place to another once a year. This movement is called migration (迁徙). They migrate to find food, a partner, or warmer weather. One of the most wonderful migrations in nature is that of the North American monarch butterfly (帝王蝶).
Every autumn, millions of these beautiful butterflies begin a long and difficult journey. They try to travel around 4,000 kilometers south and find their way to California or Mexico. However, until recently no one knew how they did this.
A team of scientists led by Professor Eli Shlizerman at the University of Washington has now found the answer. They have found out that the monarch is able to tell the time of day. It uses its eyes to tell the position of the sun. These two pieces of information allow it to decide the way to go. Finally, it succeeds in reaching the places where it will spend the winter.
The monarch population has dropped by 90 percent in the last few years. Sadly, human activity is the main reason. In many of the places where the butterfly can be found, people’s activities are harmful to the natural environment. They cut down trees and use chemicals to kill the plants so that monarch caterpillars (幼虫) may get hurt.
The research on the monarch has led more people to pay attention to it. People have been working together to record its migration and make sure that there will be enough plants for it. If this works, there may come a time when the number of butterflies rises once again. The more we know about it, the more actions we can take in the natural world for a better environment.

第三节 信息摘录(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,完成以下表格,每空不超过三个单词。
The number of mobile phone users has increased greatly throughout the world. The number of waste mobile phones is also very shocking.
When people throw their mobile phones away, they usually end up in the open air. Mobile phones include some materials like lead, mercury, and cadmium (铅,汞和镉). They can go into drinking water and food and cause health problems to people and animals.
Actually, about 75 percent of mobile phone users don’t throw their phones away. Instead, they keep the waste ones sitting around the house as they are not worth very much. People are also afraid that others may know their information if they sell their waste phones. Less than 20 percent of them are recycled each year.
Mobile phones have valuable materials inside. The most valuable material is gold. They can be used again after recycling. If all of the waste phones in the US are recycled, it will save enough energy to offer over 194,000 US families electricity for one year.
One way of recycling mobile phones is to take the working parts of broken phones, then combine (使结合) them with the working parts of other used mobile phones to make one ready-to-use mobile phone. Another way of mobile phone recycling is to melt (熔化) down and separate parts of the phone, getting the valuable materials, such as gold and platinum. Plastic and glass can also be recycled from used mobile phones.
