We all know that indigenous tribes (部落) in rainforests support relatively few people, but they manage rainforests’ sustainably. These communities serve as guardians of an ancient wisdom and heritage passed down through generations. They possess a thorough, traditional knowledge of the forest ecosystem, using resources without exhausting them. By contrast, the wealthy landowners, large companies and illegal loggers, in their pursuit of financial gain, have done huge damage. Their deforestation and burning of tropical rainforests are already having severe effects on global climate, biodiversity, human health, and local and regional socioeconomics.
Faced with these accelerating impacts, we urgently need sustainable management of rainforest resources. A multi-faceted approach combining conservation, sustainable use, and international cooperation is essential for rainforest protection.
Selective logging and replanting — introduced in Malaysia (Figure 1) — avoids the completely destructive clear felling (砍伐) .
Ecotourism, such as in Costa Rica and Malaysia, introduces people to the natural world and provides long-term income to local people and governments.
Conservation and education encourages preservation of rainforests in national parks and nature reserves for scientific research (e.g. the Caura Basin, Venezuela) .
International agreements recognize the global importance of rainforests in combating climate change. They include “debt-for-nature-swapping” agreements under which some donor countries and organisations reduce their debt repayment demands in return for calling a stop to destructive logging.
The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) promotes sustainably managed forestry through education programmes and its FSC-labelled products.
1. What has caused serious damage to rainforests?
A. Profit-driven activities. B. Traditional farming practices.
C. The decline of local economy. D. Deforestation by indigenous tribes.
2. According to Figure 1, how long does forest regeneration take before the next cycle?
A. 3-6 months. B. 10-15 years. C. 30-40 years. D. 60-70 years.
3. Which practice reflects global collaboration in rainforest management?
A. Selective logging. B. Debt-for-nature swaps.
C. Developing ecotourism. D. Establishing natural parks.

When I was little, my dad would let me sit beside him on the porch while he painted. He would tell me how the cow by itself is just a cow, and the meadow by itself is just grass and flowers, and the sun peeking through the trees is just a beam of light, but put them all together and you’ve got magic.
I understood what he was saying, but I’ve never felt what he was saying until one day when I was up in the sycamore tree to rescue a kite stuck in the branches. It was a long way up, but I thought I’d give it a shot. I started climbing. Then I looked down. And suddenly I got dizzy and weak. I was miles off the ground! But the kite was still beyond my reach. I caught my breath and forced myself to concentrate on the kite as I climbed up.
When I had the kite free, I needed a minute to rest. That’s when the fear of being up so high began to lift, and in its place came the most amazing feeling that I was flying. Just soaring above the earth, sailing among the clouds.
Then I began to notice how wonderful the breeze smelled. It seemed like sunshine and wild grass and rain! I couldn’t stop breathing it in, filling my lungs again and again with the sweetest smell I’d ever known.
I never got over the view. I kept thinking of what it felt like to be up so high in that tree. I wanted to see it, to feel it, again. And again.
It wasn’t long before I wasn’t afraid of being up so high and found the spot that became my spot. I could sit there for hours, just looking out at the world. Sunsets were amazing. Some days they’d be purple and pink, some days they’d be a blazing orange, setting fire to clouds across the horizon.
It was on a day like that when my father’s notion (观念) moved from my head to my heart. The view from my sycamore was more than rooftops and clouds and wind and colors combined.
And I started marveling (惊奇) at how I was feeling both humble and majestic. How was that possible? How could I be so full of peace and full of wonder?
It was magic.

China is advancing its national plan for agricultural and rural modernization, aiming for significant progress in the upcoming 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30). This strategy is crucial for meeting rising food demands and dealing with global challenges. The core goals are to transform agriculture through modern technology, large-scale farming, and sustainable practices, while also improving living conditions in rural areas to close the gap with cities.
Self-sufficiency in food and technology is a top priority. The government stresses that strengthening agricultural science and technology is key to achieving this. Efforts will focus on developing high-quality, green agriculture by using science to turn traditional farming into a modern industry. Protecting farmland and driving innovation in areas like seed technology are considered essential for ensuring a stable and secure food supply for the nation.
To accelerate innovation, China is promoting closer cooperation between research institutes and businesses. A new national institute for future agricultural products processing has been established to bring scientists and companies together. The goal is to speed up the process of turning scientific discoveries into market-ready products. By applying advanced technologies, China aims to make its agricultural sector more intelligent, green, and competitive, boosting its overall value.
However, China’s agriculture faces resource and environmental pressures, such as water shortages. The sector is shifting from a model driven by resource expansion to one powered by science and innovation. Although water use efficiency has improved, it still lags behind developed countries. To tackle this, the country is investing in smart irrigation technology and building high-standard farmland. This type of farmland is designed to resist droughts and floods, guaranteeing stable and high yields.
To support these efforts, the government is taking firm legal action. It is enforcing a “red line” to guarantee that the total amount of farmland does not fall below 120 million hectares. Furthermore, a new draft law on farmland protection has been introduced to address problems like the illegal use of farmland for non-agricultural purposes and declining soil quality. This shows a strong commitment to improving farmland and securing the country’s agricultural future.
8. What is the main purpose of China’s agricultural modernization plan?
A. To increase the export of agricultural products.
B. To ensure food security and sustainable development.
C. To encourage more people to move to rural areas.
D. To compete with developed countries in technology.
9. What can be inferred about the new institute mentioned in paragraph 3?
A. It will focus only on basic theoretical research.
B. It aims to separate scientific work from business needs.
C. It is expected to help turn new ideas into practical products faster.
D. Its main task is to train more scientists for the government.
10. Why is high-standard farmland being built according to the passage?
A. To increase the total size of farming land in China.
B. To reduce the need for water in agricultural production.
C. To make the farmland more resistant to natural disasters.
D. To replace the traditional farming methods completely.
11. What does the introduction of the new draft law suggest?
A. The existing laws were not effective enough.
B. Farmers have been using land in the wrong way.
C. The government plans to reduce the amount of farmland.
D. China’s agricultural development has been very successful.
B 9. C 10. C 11. A

In the early hours of March 13,1964,Kitty Genovese was attacked violently near her New York apartment despite neighbors hearing her screams. The case made headlines in The New York Times, which reported that 38 witnesses heard the attack but took no action.
To figure out the reason, social psychologists John Darley and Bibb Latané conducted two classic experiments. Their first experiment showed that the more bystanders there were, the more an individual’s sense of responsibility diffused — 85% of participants helped in a one-on-one situation, while only 31%did so in a group of six. In their second smoke experiment, 75% of people alone sought help when smoke filled the room, but just 10% did so with passive bystanders around.
They pointed out that the bystander effect mainly springs from people’s failure to interpret a situation as an emergency due to others’ inaction. The second reason for the bystander effect is that when multiple bystanders are present, each person feels less personal commitment to act, as they assume others (especially those with professional skills like doctors or police) will intervene. This phenomenon is more common in urban areas with many strangers, unlike in small communities where people feel a clear sense of responsibility to help others they know.
Recent research has cast doubt on the universality of Darley and Latané’s classic bystander effect theory. Using real-world CCTV footage from three pairs of culturally diverse cities — Lancaster, Amsterdam, and Cape Town — Dr, Richard Philpot of Lancaster University and his team analyzed 212 violent incidents.
Their findings showed that bystanders intervened in 91% of cases, and in direct contradiction to the original theory, the presence of more bystanders actually increased the likelihood of intervention, with multiple people often stepping in together. The consistent types of intervention across different cities suggest we are born with the wish to help others, driven by social conventions and a desire to understand, protect, and assist others.
12. What does the underlined word “diffused” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Weakened. B. Shifted. C. Continued. D. Increased.
13. The bystander effect occurs primarily because people _________.
A. are unwilling to help strangers
B. are influenced by urbanization
C. are discouraged by professionals
D. are unable to recognize an emergency
14. Which statement does Philpot probably agree with?
A. Protecting others should be advocated.
B. Bystander responses rely on intervention types.
C. The tendency to help is rooted in human nature.
D. Cultural differences lead to the bystander effect.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Cold Shoulder B. The Blind Eye
C. A Willing Heart D. A Still Tongue
A 13. D 14. C 15. B

根据第二段中的“Their first experiment showed that the more bystanders there were, the more an individual’s sense of responsibility diffused — 85% of participants helped in a one-on-one situation, while only 31%did so in a group of six.(他们的第一个实验表明,旁观者越多,个人的责任感就越分散diffused——一对一情境下有85%的参与者会提供帮助,而六人小组中仅有31%的人会这样做。)” 故选A项。
根据第三段中的“They pointed out that the bystander effect mainly springs from people’s failure to interpret a situation as an emergency due to others’ inaction.(他们指出,旁观者效应主要源于人们因他人的不作为而无法将当下情况判定为紧急事件。)”
根据最后一段中的“The consistent types of intervention across different cities suggest we are born with the wish to help others, driven by social conventions and a desire to understand, protect, and assist others.(不同城市中一致的干预行为表明,我们天生就拥有帮助他人的意愿,这受社会习俗以及理解、保护和帮助他人的渴望所驱动。)”
通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“Kitty Genovese was attacked violently near her New York apartment despite neighbors hearing her screams. The case made headlines in The New York Times, which reported that 38 witnesses heard the attack but took no action.(基蒂·吉诺维斯在纽约公寓附近遭到暴力袭击,尽管邻居们听到了她的尖叫。这起案件登上了《纽约时报》头条,报道称有38名目击者听到了袭击却没有采取任何行动。)”以及后文对旁观者效应的阐释,文章核心围绕人们面对紧急事件视而不见、不予干预的现象展开,因此“The Blind Eye(视而不见)”最适合作为文章标题。故选B项。

Gardening season is in full bloom, but keeping track of which seedling (幼苗) is which can be really tricky. Enter DIY oven-bake clay garden markers — these little lifesavers aren’t just practical; they also add a special charm to your greenery.
To kick off your garden marker project, you’ll need to get hands-on with some oven-bake clay. Start by kneading (揉捏) a piece of clay in your hands for a few minutes — think of it as a mini workout for your fingers. ____16____ Then, place it on the baking sheet and roll it out evenly to about 1/4 inch thick.
____17____ You might go for a classic straight marker with a pointed end to stick directly into the soil, or perhaps you’re feeling a bit more adventurous and want to create a round or heart shape with a hole to hang from a metal post.
Then give your garden markers some personality! Grab your favorite rubber stamps and press them firmly into the clay to make an impression. You can stamp the names of your plants, like “basil” or “tomatoes”, to keep things organized. ____18____
Now that your garden markers are looking great, it’s time to set them in stone. Follow the instructions on the clay package for baking. Generally, bake the markers at a low temperature (around 275°F) for about 15 minutes per 1/4 inch of thickness. ____19____ Then, they’ll be ready to give your garden a stylish look!
Finally, decide on the finishing touches. ____20____ If you’re feeling fancy, a coat of paint can be applied for a long-lasting finish and shine. Whether you’re channeling your inner Picasso with bright colors or leaving them in their natural state to provide an earthy feel, which is equally charming, the choice is all yours.
A. Remember to keep an eye on it.
B. Allow them to cool completely afterward.
C. Add some fun and creativity to your garden.
D. This softens the clay and makes it more workable.

结合前文“Spring is in full bloom”所营造的当下氛围,可知此处描述的是现阶段正在发生的动作,要用现在进行时,此句主语“a new urban walking trend”为单数,be动词用is,gain的现在分词为gaining。
“with +名词+ of...” 的”,with the sole aim of意思是“唯一的目的是……”,在句中作状语。
此处用动词不定式作后置定语,修饰名词“opportunity”,“an opportunity to do sth.”
“embrace the life”和“grow together with the city”这两个动作是并列关系,所以用连词and连接,使句子逻辑连贯。

The activity will be held in the school auditorium. First, a lecture will introduce its origin, legends and cultural connotations. Then, foreigners will learn to make traditional mooncakes with our students’ help.

King Louis is a regal (似帝王的) cat, hence the name. We adopted Louis two years ago after he wandered into our house through the doggy door. We had a twelve-year-old dog named Sammy. He didn’t appreciate it when Louis lay on his bed and said so. But King Louis was unimpressed with Sammy’s protests and gave him a dismissive look. And that was that.
Upon adopting our family, Louis made it clear that his principal bed fellow and confidant (知己) was to be Ayla, our daughter. They became inseparable. Besides sleeping with Ayla, Louis sat on her lap when she was eating dinner, watching TV, or doing her homework. He even insisted on riding in the car when she was being dropped off at school.
But then something happened.
As graduation from high school approached, congratulatory cards from friends and family poured in for Ayla, most of which contained money, primarily in twenty-dollar bills. Since Louis has a bad habit of eating things not intended for that purpose, he viewed the money as a treat meant for him. And he ate the twenty-dollar bills that Ayla left in a basket on the floor of her bedroom. About $200 worth.
For his part, King Louis didn’t recognize the severity of what he had done and expected things to continue the way they had always been. But Ayla, who was so mad at Louis, did not share this view. From that decisive moment on, King Louis was banned from Ayla’s bedroom, her lap, and the car rides to school. King Louis couldn’t understand and sorrowful meows filled our home.
And then, after three days, something strange happened. King Louis was playing in the backyard as usual but didn’t come back inside around noon. I became concerned and went searching for him. Nothing. Nowhere. Then my phone rang. It was Principal Leonard in Ayla’s school. He said there was a little situation in the school. I was there in minutes, and followed the principal to his office.
Paragraph 1: I was astonished and relieved by what I saw.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: When we returned home, Ayla apologized to Louis for ignoring him.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
I was astonished and relieved by what I saw. There was my daughter, sitting on a couch, with King Louis curled in her lap, purring like a jet engine. With great excitement and pride, Ayla told me how Louis waltzed into the cafeteria like he owned the place, jumped on a table, and strode from one table to the next until he found her. Poor Louis. He must have been very upset because Ayla hadn’t been paying any attention to him, so he did the only thing he could think of: He came looking for her. And he must have known where Ayla was from all the times he rode along when I dropped her off at school.
Paragraph 2:
When we returned home, Ayla apologized to Louis for ignoring him. “I guess even kings make mistakes,” Ayla said with a laugh, and Louis purred in approval, his regal dignity restored. True to his nature, Louis wasted no time reclaiming his throne—Ayla’s lap—during dinner, and by bedtime, he was curled beside her as if the Great Twenty-Dollar Bill Incident had never happened. And, to Ayla’s great surprise, our family and friends were so moved by the story of King Louis that they re-contributed to Ayla’s graduation. But, this time, it was different. No twenties this time. Only hard plastic, King Louis-proof gift cards.

4. Why did the author climb up the sycamore tree?
A. To play in the tree. B. To get a trapped kite.

5. The author’s climbing experience was .

C. adventurous but rewarding D. well-planned and interesting
6. Why did the author like being up high in the tree?

D. Because she could enjoy more than good views.
